Fred P. Mandel, age 89, a resident of Albuquerque for 28 years died October 9, 2001. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Opal Mandel of Albuquerque, NM; daughters, Cindy Speegle and husband, Steven of NM, Barbara Bluhm of Mayfield Heights, Ohio; sons, Mark Mandel of TX, Daniel Mandel of CA; sister, Sylvia Moon of UT; grandchildren, Tracy Martin of Ohio, Evan Speegle of NM; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Martin and Jamie Martin. His brothers, Arthur, Victor, David, Herman and Burton Mandel precede Fred in death. Visitation will be Wednesday October 9, 2001 from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Strong-Thorne Mortuary 1100 Coal Ave SE. Service will be Thursday October 10, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. in the Palm Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary with the Rev. Lynda Dyer officiating. Interment will follow in Santa Fe National Cemetery. Strong-Thorne Mortuary is in charge of Fred's arrangements.

Mrs. Priscilla Marquez died Tuesday, October 9, 2001 in Albuquerque at the age of 46. Mrs. Marquez is survived by her husband, Jesus Marquez; children, Ruben Escobedo and wife, Lisa, Anna Chavez and husband, Charles, Charlene Alvillar and David Gonzales, Joe Alvillar and wife, Charla, and Jessica Lopez, all of Albuquerque; brothers, Barney (Nego) Lopez and wife, Shirley of Tijeras, Elias Lopez and wife, Barbara of Albuquerque, and John Lopez and wife, Maria of Los Lunas; sisters, Patsy Lopez of Los Lunas and Amy Chavez and husband, Tibo of Albuquerque; six grandchildren; and one on the way. Funeral Services for Mrs. Marquez will be held on Saturday at St. Anne Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Belen Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Barney Lopez, Jessica Lopez, Tonio Lopez, Edmundo Marquez, Ruben Escobedo and Anthony (Wuee) Lopez. Honorary pallbearers will be Elias Lopez, Charles Chavez and Victor Marquez. Visitation for Mrs. Marquez will be held on Thursday and Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. in the Salazar & Sons Mortuary Chapel. Mel Micklevitz, 77, a resident of Albuquerque since 1964, passed away on October 9, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara Micklevitz of the family home; sons, David Micklevitz of Roswell, NM and Dale Micklevitz and wife, Deanne of Nebraska; daughter, Lori Schreiber of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Amber Wiggins and husband, David, David Micklevitz Jr. and wife, Mistie, Christopher Micklevitz and wife, Tara, Anthony Micklevitz, Jennifer Bach and husband, Clinton, Michelle Ross, Jason Ross and fiancé, Celina and Melanie Schreiber; great-grandchildren, Stephen, Stephanie, Jordan, Jessica, Ivy, Clayton and Chase; brothers, Laverne Micklevitz and wife, Shirley and Eugene Micklevitz; father in law, George Nickel. He is also survived by his favorite dog, "Poco ". He was in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. Melvin was a homebuilder and realtor here in Albuquerque for more than 20 years. Augius "Aug" Narbutas, 53, a resident of Albuquerque for 30 years, died Saturday, October 6, 2001, at his home in Placitas. He is survived by his parents, Anthony and Ona Narbutas; and brother, Paulius Narbutas and wife, Dalia Narbutiene, all of Albuquerque. He is also survived by many cousins in Lithuania and America; and his close friends, Kelly Cosandaey and Barry Svalberg. Mr. Narbutas served the State of New Mexico for 25 years, retiring as a Cabinet Deputy Secretary. Mass will be celebrated Saturday, October 13, 2001, at 10:00 a.m., at Prince of Peace Catholic Community, 12500 Carmel Avenue NE, with Father Antonio Mondragon, Celebrant. C. Shaw Ordell, 75, formally of Rio Communities, passed away on October 8, 2001. He was a former member of the Saint Philip's Episcopal Church, Tierra Del Sol Country Club, and is a 32nd Degree Mason. Ordell was also a lifetime member of the Elks and was a current member of the Belen Elks Lodge. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Marlene of Monticello, UT; his two loving daughters, Ellen Reeves and her husband, Anton of Shawnee, OK, and Lori Needham and her husband, Michael of Grinnell, IA; five grandchildren; Kristen Christopher, James Owen, Kara Reeves, Julie Barrett, and Michael Reeves; and two great-grandchildren, Morgan and Moriah Christopher. