Private family services have been held for Ruth Elizabeth Diethert, 87, who died May 26 in Las Vegas.
She was born June 24, 1913, in Silver City, N.M.
She worked in a credit office before retiring and belonged to SKP and AARP.
She enjoyed traveling in her RV, gardening, solving crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and playing cards.
She was a Christian. Diethert came to Pahrump from Verda Valley, Ariz., in 1988.
Sons Richard (Jean) of Stillwater, Minn., Thomas (Ann) of Bloomington, Minn., foster son Heinrich (Linda) Fettig of Anselmo, Neb., daughter Patricia Moore of Lebanon, Ore., sister Sue Montieth of Sun City West, Ariz., 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren survive her. (5/26/01)
Doris Winnor
Private family services have been held for Doris Anita Winnor, 68, who died May 27 in Pahrump.
She was born March 26, 1933, in Santa Barbara, Calif.
She worked as a letter carrier for the postal service, enjoyed crossword puzzles and antiques, and was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
She came to Pahrump from Orange County, Calif., in 1996.
Son Brian of Pahrump, daughter Joanne Toledo of Pahrump, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive her. (5/27/01)
Carl Johnson
Celebration of life services for Carl Ray Johnson, 57, who died June 4 in Las Vegas, were held Tuesday in the Neptune Society of Nye County chapel.
He was born April 18, 1944, in Peoria, Ill.
He served in the U.S. Army, then had a career as a truck driver.
He came to Pahrump from Illinois in 1990.
His mother, Viola Bader of Pekin, Ill., sons Robert of Pahrump and Kacey of Streator, Ill., daughters Renee Jenkins of Streator, Cari of Peoria and Naomi Gardner of Pekin, sister Marilyn Turner of Pekin and four grandchildren survive him. (6/4/01)
Luella Babbitt
Graveside services for Luella Evalyn Babbitt, 91, who died June 26 in Amargosa Valley, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Amargosa Desert cemetery.
She was born May 1, 1910, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
She earned a master's degree in education, specializing in sounds and phonics, and taught math, science, reading and music for 56 years.
She lived in Tecopa, Calif., since 1975, and moved to Amargosa Valley in 1988.
She was a Christian and belonged to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
She served on the board of directors for the senior center.
Sons Lyle of Vine Grove, Ky., and Arthur of Amargosa, 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild survive her.
Sons James and Laurence preceded her in death. (6/26/01)
Geneva Champlin
Mass of Christian burial for Geneva J. Champlin, 75, who died June 27 in Pahrump, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church.
Burial will follow in Palm Eastern cemetery.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today in the Pahrump Family Mortuary chapel.
She was born Nov. 30, 1925, in Liebenthal, Kan.
She worked as a bookkeeper before retiring four years ago and moving to Pahrump from Las Vegas, belonged to the Catholic Church and was a member of Daughters of Mary and TOPS.
Son Wayne (Marilyn) of Pahrump, daughters Rosalind (Ollie) Franks of Biloxi, Miss., and Pauline (Randy) Stout) of Anortas, Wash., sisters Ceclia Sanders of LaCrosse, Wis., Mary Barnes of McCracken, Kan. Stella Miller of Newton, Kan., and Isabelle Schuckman of LaCrosse, 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren survive her.
Melvin, her husband of 42 years, preceded her in death. (7/27/01)
Jay Hall
Jay H. Hall, 75, died June 26 in a Las Vegas hospital.
He was born Feb. 28, 1925, in Oklahoma City.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, then worked as a machinist in the aerospace industry before retiring.
He was a 10-year resident of Pahrump.
Wife Jean of Pahrump, stepdaughter Nancy Aust of Vancouver, Wash., stepson Gary Hughes of Riverside, Calif., four grandchildren and five great--grandchildren survive him. (6/26/01)
David St. John
A memorial service for David Raymond St. John, 80, who died July 10 in Pahrump, will be held at 6 p.m. Monday in the Neptune Society Chapel, 720 Buol Lane.
He was born Feb. 14, 1921, in Tulsa.
He worked as an electrician at the Nevada Test Site and belonged to the electrician's union.
He moved to Nevada in 1958, and had been a resident of Crystal since 1972.
Son David of Tulsa, brother Frederick of Dawsonville, Ga., and sister Beverly Jones of Crystal survive him.
Neptune Society of Nye County handled the arrangements. (7/10/01)
Chuck Gallivan
Long-time Pahrump resident Charles "Chuck" Gallivan, 66, died March 23, 2000 in Las Vegas.
In lieu of a service, an open house was held in Pahrump on March 26, as per his wishes.
He was born Dec. 25, 1933, in Sommerville, Mass.
He served in the U.S. Air Force.
He came to Pahrump from Southern California 26 years ago and operated a printing business for a number of years.
He served as president of the Pahrump Valley Museum and Historical Society, and was a member of Moose Lodge 808.
He was known for his writing on ghost towns as well as his photography.
Gallivan ran for the county commission in 1990.
He is survived by his wife, Marilynn of Pahrump; two sons, Stephen and David, both of California; a sister, Frances of Braintree, Mass.; a brother, Leo of Higham, Mass.; and three granddaughters.
His father, Norman, and his mother, Dorothy McLaughlin Gallivan, preceded him in death.
James Chandler
Date of death: April 21, 2000
A memorial service for James R. Chandler, 57, who died April 21 in Pahrump, will be held at a later date in the Pahrump Family Mortuary chapel.
He was born June 17, 1942 in Paris, Ark.
He worked for the BLM and came to Pahrump 13 years ago from Stockton, Calif.
He belonged to the Lutheran Church.
His parents, Dorothy Selzkorn of Pahrump and Paul Chandler of Stockton; two brothers, James of Stockton and Darrell of Pahrump; and a sister, Dianne Lisenby of Liberal, Kan. survive him.
A brother, David, preceded him in death.
Fred Williams
Date of death: April 11, 2000
A memorial service for Fred Williams, 59, who died April 11 in Las Vegas, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Evangelical Free Church, Reno, with Pastor Ralph Carleton officiating.
Fred Williams was born Dec. 27, 1940 in Eaton Township, Pa.
He served two tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Marine Corps, and was a retired deputy with the Reno Police Dept.
He came to Pahrump from Reno two years ago.
He is survived by his mother, Lucy Williams of Factoryville, Pa.; significant other Andra Braden and their 4-year-old daughter Kali; two brothers, Roger of Factoryville and Carl of Juneau, Alaska; and three sisters, Dorothy Williams-Sorensen of Factoryville, Alice Novembrino of Burlington, Vt., and Sarah of Fairbanks, Alaska.
In lieu of flowers, donations for Kali's education can be made through Bank of America account No. 000140261215.
Phil Vavra
Private services have been held for Phil E. Vavra, 69, who died April 20, 2000.
He was born May 28, 1930 in Hollywood, Calif. He worked as a machinist for EG&G before he retired, and he was a resident of Nevada since 1957.
He is survived by his wife, Joleen of Pahrump; a brother, George of Albuquerque; and uncles, a nephew and niece.
