ALFONSO LOPEZ
Age 86, a long time resident of Velarde, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2007. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lila V. Lopez; daughter, Lillian Lopez; father, Fabian Lopez; mother, Carlota Montoya-Lopez and brothers, Alberto, Benceslado and Transito Lopez. Prior to raising his family in Velarde, he had been a sheet welder at shipyards during WWII, a dump truck driver, a construction worker and a foreman for Richard Cook at the Española Transit Mix, from which he retired in 1982. Alfonso is survived by his daughters, Yolanda Martinez and husband Andrew of Texas and Eileen Crowley and husband Barry of Oregon; son, Charles “Chuck” Lopez of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Adrianna Martinez-Goodland and husband Wayne, Arlissa Martinez-Lovett and husband Eric all of Texas, and Riki Ruonavaara and husband Tom of California; as well as by eight great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. The family of Alfonso Lopez has entrusted his funeral arrangements to DeVargas Funeral Home of the Española Valley.

MARY JANE FORD
passed away on December 22, 2007 from deteriorating health. A long time resident of Houston, Texas, she moved to Los Alamos to be by her daughter when her health failed. She was born November 1, 1915 at her grandparent’s home in Benton, Illinois. Jane, as her friends and family called her, was the oldest of four children born to T.O. and Blanche Morris Sloan. She spent her childhood in West Frankfort, Illinois.
On a blind date April 1, 1935 she met her husband William Lee Ford. They married August 31, 1935 and were happily married until his death in 1983. They spent their married life in Illinois, Oklahoma and Texas. A loving mother, a devoted wife and a fun grandmother she loved the game of golf and was an avid bridge player. She spent her latter years traveling around the world, telling everyone her middle name was “Go”. One of her favorite trips was to England, the home of her ancestors. Jane will be remembered for her wit and stories she loved to tell.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister Dorothy Patton.
Jane is survived by two daughters and their spouses: Linda and Pel Stringer of Tulsa Oklahoma and Diane and Dale Van Buren of Los Alamos, NM and two brothers and their spouses: Tom and Barbara Sloane of Berkley, CA and Dick and Carolyn Sloan of Bakersfield, CA.
Jane was affectingly called “Mimi” by her 3 granddaughters, their spouses and seven grandchildren: Robin and Paul Drake and their children Amanda, Daniel, and Sarah: Laura Godel and her daughters, Danielle Campbell and Hannah: Christy Van Buren and her children Christopher Hernandez and Chelsey Hoffman.
In her latter years she became “Mimi” to four step grandchildren and their children: John Van Buren; Doyle and Rainbow Van Buren and children Phoebe and Inga; Taylor Van Buren and son Dane; Wade and Sue Van Buren and children Brittany, Ryan and Jay

Jane’s ashes were united with Bill’s and they will be interred in The Ford family plot at Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale, Illinois. The family of Mary Jane Ford has entrusted her cremation arrangements to DeVargas Funeral Home of the Espanola Valley.

GUADALUPE ESPINOZA

Age 49, a resident of El Llano, passed away on Friday, December 28, 2007. She was preceded in death by her father, Donaciano J. Espinoza. Guadalupe was a lifelong resident of El Llano. She was an avid dancer and all around outdoor lady. She worked for the Española Visiting Nursing Services, taking care of elderly patients for 18 years and was later employed by KSL in Los Alamos. She loved her family and will be dearly missed. Guadalupe is survived by her daughters, Janet C. Garcia and companion Joel Baca and Sandra J. Garcia and companion Isaac Gallegos all of El Llano; brother, Gabriel Espinoza and wife Peggy of La Puebla; sisters, Angela Ortiz and husband Steven and Yolanda Herrera all of El Llano; granddaughter, Julie Gallegos of El Llano; ex-husband, Chris P. Garcia of El Llano; mother, Andrellita Espinoza of El Llano; God-son, Steven Ortiz Jr. of El Llano and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Apolonia Martinez

Age 96, a resident of Chamita passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Martinez; parents, Amarante and Margarita Martinez; brothers, Ubaldo and Johnny Martinez; sisters, Mary Medina, Matilda Martinez, Nellie Marquez; grandsons, Praxedes Martinez, and Eddie R. and David J. Aragon. Apolonia is survived by her daughter, Daisy Aragon; son, Daniel P. Martinez, both of Chamita; grandson who she raised, Joseph D. Aragon, who later helped care for her; grandchildren, Manuelita, Jeffrey, Diane, and Yvonne; 12 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, and numerous relatives and friends. JOSE BENABE “BERNIE” PEREZ JR.