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2001 at the Saint Philip's Episcopal Church in Rio Communities. Romero Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Johnny Padilla, 46, beloved son, brother and uncle, went home to be with Lord on October 10, 2001. He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Padilla; and three brothers, Joe, Lawrence and Robert Padilla. He is survived by his mother, Trinnie Padilla of the home in Belen, New Mexico; three brothers, Phillip and wife, Martha, Michael Padilla of Belen, and Anthony and wife, Anna Padilla of Albuquerque; nine sisters, Tina Gallegos, Eileen and husband, Ray Ornales, Annabelle and husband, Trinnie Perea, Lisa Padilla and husband, Chris Morales, Angela and husband, Rick Turrietta, all of Belen, Pete Padilla and husband, Pete Padilla, Esther and husband, Johnny Lopez, Cynthia Mares, and Victoria Padilla all of Albuquerque; sister-in-law, Angie Mascarenas of Albuquerque; many nieces, nephews and one special nephew, Santos Padilla. Francis Sanchez Runyon, 79, a resident of Albuquerque, passed on Monday, October 08, 2001 to be with her Lord and Savior. The oldest of six children, Mrs. Runyon graduated from Immaculate Conception High School and attended the Business School Academy in Albuquerque. She returned to Las Vegas, where she was Secretary to the Director of New Mexico State Hospital. Mrs. Runyon also worked at New Mexico Highlands University as Secretary to the Controller. She and her husband moved to Albuquerque where they lived for a few years before moving to Dallas, TX. Mrs. Runyon was working as a Supervisor for Prudential Insurance Company when she retired. She is survived by her brother, Placido L. Sanchez and wife, Carmen of Albuquerque; sisters, Dolores and husband, Edward R. Collins of California, Carmen Lou Vigil of Albuquerque, Emily and husband, Dale Whitmire of Dallas, TX and Julietta A. Olguin of Albuquerque; sisters-in-law, Nan and husband, Gerald Woolam and Judy Kelly, all of Lubbock, TX; eight nieces; and nine nephews. She was preceded in death by her partner in life, Bruce Runyon; and parents, Placido and Mary Sanchez of Las Vegas, NM. Ronald Errol Schmidt, 68, a resident of Albuquerque since 1994, died Tuesday, October 9, 2001, after a battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, of 39 years, Myrtle Lee of Ferriday, Louisiana; and their two daughters, Lisa Lee Schmidt of Dallas, TX and Maria Schmidt Stevens of Albuquerque; and son-in-law, Brent Stevens. He was the loving and cherished grandfather of Hank and Emma Stevens. He is also survived by his older brother, Kenneth Schmidt of New York City, NY. Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, he was a graduate of Fortier High School and Loyola University. He served his country in the Army during the Korean War in Germany as part of the 4th and 10th Med Labs, and attended seven Army reunions over the past 25 years. He worked at LSU Medical School where he met his wife who was also working there. He owned and operated the Cytology Diagnostic Laboratory in New Orleans for 27 years. He was one of the first cytotechnologists in the nation. He also taught the science of cytotechnology to 55 students at Charity Hospital. After retiring from medicine, he worked for his cousins at Lagasse Brothers, and later at a New Orleans cup factory, a job he truly enjoyed. He was an active member of the Lafayette Elementary School Dad's Club and the Broadmoor Improvement Association throughout the 1970's. He was lifelong lover of classical music and had become an excellent cook in his retirement. A prolific artist, he showed his work in a French Quarter gallery for several years, selling numerous paintings. He often made up whimsical stories for his children and grandchildren, and loved to go fishing with one of his best friends, Ted Fuchs. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and especially enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, who lovingly called him "Papa ". A Memorial Service will be held Saturday for family only.

