Joseph “Joe” Edwin Ortiz, 62, of Albuquerque and formerly of Taos, was born in Embudo, NM on January 24, 1944 to E.B. & Ofelia Ortiz. Joe was the fourth son and the seventh of eight children. He was preceded in death by his parents and two nieces, Jane Ann Ortiz and Tammy Velasquez. He is survived by his two daughters, Jolene (Brandon) and Vanessa (Martin), his brothers, Orlando (Ruby), Art (Marilyn), Ted (Cecilia), and sisters, Sadie Knight, Lucille Olds (Wally), Margaret Werner (Bob), Anna Marie Velásquez and his special friends, Steve Sánchez and Tommy Velásquez, also know as his “bros”. Joe was a Taos High School graduate of 1962 and later graduated from the University of New Mexico. He loved the outdoors and worked for the forest service for a while. He enjoyed camping, hiking, and cutting firewood with his buddies. Joe was quiet but had a unique sense of humor. He was well liked by everyone young and old. Joe worked at the family business, Granada Furniture with his sister, Anna Marie. He became manager when she moved to Albuquerque, then in the year 2000 he moved to Albuquerque also. He was a loving father to both Jolene and Vanessa and was extremely proud of them. He enjoyed seeing family at the Ortiz reunion in August of 2006. He was happy to have Jolene and Vanessa beside him. Joe was loved and will be greatly missed. Rosary was recited on October 29, 2006. Funeral mass was held on October 30, 2006. Both services were held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Taos. Carlos Jesse Cisneros, 23, of El Prado passed away on October 19, 2006. He was a 2001 graduate of Taos High School and was employed at Super Saver Grocery. He is preceded in death by his Aunt, Eufemia “Fem” Cisneros. He is survived by his parents, Raymond and Adeline Cisneros, brother, Roman Matthew Cisneros and his fiancé, Christina Valdez, grandparents, Cristóbal and Clorinda Cisneros of El Prado and Harry and Nellie Coca of Cañon, uncles and aunts, Martin and Marjie Cisneros, Chris and Loretta Cisneros, Didi Cisneros and Jake Muniz, Benjie and Mary Montoya, Gloria and Delbert Barela, Edward Coca and Gary Stribling and numerous cousins, other relatives and many friends. Richard D. Tafoya, 45, of Costilla, NM. Ju1y 2 1961 October 9, 2006 preceded in death by grandparents Amarante & Anita Jácquez and Bernardo & Miquelita Tafoya, and also brother Nick Tafoya and sister Aurora Tafoya. He is survived by wife Bernadean Tafoya, children Richard Tafoya Jr; Jeremy Tafoya and Zachary Tafoya all of Denver, CO. Parents Eluterio & Tive Tafoya of Costilla, NM, 7 brothers and sisters Mickie (Lawrence) Lacombe of Taos, NM, Nick (Patsy) Tafoya of Taos, NM, Ernest (Olivia) Tafoya of Taos, NM, Anita (Tim) Drum of Albuquerque, NM, Susan (Phillip) Sánchez of Taos, NM, Bernie (Kathie) Tafoya of Taos, NM Amarante Tafoya of Albuquerque, NM, many nieces and nephews and numerous other relatives and friends. Eloy Eduardo Trujillo, 83, of Ranchos de Taos passed away on October 16, 2006. He is preceded in death by his wife, Bettye Trujillo, son, Eloy John Trujillo, sisters, Marcella and Rebecca and brother, Andy. He is survived by his children, Marie Ripere (Dan) of Albuquerque, Michael Trujillo of San José, CA, David Trujillo (Lalaine) of Santa Fe, Joseph Trujillo of Ranchos de Taos and Pete Trujillo of Santa Fé, sister, Trudy Tafoya of Ranchos de Taos, 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Rosary will be recited on Thursday, October 26, 2006 at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, October 27, 2006 at 10 a.m at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church with interment to follow at 1 p.m. at Santa Fe National cemetery. George L. Block, 88, died peacefully on October 16 of pancreatic cancer in Taos, New Mexico. He was born in Davenport, Iowa, on July 17, 1918 to Albert F. and Margaret