Olive Root
SIDNEY — Olive Root of Sidney passed away late Tuesday evening, Sept. 2, 2003, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney.
Olive was born on Dec. 14, 1909, in Bridgeton, N.J., and was the only child of John and Mary Stiles.
After graduating from high school in Bridgeton, Olive relocated to Sidney in the late 1920s. She met the love of her life, Floyd A. Root, and they were married in 1937. Floyd predeceased Olive in 2000, after over 50 years of a fun and fulfilling marriage.
Olive is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Janet Root of Chester, N.J.; two grandchildren and their spouses, Mark and Nicole Root of Charlottesville, Va., and Mary and Scott Hosier of Mahwah, N.J. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Madison Root, and Jacob, Jillian and Karalyn Hosier.
A son, John Root, predeceased her in 1995.
Olive loved the community in which she lived for over 70 years. For many years she was actively involved in her beloved St. Paul's Episcopal Church and volunteered her considerable talents in various community affairs too numerous to mention.
Olive spent many years as an ardent Girl Scout leader, embodying the Girl Scout spirit and earning the love and respect of two generations of local girls.
Friends may call on Sunday evening, Sept. 7, 2003, between 6 and 8 p.m. at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., in Sidney. A funeral will be held Monday, Sept. 8, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 25 River St., in Sidney.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the Skilled Nursing Facility at The Hospital in Sidney.
Arrangements are being made under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel in Sidney.
Shirley P. Byrd
ORMAND-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. — Shirley P. Byrd went to be with her Lord and Savior at her home, Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003. She was 69 years old.
Mrs. Byrd, a homemaker, moved here in 1999. She has also resided in Edmeston, Macon, Georgia, Indiana, California and England.
She was an active member of Tomoka Christian Church. She also enjoyed gardening and the beach.
Her husband, Walter Byrd, predeceased her in 1985.
She is survived by her three sons, Warren Byrd and his wife, Doreen, and their two children, Indianapolis; Keith and his wife, Joy, and their four children, Loxahatchee; and Roger and his wife, Shannon, and their four children, Rochester; and a stepdaughter, Kathy and her husband, Jim, and their son, Waynesville. Also, by her mother, Ella Warrell of Australia; and two sisters, Olive Murphy, San Diego, and Rose Glennon of Australia.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her memory to: Tomoka Christian Church, 1151 Granada Blvd., Ormand Beach, FL 32174.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at Tomoka Christian Church.

Emile Tophoven
LEESBURG, Fla. — A committal service for Emile Tophoven, 87, of Leesburg, and formerly of Edmeston, who passed away Aug. 22, 2003, will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at the Edmeston Union Cemetery in Edmeston, with the Rev. Jay Noll officiating.
Linda O'Hara
MOUNT UPTON — Linda (Winikoff) O'Hara of Mount Upton, town of Unadilla, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at her residence.
She is survived by her husband, Richard C. O'Hara; her brother, Richard Winikoff; three children, Daniel R. Nash, Kimberly M. Nash, and Michael B. Stone and his wife, Gina, and their five children and four stepchildren.
Linda will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known the wonderful person she was.
At her request there will be no services or calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820: in thanks to the staff who assisted us during this difficult time.

Lowell E. Lewis
EAST BRANCH — Lowell E. Lewis, 87, of East Branch, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, Pa.
He was born on June 16, 1916, in East Branch, son of Leon and Leola (Williams) Lewis.
He married Grace Conklin on Oct. 15, 1939, in Binghamton.
He was the owner and manager of Red Carpet Motor Inn, Stamford.
He was a member of the Elks Club, Lone Palm Golf & Country Club, and the Stamford Presbyterian Church. He was a longtime resident of Stamford.
He is survived by his wife, Grace E. Lewis, East Branch; son and daughter-in-law, L. Gary and Ginger Lewis, East Branch; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Mike Garrett, Baltimore, Md.; six grandchildren, Corey and Leigh Lewis, Richard and Beth Rausch, William, Gregory and Robert Zorella; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by one brother, Rexford Lewis; and two sisters, Madeline Suits and Vera Skinner.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the East Branch Fire Department or the East Branch Rescue Squad.

