Carol Barela

Carol Barela, 41, of Portales, died Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at her home in Portales.
She was born Sept. 22, 1964, in Portales, to Aurelia and Frank Barela.
She grew up in Portales and graduated from high school in 1982. She worked at Alco for 16 years. She also worked as a checker at IGA. In 1999 she went to work at the local Wal-Mart store. In 2002 her health deteriorated to a point that she could no longer work.
Family members said she had a lifelong love of music of all types.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include a sister, Lydia Barela of Portales; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 p.m. Friday at St. Helen Catholic Church.
Father Tobin Hitt will officiate.
Burial will take place in Portales Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers are her cousins.

Antonia Adame Olivas

Antonia Adame Olivas, 65, of Denver City, Texas, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2005, in Denver City.
She was born March 11, 1940, in Carmargo Chihuahua, Mexico, to Eligio and Barbarita Adame. She married Merced Olivas on Feb. 11, 1961, in Ojinaga Chihuahua, Mexico. She was a housewife and a mother.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and her parents.
Survivors include her step-mother, Augustina Adame of Ojinaga Chihuahua, Mexico; sons, Jose Olivas of Cleburne, Texas, and Merced Fernando Olivas of Ojinaga Chihuahua, Mexico; daughter, Teresa Parde of Denver City, Texas; granddaughter, Lluvia Olivas of Denver City; step-daughter, Avundia Diaz of Portales; brothers, Francisco Adame of Ojinaga Chihuahua, Mexico, Eleuterio Adame and Juan Ramon Adame of Odessa, Texas; sisters, Lorenza Chavez of Torreon Coahuila, Mexico, Maria De La Luz Nieto and Cleotilde Adame of Ojinaga Chihuahua, Mexico; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Jose P. Olivas, Jose P. Olivas, Jr., Jose R. Parada, Jose R. Parada, Jr., Jose Luis Gomez, Juan Ramon Adame, Wesland Galindo, Alonso Adame, Eligio Adame and Hernanan Adam.

Pauline Brown

Pauline Brown, 88, of Clovis, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
She was born Nov. 19, 1917, in Ranger, Texas, to Jack and Ruby Scarborough Tidwell.
She had been a longtime Clovis resident and had worked as a beautician at Kirby’s Beauty Shop in Portales.
Family members said she loved to go to church and be with her friends. She was a member of Kingswood United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tommy Brown; and brothers, Gaston, Durrell and Orlin.
Survivors include her sisters, Audry Bedell of Odessa, Texas, Betty Wesberry of Mesquite, Texas, and Mary Jouett of Oklahoma City; and numerous nieces and nephews
Rev. Brad Reeves is officiating.
Cremation has taken place.

Wade Dendy
Services: 2 p.m. Friday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.
Wade Dendy, 47, of Portales, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, at his home in Portales.
He was born March 10, 1958, in Lubbock to Vera and Ed Dendy.
The family moved to Bovina from Lubbock when he was 5. In 1969, they came to Portales. He was a 1976 graduate of Portales High School. Following high school, he moved back to Lubbock where he was employed for several years at O’Hair Shutters. On Jan. 1, 1982, he was married to Natalie Piekarski. A short time after their marriage the couple moved to Portales.
He was employed in the Maintenance Department at Eastern New Mexico University until 1997 when he became a full-time caretaker for his wife until her death. After her death in 1999, he became a phone operator at Cannon Air Force Base, and later worked at ENMRSH.
When his parents became seriously ill he quit to care for them until their deaths. Family members said he became disabled in June 2004, and since that time had been unable to work. Family members said he enjoyed watching old western movies and trivia games on television. He also had a large collection of music of various genres.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Natalie.
Survivors include his brothers, Larry Dendy (and wife Donna) of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Joe Dendy of DeQueen, Ark.; and sister, Judy Privett (Johnny) of Portales.
Scott P. Reeves will officiate.