Schlichter Block. A 1940 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he married Elizabeth Vogler in 1943. After a distinguished career, they retired to Angel Fire in 1970 and to Taos (Plaza de Retiro) in 2004. He served in World War II on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise and in the Korean War on the battleship U.S.S. New Jersey as gunnery officer, earning the Bronze Star. He later commanded two destroyers and an attack transport in the Atlantic fleet. He came to Albuquerque in 1966 as a Deputy Commander at the Defense Atomic Support Agency. He retired from the Navy in 1970 with 32 years active service. At Angel Fire, he served as president of the property owner's association and helped to establish the Angel Fire Sportsman's Club. He was an avid shooter and hunter. He was a Mason and also a life member of the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Elizabeth (Betsy), his son James C. Block and his wife Mary Ellen (Penny) of Mount Hermon, MA, his daughter Nancy E. Mock and her husband B. Kendall of Santa Fe, and Susan J. Sims and her husband Donald M. of Bakersfield, CA, and grandchildren Benjamin N. Block, Michael A. Sims, Abigail E. Block, Brian D. Sims and Margaret J. Block, and cousin Donn W. Block. Services will be held at the United Church of Angel Fire cemetery when the new cemetery is completed. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that if friends wish, they send contributions to the charities of their choice. Arrangements by Rivera-Hanlon Funeral Home.

Peggy H. Anderson, passed through this world peacefully on October 9, 2006. Peggy was born on Dec 21, 1931 in Clarkston, WA, to Irma R. and Louis B. Hagan, Peggy graduated from Edmonds High in 1950. She married Robert W. Anderson, Jr. in 1953, together they had four children. Peggy went on to enjoy a 32 year career at the Virginia Mason Clinic, treating cancer patients and forming lasting and wonderful relationships with her colleagues and her many patients. While juggling the demands of raising her family and her career, Peggy still found time for volunteer work with various agencies, such as the Georgetown Service Center. Peggy retired to collecting art & antiques, knitting and her lifelong passion: great books and a good cup of coffee. She spent the last few years in her homes on Capitol Hill in Seattle and in Ranchos De Taos, New Mexico, enmeshed in the lives of her children Paige, Dana (Robert), Trey (Laura) and Megan, and her beloved, ambitious grandchildren Christa, Taylor, Chase, Whitney, Garren and Griffin, who are her gifts to the world. Peggy is survived by her 4 children, 6 grandchildren, Brothers David and Rodney (Mary Lou) Hagan, her nieces Peggy, Cindy and Kirsten, and her nephews Danny, David, Chip, Craig and Scott, and her sisterinlaw Chick Hagan. Claudina A. Macías, 81, of Ranchos de Taos passed away on October 19, 2006. She is preceded in death by her husband, Felix Macías, sisters, Delfina Sandoval, Grace Chavez, Ernestina Hammer and brother, Sevedeo Sánchez. She is survived by her son, Cipriano J. Macías (Amy) of Ranchos de Taos, grandchildren, Santiago, Samantha and Santana Macias, brother in law, George Hammer, many nieces and nephews. Biljana Radovanovic, 44, of Taos passed away on October 20, 2006. She is preceded in death by her parents Tom and Dana Radovanovic. Rumalda "Ruby" Montoya Solomon, 83, of Los Cordovas passed away on October 9, 2006. