Donna Marano Thienpont
ONEONTA — On Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, Donna Thienpont peacefully walked to the Lord. Her four-year battle with lymphoma ended quietly at Tufts University New England Medical Center with her family surrounding her.
Born May 25, 1956, in Brooklyn, Donna grew up in Rockville Centre, Long Island.
Her passion for learning drove her to Oneonta State where she received a master's degree in education. Donna used her degree to change the lives of hundreds of students at Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School, where she taught English for 21 years. Donna's commitment to spreading knowledge was infectious, inspiring her pupils, colleagues and friends to reach higher and discover the creativity within. She founded the Cherry Valley EXCITE program for gifted students and was the founder and adviser of the school's first literary magazine, Iridescence. For her students, her generosity of mind and spirit will provide them with eternal strength.
Donna's spirituality resonated through her love for the Catholic faith, passion for alternative healing and open-minded artistic expression. She dedicated much of her time to sharing her gifts of healing comfort with those she loved.
Donna Thienpont was the mother of three, who, in the words of her 16-year-old son, "are better people for having had her." Her wedding ring remains around the neck of her loving husband Charles, who has dedicated his life to her, in sickness and in health, for 26 years. Her parents, Attilio and Helen Marano call their first-born the apple of their eye, keeping vigil by her bed, loving and caring for her during sickness, and taking lessons from her strength daily.
Donna served as the glue of her family, demonstrating the importance of kin and creating friendship of the highest kind with her sisters, Vivian Lewandowski and Sharlene Loonam, and her brother, Stephen Marano.
Her life lessons, perseverance and faith in God will live on as tiny flames in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. Her fire will burn brightly through her children, Crystalyn, Kim and Paul, and every other child knowing the pleasure of her guidance.
Her spirit is survived by her mother and father, sisters, brother, three God children, nieces and nephews, friends, neighbors and colleagues, who will carry her with them always.
She fought to the last day, and in her death, taught us the true meaning of living.
In celebration of Donna Thienpont's life, a Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta. The Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, will officiate. An Entrance to Heaven Celebration at the Thienpont's home will follow.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to the Cam Neely Foundation, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, The American Diabetes Society and the Donors for Donna Scholarship Fund.
