Carl and Audrey VanDusen Sherman

NORTH KORTRIGHT — Committal services for Carl and Audrey (VanDusen) Sherman will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2004, in the North Kortright Cemetery.

Carl Sherman, 66, died May, 14, 2000, in Barneveld. His wife, Audrey Jo Sherman, also 66, died there on Feb. 25, 2004.

Emma Ridgeway

MIDDLEFIELD — A memorial service for Emma Ridgeway, who died June 5, 2004, a Middlefield resident, will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2004, at the Middlefield United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends following the service.

Garland Gladstone

NORWICH — Garland K. Gladstone, 76, of Norwich, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Wilson Hospital in Johnson City.

Born Oct. 2, 1927, in Walton, he was the son of Kenneth and Mabel (Edwards) Gladstone.

He was a graduate of Downsville Central School. Following his schooling, he served with the United States Army during World War II and later with the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge from active service, Garland worked for the People's National Bank in Margaretville until it merged with the National Bank and Trust Company of Norwich in 1965. He remained with NBT until his retirement as an assistant vice president in 1985 after 35 years of service.

Garland volunteered at the Our Daily Bread Food Pantry and enjoyed gardening, woodworking, oil painting and traveling. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and had served as the church's treasurer. He was also a life member of the American Legion Post 189.

On Nov. 11, 1948, in St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Downsville, Garland married the former Barbara Bramley of Norwich, who survives.

He is also survived by four children, Sandra Gladstone of Valhalla, Nancy Gladstone and her companion, Mitch DeSilva, of Albany, Michael Gladstone and his wife, Patricia, of Norwich and William Gladstone and his financee, Martha Pojasek, of Bangor, Maine; eight grandchildren, Adam, Kelly, Matthew, Dylan, Sarah and Lindsay Gladstone as well as Meghan and Harrison Pojasek; a brother, Alan Gladstone and his wife, Clara Mae, of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Garland will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 21, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Friends are invited to call at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will take place in Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Contributions in Garland's memory may be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church or to the Our Daily Bread Food Pantry.

The arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Funeral Home.

Sister Mary Rosina Pondolfino

BAINBRIDGE — Sister Mary Rosina Pondolfino, 82, of Bainbridge, passed away Friday, June 18, 2004, at her home.

She was born Lena Carmella on July 27, 1921, to the late Anthony and Rosario (Zagami) Pondolfino, in Oneonta.

She graduated from Oneonta High School in 1939 and entered the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Albany. Sister attended the College of St. Rose and received her master's degree in music. Sister Rosina spent the next few years teaching in the Albany area.

In the 1950s she moved to Sidney as Superior of the Convent. When it closed, she became the Outreach Coordinator for Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, a position she held until her retirement in 1996.

Sister Rosina was regarded as Mother by Susan Caracciolo-Pondolfino of Bainbridge and is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Samuel and Mary Pondolfino, of Santa Rosa, Calif., several nieces and nephews and her dogs, the little ones, Calum and Brady.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Thomas, Frank and Lou, a sister, Rose, nephew, Paul, and niece, Kate.

Friends may call Monday, June 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Due to construction at her local church, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Evangelist in Bainbridge, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 22. The Rev. Fr. Robert Dwyer, Pastor of St. John's, will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Oneonta, at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Memorial and Honor Program, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105-1942, or Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. Funeral Chapel 21 Main St., Sidney.

Ellen Doris Dorak

BAINBRIDGE — Ellen Doris Dorak, 69, of East Afton Road, Bainbridge, passed away Friday morning June 18, 2004, at the Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City.

She was born Aug. 4, 1934, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Joseph Schuler and Ella Tisdale Schuler.

She was married to William Dorak.

Ellen was a retired employee of the MeadWestvaco Corporation of Sidney. She was a former member of the Women of the Moose Sidney Chapter 502.

