Beryl G. Zachary

COOPERSTOWN — Beryl Gwendolyn Zachary died Wednesday evening, Sept. 24, 2003, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She had been a resident of The Meadows for the past two years where she was known as "Miss Beryl" because of her lovely Southern accent. She was 92 years old.

Mrs. Zachary is survived by her son, Charles Zachary of Oneonta; daughter Gwendolyn Ermlich of Cooperstown, and daughter Annlee Skinner of Newport News, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Juanita Sarres; and a brother, Clyde Johnson.

She was predeceased by her son, Ronald.

Mrs. Zachary was a commercial artist having been taught as a little girl by her father, who owned the first paint shop in Newport News. Most of her work years were spent working for the government at Fort Eustis. During the war years she painted the Insignia Plaques for every division in the service which lined the walls of the Port of Embarkation. These plaques are now a part of the War Museum at the Mariners Museum in her hometown.

Always the Eternal Mother, she adopted most of the German Army prisoners who were incarcerated at Fort Eustis, sending Care packages home to their families and writing letters to tell their families that they were well. She often supplied them with paint and canvasses to help fill their time and smuggled in goodies.

She raised four children by herself, sometimes working three jobs and keeping the house. She was inordinately proud of her children and a doting grandmother who rocked a million miles. She taught her children to be loving, caring people: not a bad heritage.

She prepared for hurricanes all her life in Virginia, and was always disappointed as they veered off. Her funeral will have to be delayed now until restoration in Virginia is complete.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts in Beryl's memory may be made to the Activities Fund at The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, NY 13326.