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ciria & Hipolito Montoya, sisters and brothers, Quirina DesGeorges, Pauline Quintana, Tito, Polito, Victor and Patricio Montoya, grandparents, Sara “Mamita” & Delfino Martínez, Rumalda & Hipolito Montoya. She is survived by her daughters, Frankie Veronda and Anna Muller both of Albuquerque, sisters, Viola Ortiz and Annie Santistevan, grandchildren WendyAnn Moitoso, Sgt. Harold Veronda, USMC, Michael Troy Veronda, great grandchildren, Danny and Christina Moitoso, Kaela, Haley, Sarah, Casey, Jamie, Martina Joe Veronda, several nephews and nieces. Brandon E. Smallcanyon, 23, of Llano Quemado passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 6, 2006 as a result of an auto accident. He worked at Walmart and was also a manager at McDonalds. Brandon is survived by his mother Valinda Smallcanyon of Llano Quemado and his father Tim Smallcanyon of Kayenta, Arizona. He is also survived by his brother Timothy Small canyon, sister Ashley Bailey Gorman, grandparents Della Charley and Clyde Jones of Arizona. Elvira Martínez died peacefully at her home on October 1, 2006. She was born on January 1, 1922, in Taos, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her parents, Narciso Montoya and Juanita Montoya; brothers: Pedro, Leví and Eusebio, and sister, Terri. She is survived by her daughter Mary Ann; her son, John and wife Susi, granddaughter Illeana, and sister Deliah. Elvira retired from the New Mexico State Highway Department. She was a long time member of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis, a member of the St. Francis Altar Society and a Third Order Secular Franciscan. A visitation was held on October 4, 2006, at Berardinelli, with a rosary following. Mass was held on October 5, 2006, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow. Manuel J. Mondragón, 69, born in Ranchos de Taos and a resident of Albuquerque for 48 years. He died on Sept. 25, 2006 at Loveless Hospital following an illness. He is survived by his wife, Lupe of Alb., three daughters, Lisa Herrera (Rubén) of Alb., Diane Chávez (Joseph) of Los Lunas, Lorraine Campbell of Alb. Three sons, Michael Mondragón, Ricky Mondragón (Theresa) and Richard Campbell and 10 grandchildren all of Alb. His mother Lucille Mondragón of Ranchos de Taos, sisters Frances Cruz and Susan Blea (Ray) of Alb. three brothers, Pat Mondragón (Martha), Fred Mondragón (Patricia) and Arturo Mondragon all from Ranchos de Taos and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by Father, Encarnacion Mondragon and grandson, Johnny Mondragon. Rosary was held on Sept. 27 at Strongthorne Mortuary. Mass was held on Sept. 28 at St. Charles Catholic Church following burial at Fairview memorial cemetery.

Lucille S. Adams, longtime resident of Jémez Springs and Río Rancho, passed away on October 1, 2006 in Albuquerque. Mrs. Adams resided in Taos with her family since 2001. She was born in Jefferson City, Missouri on February 15, 1917 and was married to John A. Adams, Jr., a New Mexico native, for 61 years. Mr. Adams preceded her in death on August 25, 2001. Lucille (Cile) Adams is survived by her three children; a son, Thomas Adams and wife, Pat, of Missoula, Montana, a devoted daughter, Lucille A. Adams and husband, John Dillon, of Taos, NM, and a son, John A. Adams III and wife, Margaret, of Sharpsburg, Georgia; grandchildren, Christopher Adams and wife, Korina, Kathy Adams and their mother, Frocene, Deb and Larry Schock; and three great-grandchildren, Sloane, Mackenzie and Spencer. Cile spent her life as an active mother and enthusiastic supporter of various church activities. She was a lifetime member, choir member, an organist at the Jémez Community Presbyterian Church in Jémez Springs, NM, and an accomplished musician and artist. She was an associate member of the United Church of Angel Fire in Angel Fire, NM, a member of the Order of Eastern Star, White Shrine in Albuquerque, NM. A recognition will be held by family members at the internment at the family gravesite near Jemez Community Presbyterian Church, where Lucile will be laid to rest next to her husband overlooking the Jémez Canyon at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2006. Eliza Archuleta, 92, from Taos, passed away