Betty J. Coder
GILBERTSVILLE Betty J. Coder, 82, of Gilbertsville and formerly of Otego, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at home in Gilbertsville.
She was born on Jan. 30, 1921, in Port Chester, the daughter of John Henry McElroy and Agnes (Drought) McElroy.
She married Clifford Coder in St. Mary's Church in Port Chester, on April 5, 1942. He died Oct. 30, 1996.
She had resided with her daughter, Cheri, for the past four years and had formerly lived in Otego.
She attended the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.
Betty is survived by two children, Karin Dale Coder of Largo, Fla., and Cheri Theis and husband, Gerald, of Gilbertsville; her grandchildren, Suzanne Garnsey and husband, John, Christopher and Peter John Hanfmann, Colin, Chelsea and Whitney Theis. And, her great-grandchildren, Jake and Zoe; two sisters, Harriett Studwell and husband, Doug and Catherine Cuddy, all of Port Chester; as well as several nieces and nephews, also survive her.
She was predeceased by a son, Glenn Colin Coder, and a sister, Elenore Admunsen.
There will be no calling hours. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Port Chester. She will be entombed with her husband in Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad or the Butternut Valley Health Ministry, care of Christ Episcopal Church, Gilbertsville, N.Y., in her memory.

Daniel Fritz Jr.
ONEONTA Daniel Fritz Jr., 76, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, while on vacation in Bangor, Maine.
Dan was born on July 11, 1927, to Daniel and Dorothy Fritz, formerly of Afton. He graduated from Afton Central School in 1945, and served in the Army Medical Corps from 1946-47. On Aug. 20, 1949, he married Barbara Elizabeth Colton, also of Afton.
He graduated from Union College, Schenectady, in 1952, where he was a member of Sigma Xi fraternity. He worked for Park-Davis Company from 1952-1956 and for Bendix and Allied Signal Corporations from 1956-1986, where he was a chemical engineer and materials lab manager at his retirement.
Dan was a member of the Bendix Engineers Club, Oneonta Masonic Lodge, Oneonta Lodge BPOE Elks, Woodhaven Golf Club, Arnold Lake Association and a trustee of Oneonta Plains Cemetery. He was a member of Elm Park United Methodist Church, where he was active in the choir and served as choir director for 14 years. His many interests include fishing, golf, gardening and antiques. He enjoyed many summers with his family and friends at his camp on Arnold Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Oneonta, and by his two sons, Robert, his wife, Christine, and their two children, Robert and Barbara of Staatsburg, and Randall and his fiancι, Joanne Manderville, of Oneonta. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and Bill Reid of Rock City Falls, and four nephews and a niece and their families.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Elm Park United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, with interment at Oneonta Plains Cemetery following the service.
Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to Huntington Memorial Library, Oneonta, or to Elm Park United Methodist Church choir, Oneonta.
Randy L. Tietjen
ONEONTA Randy L. Tietjen, 50, of Oneonta, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at the New England Medical Center in Boston.
He was born Sept. 23, 1952, in Walton, the son of Albro D. and Barbara (Murphy) Tietjen. He married Susan McLean on Sept. 23, 1978, in Walton.
He was a graduate of Delhi Tech, and since 1974, Randy had been employed at Custom Electronics in Oneonta as a design engineer.
For the past five years, Randy coached Little League, as well as Rotary basketball and Saturday Rec League soccer.
He was a former member of BPOE 1312, Oneonta.
He is survived by his wife, Susan M. Tietjen of Oneonta; his two sons, Eric and Michael Tietjen of Oneonta; his father and mother, Albro and Barbara Tietjen of Walton; his paternal grandfather, Harry Tietjen of Walton; a brother and sister-in-law, Lynn and Deborah Tietjen of Walton, and their children, Tricia Tietjen of Oneonta and Tiffany Tietjen of Walton.
He is also survived by three uncles, Harry L. Tietjen of Walton, Ray Murphy of Walton and Peter Murphy of Tallahassee, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Pamela Brizzee and her husband, John, of Walton, and their two children, Casey and Tyler.
Friends may call Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, from 6 to 8 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 1 p.m. in the Walton Cemetery.
The family has requested no flowers and would appreciate memorial contributions to the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club, River St., Oneonta, NY 13820, or the Cam Neely House, 750 Washington St., Box 0716, Boston, MA. 02111.