She is survived by her husband of 21 years, William Dorak of Bainbridge; four daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Jeffrey Smith of Bainbridge, Pamella and Keith Smith of Bainbridge, Sheila and Carsten Smith of Bainbridge, Tracy and James Taylor of Lewisville, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Jenny Whitenack of Watertown, Allen and JoEllen Dorak of Port Crane; sister, Dorothy Brandenburg, of Pt. Pleasant, N.J. and brother, Roger Schuler, of Lincoln, Neb. Ellen is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her two brothers, Joseph Schuler and Richard Schuler, predeceased Ellen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 21, from St. John's Church, Bainbridge, with the Rev. Fr. Robert D. Dwyer, pastor officiating.

Friends are invited to call from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday at the C. H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main Street, Sidney.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to Hospice of Lourdes Hospital, 169 Riverside Dr., Binghamton.

Allen Edward Lund

BURLINGTON FLATS — Allen Edward Lund, 74, of Burlington Flats died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at home in Burlington Flats.

Allen was born on July 16, 1929, in Burlington Flats, the son of Edward and Matie (Telfer) Lund.

He married Elsie (Chase) Lund on June 27, 1948, in Garrattsville. She survives. He spent his childhood in Burlington Flats, and attended Burlington Flats and Edmeston schools.

He was employed by Willis Rose in his sawmill in his early years, Rogers & Main Co. from 1954-1961 and O.W. Hubbell & Sons as a construction worker until he retired and started his own contracting business. He was also a member of Laborers' International Union of North America No. 35 for 39 years.

Allen is survived by his children and grandchildren, Ken Lund and close friend, Gwen Wellman, Catletsburg, Ky.; Christopher Lund, Angela McCann and Bradley Lund, Robert Lund and wife, Helen, Leonardsville; Melissa Lewis and Jason Lund, Dale Lund and wife, Nancy, Burlington Flats; Randy Lund, Ryan Lund and Kyle Lund, Lorraine (Lund) Rifanburg and husband, Jack, Edmeston; Keith Rifanburg, Denise Richards and Michael Rifanburg, Roger Lund and Jennifer, Horse Shoe, N.C.; Zachary Lund, Kayleigh Lund and Rachael Lund, Velma (Lund) Kingsbury and husband, Thomas, New Berlin; Brett Kingsbury; 16 special great-grandchildren; K-9 companion, Buddy; many friends, including close friends Roger Davis and Renee Rifanburg; sister, Elizabeth Green, Chesapeake, Va.; brother, Raymond Lund, West Edmeston.

He is also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Russell and Lee Chase, Earlville, Glenice Chase, Canastota, Reita Mclean, Sylvan Beach, Chester and Mary Chase, Taberg, Marvin and Linda Chase, Hamilton, Diane Pearl, the state of Maine, Kathryn and Edwin Davis, West Edmeston, William Chase, Sherburne, and Lawrence and Patti Chase, Richfield Springs.

He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Lester Lewis and a sister, Iva Cook; a brother-in-law, Ernest Chase, and father and mother-in-law, Claude and Jessie Chase.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 2004, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with Pastor Donald Buck, of the West Edmeston Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Taylor Hill Cemetery, Burlington Flats. Calling hours will be from noon to 2 p.m., proceeding the funeral service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Edmeston Emergency Squad or the Otsego County Hospice.

George W. Veach

WEST EDMESTON — George William Veach of 10103 Chesebro Road, West Edmeston, died at the Sitrin Nursing Home in New Hartford, on Saturday, June 19, 2004.

He was born on Aug. 3, 1934, in Beacon, the son of George William Veach and Genevieve Briggs. He spent his childhood in Hyde Park, where he graduated from the Roosevelt High School.

On July 11, 1974, he married June Rose Veach.

He is survived by his wife, June; and his mother, Genevieve Briggs Veach Lang, of Florida. He is also survived by two daughters, Tammy DePasquale of California and Debra Veach of Fishkill; two sons, Craig Veach of Chapin, S.C., and Keith Veach of Poughkeepsie; one stepdaughter, Sandra Twang of West Edmeston; three stepsons, Chester Rose of San Francisco, Calif., Gregg Rose of Hadley and Glenn Rose of Millerton; and 16 grandchildren. He has one sister, Sonia Stemple, in Florida; and one brother, Charles Veach, in the state of Washington.