Michael James Sordi, 19, died September 20, 2001 in Albuquerque, NM. Michael was born and raised in Bozeman, MT on August 6, 1982, where he spent his time in the outdoors. He loved to go fishing, hiking, and hanging out with his friends and family. He enjoyed skateboarding, biking, and collecting comic and alien figurines. He was one of the most kind and generous people that you would ever meet and he would help out in anyway he could. He is survived by his mother, Susan Sordi; father, Matthew Barstad; sisters, Jessica and Samantha Sordi; his brother, Brann Linzie; niece, Kali Linzie; nephew, Dante Linzie; grandma, Lucy; aunts, Doriene and Cyndi Sordi; and many friends. He will always be in our hearts and forever missed. May his soul live on. A Memorial will be held Saturday, October 13, 2001, 2:00 p.m. at Hidden Park, off of Carlisle and Lomas. Ruth Mary McMahon Rigby Thomas, age 93 died Monday October 8, 2001 in Albuquerque, NM. Mrs. Thomas was born in Winslow, AZ, and had been a resident of New Mexico since 1914. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and head of the Republican Women's Association of New Mexico; she was also a delegate to the state Republican Convention. Mrs. Thomas was owner of the George H. Thomas Insurance Agency. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Thomas; her daughters, Patsy and Jeri Rigby; sister, Alice King; brother, Buddy McMahon; parents, Joseph and Edith McMahon; and grandson, George Scott Rigby. Mrs. Thomas is survived by her son, Gerald W. Rigby Sr. and wife, Barbara Kidd Rigby of Diamond Head, Mississippi; one sister, Helen Brown of Choctaw, Oklahoma; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and many loved ones and friends. Louis J. Urvanejo passed away Monday, October 8, 2001. He served in the US Marine Corps during World War II, and was a member of the IBEW Local 611 for 54 years. He is survived by his wife, Irene Urvanejo; children, Mary Urvanejo and partner, Joni Thompson, Ricardo Urbanejo and wife, Laura, Alice Padilla and husband, Pateno, Michael Urvanejo, and Vincent Urvanejo and wife, Tamara; six grandchildren, Steven, Jennifer, Matthew, Jacqueline, Jason and Kelly; one uncle, Angelo Urvanejo. Tony S. Velarde, 79, a 50-year resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, October 8, 2001 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sarah M. Velarde of the family home; sons, Steven Velarde and wife, Linda and Joe Velarde and wife, Margaret, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Steven Velarde, Kenneth Velarde, Michelle Velarde, Candace Hale, Tonya Hale, Elena Silva-Velarde, and Melanie Silva-Velarde; brother, Max Velarde and wife, Bernice of Casa Grande, AZ; sister, Carolyn Smith of Casa Grande, AZ; brother, Lambert Velarde and wife, Maria of Flagstaff, AZ; sister Rose Martinez and husband, Joe of Bellflower, CA; and numerous nephews, nieces, and Godchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Johnny, parents, Simon and Genoveva Velarde and brother, Ernest Velarde. Tony was born in Roy, NM. He graduated from high school in Mosquero, NM. Tony then attended New Mexico A&M (NMSU) in Las Cruces. He married Sarah Mascarenas March 6, 1945. They shortly afterwards moved to Santa Fe and then to Albuquerque where he resided until the present. Tony worked as a geologist, throughout New Mexico with the Corps of Engineers and later with the Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation. He retired in 1980. Tony was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent de Paul Society at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in which he was very involved. Tony had a true love for life and his grandchildren. Mary K. Walls died on Sunday, October 7, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Walls, Sr. of Albuquerque; sons, Robert L. Walls, Jr. and wife, Peggy of Albuquerque, Larry Walls of Las Vegas, Nevada and Johnny Walls of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Kelly, David and Leo; and one great grandson, Layne Robert Goreham; and brothers, Bill Allen and Tim Allen, both of Omaha, NE. Louise Lindsay Watts, age 86, died in Albuquerque, on Tuesday, October 9, 2001. Mrs. Watts came of pioneer ancestors and was born in Lindsay, Oklahoma, the town founded by her father. She was a good woman. Mrs. Watts is survived by her husband, Lt. Col William E. Watts; and daughter, Mary W. Whiteman and husband, Daniel; and grandchildren, Matthew, Tess, and Rebecca Whiteman of Melbourne, Australia. Services will be held Saturday, October 13, 2001, at 10:00 a.m., at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum Chapel, 7500 Paseo Del Norte NE, with Chaplain Penault officiating. VERA SUE CATA, 33, of San Juan Pueblo died Monday. She coached basketball at the Ohkay Community School in 1998 and was a former employee of Big Rock Casino and Wal-Mart. