Mrs. Francisca "Quica" Almeida de Garcia, born January 15, 1923, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully at home in the arms of her loving family on February 29, 2000. Mrs. Garcia was the beloved wife of 49 years to Mr. Sabro Garcia. She is also survived by one daughter, Irma Johnson and husband, Vervon; two sons, Joaquin "Jake" Garcia and Oscar Garcia and wife, Jeanette; one brother, Moises Almeida and wife, Sofia; grandchildren, Justin, Marisol, Adrian, Erik and Jennifer; many nieces, nephews, and a circle of close friends. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Manuel Almeida, Efrian Almeida; sisters, Concha Alemida Valverde and Socorrito Alemida Maestas. Joe (Jose) E. Griego passed away on Monday, February 28, 2000 in Albuquerque. He is survived by his children, Eustacio Griego, Frank Griego and wife, Mary, Sara Griego and Joe Griego. John F. "Jack" Haley, age 79, a resident of since August 1961, died February 29, 2000. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Francis Brown and Margaret Crossman. He is survived by his wife, Hilda Irene; sons, John Haley and wife, Pamela, James Haley of California; daughter, Karen and husband, Jim Bonillo of New Jersey; grandchildren, Jamie Lynn, Brooke Suzanne, Rachel Ann, Tripper John, Michael James and Taylor Ross. Max G. Hernandez passed away on February 29, 2000. Max was 83, was born on July 4, 1916, and was preceded in death by his son, Dan Hernandez. He is survived by his wife of 64 years of marriage, Virginia (Virgie); sons, Salomon (Sal) Hernandez, Albert and his wife, Geri Hernandez, Michael and wife, Anna Hernandez, Martin Hernandez, all of Albuquerque; also Ross Hernandez of Arcadia, CA, and Andrew Hernandez of St. Louis, MO; daughters, Theresa Ramirez and husband Larry, and Cathy Mirabal and husband Mike, all of Albuquerque; his brothers, Alfonso, Salomon and Ben Hernandez, all of Albuquerque; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Max was an Albuquerque native and a pioneer Old Town resident. He was retired from the US Postal Service, where he was mail handler. He was known as "Amigito" and "Smiley ". Upon retirement he also worked for the NM State Fair Police as security in the Hobby building. Max was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Philippines, he received various commendations. He was a great boxing fan and won a Golden Glove Boxing trophy in his youth. He was an usher at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where he served as captain at the Noon Mass for many years. Robert W. "Bob" Jacobson, a resident of Albuquerque since 1997, died Tuesday, February 22, 2000. Carmen Olivas, 74, a resident of Long Beach, CA and formerly of the Espanola Valley, passed away in California on Monday, February 28, 2000, following a lengthy illness. Ruth Alicia Sandoval, 69, of Las Cruces and formerly of Albuquerque, entered eternal life Tuesday, February, 29, 2000 at R.E. Thomason General Hospital in El Paso, Texas. She was born February 4, 1931 in Guayaquil, Ecuador to Luis and Emma Jacome Espinoza. Ms. Sandoval was a homemaker and member of Unity School of Christianity. Survivors include three daughters, Anna J. Sandoval-Vail and her husband, Roger of Oberursel, Germany, Ruth A. Sandoval of Arlington, VA, Zonia E. Davidson and her husband, Tim of Las Cruces; her step-parents, Arturo and Rosa Rael of New York City, NY; two sisters, Ilma Rodriguez of Quito, Ecuador and Josefina Baquero of Miami, FL; other survivors include her loving companion, Corazon; her former husband, Alfredo Sandoval of Valparaiso, Chile; eight grandchildren, Brandon Vail, Shawna Carpenter, Shelley Fontenot, Alejandro Ruiz, Alina Davidson, Adrian Ruiz, Victoria and Joshua Vail; four great-grandchildren, Shane Carpenter, Hannah Fontenot, Alejandro Vail and Rebecca Fontenot. She was preceded in death by her parents. Graveside services for Mary Elizabeth Tankersley, of Albuquerque, who died Monday, February 28, 200, will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 4, 2000 at Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, Kansas, with Jesse Snow, North Baptist Church, Ottawa, officiating. She will lie in state at the Dengel & Sons Mortuary, Ottawa, Kansas after 6:00 p.m., Thursday, to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday evening. Mrs. Tankersley was born July 20, 1912 at Princeton, Kansas, the daughter