He was predeceased by his father, George William Veach.

He worked for IBM in East Fishkill as a senior staff adviser in the finance department for 33 years.

He was a member of the Elks Club in Poughkeepsie and the V.F.W. in Millerton. He was an avid golfer and bowler and participated in many tournaments. He was well-know for his woodworking and carpentry work and displayed his arts and crafts in the local farmers markets.

The family will celebrate the life of George with a memorial service to be held at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004. The family asks that friends bring pictures of George to display on the memorial board or a memory to share at the service.

They also request that friends donate to the Sitrin Nursing Home, 2050 Childen Ave., New Hartford, NY 13413-1000, or to their favorite charity.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Fanna T. Harris

JEFFERSON — Fanna T. Harris, 87, passed away peacefully at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Philip and Faye Harris, on Friday, June 18, 2004.

Fanna was born the daughter of Edward and Orissa (Gambold) Taylor, in Shiloh Township, Edgar Co., Ill., on Sept. 27, 1916.

When she was 10, her family moved to New York state, eventually settling in Jefferson, where she met George D. Harris. They were married Nov. 29, 1934, a bond that lasted 53 years.

Fanna and George operated a dairy and maple farm in Jefferson, and both served as tax collectors for many years. Later she became a postal clerk at the Jefferson Post Office, retiring after 25 years from that position in 1981.

She was a member of the Jefferson United Methodist Parish. Her greatest loves were her grandchildren, friends and cooking.

She will be remembered by her son, Philip, and his wife, Faye, Harris; four grandchildren, George S., Mount Joy, Pa., Michael P. and fiancee, Karen Chatfield, Jefferson, Charles W., Richmondville and Rachel E., Brasher Falls; a sister-in-law, Madeline Taylor, St. Johnsville; and nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 21, 2004, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, in the Jefferson United Methodist Church, with Pastor Frank Adams officiating. Interment will follow at the Jefferson Evergreen Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Jeremy G. Fletcher

WALTON — Jeremy Gordon Fletcher, 24, of Walton died suddenly June 19, 2004, from injuries sustained in an auto accident.

Jeremy was born Dec. 30, 1979, in Sidney.

He was the proud owner of Fletcher's Construction Corp., a business that he founded himself with hard work and a deep love of building things.

He loved the outdoors, hunting, camping and kayaking, and especially the Fletcher Farm (Bear Farm), where he was always pitching in to help his father, Gordon, with the farming operation.

In high school he was an avid wrestler and football player. This affection for sports continued after graduation from O'Neill High School in Walton, as he coached the junior varsity wrestling team for two years for Walton Central School. Jeremy enjoyed a good book, good friends and good music. He took pleasure in the simple things in life.

Survivors include his parents, Gordon and Karin Fletcher; two sisters, Amanda Fletcher of Southington, Conn., and Heather Smith, her husband, Nathan, and children, Diandra and Kaelan, of Fayetteville, N.C. His grandmother, Janet Fletcher; grandparents, Evelyn and Ralph Palmer; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends also survive.

His grandfather, Richard Fletcher, passed away in 1987.

A funeral service in Jeremy's memory will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church of Walton, 101 North St.

Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church. Please wear casual dress at both times, as Jeremy would have wished it.

James Allen Lum

WEST EDMESTON — James Allen (Red) Lum Sr. died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at his residence in West Edmeston.

He was born Oct. 1, 1928, in the town of Butternuts, the son of Stanley and Rachel (Head) Lum.

He was first married to Margaret Russell in 1951, and then to Donna Spooner in 1960.