Age 65, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 4, 2008. Bernie, as he was known to his family and friends, was a long time resident of Nambe Pueblo. Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, Bernie Sr. and Margaret Perez and a step-son, Greg Lucero Perez. Bernie was a former resident of Santa Fe, where he graduated from Santa Fe High School and later served in the US Navy for 15 ½ years. He was on the USS New Orleans ship that recovered the astronauts of Apollo 13. He was not only a wonderful father, grandfather, brother but also an uncle and a friend who is going to be greatly missed. Bernie is survived by his daughter, Margaret “Peggy” Adams and husband Butch of Las Cruces; sons, Gregory Perez of Albuquerque, Randy Perez and wife Basilia of Nambe Pueblo, Daniel Perez and wife Beverly of Santa Fe; step-children, Gilbert Ortega and wife Clara of Virginia, Cindy Perez Carrillo of Pecos and Tammy Ortega of Santa Fe; brothers and sisters, Jim Perez and wife Sandi and Louie Perez, Anabelle Gallegos and husband Albert, Judy Mendiola and husband Alex, Diane Muller and husband Patrick; grandchildren, Amanda Cobb, Johnathan and Joshua Adams, Brady, Martin and Reyes Perez, Jasmine, Dominga and Herma Ortega and an unborn granddaughter, Alyssa Perez and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. PAULINE ELIZABETH MARTINEZ

Age 71, a resident of Hernandez, passed away on the same day that Christ gave her to us. Pauline was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Pauline and Tomas enjoyed the outdoors, particularly camping. She enjoyed socializing and was a people person who was very good at listening to friends and family. One of her passions was spending time with her grandchildren and playing various board games and playing cards. Carmen Cook

Age 85, born July 16, 1922 lived in Black Lake, New Mexico during her youth and graduated from Menaul School in Albuquerque in 1940. After graduation she attended business school in Santa Fe then worked in Washington, D.C. during World War II. While in Washington, D.C., in one of her jobs, she acted as a Spanish translator in the East Wing of the White House. Throughout her life, she stressed education and many women credit her encouragement for their college degrees. She supported Menaul School and served on the Board of Directors. As secretary to the president of the fledgling Institute of American Indian Arts, Mrs. Cook provided the support needed to enable the school to grow into a world class institute. A tireless worker, Mrs. Cook helped her husband Roland Cook build an apple cider, honey and roadside fruit business. In later life they became ranchers in Black Lake. Mrs. Cook is remembered as a person with a sense of humor, committed to service to others and the importance of investing in your children. She loved and indulged her grandchildren. Mrs. Cook is survived by her children, Larry Cook, Robert Cook and Tina Cook-Baca, 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Christy Albrecht of Huntersville, NC., and brother, Solomon Mares of Española. RAYMOND “POOKEY” SANDOVAL

Age 31, a resident of Española, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2008 following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dolores and Luis Sandoval; maternal grandparents, Felix and Rita Serna; paternal grandparents, Sophie and Juan Quintana; brothers, Jerome Sandoval, Ralph Quintana, Charles Sandoval and Felix Serna Sr. and sisters, Eva Valerio and Geraldine Sandoval. Ray was known for his kind heart, his beautiful smile and his friendly ways. He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him. A resident of White Rock, died peacefully at the family home following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernadette Gonzales. Jack is survived by his children, Judy Montoya and husband David of Arizona, Jacob Espinoza of Rio Rancho, Kenneth Gonzales and wife Kelly of Texas, Clifford Gonzales of White Rock, Barbara Gonzales of Los Alamos and Patty Trupp Hampton of Los Alamos; sister, Connie Redman of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Cyndi, Shannon and James Montoya, Jacob “Brice” Espinoza and Natalie Hawkins of Rio Rancho, James, Timothy Jack, Kenneth and Christopher Gonzales and numerous other relatives and friends. Jose C. Carrillo

