Albert D. Sebastian

BLOOMVILLE — Albert David Sebastian Sr., died Aug. 4, 2003, at his home with his son, Albert Jr., at his side, as he has been for the last seven years.

He was born on Nov. 8, 1912, the son of Peter and Theresa (Cagnoni) Sebastian in Brooklyn.

He was married to Louise Giannone on July 5, 1936, in New York City. She predeceased him on April 25, 1997.

A professional boxer in his early years, he retired at his loving wife's request and went into the medical appliance industry. After his retirement and moving to their home on Brownell Road in Bloomville, he enjoyed hunting and target shooting especially when it involved his wife's pots, pans and dishes.

He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law of Brownell Road, Bloomville, Peter and Ann Sebastian and Albert Jr. and Lynne Sebastian; and his daughter, Rosemary and her husband, Sol Semaza, of New Jersey. A sister, Tessie Rossi, who is 102 of Florida; five grandchildren, Dominick, Louis, Elon, Doron and Shannon; and six great-grandchildren, Meaghan, Marcy, Nikki, Brittany, Ryan and Branden, also survive him.

A son, Louis Sebastian predeceased him in 1967, in Vietnam; two brothers, Romeo and Charlie; and three sisters, Pina, Lena and Jeanie all predeceased him as well.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Anthony Ligato, celebrant, at Sacred Heart Church in Stamford. Burial will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery in Bloomville.

Calling hours will be on Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Bloomville Emergency Squad or the Bloomville Fire Department.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.

James T. Sherwood

WALTON — James T. Sherwood, 85, of Walton, passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, in The Hospital Nursing Care Facility, Sidney, after a long illness.

Mr. Sherwood was born in Walton, on June 30, 1918, the son of James Tyler and Ethel Davis Sherwood.

He was a graduate of Walton Central School and Albany State College. He taught Latin and English in Walton Central School for 25 years, retiring in 1973.

Mr. Sherwood was a member of the National Guard. He was also a member of the Walton Central School Board of Education, and a former trustee of the Wm. Ogden Library. He sang in a barbershop quartet and was a former member of the Delaware County Men's Choir.

After his retirement he traveled extensively throughout Europe.

He is survived by two cousins, Henrietta Davis Booth of Mount Upton and Alberta Davis of Bainbridge.

He was predeceased by his mother, father and a brother, Paul.

In keeping with Mr. Sherwood's wishes there will be no calling hours or services.

Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Sherwood's memory may be made to Walton Central School, Dollars for Scholars, Attention: Robbie Rice, Stockton Avenue, Walton. Memorial contribution envelopes are available from the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton.

Cathleen M. Baker

KINGSTON — Cathleen M. Baker, 92, of Kingston, formerly of Lake Katrine, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at the Golden Hill Health Care Center, Kingston.

She was born Jan. 29, 1911, in New York City.

She lived most of her adult life in Ardsley, and prior to moving to Lake Katrine, she lived for 10 years in Mount Vision, and in Rockledge, Fla., for several years.

She was a graduate of Hunter College in New York City. Following her graduation from Hunter College, she worked as an executive assistant in New York City.

She was active in committee work and activities, and the choir at Ardsley Methodist Church. She was also involved in other community activities such as the Girl Scouts of America, the American Heart Association, and the Garden Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Merriam Boening of Hurley, and Judith Dimmick of Anderson, S.C.; one son, Dr. Paul B. Baker of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Victor J. Dietz of Ada, Mich.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Victor B. and Jennie M. Fisher Dietz; her husband, Paul E. Baker, who died June 4, 1986; and her sister, Jean Purdy.

A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Keyser & Hamilton Funeral Service, 326 Albany Ave., Kingston, with the Rev. Wynemah Hinlicky officiating.

Interment will be at the discretion of the family.

Cecelia A. Morse

DEPOSIT — Cecelia A. Morse, 84, of Deposit, and formerly of Margaretville, passed away Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.

