William R. Avery
RENO, Nev. — William R. Avery, formerly of Franklin, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, in Reno, after a long illness.
Bill was born in Huntington, on Feb. 29, 1956. He moved to Franklin with his family in 1967, and attended Franklin Central School.
In 1976, he went to California, where he worked and lived until moving to Reno last spring.
He is survived by two daughters, Anika and Liona Avery of Los Angeles; by his mother, Elizabeth Avery of Oneonta; and by six siblings and their families, Lee Avery of Fremont, Calif., Anne-Louise Avery of Oneonta, Caroline Avery of Bisbee, Ariz., Daniel Avery of Washington State, Judith O'Neill of Charlottesville, Va., and John Avery of Oneonta.
There will be a simple memorial service on Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of St. Paul's Church in Franklin.
Anna Mary Mattice
NORTH BLENHEIM — Anna Mary (nee Stiber) Mattice, 76, of North Blenheim, residing in Clifton Park, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at the home of her daughter, after a year-long battle with cancer.
Mrs. Mattice was married on Sept. 2, 1946, to Clarence Mattice, for 51 years before the passing of her husband in June 1997.
She is survived by her 11 children, Sonny and wife Carol of Pensacola, Fla., Art and wife Paulette of Gilboa, Linda of Hannacroix, Tom and wife Jerri of North Blenheim, Susan Huggins and husband Alan of Prattsville, Lorraine of Schoharie, Barbara Thrane and husband Bruce of Clifton Park, Anna Thrane and husband Jim of Mechanicville, Sheila of Clifton Park, Michael and wife Patti of Windham and Dennis and wife Darlene of Prattsville; 21 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Alton of Hobart; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, John Stiber of Pennsylvania, and a sister, Theresa Maher of Stamford.
She enjoyed knitting for family and friends. She was employed as an assembly worker for 30-plus years at Audiosears Corp. of Stamford.
Calling hours will be Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Stamford Baptist Church, Route 10, 40 Lake St., Stamford, with Pastor Waylon Bray officiating. Burial will follow at the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

PEORIA, Ariz. — Kenneth D. Sherman, formerly of Oneonta, who passed away Aug. 27, 2003, was a former member of First Church of Christ, Science of Oneonta; and later the Sun City West, Arizona Church.

ONEONTA — Janet McNorton, 83, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, in A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
She was born Feb. 11, 1920, in Freemont Center, daughter of Arthur and Myrna (Ward) Will.
She married Ernest E. Sprague. He predeceased her on Jan. 30, 1963.
Janet was an assistant cook in the Oneonta School District. She retired 11 years ago. She also worked for Elmore Milling, Oneonta.
Janet is survived by her four daughters, Priscilla Sprague, Middletown, Donna Spoor, Mount Vision, Joyce and Cyrus Budine, New Berlin, and Janet and Ozzie Bunt, Hartwick; two sons, Ernest and Catherine Sprague, Maryland, and Gary and Judy Sprague, Cooperstown; one sister, Dorothy Somers, Binghamton; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Will, Chenango Bridge, and Virginia Barnhart, Sidney; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock. Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the chapel, with the Rev. Cyrus Budine Jr., officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Hancock.

Kate Nazaroveck
ROCHESTER — Kate Nazaroveck, died Sept. 3, 2003, in Rochester. She was formerly of Grand Gorge.
She is survived by her husband, Walter Nazaroveck; her children, Richard (Gale) Kolosek, Robert Kolosek, Catherine Humphreys, Donarae McElroy and Joanne Cicero; several grandchildren including, Barbaranne, John and James; several great-grandchildren; and her sister, Ann Zenyuck.
Family and friends are invited to attend her Memorial Mass at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Church of the Assumption, 20 East Ave., Fairport.

OCALA, Fla. — A graveside ceremony and committal service for Shirley Carpenter Fowler, who died April 26, 2003, in Ocala, Fla., will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery with the Rev. Douglas Deer, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Kurt Arno Hecker
WEST EDMESTON — Kurt Arno Hecker, 81, of West Edmeston, passed away Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
He was born May 22, 1922, in Basal, Switzerland, the son of Curt Arno Hecker and Martha Bruder Hecker.
He married the former Betty Jane Wells on Dec. 7, 1942, in Richmond Hill on Long Island.
Kurt was a cabinetmaker and was co-owner of Mid Valley Millwork in West Edmeston, prior to his retirement.
Kurt was raised in Germany until he was 8 years old. He moved to the United States in 1930. He had been a resident of West Edmeston for 42 years. Before that, he lived in St. Albans, Long Island.
From 1963 to the present, he was very involved in his church, St. John Lutheran Church of West Burlington, where he served as a council member, deacon and president of the church council for 40 years.
Kurt was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed tending to his flower garden. He enjoyed cabinet making and working with wood as well as doing some baking.
Kurt is survived by his wife, Betty Jane Hecker, of West Edmeston; five sons and daughters-in-law, Skip and Pat Hecker of Oriskany Falls, Bruce and Ellen Hecker of Cassville, Paul and Lynne Hecker of West Edmeston, Warren and Jo Ann Hecker of Stockwell, and Mark and Georgia Hecker of Bridgewater; one daughter, Karenlynn Royer of New Berlin; his brother, Carl Hecker of West Edmeston; his sister, Helen Fast of Florida; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, from St. John Lutheran Church, 2546 Route 80, West Burlington, with the Rev. Lynn Ash, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, officiating.
Friends are invited to call at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, 30 South St., Edmeston, on Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that expressions of sympathy be given to St. John Lutheran Church, 2546 Route 80, West Burlington, NY 13482 or the American Diabetes Association, 1508 Genesee St., Utica, NY 13502 in memory of Kurt Arno Hecker.
Interment will be in Leonardsville Cemetery, Leonardsville.