of Earl Wilford and Bessie (Hardin) Johnson. She spent most of her life in Franklin County, Kansas, except for eight years in Alamosa, Colorado, and the last six years in Albuquerque, living with her daughter, Margaret and her family. Mary graduated from Princeton High School with the class of 1930 and spent two years in nursing school at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. She operated the first rural licensed nursing home in Franklin County at her home just south of the city limits of Princeton. Later, she was administrator of the first Cedar House, at 3rd and Cedar, Ottawa, for Dr. C.W. Henning for three years until it was closed, and she became the first administrator of the new county owned Crestview Nursing Home on West 7th Street Terrace, Ottawa, when it opened in 1959. Mary was awarded the Nursing Home Administrator of the Year by the Kansas Nurses Association in 1960. She retired from the Crestview Nursing Home in January of 1972. Mary continued working at Ransom Memorial Hospital and retired in 1974. On March 8, 1932, Mary was united in marriage with Seth C. Tankersley at Leavenworth, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 9, 1951. Also preceding her in death are her parents; one step-son Eugene Tankersley, April 22, 1988; one step-daughter, Norvella Tinsley, September, 1999; one brother, George Earl Johnson, October, 1943; one sister, Pauline Vollmar, October, 1999; four infant grandchildren; one step-grandson, Victor J. Perry, January, 1968; four sons-in-law, Albert Perry, July, 1953, Bill J. King, September, 1972, Elroy Kaub, February, 1999, and Walter F. Atkerson, October, 1999. Surviving are two daughters, Margaret Atkerson, Albuquerque, Dorothy Kaub, Bailey, CO; seven grandchildren; 17 step-grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
George Layton Trimble Jr., Lieutenant Colonel, (retired), passed away on Sunday, February 27, 2000. He was born in Adairsville, Georgia in 1921, the son of George L. Trimble and Ruby May Scott Trimble. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Dibby" Routh Trimble, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James E. Routh Jr. of Atlanta; two sons, Major (retired) George Layton Trimble III and his wife, Diane and Colonel James Routh Trimble; four grandchildren, George Layton Trimble IV, Christina Yaworsky, Samuel James Trimble and Stephen Joseph Trimble; and two great-grandchildren, Alexandria and Justin Trimble. He attended Emory University and received a Master's degree from the University of Southern California. He was a veteran of three wars and spent 29 years in the United States Air Force, the last twenty of which involved nuclear weapons testing, operations and safety. He had the distinction of being the bombardier who dropped more live atomic test weapons during the 1950's than any other person in the USAF. For this he received the Legion of Merit decoration. After retirement from the USAF in 1970, he was employed by the United States Atomic Energy Commission, where he worked for 13 years as a Nuclear Weapons Safety Analyst. He was a Deacon in the Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church, a member of the American Legion, Air Force Association, British Air Museum and Sigma Nu fraternity. He was a sports enthusiast, and an ardent Atlanta Braves fan. He loved the great outdoors, camping, fishing and gardening. He also was an amateur genealogist and published a book of his anecdotes from the nuclear testing period of his career. A memorial service will be held at the Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church at 1:00 p.m. on March 3, 2000. His remains will be interred at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. Charles "Van" P. Van Ausdal, 87, passed away February 29, 2000. He was born in Eaton, Ohio and retired as a Civilian Personnel Director at Kirtland Air Force Base in 1968. Marvin Baggett Jr., 75, passed away on February 27, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Reeva Sue; brother, Bill; sister, Beulah; son, Marvin; daughter, Rita; granddaughter, Gretchen; and their families. A country lawyer for 35 years, Marvin will be remembered for his generous heart, fierce determination and sage advice. He taught us the importance of family and to nourish our independent spirit. He will be sorely missed by family and friends, until we meet again someday.

