Bessie May Smith

EDMESTON — Bessie May Smith, 82, of Edmeston passed peacefully into the Lords arms Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003.

She was born Nov. 24, 1921, in Pittsfield, the daughter of Melvin and Mary (Ferguson) Smith.

Bessie befriended many people from Edmeston, Pittsfield, and most recently in New Berlin, where she resided at Chase Nursing Home.

She loved all her six dogs and enjoyed the sincere pleasure that they extended towards her.

Bessie is survived by many friends.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Emaline Smith, Gladys Smith and Phoebe Bargy; and her brother, Frank Smith.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Arrangements by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Anna Dohse

SIDNEY — Anna (Fucci) Dohse, 84, of Sidney, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, following a long illness.

She was born and raised in Cadosia on May 11, 1919. The daughter of the late Dominic Fucci and Orsula (Esce) Fucci, she was a graduate of Hancock High School in Hancock.

Anna was also a graduate of the Southern Tier Beauty Academy in Binghamton. She owned and operated a beauty parlor in Deposit in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Anna also worked as a beautician in Sidney in the early 1940s. She began working at the Sidney Central School cafeteria in 1958 and retired in 1984 as the head cook.

Anna was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney and a member of the church Rosary Society. She was a former member of the Sidney BPW. She was a member of the town election board.

She was the wife of the late Howard C. Dohse, who died in July 1987. They married in Albany on June 3, 1945.

She is survived by one son, Dennis R. Dohse, and his wife, Cynthea C. Dohse of Brewster, Mass.; one grandson, Zay M. Dohse of Boston, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends called at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, on Monday, Dec. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30.

Internment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Donations in her memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Stanley E. Rogers

STAMFORD — Stanley E. Rogers, 59, of Robinson Terrace, a skilled nursing facility, Stamford, died Saturday morning at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Born April 25, 1944, in Blenheim, he was the son of the late Allen J. and Mable (Case) Rogers.

He is survived by sisters, Myrtle Speenburg, Jefferson, and Elizabeth Miller, and a brother-in-law, Robert Miller, Jefferson; brothers, Ivan and sister-in-law MaryJane Rogers, Jefferson, and Alfred and sister-in-law Fay Rogers of Davenport; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.

Stanley was predeceased by his sister, Marion Covati; and three brothers, Richard, Donald and Ronald.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Frank Adams. Friends may call Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Ashland

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Schoharie County ARC.

Gerald W. Rockwell

LAURENS — Gerald Wayne "Jerry" Rockwell, 54 years of age, of Laurens, passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at his home.

He was born Aug. 26, 1949, in Herkimer, the son of Gerald E. and Lena S. (Varin) Rockwell.

Jerry worked at Pickett's Building Supply until his illness in October 2001 required him to stop working.

He enjoyed motorcycle riding, watching Westerns on television, and most of all he loved spending time with his wife and children. Jerry touched many lives and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Deanna Schaeffer Rockwell, of Laurens; his children, Jerry and Tammy Rockwell of California, Brandi, Shawn and Shyanne Rockwell, all of Laurens; his brothers and sisters, Patricia and Jim Weller of California, Donna Rockwell and her son of California, and Robert Rockwell and Ronald Rockwell, both of Herkimer; his sister-in-law, Pam Owens of Mohawk and her daughters, Billi-Jo, Bobbi-Sue and Alicia; his brothers-in-law, Robert and Paula Robinson of Mount Vision and Richard Robinson of Otego; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Gerald E. and Lena S. Rockwell; and his grandparents, Elmer and Elizabeth Rockwell and Adolph and Sarah Varin.

Jerry's family would like to extend a special "Thank You" to Dr. Matsuo, Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Deanna's sister, Pam Owens and her girls, and Liz Lang for their kindness and compassion they shared during Jerry's illness.

A service to celebrate the life of Gerald Wayne "Jerry" Rockwell will be held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Laurens Presbyterian Church, Laurens, with the Rev. Harry Myers, pastor of the church, officiating. Calling hours will be offered on Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m.

It has been requested, that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a scholarship fund that will be set up for his children, care of Harry Myers, Laurens Presbyterian Church, 3 Main St., Laurens, NY 13796 in loving memory of Jerry Rockwell.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Lewis J. Laskaris

ONEONTA — Lewis John Laskaris passed peacefully into the Lord's arms on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

Lou was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. John Laskaris on July 26, 1923, in Oneonta.

He served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the Asian-Pacific Theater.

Lou married Bea Smith of Schenevus on Sept. 6, 1953. They recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.

He worked for 33 years along side of the late "Dutch" Damaschke as Supervisor of the City of Oneonta Recreation Department. It was the efforts of Lou and Dutch who initiated many of our city's recreational programs today, from swimming lessons, softball leagues and many cold nights skating on Neahwa Pond.

An active member of his community, he was a member of the Oneonta Lions Club, the American Legion and an usher for many years with the St. James Episcopal Church of Oneonta. Lou's love for bowling gave him many enjoyable years with teammates and friends.

Lou is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bea Laskaris; his two daughters, Andrea Smith and her husband, James Gordon, of Monroe, Conn., and Karen Sullivan and her husband, William, of Oneonta; and four grandchildren, Eric and Brian Smith of Connecticut and Katie and Joe Sullivan of Oneonta; along with a sister, Anne Poritz, of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Lou was predeceased by his brother, Harry Laskaris.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Kenneth Hunter, pastor of St. James Episcopal Church, officiating. Calling hours will be offered on Friday at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m.