Richard Blalock
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Portales.
Richard Blalock, 46, of Portales, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
He was born Feb. 8, 1959, in Hobbs to Doris and Walter Blalock. He retired from the Eastern New Mexico University Physical Plant in 2004 due to failing health.
Family members said his hobbies included hunting arrowheads with his mentor and Uncle Ken Bedinger and collecting miniature cars and motorcycles. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was proud of his two nieces, Andrea and Kiley Blalock.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his mother, Doris Blalock of Portales; brother, Mike Blalock (and wife, Gaylene) of Monahans, Texas; sister, Jan Blalock of Portales; nieces, Andrea Blalock of Portales and Kiley Blalock of Denton, Texas; and numerous aunts and uncles and longtime friend, Vicki Olgin
Rev. Winston Berry and Rev. Dick Ross will officiate.
Burial will take place in Monahans, Texas, at a later date

Wanda P. (Polly) Turner

Mrs. Wanda P. (Polly) Turner, 83, of Elida, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
She was born July 28, 1922, near Louis, Okla., to Ruth S. (Cox) and William P. Jones.
She married V. L. Kellogg in September 1942.
She moved to Portales in the mid-1960s and worked as a desk clerk at the Portales Inn for several years. She married Elbert Turner on Oct. 21, 1980. The couple made their home in Elida where they operated a mechanic shop until his death. She enjoyed playing the guitar, and played for several years with a small local band known as the Southwesterners, family members said.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Bonnie Jean; a son, James Preston, and her second husband, Elbert Turner.
She is survived by a son, John T. Kellogg of Norfolk, Va., a daughter, Kathy Mangers (and husband, Paul V.) of Conway, S.C., and a half brother, Glen Wood.

Elrie Capps
Services: 10 a.m. today at Calvary Baptist Church in Portales.
Elrie Capps, 94, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
She was born to Alice and Will Ray on April 5, 1911, in Rockdale, Texas.
When she was 12 years old the family moved to New Home, Texas, and then to Mount Zion, near Dora. She attended the Rogers School where she played on the girls’ basketball team.
On April 11, 1929, she was married to Jewel Capps. In 1956 they moved to Portales. She worked at Turner’s Department Store in Portales. She remained in her home until 1978 when she became one of the first residents of Golden Acres where she lived for 17 years.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Family members said she loved seeing new places and meeting new friends. In 2003 she was honored as the Roosevelt County Pioneer Woman of the Year.
Mrs. Capps was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lou Ella Ferguson and Lola Bane, her son-in-law, Bill Foster, a great-granddaughter and by her husband.
She is survived by her daughter, Charlene Foster of Portales; three grandchildren, Larry Foster (and wife Jane) of Midland, Texas, Shirley Prokop ( Mike) of Clovis and Ronny Foster (Lee Ann) of Portales; nine great-grandchildren, Jill McCall, Jodie Rhodes, Jana Moyer, Ty and Tanner Foster, Terra and Kaylee Foster, and Ross and Travis Foster; six great-great-grandchildren, Trevor, Taylor and Kallie McCall, and Emma, Alex and Abby Moyer; one brother-in-law, Bob Bane of Colorado.
Burial will take place at Portales Cemetery. Herbert Bergstrom will officiate, assisted by Rev. Wesley McAfee.
Larry, Ronny, Ty and Tanner Foster, Mike Prokop and Ross Prokop will serve as pallbearers. Her nieces and nephews and the staff of Heartland Continuing Care Center will be honorary pallbearers.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Mexico Baptist Children’s Home.