She was born Aug. 6, 1918, Haynes Hollow Road, Dry Brook, the daughter of Mannie and McCann and Bessie Dougherty.

Cecelia married Ralph G. Morse on Dec. 20, 1957, in Roxbury. He died June 19, 1968.

She was a homemaker, and enjoyed making plastic canvas crafts.

She was also a foster grandparent at the Deposit Central School.

Cecelia is survived by three daughters, Debra Katalinas, Mount Upton, Brenda Morse, Hancock, and Sandra Fisher, Hallstead, Pa.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five sisters, Lena Yourth, Mary Wright, Rose Goodchild, Lucy Sprague and Cora Davis; two brothers, William McCann and George McCann; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Roxbury, with the Rev. Joon Woo Lee officiating. Burial will be in Roxbury Methodist Cemetery in Roxbury.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Frank C. Pignatelli

COOPERSTOWN — Frank C. Pignatelli, 78, formerly of Oneonta and most recently of Cooperstown, passed away Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at his residence.

He was born July 15, 1925, in Oneonta, the son of Don Emedio and Lena (Kelly) Pignatelli. He was predeceased by his wife, Olive.

Frank served in the US Army during World War II and Korea, and was discharged as a Corporal.

He was a member of VFW Post 7128, Cooperstown, and American Legion Post 259, Oneonta.

He is survived by nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor of St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, officiating. Friends may call Thursday prior to the funeral service.

Burial with military honors will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Lucy Cronk

ROXBURY — Lucy Cronk, 95, of Roxbury, passed away Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at the Countryside Care Center in Delhi, she was a resident since April 25, 2001.

She was born March 19, 1908, in Fleischmanns, the daughter of John H. Bush and Elizabeth Shultis.

She was a housewife, and a resident of Roxbury and Roscoe.

Lucy is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Ackerley, Roscoe; one stepdaughter, Marion Gile, Roxbury; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Alonzo VanBramer; and her second husband, Raymond Cronk; and five brothers.

Calling hour is from 1 p.m. until funeral service time at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating. Burial will be in Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Helen Rider

DELHI — Helen Rider, 89, a longtime Delhi resident and Delaware County native, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

One of 11 children of Arthur and Iva (Mayes) Bouton, she was born April 11, 1914, in Bovina, received her education at Delaware Academy, and married Carl Rider on Feb. 11, 1934, in Delhi, a union of 52 years, until his death, Nov. 28, 1986.

A homemaker, Helen spent most of her life in Delhi where, for many years, she assisted her husband in the operation of his plumbing business, until retirement.

Helen's Christian faith defined her, and she was an active member of the Delhi Community Church where she served as Sunday School secretary and prepared communion.

Surviving are three daughters, Lois (James) Newkerk, De Lancey, Sally (Timothy) Eldred, Antioch, Tenn., and Marilyn (Michael) Weaver, Delhi; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; twin sisters, Irene Rider and Pauline Burrows, both of "Hearthstone," Hobart; a brother, Raymond "Roy" Bouton, Massapequa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by seven siblings, Mildred Hurlbutt, Mabel Dorn, Dorothy Thompson, Leah Condon, Floyd, Paul and Arthur Bouton.

Friends are invited to call 7 to 9 p.m. this evening (Thursday), Aug. 7, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance, and funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, at the Delhi Community Church, with the Rev. Paul Meisel, officiating. Private burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to the Delhi Community Church will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Frederick Baker

HARTWICK — Frederick Thomas Baker, 73, a longtime resident of Hartwick, died early Sunday morning, Aug. 3, 2003, at University Hospital in Syracuse.

Fred was born on April 11, 1930, in Hartwick, a son of Walter and Eliza J. (Richards) Baker.

A graduate of Hartwick High School, Fred first served for several years in the United States Army, and later re-enlisted in the United States Navy. His naval career went on to span 24 years, during which time he saw action in Vietnam, causing him to receive the Combat Action Ribbon as well as other medals and commendations. He was last stationed aboard the USS Aylwin, retiring from the US Navy as a Machinists Mate First Class in June of 1976.