Mary Kellar
HERKIMER — Mary Kellar, 87, of North Washington Street entered into eternal life on Thursday evening, Sept. 4, 2003, in Little Falls Hospital.
She was born on Nov. 11, 1915, in Watertown. At one time she worked as a nurse's aide for various health facilities in northern New York. A resident of Folts Homes in Herkimer since May of 1998, she came to Folts from the Rosewood Terrace in Richfield Springs.
She had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Catholic life.
The staff of Folts Homes will always remember her as a loving, caring and hopeful person. She will be greatly missed by the staff and residents of Folts. Mary leaves no immediate relatives.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. The Rev. Mark Cunningham, Pastor of Saint Francis deSales Church will officiate.
Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home Inc. Herkimer.
Bertha Lucy Phelps
BAINBRIDGE — Bertha Lucy Phelps passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, surrounded by her family.
Bert was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved her family and always tried to help other people.
Bert is survived by her husband of 58 years, Donald Phelps; sons, Dana and Alan; daughter-in-law, Karen Phelps, and granddaughters, Becky and Katie, who were her pride and joy; a sister, Esther Young, and her husband, Thornton; sister-in-law, Lucile Ward; niece, Darla Colvard, and her husband, Tom; nephews, Denis Young and wife Linda, Vincent Ward and wife Rae, and special friend Carmen Mills.
Friends may call Sunday, Sept. 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Funeral Chapel.
Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

Garret Huyer
ONEONTA — Garret Huyer of Oneonta, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003.
He was born on Aug. 10, 1923, in Clifton, N.J., the son of the late Peter F. Huyer and Johanna VandenBeldt Huyer.
He was married to Jane Hunt on June 5, 1949, in Oneonta. Mr. Huyer was a graduate of Pearl River High School, Pearl River, and Hartwick College, Oneonta, in 1949.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945, spending two years overseas during World War II in the European Theater.
He was an independent salesman for more than 30 years with Josten's of Owatonna, Minn., retiring in 1983.
He was a member of the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church and served as a ruling elder. He was also a member of the Oneonta Country Club, the Men's Golf Association, the Men's Tuesday Night League, the Elks Club, the Hartwick College Citizens Board, serving as president for two years, and was a former member of the Oneonta City Zoning Board of Appeals.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Thea Gonsales and Susanne Horne, and one brother, Peter Huyer.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jane Hunt Huyer, of Oneonta; a daughter, Lizbeth Herrick and her husband, Craig, of Liverpool; a son, Garret H. Huyer and his wife, Lisa, of South Burlington, Vt.; four grandchildren, Jake Herrick, Sam Herrick, Daniel Huyer and Lindsay Huyer; a sister, Anne Bertola and her husband, Hugo, of Virginia; a brother; Edward Huyer and his wife, June, of Maryland; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Sept. 15, 2003, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. A brief memorial service will be held at the East Meredith Presbyterian Church, East Meredith, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, with the Rev. Carol Wilson, pastor of the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, officiating. A private internment will follow the service.

Harold E. Mulkins
ONEONTA — Harold E. Mulkins, 81, of Oneonta died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born May 23, 1922, in Oneonta, the son of the late Frank B. and Orilla E. (Wright) Mulkins.
He married Elsie Parsons on Nov. 10, 1950, in Franklin. Harold was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
A lifelong area resident, Harold was the manager of the Western Union Telegraph Co. in Oneonta for 32 years. He then worked as the mailroom supervisor at SUCO for 14 years before retiring. Harold also held the position of the assessor for the town of Oneonta for 28 years.
He was a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta; a charter member of the Otsego County Assessors Association; an honorary member of the West Oneonta Fire Department, retiring as first assistant chief after 15 years of service; and a former assistant scoutmaster for Troop 11 in West Oneonta.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elsie Mulkins, of Oneonta; two sons, David C. Mulkins of Oneonta and Douglas E. Mulkins of Oneonta; one grandson, Michael Mulkins and his wife, Terri, and her son, Jody; one brother, George Mulkins of Bainbridge; one sister, Eloise St. Onge of Burnt Hills; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Harold is also survived by one brother, George Mulkins, and his wife, Helen of Bainbridge; and one sister, Eloise St. Onge, and her husband, Earl of Burnt Hills.
Harold was predeceased by one brother, DeForrest Mulkins.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery. Calling hours will be offered on Wednesday at the funeral home from noon until service time.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the West Oneonta Fire Department, West Oneonta, NY 13861 or to the charity of one's choice, in loving memory of Harold E. Mulkins.