Billy Lloyd Derrick

Billy Lloyd Derrick, 62, of Portales died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
He was born to Frank and Inva V. Belyeu-Derrick on Jan. 15, 1944, in Roswell.
He married Sarah Lee Derrick on May 18, 1963. She died in 1978. He then married Sharon Grippin.
Family members said he was a true cowboy. His profession included managing farms, cattle doctor, breaking and training horses.
He was preceded in death by his first wife and his parents.
He is survived by eight children, Tonya Vineyard of Melrose, Sherry Horn of Ohio, Chellie Gillespie of Alabama, Rebecca Carrasco of Albuquerque, Connie Hartman of Holloman Air Force Base, Cherry Gallegos of Clovis, Crystal Hobbs of Portales, and Billy Derrick Jr. of Tennessee; 17 grandchildren, Jessica Sanchez, Christopher Conner, John R. Woodcock IV, Sarah Woodcock, Sarah Conner, Callen Shane Mitchell, Cody Woodcock, Miranda Derrick, Kevin Mitchell, Justin Vineyard, Bradley Gillespie, Adam Hobbs, Olivia Carrasco, Tyler Derrick, Gavin Hartman, Jake Gallegos and Ethan Derrick; four great-grandchildren; his wife, of Portales, and a brother, Ed Derrick of Amarillo.
Graveside services will be held at Sunset Terrace Memorial Cemetery in Farwell. Raymond Derrick will officiate.
Christopher Conner, John R. Woodcock, IV, Callen Shane Mitchell, Cody Woodcock, Kevin Mitchell and Justin Vineyard will serve as pallbearers.

Billy Dene Brownlee
Services: 2 p.m. today at the Portales Cemetery
Billy Dene Brownlee, 73, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at her home northwest of Portales.
She was born to Myree and Donald LeRoy Helton on Aug. 13, 1932, in Rose, Okla.
Mrs. Brownlee grew up in Fort Sumner, and graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1951. In her youth she was a member of Rainbow for Girls, and also played tennis. She was working in Santa Rosa when she met Willie Brownlee, and they were married May 24, 1952. They moved frequently for a number of years, but for the past 28 years she had made her home in Portales.
For several years she worked as a dietitian at Roosevelt General Hospital. She had been retired for about 10 years. She was at one time a Red Cross volunteer. Family members said she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a wonderful cook and an accomplished seamstress and quilter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, Pattie Zamora, Lois Norwood, Juanita McCalla, and another who died shortly after birth, a grandson, Clifford Ralph (Bronc) Jones IV and by her husband.
She is survived by three daughters, Laura Abeyta (and husband Louis) of Taiban, Frances Tillery (Dexter) of Amarillo, and Tricia Potter (Roger) of Clovis, eight grandchildren, Myra Anne Duenas, Louis R. Abeyta Jr., Joshua and Chad Abeyta, Niki Ham, Chase Tillery, Bobby Potter, and Tammy Brown and 24 great-grandchildren; one sister, Nancy Bourland of Amarillo.
Rev. J. R. (Dick) Ross will officiate services.
Dexter Tillery, Louis Abeyta, Roger Potter, Bull Bourland, Tom James, Reece Norwood, Mac Bowers, Wes Longo and Eric Miller will be honorary pallbearers.

Tomas (Red) Escamilla

Tomas (Red) Escamilla, 73, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at his home west of Portales.
He was born to Mary and Ciriaco Escamilla on Nov. 27, 1932, in Allcreek, Colo.
Mr. Escamilla grew up in the Las Cruces area. He worked as a farm laborer in the area of Maple, Texas, before joining the Army in 1955. After serving in Korea for a year, he returned to the Muleshoe area to work on local farms. He moved to Portales in the early 1970s. At first he was employed at Worley Mills, and then in 1974 he went to work for Roosevelt County in the road department. He eventually became a foreman for a road crew. He retired on June 30, 1995. Family members said “Red” enjoyed fishing and boating at the lake and restoring old cars.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ciriaco in 2000.
He is survived by his companion Anita Perez; one daughter; Marie (and husband Sal) Rivera of Dimmitt, Texas, his mother; one brother, Lorenzo Escamilla of Amarillo; six sisters, Maria Santisteven of Trinidad, Colo., Julia Escamilla of Denver, Rose Longoria of Canyon, Texas, Bea Stevens of Canyon, Texas, Donna Medina of Fresno, Calif. and Marie Escamilla Ray of Fresno, Calif.
Rudy Rivera, Ray Paiz, Manuel Ornelas, Manuel Orosco, Sam Garcia and Ramon Sanchez will serve as pallbearers.
Roosevelt County road department employees will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at St. Helen Catholic Church. Mass will celebrated. Father James McGowan will officiate. Burial will take place at Elida Cemetery.

