Herman Reed 'Hermdog' West

Herman Reed West "Hermdog," age 50, died Sept. 26, 2003, at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital of a long illness.

Herman was born July 24, 1953, near Pineville, Ky., moved in 1958 to Colorado, then to Nevada in 1988.

Herman leaves behind wife, Donna M. West; son, Terence Reed West; and daughter, Danae Marie West.

He was a strong, hard-working man dedicated to his family. He will be greatly missed.

Memorial services will be held in Colorado.

No flowers - donations to Friends for Life or The Tree of Life at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital are suggested.

Doris Sheppard

Doris Sheppard passed on late in the morning of Oct. 6, 2003. Doris Ruby McCoy was the first of four children born to Melvin Street McCoy and Mabel Lucille (Pearce) McCoy in Battle Mountain, Nev., on Dec. 29, 1928. Doris first attended Bushee Elementary School at the Pearce Ranch, then Winnemucca Grammar School, graduating from Humboldt County High School in 1946.

She met "Red" Sheppard in 1945 and they were married by Justice of the Peace John Fransway Sept. 17, 1946, at the home of her parents. Their life together started off as it remained through all their years together. Without fanfare or ceremony they went from the wedding to work in the hayfield. They ranched and farmed in Buena Vista Valley, Midas, Lovelock and Oreana until the mid-50s when they moved to Winnemucca. Red worked for a time in mining and construction until they started the family construction and development business that is still in operation today.

The first of six children, all born in Winnemucca, arrived in July of 1947 and the family was complete by January of 1957. Life was busy and full of challenge, but this was her aspiration. Short in stature, Dori was larger than life to her family and the community she loved. Dori was loved, respected and admired by everyone for her kindness, creativity, strength and the ease with which she was able to accomplish so much without ever seeming hurried or harried.

For the last 25 years Dori spent as many hours as she could quilting. The sheer volume of her work is exceeded only by the beauty and natural creativity of her expressions in the art of her work. She loved to share the love of quilting as her two daughters and the "The Crazy Quilters" will surely attest. No doubt God has special work for her.

Dori is survived by her husband of 57 years, T. G. "Red" Sheppard; sons, Michael (Michelle), Charlie and Tom; daughters, Paddy (John) Legarza, Cheri Maynick; mother, Mabel McCoy; grandchildren, Zachary and Clay Sheppard, Abby Sheppard, Jennifer and Jeffrey Maynick, Frank, Cody and Jesse Legarza; brothers, Joseph "Bud" McCoy, Milton McCoy, Stanley McCoy; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin McCoy; son, Terry Lee Sheppard; mother- and father-in-law, O.L. and Bessie Sheppard.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct.11, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center on McArthur Avenue. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Interment to follow services at the Winnemucca Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations suggested to Humboldt Volunteer Hospice, P.O. Box 843, Winnemucca, NV, 89445.

Albertson Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.