Upon his return to Hartwick, he led a simple, quiet life. He frequently ate lunch at The Quickway in Hartwick, and he will always be remembered there and elsewhere for his friendly greetings and his habit of telling everyone he met to "have a good day."

He is survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon, Aug. 11, 2003, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Laverne Saxer, pastor of the Hartwick Christian Church, officiating.

The committal service and burial, with military funeral honors accorded by a contingent of United States Navy personnel, will follow in the Hartwick Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday afternoon from 1 p.m. until service time.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Hartwick Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 208, Hartwick, NY 13348.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Margaret Cannon

ONEONTA — Margaret V. Cannon, 80, died Aug. 5, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Margaret worked for many years as a waitress in several Oneonta cafes and restaurants.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Cannon; children, James Cannon, Janice Kirk, Michael Cannon, Kathy Baker and Paula Cannon, all of Oneonta, and Terry Cannon of Sidney; brother, Ralph Welsey; and sisters, Clara and Dorothy; and several grandchildren.

A memorial service for Margaret will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert F. Haskell, pastor of St. James Episcopal Church, officiating.

Burial will be later at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Gladys Friedman

MARGARETVILLE — Gladys Friedman, 84, of Margaretville, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.

She was born on June 25, 1919, the daughter of Patsy Dignal and Mary Elmer in Sandy Lake, Pa.

She was married to Harold Friedman. She was a loving mother and homemaker.

Mrs. Friedman is survived by one son, Henry Friedman, Margaretville; three daughters, Deborah Fairbairn, Delanson, Barbara Dabritz, Margaretville, and Ruthmary Friedman; three grandchildren, Seth and Emily Friedman, and Christopher Dabritz; and two brothers, Grant and Harry Dignal, Greenville, Pa.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Friedman, in 1960; five brothers; and one sister.

In keeping with her wishes a graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at the Margaretville Cemetery Annex, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh, officiating.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Kirkside Adult Home, Roxbury, or to Hospice of Delhi.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Joseph E. Reese

SYRACUSE — Joseph E. Reese, 95, formerly of Syracuse, went to be with his Lord, following a period of declining health.

He retired from sales. He was an Army Combat Veteran of World War II, serving in Europe until 1945.

He was an avid golfer and member of Arrowhead Country Club. He was a faithful fan of all S.U. sports.

He was a communicant of St. Daniel Church.

He will be remembered as a Gentleman.

He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Katherine, in 1998; and his brothers, Harry and Vincent, both of New York City.

Mr. Reese is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Linda Reese of New Berlin; many nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Gang Memorial Chapel, Syracuse. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Calling hours are Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home, 104 Fordham Road at Teall Avenue.

Memorial services will be held at St. Theresa's Church in New Berlin at a later date.

Robert E. Wells

CANAJOHARIE — Robert E. Wells, 90, of Otsego Street, Canajoharie, died Aug. 3, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, following a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 26, 1912, in West Hampton, the son of Earl Wells and Mabel Wolfen Wells.

He married Agnes M. Small on July 11, 1942, in Smithport, Pa. She predeceased him on Dec. 15, 2000.

Mr. Wells was employed at Beech-Nut Nutrition Company for many years. He retired in 1974.

He lived in Canajoharie for most of his life.

Mr. Wells served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was of the Protestant faith. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting.

Mr. Wells is survived by two daughters, Susan Terns of Cobleskill and Jeanine Sohn of Long Island; three sons, Roland Wells of Schenectady, Donald Wells of Simi Valley, Calif., and Robert L. Wells of Canajoharie; 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

An 11 a.m. funeral service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., in Canajoharie, with the Rev. Joyce Jennings officiating. Burial will be in the Canajoharie Falls Cemetery. The family received friends and relatives from 6 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at the funeral home.
