Mario Carlos Sánchez, 26, of Questa, NM passed away on September 9, 2006. He was born on June 28, 1980 to Andamo and Linda Sánchez. He attended school at Questa Jr. Sr. High School. On August 21, 1999 he married
Rebecca Muniz. His dream was always to drive semi trucks. He was very knowledgeable in mechanics; he worked in the Questa area and also worked in the oilfields of Wyoming. There was not anything Mario could not do. He was a very good spirited person and lived life to its fullest. He enjoyed spending time and laughing with his family and friends. He enjoyed the outdoors always attending mud bogs, snowmobiling, camping, hunting, fishing, and driving semi trucks. He was preceded in death by his Grandmother Gaydeen Sánchez-Spiller, Great Grandparents' Benito & Claudina Sánchez. In addition to his parents and wife he is survived by his two children Brittany Sánchez, and Mario Sánchez Jr., his brothers; Andamo Jr.(Jamie), Marcus (Angelique), sisters; Jennifer (Dominic), and Nichole Sánchez, Nephews; Isaiah, Justin, niece; Alicia, his grandparents; Marcello and Rachel Vialpando, Jerry Sánchez, his Great- Grandmother; Oralia Jiron, several Uncles, Aunts, and cousins. Wallace Dayton Chatwin, 80, a resident of Bosque Farms, NM since 1997 and formerly of Taos died Saturday, September 16, 2006. He is survived by his spouse of 57 years, Nora; children, Susan and husband Stephen Peterson, Lynn and wife Joni Chatwin, Carolyn and husband Rich Murset, Lorraine and husband Dave Reschke, Kevin and wife Shannon Chatwin, Sherri and husband Jeff Thayne; 27 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister Gloria and brother Gordon. Before moving to Bosque Farms, Wally was a longtime resident of Taos, NM where he was a building contractor. Wally was a respected member of his community and well known for his humor and outgoing personality. He was an active member of his church. Albert Pacheco, 45, also known as “Frito little people, Abbey.” Beloved son, brother, uncle and friend was called home to be with the Lord on Aug.. 25, 2006. Albert was kind to everyone and was always willing to lend a hand. Michael P. Salazar, 50, Ranchos de Taos passed away Sept. 2, 2006 at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Santa Fe, NM. He was born to Jose and Margarita Salazar on August 13, 1956. His partner in life was Susan Martínez His hobbies included Carving, Football, Sports and Working on his truck. Dr. Leo Dow Bradley died on September 3rd, 2006 at 2:10 am. Dr. Bradley was born on May 21, 1927 in Holiday, Texas to Leo Bradley, Sr. and Gladys Ruth. The family moved to Athens a few years later and he graduated from Athens High School. He entered World War II late serving in the Coast Guard for 2 years. Leo was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. He served on the faculty of Criswell College until retirement. He earned 2 degrees from Texas A&M and received his PhD in Education from the University of Houston. He taught every grade level from elementary to college during his career. Over the years, he served as Principal of Longfellow Elementary School and Beaumont High School, Assistant Superintendent in Corpus Christi, and Superintendent in Grand Prairie and Spring Branch. Upon his retirement, Dr. Bradley and his wife relocated to Taos, New Mexico and built a home. He went to work, at no charge, in his son-in-law and daughter's business teaching emergency response. Dr. Bradley and his wife dedicated their last years to helping their children and grandchildren realize their dreams. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Burgess, and his youngest daughter, Ellen Ruth Dyke. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mary Ellen of Taos, New Mexico; his two daughters Dowann Oskins of Taos, New Mexico and Gladys May Shelley of Dallas, Texas; and his son, John Martin Bradley of Corpus Christi, Texas. He has four grandchildren: Jacqueline, Michael, John Dell (JD), and Veronica. Kathleen E. Harness, 90, formerly of Taos passed away on September 5, 2006 in San Diego, California. A devoted wife and mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, and three sons, Michael, Stephen and Robert Harness. She was a resident of Taos for many years where her son was an instructor at UNM. Kathleen is survived by her sister, Dorothy “Dottie” Gunther, and brother, Fred “Bud” Krueger, Jr., both of Denver, Colorado. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Khristine Gamer, and four great-grandchildren, Mikaela, Zoe, Lilith and Jamie Gamer of San Diego, California. A funeral mass was held at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Alpine, California. Interment was held at Mt. Olivet cemetery in Denver, Colorado. Kathleen enjoyed telling a good story nearly as much as she enjoyed listening to one. She will be missed. Merrill Mayhall Blevins, of Houston, TX, formerly of Taos, NM and Alexandria. VA, died on Sunday, Aug. 27. He was a decorated WWII hero, and served in the Foreign Service of the United States Department of State from 1947 to 1968. He retired from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome as Chief of Protocol after twelve active years. He was a licensed layreader at Christ Church, Alexandria, VA and played an important role in rehabilitating Mengo Hospital in Kampala, Uganda. Merrill, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, was the beloved husband of Susan. In addition to his wife, Merrill is survived by his two daughters, Karen Roden and her two sons, Stephen and Nathan of Douglasville, GA, and MaryAnne Becker and her husband, Michael of Houston, TX. Geraldine DeCoteau Harvey passed away on