Red is survived by his children, Christine Husch and husband, Fred, of Mount Upton, James A. Lum Jr. and wife, Kathy, of New Berlin, Douglas Lum and wife, Tammy, of New Berlin, Terry Lum and wife, Debbie, of Unadilla, Gene Lum and wife, Theresa, of Saratoga, Daniel Lum of West Edmeston; 23 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sisters, Catherine Dugan of Auburn, Frances Keene of Oneida, Janice Simmons of Chittenango and Alice Nichols of South New Berlin; and his brothers, Thomas Lum of Cooksville, Tenn., Theodore Lum and Walter Lum, both of West Edmeston; as well as several nieces and nephews, and special friends, Charles and Ernestine Manner and Rose Yager.

He was predeceased by a son, Robert Lum, in 1992 of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident; a brother, Keith Lum; and a sister, Mary Welch.

Calling hours will be at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, Monday, June 21, 2004, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Donald Buck of the West Edmeston Baptist Church officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

David Jones

DELHI — David Jones, 93, of Delview Terrace, Delhi, died Friday, June 18, 2004, at home.

He was born on June 19, 1910, in Morris Run, Pa., the son of John and Mae (Orton) Jones.

He married Elsie Roe on Oct. 26, 1933, in Elmira.

A 57-year resident of Delhi, David was employed as a field manager for Dellwood Foods, spending some time managing its offices in DeLancey. He was a life member of the Oneonta Elks Club.

He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Elsie B. Jones, of Delhi; and his children, Beverly (Richard) Wess of Rochester and David (Margaret) Jones of Shokan; five grandchildren, Michael Wess and Lori Wess, both of Rochester, Sandra (Jeffrey) Rishel of Hamburg, Jonathon (Adile) Jones of Shokan and Joshua (Erin) Jones of Shokan; four great-grandchildren, Keenan and Madison Jones and Samual and Julia Rishel; a sister, Cathryn (Lester) Geneway of Elmira; three brothers, Charles Jones of Millerton, Pa., Ray (Julia) Jones of Pine City and John (Marilyn) Jones of Elmira; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will take place at the convenience of the family.

Burial will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira.

Contributions in David's memory are asked to be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Carol Sullivan

MEDINA, Ohio — Carol (Enoch) Sullivan, 65, Medina, Ohio, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at The Inn at Medina.

She was born on July 21, 1938, in Syracuse.

She was formerly of the Capital District area.

She was educated at Vincentian Institute. She was employed as a clerical supervisor in the radiology department at Ellis Hospital for 30 years.

Carol is survived by her husband, Edward J. Sullivan, of Oneonta; one daughter, Mary Alice "Sam" (David) Toocheck of Medina; three sons, Michael (Diane) Sullivan of Ballston Spa, Brian (Karen) Sullivan of Jacksonville, Fla., and Daniel Sullivan of Cocoa, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Jessica and Chad Toocheck of Medina, Brittney Sullivan of Cocoa, Zachary, Jayson, and Morgan Sullivan of Ballston Spa, and Lindsey Sullivan of Jacksonville.

Services will be at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday from the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., and at 9 a.m. from St. Luke's Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands.

Contributions may be made to Hospice of Medina County, 797 N. Court St., Medina, OH 44256.

Funeral services are by the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady.

Joseph Mazur

HOBART — Joseph Mazur, 60, of Hobart died June 13, 2004, at home.

He was born Oct. 14, 1943, in Bridegport, Conn., the son of Thaddeus and Mary (Szmist) Mazur.

A veteran of the United States Marines, he served from 1961 until his discharge in 1965. his dedication and love of country was always evident. He was passionate about helping veterans with disabilities to achieve independence and volunteered many hours.

He was employed in operations at the AVCO Corporation in Bridgeport, in aircraft manufacturing.

He is survived by his mother, Mary S. Mazur, Connecticut; a sister, Rita A. Verespy, Rhode Island; his children, Virginia E. Weinmann, Florida, Eric J. Mazur, North Carolina, and Brian J. Mazur, New Hampshire; and his grandchildren, Alexandra Weinmann, Morgan Weinmann, Michael Mazur, Brittany Mazur; and his former wife, Janet V. Mazur, Albany.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at 9 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with Father Michael Cournoyer as celebrant.

There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at a later date.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