Judy McGregor
MAINE Judy (Weiland) McGregor of Maine passed away at Wilson Memorial Hospital, on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003.
She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Endicott, and honorary member of "Sprit of '76" Fife and Drum Corps, Endicott, where she held several board positions at various times, twice as president. She was also a 32-year data-entry operator for Key Punch Center, AKA Corporate Business Services, USA Inc., Endicott.
She is survived by her husband, David G. McGregor; two daughters, Brenda Papa of Endwell and Kimberly Brockway of Endicott; one son, Brad Brockway of Endicott, and Stephanie Rohmann; two half sisters and brothers-in-law, Gail (Neil) McManus and Cherie Ellen (Sean) Ralph; several cousins, including a special cousin, Patricia Whitmarsh; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mary Lou (Larry) Glave, Margaret (Paul) Reitz, Martha (Thomas) Dumas, Rita Stanley, Phyllis (John) Closson, Robert (Patricia) McGregor and Carol (Timothy) Squibb.
The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Monday from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main St., Endicott, followed by a funeral mass at Most Holy Rosary Church, Maine, at 10 a.m.
Burial will be in Maine Cemetery, Maine.
Ingo H. Babral
EXETER Ingo H. Babral, 74, of Exeter, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at his home with his family by his side.
He was born Sept. 28, 1928, in Germany, the son of Hans and Eva L. Babral.
He married Hazel Jane Anderson on Sept. 27, 1964, at St. John's Lutheran Church in West Burlington.
Ingo was a self-employed dairy farmer and a proud member of the Hinman Hollow Grange. In his spare time he enjoyed watching TV game shows, especially "Jeopardy." He loved reading and the challenge of a good puzzle.
Ingo is survived by his wife, Hazel Jane; his mother, Eva, and numerous friends.
Memorial services will be held Monday, Aug., 18, at 1 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with Pastor Jay Henderson officiating.
Contributions in Ingo's memory may be forwarded to Hazel Jane Babral, 605 Cty Rt. 22, Burlington Flats, NY 13315.
Arrangements are being handled by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.
Everett R. Russell
ONEONTA Everett R. Russell, formerly of Oneonta, entered into rest on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at home in Lockport, after a lengthy illness.
He was the husband of Lois Russell, father to William (Joyce) Deverett, Jeffrey (Diane), Helen (Jim) Bates, Anne (Kenneth) Huebel, Deborah (Victor) Silvernail and the late Dennis Russell.
Everett also is survived by nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Donations may be made in Everett's memory to Niagara County Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Daniel Steinbacher
BAINBRIDGE Daniel Steinbacher, 70, of Bainbridge, formerly of Walton and Sidney Center, passed away suddenly Saturday evening, Aug. 16, 2003, in The Hospital at Sidney, after being stricken.
Dan was born in Sidney Center, the son of Maximilian and Maria Schumm Steinbacher on Nov. 5, 1932.
He married the former Dianne E. Smith on Feb. 14, 1988, at Steamboat, Colo.
Dan, most importantly, was a man who took great pride in the endeavors of his children. He encouraged their individuality with his love and understanding.
Early in his working career, he was employed by both Crawford Feeds and Breakstone's in Walton. Later he owned and operated the Walton Body Shop and a dairy farm on Russell Road in Walton. Dan was a hard worker and a good provider. He had 50 years of experience as an auto body man. In this field his artistic abilities excelled. He also both owned and operated Tritown Body Shop in Unadilla and Wheathill Body Shop in Sidney Center.
Dan enjoyed many pastimes, like hunting, fishing, traveling and socializing. His weekend activities included seeing live entertainment and the German Fest at Hunter Mountain.
He is survived by his wife, Dianne E. Steinbacher; a son, Ty Steinbacher and Rene Ippoliti of Walton; a daughter, Cynthia M. Taft of Sidney Center; a brother, Eugene Steinbacher of Russell Springs, Ky.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 35 years, Eleanor Watson Steinbacher, in 1988; a daughter, Nancy G. Pondolfino, on Feb. 1, 2003; and a sister, Margaret Belmont.
Friends may call Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Don DiGarmo, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Jefferson, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dan's memory to the American Heart Association. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available at the funeral home.
Frank A. Carroll
MORRIS Frank A. Carroll, 87, of Morris, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born Feb. 21, 1916, in Kalmaska, Mich., the son of Irving L. Carroll and May (Ennis) Carroll.
