Graydon Richard Crawley, longtime Texas banker, musician and artist died at his home on May 30, 2006 after a brief illness. Richard, as he was known, was 85. He was born July 30, 1920, in Throckmorton, Texas, to William Keaton Crawley and Carilee Howsley Crawley. He graduated valedictorian from Lamesa High School, attended HardinSimmons University and received his Bachelor’s degree from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and the University of Cincinnati.
In January, 1942, at the age of 21, Richard’s musical career in Cincinnati was interrupted by the US Army. Patton, Jr. for duties with the 7th Army in North Africa and Sicily.
After his discharge in 1945, Richard returned to Texas and married Margaret Ann Morton, setting aside his musical aspirations for a 31 year career in banking. Early retirement permitted the Crawleys to purchase a home just outside Taos, New Mexico where Richard reinvolved himself in music and added painting to his interests. While in Taos, he conducted the pit orchestra for TCA productions of West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof. He also played jazz trumpet at the Thunderbird Lodge in Taos Ski Valley as a member of the Taos Jazz Quartet. In addition, Richard served a term as President of the Taos Art Association.
Services were held June 2, 2006 in Texas. Margaret C. MacArthur, 78, of Marlboro, Vt. died Tuesday, May 23rd at home after a short illness. She was born in Chicago and lived throughout the United States while growing up. At the age of 16 she attended the University of Chicago where she met John, her husband of almost 60 years. They moved to Newfane, Vt. in 1948, started a family and moved to their farm in Marlboro in 1951. It was while living in Missouri as a child that she first started hearing the mountain ballads that were to become her life long passion. As she raised her family in Vermont her interest in the old songs continued to grow, especially songs that told stories of times past. She devoted much of the rest of her life to collecting, singing and recording these songs, as well as writing and performing songs of her own about New England folk life. For her work with preserving the oral traditions she received many awards during her lifetime, including being designated a New England Living Art Treasure in 1985, being presented with a Senate Tribute by Jim Jeffords in 1997, and, most recently, being invited to sing at the Library of Congress and the Kennedy Center in 2005. When Margaret wasn’t on the road performing she was mass producing her phenomenal home made bread, working in her beautiful gardens and living the simple life. Besides her husband John of Marlboro she leaves four children, Johnny, of Taos, New Mexico, Dan, Gary and Megan of Marlboro, six grandchildren, and three siblings, Jim and Jack Crowl, and Sally Crowl Edelman of New Mexico. She was predeceased by parents John and Margaret Crowl, of Taos, and son Patrick. Donations in Margaret’s name may be sent to the Vermont Folk Life Center, Margaret MacArthur Collection P.O. Box 442 Middlebury, VT, 05753, to help preserve and perpetuate her work with Vermont folk songs.