Age 89, a resident of Chama passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Rebecca Carrillo; parents, Salvador and Maria Beatriz Martinez; sons, Jose Isaac and Marcello Duvegeño “Dubby” Carrillo; brothers, Rafael and Salvador Carrillo; and sister, Dulcenea Carrillo. Jose was a member of the VFW. In 1944 he served in WWII and was honored with the Purple Heart along with other metals. He enjoyed fishing and woodworking and carving, and liked spending time visiting family and friends. He is survived by his sons, James and wife Mitzie of Moriarty, NM, Jose (Gene) and wife Felicia of Little Rock AK., and Raymond Carrillo of Albuquerque; daughter, Rosemary Madrid and husband Joe of Chama; grandchildren, Michelle, Autumn, Victoria, Edith, Christopher, Tammy, Ricky, Michael, Samantha, Rebecca, Baltazar, Emily, Eugene, Joelle, Carlos and Leroy, and 20 great-grandchildren. TOMMY HERNANDEZ

Age 62, a resident of White Rock, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2008. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Hernandez. He was a devoted husband and loving father. He was an avid hunter that took pride in the beautiful bull elk that he had bagged in the Gila. Tommy loved all of his friend’s children and they returned his love. He will be missed by his loved ones, his friends and his precious pets. He was a truly blessed man. KATHERINE TEBA

Age 81, a resident of Santa Clara Pueblo, passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2008 peacefully at her home. Katherine was born in Santa Clara Pueblo on October 23, 1927 to Jose Reyes and Lucaria Tafoya. She worked at the Institute of American Indian Arts when the campus was at the Santa Fe Indian School and later at the Santa Fe Indian School for 38 years as the director of food services. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benny Teba; parents, Jose Reyes and Lucaria Tafoya; sisters, Phyllis Tafoya and Maria Toledo; brothers, Jose Miguel, Avelino and Robert Tafoya. Katherine is survived by her sons, Bernie Teba and wife Debra, Steve Teba and wife Jeanette; daughter, Velma Teba; grandchildren, Halona, Jonathan, Bernie Teba Jr., Liana, Felicia, Steve N. Jr. and Veronica; great-grandchildren, Justine, Anthony, Nathan, Jamie and Jesse James and numerous other relatives and friends. Rebecca Nell Ledinski

Age 92, passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2008. Beloved mother and grandmother, she is survived by her children, Yvonne Padilla of Raton, Diane Snyder of Dallas, TX. and Mitchell Matthew Ledinski Jr. of Galveston, TX.; 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Charlene Hartell of Española, Millie McCoy and Mary McAfee of Dallas, and sister-in-law, Jo Still of Dallas. HENRY SEAN VELARDE

Age 32, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 23, 2008. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Freddie Velarde; paternal grandfather, Enrique Velarde; maternal grandfather, Victor Atencio. Henry was a loving father and enjoyed spending time with his children and family. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, camping and snowmobiles. Henry was a kind hearted and soft spoken person who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He always greeted his family and friends with a smile and always saw the best in people. He was the family’s champion, protector and will be greatly missed. Henry is survived by his wife, Tara Velarde; children, Kyana, Andres, Tristan and Trinity Velarde all of Albuquerque; mother, Noami Atencio and husband John Sanchez of Chamisal; sister, Andrea Velarde of Phoenix, Arizona; maternal grandmother, Olivama Atencio of Chamisal; paternal grandmother, Eufelia Velarde of Ojo Sarco; parents-in-law, Rowdy Wade and wife Debbie of Vadito; brother-in-law, Rod Wade of Española; grandparents-in-law, Johnny Archuleta and wife Severiana of Vadito and numerous other relatives and friends. RICKY DANIEL “PRESSURE” MARTINEZ