He married Lina Vanskiver in Jasper, on Dec. 27, 1940.
He was a graduate of Cornell University (Class of 1937).
He was employed as a Farm Labor Representative with the New York State Department of Labor for many years.
He and his wife had resided in Morris since 1997 and had formerly lived in Davenport Center.
Frank was a member of the Morris Baptist Church, the Cornell Alumni Association. And, in his younger years, had served on the Madison Central School Board of Education.
He is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Lina Carroll of Morris; four sons, Bruce Carroll and his wife, Laurie of Maryland, Larry Carroll and his wife, Pat, Bob Carroll and wife, Muriel, Alan Carroll and wife, Bettylou, all of Oriskany Falls. Frank was blessed with 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
A son, Ramon Carroll, and four brothers and two sisters predeceased him.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Morris Baptist Church, with the Rev. Daniel Lambertson officiating. Committal services and burial will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park, New Hartford.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Morris Emergency Squad or the Morris Baptist Church in Frank's memory.
Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
Joseph E. Reese
NEW BERLIN There will be a memorial Mass to celebrate the life of Joseph E. Reese, who passed away Aug. 6, 2003, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford. The Mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church in New Berlin, with Fr. Francis Case as celebrant.
Helen Lighte
STAMFORD Helen Lighte, 79, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, at her residence after a brief illness.
Helen was born Sept. 11, 1923, in South Kortright, the daughter of Steven and Helen (Oblinski) Kosier.
She married Edward Lighte, who predeceased her on Aug. 19, 1975.
She was a longtime employee of AudioSears, retiring in 1999, and a member of the Stamford Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.
Helen had a passion for cooking and took great pleasure in sharing her love through her culinary talents. She also enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and caring for her beloved dogs, Katie and Emily.
She was predeceased by her parents; siblings, Stella, Fred, Alex, Ben, Tony, John, Jenny, Frank and Joe; and grandson, Brett Oliver.
She will be remembered by daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and James Cable of Stamford, Gloria and Andy Palmieri of Mechanicville, Helen and Tom Travinicek of Orange Park, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Carol Lighte of Stamford; five grandchildren, Brandon Govern, Terry Lighte, Chad Oliver, Kristen Travinicek, and April Lighte; brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Barb Kosier of Loudonville; sister, Frances Hoyt of Denver, Colo.; sister-in-law, Bernie Kosier; and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank Catskill Area Hospice and family friend, Ed Burke for their care and support.

John Kersmanc
WORCESTER John Kersmanc, 82, of Decatur Road, Worcester, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, at Bassett Hospital, Cobleskill.
He was born Dec. 4, 1920, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Frank and Katy (Susnik) Kersmanc Sr. He moved to the area as a young boy and was a dairy farmer in partnership with his brother, Tony, for 49 years and since 1989, he worked with his nephew, Richard.
He was avid baseball player on the Worcester Town Team in his younger days, and an avid fan of the sport all of his life. He was a member of the Worcester Grange, Otsego County Cooperative Extension, and various Holstein associations.
He is survived by one brother, Frank Kersmanc Jr., of Decatur; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Tony Kersmanc; and two sisters, Mildred Preston and Helen Fisk.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Gary Edmister, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Richmondville, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Gerald Mereness Memorial Fund, care of Worcester Central School, to benefit students studying agriculture or to charity of your choosing.

Mahlon Hilsinger
BINGHAMTON Mahlon R. Hilsinger, 66 years of age, of River Mede Manor Nursing Home, Binghamton, and formerly of Oneonta, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at Binghamton General Hospital.
Calling hours will be offered on Thursday from 10 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m., Aug. 21, 2003, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dougherty officiating. Burial will follow in the Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Mary B. Columbia
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. Mary Brazie Columbia, 97, passed away on Monday, Aug. 11, 2003.
She was born in Hartwick, on Oct. 25, 1905.
Mary moved to Daytona Beach in the 1930s from Key West.
Mrs. Columbia was a charter member of the Drive In Church at the Volusia Drive In Theater.
She is survived by her two nephews, Ray Brazie of Ormond Beach, and Robert Brazie of Warnerville; a niece, Edna Brazie Willman of Hyndsville; and a stepson, Alan Columbia of Daytona Beach.