Richard Fawcett

Dr. Richard Fawcett, 75, of Kerrville, Texas, died at his home Friday, Feb. 3, 2006.
Dr. Fawcett was a native of Kirkwood, Mo., and graduated from high school there. He attended Drury College on an athletic scholarship, served in the U.S. Air Force, and then received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Missouri.
He was employed at Oak Ridge Atomic Laboratory and taught at Central Missouri State College, the University of Arizona, and Texas A & M, where he received his Ph.D. degree in 1969.
He taught for 25 years at Eastern New Mexico University where he met his wife Dr. Penny Stewart. Upon their retirement, the couple moved to Kerrville in 1996.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Richelle Fawcett Longo (and husband Chuck) of Comanche, Texas; sister Claire Martin (Thomas) of Belleville, Ill.; brother Donald Fawcett of Los Angeles; and step-daughters Helen Currie Husband (Jon) and grandson Sam Husband of Odessa, Texas; Susan Currie Suthon (Felton) of Metairie, La.; Millibeth Currie Basco (Bill), and grandchildren, Adelaide, Will, and Emmeline Basco of Mount Pleasant, S. C.; cousins Marilyn Fawcett Sorenson (Alan) of San Antonio, Texas, and Dr. Roy Martin (and wife Bettye) of Fort Worth, Texas.
Family members said “our Clown Angel" will be missed by his family, former students, friends and all whom he touched with his humor.

Naomi Clary

Naomi Clary, 83, of Portales died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, at her residence.
She was born Aug. 28, 1922, in Thomaston, Ala., to Elsie Mae and Coleman K. Perkins. She grew up and attended school in Grand Junction, Colo. She married Ralph Clary on April 5, 1944, in Jacksonville, Fla. She returned to college when he was declared M.I.A. in Korea.
She graduated in 1956 from the University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree. She married Kenneth R. Clary on June 2, 1956. She moved to Encinitas, Calif., in 1963 and began working for the California Department of Social Services as a social worker. She received her master’s degree in social work from the University of California at San Diego in 1970. She retired in 1985 as the head of Child Protective Services.
She moved to Portales in 1993 and traveled extensively throughout China and Europe.
She attended the First United Methodist Church of Portales.
Family members said she enjoyed singing and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Norma Hollansworth; and by her first husband.
Survivors include a son, Robert Clary (and wife, Jordan) of Haikou, Hainan, China; two daughters, Ann Riddle (Sonny) of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas, and Kim Cane (Art) of Portales; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four nephews

Carolina L. Greg

Carolina L. Greg, 93, of Fort Summer, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at Plains Regional Medical Center following an illness.
She was born May 18, 1912, in Canada, Colo., to Abler Lope and Repeat Sandal.
She attended school at Alma. She married Susan Greg on Sept. 4, 1929, in Santa Rose. They ranched northeast of Fort Summer until his death in 1949. Following her husband’s death, she moved into Fort Summer, where she raised her family.
She was a homemaker, a member of American Legion Unit 21 auxiliary, where she received the sergeant-at-arms medal. She was a devoted member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Summer.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son, Abler Greg; a grandson Michael Greg; a daughter-in-law, Esther Greg; four brothers Isaac, Mx, Jack and Nick Lope; eight sisters, Adelaide, Rosary, Maria and Alice Royal, Olympia Lujan, Juanita and Pablita Lopez, and Dulsenea Gutierrez.
Survivors include a daughter, Crusita Sena (and husband, Ramon) of Clovis; three sons, Nicanor Griego (Jo); Juan Griego (Viola) of Fort Sumner and Sam Griego of Las Vegas, N.M.; a nephew raised as a son, Eddie Roybal (Irene) of Las Vegas, N.M.; a daughter-in-law, Charlotte Griego of Fort Sumner; a sister, Louisa Gonzales of Fort Sumner; an aunt, Barbara Griego of Albuquerque; two sisters-in-law, Margie Tapia and Eloisa Lopez; and a brother-in-law, Jose Martinez.
Father Gerald Johnson officiated services.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Rob, Johnny Ray, Kurt, Nicolas and Jerry Griego and Daniel Michael Sena.
