Robert F. Ruder

Robert F. Ruder, 83, formerly of Knolltop Terrace and Alterra at Summerfield Village, Syracuse, died Friday. Born in Ilion, he graduated from Most Holy Rosary High School and Syracuse University in 1940. He retired in 1983 after more than 30 years as founder and owner of R.F. Ruder Insurance Agency. He was a woodwind musician and flautist, playing with the Syracuse Symphony and various local orchestras in the 1930s and 1940s. He was a communicant of St. Ann's Church in Taunton and a member of Bellevue Country Club, both for more than 40 years. He retired from the Navy in 1978 as a lieutenant commander and served in World War II. His wife, the former Rita Finkbeiner, died in 1991; a daughter, Sharon R. Karwoski, died in 2000. Survivors: A son, Christopher R. of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Marie R. Goodfellow and Catherine A. Manning, both of Syracuse; three grandchildren. Services: 9:30 a.m. Monday at Whelan Bros. Margaret A. Cotter Schmick, 77, of Fairmount died Friday. Born in Syracuse, she graduated in 1942 from Vocational High School. She was a sales clerk at Dey Brothers department store. She was a communicant of Holy Family Church and a member of its Altar & Rosary Society and senior citizens club. She was a member of Solvay Bowling League. Her husband, John W., died in 1994. Ralph W. Stevenson, 76, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., died Feb. 13. He was born and lived 47 years in Syracuse before moving away in 1972. He graduated from St. Patrick's High School and Syracuse University. He retired in 1990 from management at Swift Ekrich in Chicago, Ill., after 40 years. He was a communicant of St. Lucie Catholic Church and was an honorary member of Alpha Delta Sigma Fraternity. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Orsea "Ora" Lamo Gamble, 74, of 1207 Almond St., Syracuse, died Friday. Born in Utica, she attended Utica public schools. She was a therapist aide for many years at the Syracuse Developmental Center and worked at Utica State Hospital for 25 years. She was a former member of Lilies of the Field Chapter 317, Order of the Eastern Star. She attended Fountain of Life Ministries and was saint and mother of the church. She retired in 1975 after 10 years as operator of Clockville Nursing Home and had been part owner of Four Sisters Restaurant in Chittenango. She was a member of the former Canastota Chapter 64, Order of the Eastern Star, and Oneida Chapter 21, Order of the Eastern Star. She also was a member of Canastota Rebekah Lodge 247 and Canastota Volunteer Fire Department Women's Auxiliary. Her husband of 44 years, Arthur, died in 1967.