Burial will be held in the spring in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Foundation, 1 FoxCare Drive, Suite 214, Oneonta, NY 13820 for the wonderful care and compassion given by the doctors and nursing staff at ICU and 2 North of Lewis J. Laskaris.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Scott M. Perry

OTEGO — Scott Michael Perry of Otego died Dec. 28, 2003, at Oneonta.

He was born Dec. 1, 1987, in Cooperstown, to Samuel Henry Perry Jr. and Jody Ann Dealing Perry.

Scott was a 10th-grade student at Unatego High School.

Scott loved raising pigeons, ducks and other animals, riding the all-terrain vehicle, model cars and collecting tools. He also loved helping his brothers on woodworking projects, and as a mechanics helper.

Scott was a very forgiving and unselfish person and will be dearly missed by his friends and family.

Scott is survived by his dad, Sam, and mom, Jody Perry, of Otego; sisters, Ann Frear of Oneonta, Shannon Clapper of Iowa, and Chrissy Perry of Otego; brothers, Sammy Perry of Otego and Floyd Perry of Otego; grandmother, Pauline Perry of Norwich; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Moreland of North Carolina; grandfather, Robert Dealing of Sherburne; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers; stepgrandmother, Betty Dealing; and an aunt, Joan Perry.

Calling hours will be Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. Funeral service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home.

Burial will be in the spring in Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association in Scott's memory.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Franklyn C. Holdridge

ASHLAND — Franklyn C. Holdridge, a lifelong resident of Ashland died Dec. 28, 2003, at his home, surrounded by family and friends, after a long battle with cancer.

Frank was born April 7, 1940, in Ashland. He worked for Greene County Highway Department for 32 years, and retired in May 2002.

He is survived by his wife, and best friend, Bonnie; children, Lisa (Holdridge) and Ben Hamilton of Prattsville, David and Lori (Barber) Holdridge of Maplecrest, Deb (Sutton) and Eric Goettsche of Windham, Randy Sutton of Ashland, BonnieJean (Pilaar) and Peter Diamond of Prattsville, and daughter-in-law, Vickie (Maben) Sutton of Jewett; a sister, Lula and George Anderson of Ashland; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Larry and Linda Soule of Bloomville; and sister-in-law, Joan Holdridge of Ashland; 15 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins; and extended family members.

He is predeceased by his parents, Gladys (Tompkins) and Leslie; sisters, Florence Kiley and Louise Armstrong; brothers, Walter and George; and a son, Gerry Sutton.

Frank was best known for his witty sense of humor, and his accomplishments as a country and western musician, of which he spent his whole life performing. In 1968, he started the locally famous "The Mustangs," in which he played lead guitar, and sang for over 30 years. In 1974, he began playing the pedal steel guitar, the instrument he loved best, and gave his final performance on the steel on Oct. 10 playing with The Mustangs.

In October of this year, Frank was honored at the New York State Country Music Hall of Fame in Cortland, for his outstanding contributions and distinguished achievements in the Country Music Industry.

Frank loved people, and they loved him back. He has had a large group of followers who traveled many miles over the years to hear him sing and play.

He was devoted to his family, and good friends, country music, and dancing with his Sweetie.

Contributions in his name can be made to the NYS Country Music Hall of Fame, Box 402, Route 13, Cortland, NY 13045 or to Columbia Greene Hospice, Catskill, NY 12414.

Calling hours will be at the Decker Funeral Home, Windham, on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the Ashland United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Ashland.

Kenneth S. Hatton

WESTFORD — Kenneth S. Hatton, 95, died Dec. 27, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born Aug. 17, 1908, in Espyville Station, Pa., the son of Roland H. and Lorena Blanche (Steele) Hatton.

He married Claire Fallon on July 1, 1946, at St. Bartholomew Church in Old Forge. She predeceased him on April 20, 1997.

Mr. Hatton was an accountant at Chase Chevrolet Inc. in Worcester, retiring in 1985, and was a member of the Worcester United Methodist Church.

He is survived by four half-sisters, Nathalie Price of Meadville, Pa., Geraldine Heil of Leesburgh, Fla., Frances Smith of Lady Lake, Fla., and Martha Western of Denver, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be at the Riverview Cemetery in Old Forge at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Worcester Emergency Squad, PO Box 191, Worcester, NY 12197.

Arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Olga L. Patrickson

EDMESTON — Olga L. Patrickson, 89, currently residing in Clinton, went home to the Lord early Saturday morning, Dec. 27, 2003.

She was born Aug. 9, 1914, in Bridgeport, Conn., the daughter of Oscar and Matilda (Johnsson) Swanson.

She married Gunnar E. Patrickson on May 30, 1940, in her hometown of Bridgeport. He predeceased her on March 3, 1994.

Olga and her husband Gunnar began their lives together in Connecticut, where he had been employed as a toolmaker and Olga as a seamstress. In 1946, they moved to Edmeston, began the family dairy farm and where they raised their family.

She was a very talented seamstress, well-known for her wedding dresses. Olga was very interested in nature and would enjoy all the aspects of camping which probably stemmed from her being one of the first Girl Scouts of America.

She and her husband were members of the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston and also belonged to the Scandinavian Club.

Olga is survived by her children and their spouses, Linnea and Donald McDonald of Cassville, David and Mary Patrickson of Finley, Ohio, and Carl and Carolyn Patrickson of Mexico; two grandchildren, Bryan McDonald and his wife, Andrea, and Lisa Greene and her husband, Kris; five great-grandchildren; and her sister, Lillian Chapman of Florida.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Lauren House officiating. Calling hours will be from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the service on Tuesday.

Contributions may be made in Olga's memory to either the Alzheimer's Association or the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