Age 41, a resident of Chimayo, beloved son, brother and uncle went home on Sunday, January 27, 2008 following a sudden illness. Ricky was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Gregorio and Honorita Mondragon; paternal grandparents, Emiliano and Ramoncita Martinez; aunts, Cordelia Marquez, Aurora Mondragon, Loretta Montoya and Anselma Pacheco; uncles, Benny, Eliseo and Carmen Martinez. Ricky was a very loving and caring nurse at St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe, where he worked very hard and was employed there since the age of 16. He also enjoyed fishing in the Santa Cruz River behind his home in Chimayo but his favorite past time was cheering on his favorite football team, the Pittsburg Steelers. He made so many friends with co-workers and patients; he will be missed by all. Ricky is survived by his parents, Ross and Rose Martinez; sister, Roberta Duran and husband Michael; brothers, Phil Martinez and wife Jackie, Joseph Ross Martinez and wife Carmen; and very close cousin Sammy Martinez and wife Debbie; aunts, Toni Quintana, Lucy Archuleta and husband Hilbert, Adelina Romero, Tillie Martinez; uncles, Ruben Pacheco, Joseph Montoya, Gabriel Mondragon and wife Helen and Vicente Martinez and numerous other relatives and friends. Susan Dunn Smith

Passed from this world in the early morning hours of January 27, 2008 to be with our Lord. She left the world in the same manner that she lived her life; filled with love, determination, and an independent spirit. Born and raised in Taos, New Mexico. A daughter of Long John Dunn, she was nurtured in and loved the various cultures of northern New Mexico. And as such, was an accomplished colcha artist, of which she was extremely proud. Enlisting in the Navy in World War II, she served her country faithfully and honorably. At the end of her life she still used one of her favorite expressions, “Time to abandon ship.” She is survived by loving family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Elaine N. CORNELIO HERRERA SR.

A beloved father and grandfather departed our world to enter the kingdom of heaven on January 27th, 2008 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Cornelio was 96 years old and was born in Nambe, NM on August 13th, 1911 to David and Manuelita Herrera. Cornelio was and will always be dearly loved by those he leaves behind….he will always be remembered for being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle as well as a friend to many. Cornelio worked for the County for several years but his true passions were: planting gardens, farming and simply being outdoors. Those preceding Cornelio in death were his parents, David and Manuelita Herrera; his wife, Antonia Herrera; son, Lazaro; grandsons, James and Toby Herrera; sons-in-law, Jose H. Surviving him also are his brothers, Flaviano, Lorenzo and wife Emma, and David Herrera and wife Josie; brothers-in-law, Merced and Garcedan Sandoval and sisters-in-law, Susie, Pita, and Maria Herrera, Natividad Drisdale, Ernestina Sandoval, Chana Gomez and Juanita Misere. He is lastly survived by 30 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren and several god-children. Also, we would like to acknowledge the wonderful, caring staff at the Santa Fe Care Center for taking care of Cornelio the last 11 months of his life. Also, we would like to acknowledge Odyssey Hospice for their kindness and support the last month of Cornelio’s life. Serving as pallbearers, Manuel Herrera Jr., Chris Garcia, Lisa Rivera, Danny Martinez, Patrick Herrera and Sandra Lopez. Honorary pallbearers are: Larry Herrera, Gabriel Herrera, Luben and Maria Espinoza, Bobby Flores and all of his grandchildren. Reception will be held after the burial at the Parish Hall at Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe Church in Pojoaque. The family of Cornelio Herrera Sr. has placed their trust in DeVargas Funeral Home of the Española Valley.

Ernest A. Vigil

Age 68, a resident of Chamita passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, Conce and Fidelita Vigil; brother, Ben Vigil; and mother-in-law, Lena Dominguez. Ernest is survived by his son, Matthew Vigil of Chamita; daughter, Pamela Vigil of La Mesilla; grandchildren, Gabriel Vigil and Cheryl Vigil, both of Santa Fe, Cassondra Vigil of Española, Tommy Padilla and wife Martina of La Villita and Veronica Padilla of Hernandez; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mabel Duran of El Llano, Corinne Martinez of Santo Niño, Donella Herrera of Sombrillo, Priscilla Martinez of N. McCurdy Rd., Gloria V. Martinez and husband Harold of Santo Niño, Yvonne Vigil of Albuquerque; sister-in-law, Carmen Vigil and many other relatives and friends. Assisting as pallbearers will be Tommy Padilla, Gabriel Vigil, Manuel Martinez Jr., Frank Dominguez Jr., Joe Archuleta, and Harold Martinez Sr. Honorary pallbearers are Arnold Padilla, Mark Mascareñas, and Fred Flores Jr. The family of Ernest A. Vigil has placed their trust in DeVargas Funeral Home of the Española Valley.