on September 28, 2006. Mrs. Archuleta was a proud foster grandmother for many years. She is preceded in death by her husband José Damián Archuleta. She is survived by her children, Felix “Chum” Archuleta (Linda) of Arroyo Seco, Loyola Rael (Silviano) of Arroyo Seco, Gloria Sánchez (Andy) of Albuquerque and Derrick Archuleta of Albuquerque, her brothers and sisters Raquel García, Epifanio Martínez, Elvira Sahd, Palemón Martínez (Neoma) and Robert Martínez, 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Rosary was recited on September 29, 2006 at Our Lady of Guadalupe. Funeral mass was held on September 30, 2006 at at Our Lady of Guadalupe. Interment followed at Arroyo Seco cemetery. Elizabeth Gatlin Medary (Liz) of Taos and Ft. Worth TX, passed away on September 26, 2006. Liz was born on February 28, 1929 to John and Elizabeth Gatlin in Oklahoma City. She grew up in Albuquerque and graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1946 and the University of New Mexico in 1952 with a B.S. in Geology. She enjoyed life and was a constant explorer and learner. She earned her degree from the University of New Mexico in Geology while raising her oldest daughter, Susie. She continued to raise her children and spent countless hours teaching them, and later her grandchildren, about nature and the outdoors through activities such as fossil hunting, fishing, hunting, bird watching and reading. An adventurer at heart, Liz not only rode motorcycles, but obtained her private pilot's license and could be seen flying high above in her aerobatics plane. After her children had gone to college, Liz continued her passion to teach by joining the faculty at Fort Worth Country Day School where she taught sixth grade earth science. She was always the first to volunteer for field trips to Big Bend National Park and the Texas Gulf Coast. Liz was a dear friend to many and will be missed for her open mind, open heart, generosity and deep held belief that all people are good. She is survived by her children, Dorothy Sue Cooke, Thomas Alan Medary, Sarah Jane Medary, grandchildren, Alex Boyd Cooke, Alyssa Beth Cooke, John Gatlin Medary, Katherine Chandler Medary, Timothy David Longoria and James David Longoria. A memorial service was held on Saturday, September 30, 2006 at the Rivera Chapel at 2 PM with interment to follow at Las Cruces cemetery. Arrangements by Rivera-Hanlon Funeral Home.

Emma C. Durán, 97, of Arroyo Seco passed away on September 26, 2006. She is preceded in death by her husband, Nabor Durán. She is survived by her children, Cecilia Cruz (Gilbert), Emilia Smith and Robert L. Martínez. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, many great grandchildren and other relatives. Rosary was recited on September 28, 2006. Funeral mass was held on September 29, 2006. Both services were held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Arroyo Seco. Hilaria “Lala” Trujillo, 87, of Denver and formerly of Arroyo Hondo passed away on September 24, 2006. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Percy, grandchildren, Daunine Salazar and Ricardo Martínez. She was the cherished wife of Victoriano and mother of Fernando (Adeline) of Pomona, CA, Victor Jr. (Genevieve) of Brighton, CO, Charlie (Diana) of Arroyo Hondo, Richard (Carol) of Chino, CA, Sonny (Pat) of Denver, MaryAnn Martínez of Denver, Fabie Salazar Silva (Manny) of Denver, Peggi Valenzuela of Broomfield, CO, beloved pet Chico, 33 grandchildren, 68 great grandchildren, 9 great great grandchildren, sisters, Adonelia Sánchez (Eufelio) of Taos and Odila Medina (Tony) of Arroyo Hondo, numerous other relatives and friends. Rosary was recited on September 28, 2006 at Trevino Chapel of Roses in Denver. Funeral mass was held on September 29, 2006 at Guardian Angels Church in Denver. Interment was held at Mt. Olivet cemetery in Denver.

