Dorothy Alene Degner
Aug. 18, 1923 - Feb. 4, 2007
Dorothy Alene Degner, 83, of Farmington, passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, in Albuquerque, surrounded by her loving family. Dorothy was born Aug. 18, 1923, in Oberlin, Kan., to Alan and Margaret Marsh.
As a young girl growing up in Kansas, she was very athletic and loved swimming and baseball. She was considered a "tomboy" by her friends, and was very competitive in school. She was a high school cheerleader in Great Bend, Kan. This is where she met the love of her life, Otto Degner, at a high school football dance. They were married Jan. 17, 1942. They celebrated 65 years of marriage this past January. Otto passed away July 3, 2006.
Otto was in the U.S. Army when they were married, and Dorothy moved to Georgia to spend as much time together before he was shipped out overseas. He returned from World War II as a Master Sgt. in the 4th Signal Corps, 4th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star, and five battle stars.
After the war, they moved to Hollyrood, Kan., where Otto started work for Atlantic Richfield Oil Company. He retired after 38 years at ARCO.
In 1960, the Degner family moved to Farmington. Dorothy was involved with local activities right off the bat. Raising three kids and being a housewife, she always found time to serve her community, whether it be the hospital auxiliary — where she spent 22 years and 4,000 hours of voluntary service — or baseball! Dorothy spent many years at the ballpark, from working in the concession stands, to serving as treasurer of the Connie Mack World Series. She was instrumental in making Farmington one of the best baseball towns in America. She was also the Parade Marshal in 1974.
Dorothy was an artist with many talents. Besides painting, making her own clothes, and gardening - she fell in love with weaving, where she has become a wool master. Dorothy looked forward to attending workshops and gathering with her friends to share new ideas. Her spinning wheel was an extension of her life, but so was the Catholic Church. Religion played a significant role in her life, which made her such a strong person. Anyone that knew her could feel the warmth and gentleness she reflected.
Above all, there is one activity that she shared with her husband, Otto — square dancing. Otto was an international square dance caller, known throughout the world. Of course, his better-half Dorothy was there by his side the entire time. They taught over 2,000 people how to square dance.
Otto was club caller for Buckles and Bows in Farmington for 42 years. He recorded for Rawhide Records in Los Angeles. They weaved their way through the square dance world and called dances in Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, Japan, and on eight square dance cruises in the Caribbean. In 1982, they were inducted into the Square Dance Hall of Fame.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Otto; and her granddaughter, Christina Marie Schnorr.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Schnorr of Albuquerque; her two sons, John Degner of Anguilla, B.W.I., and Robert Degner and Cynthia McDowell of La Plata; her sisters-in-Iaw, Helena Wallace and son Richard, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Mary Mai of Winfield, Kan.; her Japanese son, Kosaku Sasaki and wife, Keiko, of Yamato, Japan; honorary son, David Bair and wife, Emily, of Las Cruces; granddaughter, Shannon Guillen and husband, Capt. Kathryn Elaine Magee Israel
April 14, 1925 - Feb. 4, 2007
Kathryn Elaine Magee Israel, of Aztec, entered into eternal life Friday, Feb. 4, 2007, at her home, surrounded by her loved ones. The world is better for her life, and diminished by the end of that life on this earth. Kathryn Magee was born April 14, 1925, to Charles William and Ona Magee, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Robert K. (Bob) Israel; two sons, Arthur Kent Miller and wife, Carol, of Bloomfield, and Gary Miller and wife, Gail, of Farmington. She also leaves behind two daughters, Patty Townley, and Cindy Taylor and husband, Dennis, of Aztec; as well as a brother, Gerald Magee and wife, Avon; and a sister, Dorothy Wood of Bloomfield. Kathryn left a legacy of love to her 14 grandchildren, including her grandson, Dustin Miller, who greets her now in heaven; 17 surviving great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her brother, James Magee; half-brother, Tom Magee; sister, Carolyn Cavner; and stepfather, R.H. (Skeet) Herbert preceded her in death.
Kathryn lived her entire life in Aztec, graduating from Aztec High School in 1943. She later went on to marry Arthur (Art) Miller, who was the father of her four children. One of her greatest accomplishments in life was raising her children as a single parent, in a time when such an endeavor was a considerable challenge. She did so with courage, strength, and dignity, which is the way she lived her life.
Kathryn met Bob Israel when they both worked for the city of Aztec; she as a utilities clerk and he in the parks department. They were married on May 16, 1970, and lived out her remaining years together. Before their health precluded it, they enjoyed traveling together, with Las Vegas being one of their favorite destinations.
Kathryn was incredibly loving and giving, and found good in all people and all circumstances. Her quick wit and sense of humor delighted her family, and those who were blessed to have her touch their lives. Even when her health failed and she was thrust into a nightmare of hospitals, procedures and pain, her sweet spirit prevailed, and even her doctors and nurses grew to love her. It was her quiet faith that sustained her.
Kathryn was a woman of beauty and grace, inside and out. She would proudly boast to anyone who would listen that her children and grandchildren were the joy of her life. Kathryn loved to collect porcelain dolls, and couldn't wait to show her latest treasure to her adoring family. Each doll carefully and lovingly chosen, adorned the home that she shared with her husband, Bob.
A celebration of Kathryn's life will be at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Aztec Methodist Church, 123 E. Chaco St. in Aztec, with Pastor Kim Kinsey officiating.
There are no words to describe the void her passing leaves in the lives of those of us who love her. Yet we joyfully relinquish our precious wife, mother, grandmother and sister to the loving God who created her. We rest secure in the knowledge that her pain and suffering are over, as she claims the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. To God be the glory!
