Dr. Angelo Meloro
Services for Dr. Angelo Anthony Meloro, 85, who died Nov. 25, 2006, in Amarillo, Texas, will be held at 2 p.m. today at Brooks Chapel in Canyon, Texas, with MSGR Rex Nicholls, Our Lady of Guadalupe, officiating.
He was born in Binghamton, N.Y., to Lorenzo Meloro and Filomena Deabbiero Meloro. He was a 13-year resident of Pahrump and a recent resident of Amarillo.
Angelo lived a colorful life. As a young man, he played the trumpet in a circus band.
After completing college and medical school, he began a lengthy and diverse medical practice that spanned over a half a century. His medical expertise ranged from medical, surgical and obstetrical to general practice. He served as a staff physician in the State Corrections medical services at the Santa Fe Penitentiary.
One of the many highlights of his career as a physician was in February 1958, when he was transported by a Sherman tank during a blizzard to the farmhouse of one of his patients in Waterford, Pa. The patient, in labor and about to deliver her sixth child, was unable to get to the hospital due to the blizzard. The miracle of the story is that the article was reported in the town where the brother of the baby's father lived. The two brothers had been separated during the communist invasion of their country and had lost all contact with each other until the brother read the article and sought out his long-lost sibling to congratulate him on the birth.
In June 2004, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine honored him for 55 years of meritorious service to the osteopathic profession. In addition to being a physician, he was elected mayor of Socorro, N.M., and served for four years.
Meloro also had the good fortune to visit his parents' homeland of Italy and attended a Mass given by Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo. After Mass, Padre Pio passed Angelo as he was standing in the corridor. Padre Pio walked to the end of the corridor, turned around and walked back, only to stop in front of Angelo. Padre Pio slapped Angelo on his left cheek, then the right, and walked away. Angelo was puzzled until his friend told him he had "just been blessed by Padre Pio."
His parents, brothers Anthony and Danny and his sister Lucy Anna Meloro-Post preceded him in death.
His wife of 13 years Peggy of Canyon, Texas and his daughter Angela Roybal of Albuquerque, N.M., a registered nurse, survive him.
His family would like to thank Odyssey Hospice in Amarillo, Dr. Tracy Rausch of Amarillo and Nathan Adelson Hospice of Pahrump.