Lucille M. Downs of Taos passed away on September 19, 2006. She was born in Zanesville, OH on November 21, 1921. She owned and operated for many years, Mr. Duffy's Kids Play Space and was loved by many Taos children. Many knew her for her volunteer work with the Kit Carson Museums. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Spung in 1970 and second husband, Ralph Downs in 1985, sisters, Margaret Mace and Irene Alderman. She is survived by her sons, Richard Spung II of Taos and John Spung of Monterey, CA, grandchildren, Stacey Tomasello of Monterey, CA, Cameron Spung (Tesheena) of Taos, Carlin Spung of Taos, great grandchildren, Adrian Hunter Spung of Taos, Arianna and Nathaniel Tomasello and Rachel Spung all of Monterey, CA, brothers and sisters, Robert and William McCance both of California, Doris Peterman and Marie McWilliams both of Ohio, as well as many nieces and nephews. Pauly Burt, 66, a very familiar face around Taos passed away on September 24, 2006. He was known as the “paperboy” for Taos. For over 50 years he sold the Taos News, New Mexican and Albuquerque Journal. He is preceded in death by his father, Paul J. Burt and sister, Rosamund Gutiérrez. He is survived by his mother, Jewel Burt, brother, Gordon Burt (Cynthia) of Taos, sisters, Barbara Cozart (Duke) of Tres Piedras and Sylvia Archuleta of Taos, numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Rosary was held on September 27, 2006 at Rivera Chapel. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2006 at 10 AM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with interment to follow at Sierra Vista cemetery. Danny Joe Oldani, 61, of Taos, formerly of Herrin, IL, passed away September 13, 2006. Mr. Oldani was a Business Consultant for obtaining funding for Cancer Center's throughout the world. Danny traveled extensively throughout the world, to areas such as the Manila, Philippines, where he lived for awhile and to New Dehli, India., London, England and Italy. He served as the CEO for Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC, and as the Administrator for the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. He was of the catholic faith and attended OLMC St. Mary's Grade School and Herrin High School and Murray State University at Murray, KY. He was born April 3, 1945 in Herrin, IL to Guido Joseph and Sarah Elizabeth (Cantrell) Oldani. Surviving are, three daughters, Stephanie Michelle Oldani of Carterville, IL, Leslie J. Oldani Benner of New Bedford, MA, Kelly J. Sealy of Herrin, IL; five grandchildren, Patrick A. Oldani of Herrin, Amanda J. Smith of Herrin, Aaron J. Sealy of Herrin, Daniel Edward Benner of New Bedford, MA, Kathryn S. Benner of New Bedford, MA; brother, Michael Oldani of Iowa, nieces and nephew and an honorary grandchild, "Pretty", Stephanie's English Bulldog. He was preceded in death by his parents. Eliza Valerio, 77, of Ranchos de Taos passed away on September 13, 2006. She is preceded in death by her husband Feliberto Valerio in 1988, daughter, Isabel Valerio and 12 brothers and sisters. She is survived by her children, Carmen Durán, Helen Montoya (Isaac), Andy Valerio (Judy), Gloria Passino (George) all of Ranchos de Taos, grandchildren, Thomas Durán, Antonette Martínez, Christopher Valerio, Jonathan and Mark Montoya, Andrew Valerio, Lisa Gallegos, Antonio Passino and 5 great grandchildren. Rosary was recited on September 15, 2006. Funeral mass was held on September 16, 2006. Both services were held at San Francisco de Asís Catholic Church. Interment was held at San Francisco cemetery. Fernando Francisco Rivera, 63, a resident of Rio Rancho and former long time resident of Santa Fé & Taos, passed away peacefully on Sunday September 17, 2006. He was a former police chief for the town of Taos and a United States Marine veteran. He was born on October 2, 1942 in Taos to Gilbert and María Luisa Rivera. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Armando Rivera, Louis Rivera, and Antonio Rivera, sisters; Celina Rivera Martínez and Molly Rivera Ferguson, father inlaw Joseph de la Cruz Ramirez, and brother inlaw Robert Paul Ramírez. He is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Barbara Y. Rivera of Santa Fe & Río Rancho, son, Lt. Matthew Rivera of Florida and daughter, Collette Rivera Wyrick of Arizona, grandchildren, Thomas & Drew Wyrick of Arizona, sisters, Senaida Vigil and husband, Arthur of Taos, Magdalena Santistevan and husband, Jimmy of Taos, Donna Hynes and husband, Jim of Castro Valley, CA, and María Gallegos and husband, Alex of Taos, mother inlaw, Doris Ramírez, brother inlaw, Michael Ramírez and wife Sandra, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Rosary was recited on Wednesday Sept. 20, 2006 at Rivera Chapel. A second rosary will be recited on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006 at 7 PM at La Paloma Funeral Home in Santa Fe. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 at 9 AM at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Santa Fe with interment to follow at Santa Fe National cemetery.
