Clara M. Burst
SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Mrs. Clara M. Pierce Burst, 85, of Springfield Center passed away Sunday, May 4, 2003, at her home surrounded by family and friends.
She was born April 13, 1918, in Hamilton, the daughter of Wilfred L. and Maude M. (Richardson) Pierce.
On Sept. 18, 1943, she married Glenn W. Burst. He predeceased her in 2001.
She was a graduate of Richfield Springs Central School and did a year of post graduate work there before going to work at the Richfield Bank. She was also employed at the Allied Chemical Stone Quarry in Springfield and later by Otsego County Motor Vehicle Department and County Treasurers Office. She retired from the Treasurers Office after 18 years in 1983.
Clara was active in the community and church all her life. She belonged to the Richfield Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir and later went to the East Springfield Presbyterian Church where she served as treasurer.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Warren Grange, the Cornell Extension Service Home Bureau, the Springfield PTA, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Springfield Fire Department Auxiliary, and the Springfield Historical Society. She was also the Springfield School District Treasurer and Girl Scout Leader.
She is survived by a son, James W. Burst of Springfield; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marjorie J. Bliss and Jim, of Poughkeepsie, and Jeanette M. Dorn and Dennis, of Springfield; grandchildren, Brent Ecton, Emily Armstrong, Katie Dorn, Ryan, Kendra and Ethan Burst; a niece, Bonnie Woods; nephew, Bruce Pierce; and numerous great-grandchildren; and great-nieces and -nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Esther.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, East Springfield, with the Rev. Susan Burdsall officiating, followed by a luncheon at the church. Burial in the Springfield Center Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Marie D. Reagan
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Marie D. Reagan, 88, of Cooperstown died early Sunday morning, May 4, 2003, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
She was born on Feb. 9, 1915, in Yonkers, a daughter of Michael and Leonora (Mullane) McNally.
She was married to her beloved husband, Harold F. Reagan, on Aug. 24, 1949, in Yonkers. Mr. Reagan died on Oct. 6, 1989.
Mrs. Reagan was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers. She then graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting and a Masters Degree in Education. Mrs. Reagan was named Woman Athlete Of The Year during her senior year.
For many years Mrs. Reagan served as Supervisor of the Employment Department for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City. She later taught at the Commerce High School in Yonkers.
The Reagans had lived in Yonkers, Hastings and Dobbs Ferry, before retiring to their farm in Bovina Center. They had been residents of Cooperstown since 1977.
Mrs. Reagan was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church where she taught in the religious education program for several years. She served as a Eucharistic minister at Bassett Hospital, as well as other volunteer services at the hospital, most recently with the Healthy Heart Program. She was also a member of the New York State Historical Association, the Women's Club of Cooperstown, the Bassett Hospital Auxiliary, the New York State Teacher's Association, and the Friends of the Village Library.
Surviving are two nieces, Nancy Martin of Mount Vernon, and Abigail Whitlock of Buffalo; six nephews, Michael and Stephen McNally of Jacksonville, Fla., John McNally of Easton, Md., Thomas McNally of Decatur, Ga., Patrick McNally of Waycross, Ga., and Patrick Reagan of Yonkers; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lois McNally of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several cousins.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Thomas F., William J., and Joseph J. McNally.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. John R. Roos, retired pastor, assisting.
Burial will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, in St. Mary's Cemetery in Yonkers.
There will be no calling hours.

Merle G. Croft
HARTWICK — Merle G. Croft, 87, of Hartwick died early Tuesday morning, May 6, 2003, at The Meadows.
He was born May 17, 1915, in Utica, a son of Merle R. and Mabel (Allen) Croft.
He married Edith Marie Thrasher on May 18, 1946, in Utica.
Merle grew up in Utica where he attended school and in the mid-1930s served for four years in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He later enlisted in the National Guard and proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the Asiatic and Pacific Theatres of Operations. Upon his honorable discharge he received numerous medals and citations, including the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Silver Star.
Following the war he returned to Utica and in 1955, he and his wife purchased a house in Hartwick and over the years built a home and raised a happy family.
For over 20 years Merle was employed as a Union Carpenter for the former Utica Local No. 120, now No. 747. Following his retirement he continued to work locally for various contractors.
He was a former member of the Hartwick American Legion Post No. 1567. He especially enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and golf, and had a special love for animals. He will be greatly missed by his loving family.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Edith, of Hartwick; a daughter, Barbara Croft of North Bennington, Vt.; three sons, Robert M. Croft of Hartwick, Richard D. Croft of Denton, Texas, and Dwayne T. Croft of New York City; three grandsons; three granddaughters; a twin brother, Robert A. Croft of Hartwick; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his three sisters, Hilda, Muriel and Margaret.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2003, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John R. Roos, retired pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Hartwick Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 and the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579, Cooperstown.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening, May 9, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. when Merle's family will be in attendance.

Joan Marie Sparling
WALTON — Joan Marie Sparling, a longtime Walton resident, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at her home surrounded by her family. She was 65.
Mrs. Sparling worked as an assembler at Amphenol in Sidney, where she was a member of Local 1529 of Machinist Union IAM & AW.
Mrs. Sparling was born Jan. 28, 1938, in Walton, to Charles and Grace Carlson DuMond.
She graduated from Walton High School. On June 13, 1957, she married Jack Sparling in Jessup, Ga., who survives. Mrs. Sparling has lived in Walton for the past 14 years. Prior to that she lived in Stuart, Fla., from 1976 to 1989.
She was devoted to her husband of 45 years and was a very loving mother and grandmother who lived for her grandchildren and always looked forward to their visits. She also enjoyed going to her daughter's buffalo farm. She was a very nurturing person who could bring a wilted plant back to life.
Joan Sparling is survived by her husband, Jack, of Walton; daughters, Lynn Tweedie, Bonnie Sparling and Kelly Black, all of Walton; brothers, Charles (Rose) DuMond of South Carolina, Donald (Eleanor) DuMond of Trout Creek, and Dick (Joann) DuMond of Walton; grandchildren, April Morgan, Alisha Sparling, Natasha Mason, Eric Black, Jacqueline Black, Sean Mason, Lisa Black, Cody Tweedie and Shane Tweedie; and a great-grandson, Collin Sparling. Also surviving is one aunt, Betty Carlson of Trout Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Carroll Cemetery, Trout Creek, Saturday, May 10, 2003, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Paul Cronin officiating.
Contributions to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in the name of Joan M. Sparling would be appreciated.