Margaret Coulter
DELHI — Margaret Hoyt Coulter, 87, a longtime Delhi resident, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 3, 2003, at her home after a long illness.
She was born on Aug. 2, 1916, in Downsville, to George Hoyt and Shirley Signor Hoyt.
She married Burton A. Coulter on Oct. 19, 1939.
Margaret was a graduate of Delaware Academy Class of 1934 and of Albany Business College. She became owner and operator of The Delhi Diner in the 1950s.
Margaret was an avid "New York Times — Sunday Edition" crossword puzzle fanatic. She also enjoyed knitting, sewing, cooking, baking and always her Daytime Soap favorites. She was a lifelong member of the Rebekah Lodge No. 318.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Burton, in 1969, as well as her brother, Robert S. Hoyt of Grand Gorge.
She is survived by her brother, James R. Hoyt of Delhi; her niece, Virginia A. Hoyt of Delhi and New York City; her nephew, John A. Hoyt of Delhi, her nephew, George R. Hoyt and his wife, Susan of Alexandria, Va.; her niece, Patricia Hoyt-Macki and her husband, Eric of San Lorenzo, Calif.; her nephew, Brian P. Hoyt and his wife, Susan of Hamden, her nephew, Jeffery E. Hoyt and his wife, Donna of Hamden; and several great- and great-great- nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give special thanks to her Homecare Nurses Cynthia Cobb of Delhi and Patti Hobbs also of Delhi, the Ambulatory Staff of O'Connor Hospital, Dr. A. Budnickus of Walton, the Circle of Life Ambulance Staff, Public Health Nursing staff, as well as other nurses whose care made her life comfortable.
A special thanks to Margaret Hilson, Choices Volunteer and Catskill Area Hospice. Special prayers and thanks to those friends who visited her often these past four years. Your friendship and love meant a great deal to her during her illness.
A service to celebrate her life and crossing over will be held on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Clinton Street, Delhi, with the Rev. Miriam Hathaway, Fr. Edward Ryan, and Commissioned Lay Pastor John W. Truscott, officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Burial will follow the service in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the Woodland Cemetery Association, 2 Orchard St., Delhi, NY 13753, to help them clear the massive storm damage they suffered last month.
Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.
Zana Reynolds
TROUT CREEK — Zana Reynolds of Trout Creek died on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at the A. O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta. She was 85.
Mrs. Reynolds was born April 23, 1918, in Trout Creek to Al and Bertha Northrup Beardslee.
On Jan. 2, 1940, she married Albert J. Reynolds in Sidney Center. He predeceased her in 1977.
Mrs. Reynolds was a member of the Trout Creek Community Church, Trout Creek Fire Department Women's Auxiliary and the senior citizen's club of Trout Creek.
She enjoyed sewing, traveling, Bingo, playing cards with her neighbors, baby-sitting and caring for children — about half of Trout Creek — and being active around people.
Mrs. Reynolds is survived by her sons, Glen of Sidney Center, Richard of East Branch, Joseph (Phyllis) of Trout Creek, Tim of Delhi, Edwin (Susan) of Trout Creek and Gene of Trout Creek; her daughters, Marjorie (Raymond) Cornwell of Deposit, Dawn (Taylor) Colvard of Dallas, Texas, and Sue Geer and friend Ron of Hancock. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Family members who died earlier include her husband, Albert, her brother, Glen Beardslee, and her sisters, Kathryn Doig (Fuller) and Wanda Cummings.
Friends may call at the Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Her family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the funeral home, with Pastor David Gatje officiating.
Interment will be in Carroll Cemetery, Trout Creek.
Memorial donations, to the Trout Creek Community Church, in her name would be appreciated.
Georgia Asquith
ONEONTA — Georgia "Jo" Asquith, 91, of Oneonta, passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 28, 1912, in Ipswitch, Mass., the daughter of Ernest and Pota (Kyriazes) Mustacaros.
She married Austen E. Asquith on Jan. 6, 1943. He predeceased her on June 28, 1970.
Georgia moved to Brooklyn in 1917, and lived in the New York area until moving to Laurens in 1949. She moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1975, and then back to Oneonta in 1994.
Jo worked at Bendix Electrical Components in Sidney for 25 years as an inspector.
She was a lifetime member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers — Local No. 1529. She also was past president of Philoptohos Society and three-year treasurer of the church board for St. Stefanis Greek Orthodox Church, St. Petersburg. Jo was a proud member of the "Happy Hookers" rug hooking group and won awards for her hooked rugs at the Florida State Fair.
Her greatest joy of all was her family in which she took enormous pride.
She is survived by her sons, Austen C. and his wife, Sherry, Asquith of Morris, and William S. Asquith of Otego; her daughters, Mercedes K. Rogers of Orlando, Fla., and Betty and her husband, Brian, Powell of Franklin; her grandchildren, Michael Rogers of Laurens, Donna and her husband, Mark, Ward of Loxahatchee, Fla., Jeffrey and his wife, Nancy, Powell of Oneonta, David and his wife, Sharon, Powell of Franklin, Linda and her husband, Tom, Tolley of Franklin, Karen Pierce of Morris, Austen Asquith of Morris, and Brian Asquith of Morris; great-grandchildren, Kasey Pierce, Eric Platt, Brianna Tolley, Thomas Tolley and Tara Rogers; a great-great-granddaughter, Mia Quinones. She is also survived by her brother, William Mustacaros of St. Petersburg; also several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brothers, John, James and Charles Mustacaros; and her sisters, Anna Kavakos, Louise Zipp and Mary Zanatakos.
Funeral services for Georgia "Jo" Asquith will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Christopher Ellis, pastor of the Mount Vision Bible Baptist Church, officiating.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Bookhout Funeral Home, at which time the family will be in attendance.
Burial will take place in Laurens Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Marie E. Jones
ONEONTA — Marie E. Jones, 50, passed away Sept. 6, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
She was born Aug. 2, 1953, the daughter of Lucal Jones in Binghamton.
She graduated from Sidney High School and received a business degree from SUNY Delhi. She also had training as a lawyer assistant.
Marie served as the tax collector for the Oneonta City School District, where she has been employed for 30 years. She spent a lot of time doing extra work such as designing the website for the Oneonta school district. She also enjoyed her job as a bookkeeper for Asbury Gardens.
She was a member of the Catskill Area Association of Educational Office Professionals, a former president and valued member of the Oneonta City Schools Clerical Association and currently served as the treasurer. Also, on behalf of the Clerical Association, she served for many years on the Negotiations Committee.
She is survived by her mother, Lucal Jones of Sidney; three brothers and two sisters and their spouses, Dino Jones of Oneonta, Charles Jones of Arizona, Art and Sandy Jones of Sidney, Lois and Bucky Simkin of the Bainbridge area, Doreen and Fred Stafford of Bainbridge; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her special friends, Scott, Michelle and Jason Hassick, and her many friends and colleagues at the Oneonta school district.
She was predeceased by her father; and by her best friend, Debbie Hassick.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.
Friends may call on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made for scholarship funds in memory of Marie E. Jones, to the Oneonta City School District, 189 Main St., Suite 302, Oneonta, NY 13820.