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer Ann Cata; and her grandfather, Francis B. Blythe. She is survived by her husband, Juan Isidro Cata of San Juan Pueblo; children Christopher, Teresa and Cody Cata, all of San Juan Pueblo, Karen Cata and companion Victor Perez, both of Santa Fe, Stephanie Cata, and Jeremy Cata, both of Española; mother-in-law, Bette N. Cata; brothers-in-law Albert Raymond Cata and wife Elizabeth, and Clarence Nokusille Cata and wife Pauline, all of San Juan Pueblo; sister-in-law, Margaret Tenero and husband Lloyd of San Felipe Pueblo; and numerous other relatives and friends. RUDOLFO LOPEZ, 81, of Villanueva died Monday following a brief illness. He was born June 1, 1920, to Martin Lopez and Rosalie Sena Lopez in Gonzales Ranch. He married Bersave Baca on Nov. 8, 1943, in Villanueva. He retired in 1989 from the Las Vegas School District where he worked as a custodian for 30 years. He enjoyed ranching and farming. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Villanueva. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Rudolfo Lopez Jr.; and son-in-law, Rudolph Hasty. He is survived by his children Alfredo Lopez Sr. of Gonzales Ranch, and Mary L. Hasty of Tempe, Ariz., Rosalia Maestas and husband Johnny of Santa Cruz, Calif., Evelyn Torres and husband David of Las Vegas, N.M., Maria DiAnna Perea and husband James of Sapello, Lucille White and husband Ross of Albuquerque, David Lopez and wife Diane of California, Marvin Lopez and wife Denise of Albuquerque, Alberto Lopez and wife Annette of Las Vegas, N.M., and Anthony Lopez of Albuquerque; daughter-in-law, Martha L. CLAUDINA M. 'CLAUDIE' MARTINEZ, 72, of Rio Chama died Tuesday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benceslao Martinez; parents, Gavino and Locadia Manzanares; sons Wences and Stephen Martinez; infant grandson, Stephen Martinez; and grandson, Stephen Randy Branch. Larry Alexander, age 56, passed away Saturday, October 5, 2002. He was a resident of Albuquerque. He is survived by his son, Larry Alexander Jr.; sisters, Delois Coats and Clara Bryant; brothers, Earmer Alexander Jr. and Glen Alexander. Visitation and Service will be held at Metropolitan Temple Church of God In Christ, 1120 2nd St. NW., at Mountain Rd. The visitation will be held on Friday, October 11, 2002' from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with the Funeral Service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Pastor L Keith Jones will officiate. Louie Carrillo, 50, went home to be with the Lord on October 9, 2002. He was born on September 6, 1952 in Albuquerque, NM. He is preceded in death by his father, Nick Carrillo Sr.; and brother, Jimmy Carrillo. Louie Carrillo is survived by his mother, Louisa Carrillo; brothers, Nick Carrillo Jr. and wife, Mary, Johnny Carrillo, Ray Carrillo and Joseph Carrillo; sisters, Frances Carrillo, MaryAnn Tenney and husband, John and Jeanette Martinez; nephews, Adrian Carrillo, Gilbert Serna, Rico Montoya, Lawrence Carrillo and Anthony Aragon; nieces, Susie Martinez Beverlie Frazier, Rosebud Carrillo, Kim Baca, Valerie Muldez and Erika Carrillo. Louie will be deeply missed by his loving family. Visitations will be on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Eighth Street Chapel of Garcia Mortuary with a prayer service to follow at 7:00 p.m. Final viewing will be on Saturday morning from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Eighth Street Chapel of Garcia Mortuary. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at the San Felipe De Neri Catholic Church at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow at the San Jose De Armijo Cemetery located at Coors and Arenal. Pallbearers will be Louis Ulivarri, Adan Carriaga, Joseph Carrillo, Rico Montoya, Sean Frazier and Marcus Muldez. Honorary pallbearer will be Lawrence Carrillo. Services are in the care of Garcia Mortuary, 717 Stover Ave. S.W

Larry M. Chavez, 43, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2002. He is survived by his daughter, Natalie Chavez-Lefthand; grandson, Nathan; his mother, Virginia Chavez; father, Manuel Chavez; brother, Leonard Chavez; sister, Myra J. Chavez; nephew, Dominic Chavez; many friends and family members. Preceded in death by his sister, Velma Chavez. Larry was a Christian and is now resting peacefully with our Lord Jesus. Services will be held Saturday, October 12, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. and again on Sunday, October 13, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at Exaulting Jesus, 436 Pennsylvania NE.