Douglas M. Holmes
RICHMONDVILLE — Mr. Douglas M. Holmes, 59, of Main Street, Richmondville, passed away Friday, May 2, 2003, at the Samuel Stratton Veterans' Administration Medical Center in Albany.
He was born Dec. 11, 1943, in Cobleskill, the son of Muriel (Kniskern) Holmes and the late Charles Holmes of Lawyersville.
For more than 20 years he was employed at the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill, working in the maintenance department. Having to retire due to a disability, he continued as a volunteer at the hospital.
Mr. Holmes was a United States Air Force veteran and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 5088 of Cobleskill, serving as a past commander, the Fred L. Stilson American Legion Post 57, and the AmVets.
He was a graduate of the former Cobleskill Central School. He was a member of the Zion St. John's Lutheran Church in Seward.
He lived in Richmondville for five years.
Mr. Holmes is survived by his loving wife, Judith (Lovejoy) Holmes, whom he married Feb. 21, 1992; a daughter, Lisa Ann Greene of Lakeside, Conn.; son, Charles R. Holmes of Richmondville; his mother, Muriel (Kniskern) Holmes, of Lawyersville; a stepdaughter, Peggy Ann Spear of South Glens Falls; a stepson, James L. Holmes of Clinton, Conn.; a brother, Russell Holmes of Lawyersville; five grandchildren, Zach, Danielle, Faith, Rene and Morgan, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, with a military service to be held at 5:45 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. There will be a gathering to follow at the VFW Post No. 5088 in Cobleskill.
Burial will be private at the family's convenience.

Ruth Anne Walley
NORTH CAROLINA — Ruth Anne Walley of North Carolina, formerly of Franklin/Shinnhopple, passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2003, She was 39.
Ruth was born to Edward and Rose (Stilson) Walley on April 13, 1964, in Walton.
She attended Franklin Central School where she made many friends. She worked at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center from 1982 to 1997. She attended Fox Nursing Program in Oneonta and received her LPN during this time.
Ruth moved to North Carolina in 1997, and began training for her RN, where she worked privately for two clients.
Ruth loved spending time with her family and friends. Ruth also loved animals and motorcycles.
Ruth was predeceased by her father, Edward Walley in 1996.
She leaves behind her love of 17 years, Owen Kelly; three daughters, Samantha Walley of Worcester, Rachael Kelly and Aileach Kelly of North Carolina; her mother, Rose Stilson of Oneonta; four brothers and their wives, Edward and Nancy Walley of Delhi, Dennis and Jerri Walley of Ohio, Richard and Linda Walley of Corbet and Phillip and Barbara Walley of Franklin; one sister and her husband, Darlene and Raymond Barriger of Sidney Center; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral to be held in North Carolina; and a memorial service for friends and family to be held in New York at a later date.
Ruth C. Danielson
MORRIS — Ruth C. (Clarkson) Danielson, 101, of Lakewood, Colo., and formerly of Morris, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at the Villa Manor Care Center in Lakewood, Colo.
She was born May 1, 1902, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of Henry J. Clarkson and Carrie S. (Pendell) Clarkson.
She married the Rev. Henning E. Danielson on Oct. 23, 1923, in Worcester, Mass. She and her husband served the First Baptist Church of Morris from 1931 to 1944. And other churches until their retirement at which time they returned to Morris and lived here for 10 years. He passed away in 1983.
She is survived by her children, Evelyn Reynolds of Lakewood, Colo., the Rev. Gordon W. Danielson of Jensen Beach, Fla., the Rev. P. Paul Danielson of Weirton, W.Va.; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A son, Stanley Danielson predeceased her.
Memorial funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Morris. Committal services and burial will follow in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to contribute to the First Baptist Church of Morris in her memory.
Local arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
Frederick M. Lee
UNADILLA — Frederick M. Lee, 66, of Unadilla died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, in Andes.
Mr. Lee was born on Oct. 14, 1936, in Tilly Foster, to Theodore R. and Katherine (Eaton) Lee.
Mr. Lee married Helen Moore on Nov. 4, 1955, in North Salem.
Mr. Lee was a man of many trades as well as a member of the Doodly Bug Club in Franklin, and the Reinbeck Antique Club in Reinbeck. Mr. Lee had lived in Patterson, for most of his life before moving to Unadilla, four years ago.
Mr. Lee is survived by three sons, Theodore Lee of Unadilla, Tony Lee of Wappingers Falls, and Chester Lee of Sidney; two daughters, Bonnie Jean Lee of Unadilla, and Gail Hyatt of Patterson; a sister-in-law, Muriel Lee of Amenia; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Frederick Lee on June 10, 1964.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 9, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Dwyer Funeral Home, 23 South St., Patterson.
Interment Raymond Hill Cemetery, Carmel.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

ONEONTA — Graveside committal services for Pauline H. Hough will be held on Friday, May 9, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Judy Thistle presiding. Ms. Hough died on Nov. 4, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.
