Helen June May

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Helen June Breen May, 88, a resident of Cooperstown, died early Monday morning, May 24, 2004, at the Teresian House Nursing Home in Albany, where she had received care for the past four years.

June was born on June 10, 1915, in Chicago, Ill., a daughter of Frank and Ella (Burke) Breen.

She attended college at Beloit and University of Chicago, transferring to Cornell University in 1936, when her family moved from Chicago to Trenton, N.J. She graduated from Cornell in 1938, with a bachelor of arts degree in English Literature.

For a brief time she taught nursery school until marrying Francis H. May Jr., on Aug. 31, 1940, in a chapel near Lake Wawasee, Ind.

Following World War II, the family settled in Toledo, Ohio, where June devoted herself to raising her children and doing volunteer work. Over the next 30 years, June built lasting friendships in Toledo, Riverside, Conn., and in Englewood, Colo., before she and her husband settled in Cooperstown in 1988.

June will be remembered for her remarkable devotion to her husband, children and grandchildren. A great story-teller, she also loved to garden, was a pretty good shopper (especially at yard sales), and enjoyed traveling.

Whether sailing on Long Island Sound or fishing for trout in the Rockies, June's main enjoyment was being around her family and friends. She had a strong opinion on many topics and was usually willing to share them, often with considerable humor. Despite a long and debilitating illness, she continued to exhibit a combination of wit and determination characteristic of her Irish heritage.

June is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Francis, of Cooperstown; one daughter, Marcia Ann May, and her sons, Eric and Todd of Littleton, Colo.; and two sons, Frank May and his wife, Janet, and their children, James and Katherine, of Stephentown, and John May and his wife, Amanda, and their children, Elizabeth, Caitlin, John, and Abigail, and her husband, Jacob, of Cooperstown. She was especially fond of her eight grandchildren.