June 15, 2006, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, after having lived in Taos, New Mexico, for over 50 years. She was 17 days shy of her 90th birthday. Geraldine was born on July 2, 1916, in Wisconsin to a Chippewa Algonquin father and an Oneida Iroquois mother. Whereas she grew up at Manitowish Waters, she later attended boarding schools as a youngster, such as Odanah and Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota. She then became one of the first Native American women to graduate from college, first obtaining a Bachelors of Arts degree from Sioux Falls College, and subsequently a Master's Degree from the University of Wisconsin. In her professional life she taught elementary school, traveling to isolated regions of the United States- Menomenies (Wisconsin), Sioux (Montana), Oklahoma, Apaches, Sac and Fox, Cheyennes, and Pueblos (New Mexico)to work with Native American children. Her methods were ahead of her time, and she believed in fully immersing her students in the educational experience. Preceding retirement, she taught at Taos and in Tesuque, both communities with large Native American populations. Upon her retirement, a number of newspapers commented astutely that she would be "one tough act to follow." She is survived by her wellknown daughter, the flamenco dancer María Benítez, her son-in-law Cecilio Benítez, her grandson Francisco Benítez, her grand-daughterin- law, Anne Marcy- Benitez, and a large extended family including her first husband and father to her daughter, Josué E. Leopold “Leo” Arko Jr., 83, of Eagle Nest was called home by the Lord on December 20, 2006. Leo was born to Leopold and Marija “Mary” Arko on April 07, 1923 at the family home in the Moreno Valley, NM. In 1944 he joined the US Army and operated a tank in the European Theatre operations against the Nazi invasion of Europe. He returned to the US in 1945 and married
Lorene Stocker on July 26, 1945. In January 1952 he returned to the Moreno Valley to help his parents on the Arko Farm. He was employed by the State of NM Highway Department and Colfax County Road Department. He helped build and maintain roads throughout Colfax County but primarily in the Moreno Valley. Leo was part of the team starting the Eagle Nest Volunteer Fire Department. He assisted in installing the antenna and electric lines for the TV repeater line that serves the Moreno Valley. When Leo was a oungster, he and his family helped build St. Mel's Catholic Church in Eagle Nest (all volunteer labor). He was preceded in death by his parents, 12 siblings and a daughter, Janet Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorene Arko, children, Agnes Gibson (Scott), Anna Marie Pabst (Dennis), Ernie Arko (Barbara Lebeck), Michael Arko, William Arko, Leo Arko III (Barbara), Rita Butts (Mike), Nina Arko- Hay (Kenneth Rowlison) and David Arko (Doris). Juana Vivian Romero Naranjo, of Santa Fé, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 10, 2006. She is survived by one son, Gaspar M. Naranjo and wife Libby; one daughter, María E. Naranjo; one grandson, Reyes C. Naranjo and wife Maureen and one great-grand daughter, Megan E. Naranjo, “the light of her Nana’s life.” Additionally, she is survived by one sisterinlaw, Rose Romero of Wyoming. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Vivian was born on January 11, 1916 in Llano Quemado, Taos County, to Maximiano and Celina Graham Romero. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gaspar O. Naranjo, by one son, Jessie Naranjo and by nine brothers and sisters, Eleuto, Lisaida, Juan, Dora, Lupe, Polito, Amarante, Timoteo and Eloisa. Vivian attended public schools in Albuquerque and Taos. She attended Allison James Presbyterian Boarding School in Santa Fe from 1929 to 1936. On June 8, 1936, she married
Gaspar O. Naranjo of Chimayó. From 1936 to 1946 they lived in Chimayó and in Santa Fé intermittently and from 1946 until her death, Vivian lived in Santa Fé. From 1937 to 1941, Vivian worked in the Santa Fé County Assessor’s Office, together with her husband who was deputy assessor and her brother-in-law who was County Assessor. Together with her husband, Vivian owned and operated N & N Sales, a wholesale route through north central New Mexico and they owned and operated Naranjo’s Grocery store in Santa Fe for about 12 years. They also owned and managed rentals in Santa Fe on Staab, Water and West San Francisco Streets for about 45 years. Vivian was a member of a typically large Hispanic northern New Mexico family. She loved her family and relatives. She enjoyed her travels which took her to Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Washington D.C. and to most states. She was a life long member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and an active participant in La Sociedad Femenil of that church. She was a member of City of Santa Fe Senior Citizens and she was a member of The Plant Club. She will be dearly missed. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will begin on Friday, December 15, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. John United Methodist Church, on 1200 Old Pecos Trail in Santa Fé with a Memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Committal service will follow at 4:00 p.m. at the Fairview cemetery in Santa Fé. Scott was a pioneer in the computer field, as a computer programmer. His interests included music & traveling, and his passions were photography & spending time with his friends. Rosary was recited December 15 at the Rivera Chapel. Funeral mass was celebrated on December 16, 2006 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tres Piedras.