Georgia Hartman Bird, 101, a resident of Albuquerque since 1947, died on Tuesday, February 27, 2001. She is survived by her daughters, Irene Squires and husband Bill of Enid, OK, Norma Brewster and husband, Vernon of Albuquerque, and Wilma Sullivan of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Patricia Eubank, Laura Wallin and husband, Scott, and Lee Ann Sullivan; grandsons, Bob Squires and wife, Carolyn, David Squires and wife, Nancy, Steve Brewster, and Mike Sullivan and wife, Ruth; by ten great-grandchildren and by great-great twins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pat on November 29, 1977. Georgia was born February 5, 1900 to John and 'Lottie' Hartman on a farm 5 miles north of Breckenridge, Oklahoma that had been homesteaded by her father in 1893. She married Pat Bird on October 16, 1921 and the couple had three daughters. Georgia was a member of Central United Methodist Church and was an avid rug hooker and China painter. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. We will all miss her, but it's comforting to know she is at peace with God in Heaven. Mae Rose Bright, 77, an Albuquerque resident since 1950, died Tuesday, February 27, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Sue Bentz and husband, John of Albuquerque. Her husband, Ben H. Bright and a son, David Lee Bright preceded her in death. Mrs. Bright was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church where she served in many ways; her greatest love was working with children. She taught elementary school in Illinois and New Mexico for many years, retiring from Albuquerque Public Schools. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother. Ray Corkran, age 86, died at home Thursday, March 1, 2001 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Alberta; daughters, Rajeane Jack and husband, J.T, Nan Hamner and husband, Jay, all of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Kristy Waldraff and husband, Rick and Kara Nixon and husband, Steve, all of Abilene, TX; grandson, Jim Jack and wife, Kimberly of Arlington, TX; and six great-grandchildren, Michael Nixon, Christopher Nixon, Bradley Waldraff, Matthew Waldraff, Alex Jack and Avery Jack. He came to Albuquerque in 1935 to attend the University of New Mexico where he met Alberta Headley, his wife of 63 years. He was employed by the Employment Security Commission as Office Manager and Supervisor of Benefits. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in New Guinea and the Philippines. After his military service, he joined the Veterans Administration as Loan Examiner. He became Chief of the VA Loan Guaranty Program in 1960, and continued as Loan Guaranty Officer until his retirement in 1982, after 36 years of service. Commendations were received from the Mortgage Banking and Real Estate Organizations. Private Family Services will be held Sunday, with Rev. Fred Dorisse officiating. Alice Grace Gallegos, age 55, while surrounded by her loving family passed on to be with our Lord, on Wednesday, February 28, 2001. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roman and Leonela Jaramillo. She is survived by her sons, Kenny Gallegos, Scott Gallegos, and his wife, Dawn, Mitchell Gallegos, Jerod Gallegos and their father, Michael Gallegos; her brothers, Mel Jaramillo and his wife, Bessie, Lambert Jaramillo and his wife, Beatrice, Alex Jaramillo; her sisters, Toni Garcia and her husband, Ernest, Priscilla Montoya and her husband, Porfiro, Connie Jaramillo, Gloria Garcia and her husband, Lorenzo; 11 nephews and six nieces. Alice was born June 16, 1945 in Long Beach, CA. Moved to Canyon, NM in 1947 where she grew up and graduated from Jemez Valley High School. The Rosary will be held on Friday, March 2, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. and the Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow. Pallbearers are her nephews Randy Jaramillo, Johnny Jaramillo, Johnathan Garcia, Martin Montoya, Albert Jaramillo, Joe Garcia with Honorary Pallbearers Ronnie Montoya and Martin Jaramillo.
