William L. Rosenkranz

MORRIS — William L. Rosenkranz, 77, of Morris, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at M.I. Bassett Hospital. His youngest daughter, Judy, was with him when he passed. His devoted wife, Marie, and daughter, Lois, were with him almost constantly during his hospital stay and several hours before he passed when he called his daughter, Cathy, in Florida to say he'd be home soon.

Bill was born Dec. 27, 1926, in Queens, the son of William Joseph and Anna (Welton) Rosenkranz.

He was drafted into the United States Army a month after his 18th birthday and proudly served in Korea and the Philippines at the end of World War II.

He met his beloved, Marie (Caradonna), while on leave after basic training. They corresponded while he was overseas with the Army and were married on Sept. 14, 1947, at St. Clemens Roman Catholic Church in Ozone Park shortly after his return.

Bill and Marie, who survives him, enjoyed more than 56 years together, beginning their married life in an apartment in Jamaica. They purchased their first home in Uniondale in 1950, relocated to their next home in West Sayville in 1957, and realized his lifelong dream of building their retirement home near the top of Patrick Hill in Morris in 1977.

Bill was an active man for most of his life, participating in golden gloves boxing, minor league baseball and semi-pro bowling in his youth, enjoying hunting and fishing in his middle years and couples league bowling with Marie after retirement. He began raising pigeons for hobby and sport with his father as a child and continued to enjoy them well into his retirement.

He worked for over 29 years for the Long Island Railroad, beginning as a carpenter, advancing to block operator and retiring as a yard master.

After relocating to Morris, he worked another five years for the Delaware & Otsego Railroad in Cooperstown, finally retiring to enjoy a lifelong love of the outdoors and the local area.

In addition to doing substantial work on their home, Bill was known by area pigeon fanciers for the beautiful birds he raised and raced for more than 20 years in this area. He also enjoyed raising his own beef and tending the barn and land at home.

Several health problems in the last five years slowed Bill down a bit, but didn't stop him. He remained a memorable inspiration to family and friends, dealing with the installation of a pace-maker, seven other surgeries, including a below the knee amputation, and a stroke that left him balance-impaired and unable to walk without a walker or quad cane. Bill and Marie were able to remain in the home they built and loved, due to the help of family and friends, especially Jim and Pauline Pope, who kept the snow away for Marie while Bill was in rehab or unable to manage it himself.

Special thanks also go to the gang at Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and the At Home Care therapists and nurses, who got him up and walking after he lost his leg. The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge Dr. Peter Howard, Bill's personal physician, who carefully monitored and helped Bill manage his health issues for more than 20 years and the magnificent staff at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, who helped him through crisis after crisis.

In addition to his beloved wife, Marie, Bill is survived by his three devoted daughters, Lois Rosenkranz of West Laurens, Cathy (and husband Kurt) Umbach of Palm Coast, Fla., and Judy (and husband Scott) McDonough of Clinton; grandchildren, David and Jason Grimm, and Katie and Michelle McDonough; great-grandchildren, Petey and Jocelyn Grimm; and several cousins; niece, Larraine Freedell and her family; and nephew, Edward Weingartner and his family.

He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Ruth Weingartner.

Calling hours will be on Saturday and Sunday, March 6 and 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father John Burns at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Morris on March 8 at 11 a.m. Military honors will be rendered outside the church following the Mass by a seven man honor guard coordinated by Bill's grandson, SPC4 Jason Grimm. Grandson David Grimm, Air Force 1st Lt., is also participating.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, NYS Memorial Processing Center, PO Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150. Contribution envelopes are available at Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Burial will be in the spring at Hillington Cemetery in Morris.
