Luther Frank Martinez Sr., 84, loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a resident of Albuquerque since 1933, died Saturday, May 6, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Cordelia Lily S. Martinez of the family home; sons, Luther F. Martinez Jr. and wife, Alice of Albuquerque, Lavern E. Martinez and wife, Francie of Denver, CO, LeRoy D. Martinez and wife, Ines of Mission Viejo, CA and Lemuel L. Martinez of Bernalillo; daughter, Linda G. Alvarado and husband, Robert of Denver, CO; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; brother, David S. Martinez and wife, Virginia of Independence, MO; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends. Mr. Martinez was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence L. Martinez. Mr. Martinez was employed by Sandia National Laboratories for 25 years and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, auto mechanics, remodeling, and was a fan of the Colorado Rockies and the New Mexico Lobos. He was a WWII Army Veteran of the South Pacific, earning a Purple Heart. He was a Member/Deacon of Hoffmantown Baptist Church, East Mesa Civitans, and VFW Post #401. Mr. Pilar Martinez Jr., 64, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his loving family on May 7, 2000. Mr. Martinez was the beloved husband of 39 years to Mrs. Betty Martinez. Mr. Patrick Mathews died Sunday in Albuquerque at the age of 34. Patrick was born in Glenwood Springs, CO and had been a resident of Albuquerque for 20 years. He graduated from Rio Grande High School in 1983. He was preceded in death by his father, Pat Mathews; grandparents, Barney and Irene Romero; and brother, Gilbert Urban. Patrick is survived by his mother, Lorraine Aragon; brothers, Tom Urban and Russell Urban, all of Albuquerque; sisters, Charmaine Mathews and Christina Aragon of Denver, CO, LaVonne Urban of Norfolk, VA, and Renee, Patricia and Lisa Mathews of Glenwood Springs, CO; and caregiver, Randy Valdez. George Miller Matlack, a Los Alamos resident for 51 years, died on Sunday, May 7, 2000. He was born June 14, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Penn., a twin son of Mildred Miller and Allyn Wolcott Matlack. He attended schools in Steubenville, Ohio, until 1935, when he and his brother, David, moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they attended and graduated from East High School in 1939. George graduated from Grinnell College in 1943 with an A.B. degree, then earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the State University of Iowa in 1949. While at Grinnell he met Meredith Madsen; they married in 1943 and had four children. He joined the Iowa Geological Survey as principal chemist in 1943, and worked there until he entered graduate school in 1946. Upon completion of his Ph.D. in 1949, he joined the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory's Analytical Chemistry Group, where he remained until his retirement in 1990. He continued to work with that group as Senior Advisor until 1994. During his career at the laboratory, his contributions were focused on the measurement of actinide elements including plutonium, americium, uranium and other heavy radioactive elements. A recognized authority on plutonium, he served as leader of a project to measure plutonium-238 in heat sources for use in artificial hearts. He also participated in the design and testing of a device to measure the uranium content of large quantities of fuel elements, which he presented at a symposium sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. In recent years, he served as advisor for an archeological dig, working on detecting fossilized dinosaur bones by measuring their natural uranium content. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Professional memberships included the American Chemical Society, American Nuclear Society, New York Academy of Sciences and Iowa Academy of Sciences. A longtime member of the United Church, George joined Trinity-on-the- Hill Episcopal Church in 1998. He was a Master Mason at Pajarito Lodge #66 AF&AM, and a member of Chapter #63, Order of Eastern Star. George took great pleasure in hiking, photography, fly fishing, fly tying, and all kinds of music. He was a member of The Four Fifths folk music group, Los Alamos Choral Society and Los Alamos Sinfonietta. His resonant baritone voice graced the United Church choir for many years. He also participated in Los Alamos Light Opera and the Don Juan Playhouse Group. A widely respected curmudgeon, he was known for his gentle ways of helping resolve difficult situations among people. Preceded in death by his youngest son, Allyn, he is survived by his beloved wife, Meredith; children, Nancy Williams of Logan, Utah, Christine Ward, Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Martin, Cedar Crest, New Mexico; his brother, David Wolcott Matlack of Los Angeles; grandchildren, Elisabeth, Johannah, Patrick, Anna, Jeremy and Nicholas; and great-grandchildren, Luke, Ruth, Ian, Kade and William Allyn. Mrs. Esther Sandoval died Saturday in Albuquerque at the age of 72. Mrs. Sandoval was preceded in death by her sister, Margarita Jaramillo. Denise "Dee Dee" Warchol, 39, a resident of Albuquerque, died following surgery on Friday, May 5, 2000. She was born in Tucson and had lived in Albuquerque since 1997. She is survived by her husband of 11 years, Joe Warchol. He was her soul mate and best friend, just as she was his. She is also survived by sons, Evan Brown and Kristofer Mortensen and daughter, Alex Mortensen of Albuquerque; father, Dennis Mortensen of Tucson, AZ; brothers, Craig Mortensen and wife, Lynne of Phoenix, AZ, Michael Mortensen and wife, Susan, Ben Mortensen of Tucson, AZ; "adopted" sister, Anita Vasquez of Phoenix, AZ; four nieces and three nephews; uncle and aunt, James and Jeannine Nunez of Tucson, AZ. Bowyer Lee Wolfe, 74, longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away on May 7, 2000. KATHRINE BUTLER WHITE FRANCIS, 76, of Los Alamos died Saturday. She worked 22 years in purchasing for Zia Co. She is survived by her husband, William C. Francis; son, Michael Ragsdale and wife Catherine; and grandson, Thomas, all of Los Alamos; a sister; two nieces and a nephew. JOSEPH ANTHONY HICE, 32, of Velarde died unexpectedly on Monday. He was employed by Public Service Co. of New Mexico. He is preceded in death by a brother, Tim Hice. J. MANUEL MAES, 86, of Santa Cruz died Saturday. He was born in Alamosa, Colo., and attended elementary school there before moving to the Espaņola Valley. He graduated from Santa Cruz High School and from Adams State College, Alamosa, Colo., with a bachelor's degree. He received a master's degree from New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, N.M., and did more graduate work at the University of New Mexico. He began his teaching career at Santa Cruz High School while it was a parochial school. He served four years in Europe as a U.S. Army Air Corps meteorologist during World War II. He later spent six months as a civilian establishing air bases in Spain. Afterward, he resumed his career in educaiton and became principal at Santa Cruz, John F. Kennedy and Cuba Junior high schools until his retirement. He was a member of the National Education Association, the New Mexico Education Association and National Association of Secondary School Principals. He was also a member of the Santa Cruz Holy Family Society. He enjoy baseball, basketball and particulary enjoyed ice skating. He was also a mason and a gardener. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramon and Carmelita Maez; and brother, Guillermo Maes. He is survived by his children, Manuel R. Maes of Fairview; George, Matthew and Alfred Maes of Santa Cruz; Eddie Maes and wife, Edna, of Pojoaque; Carmen Gonzales and husband, Rudy, of Santa Cruz, the Rev. ANTONIO J. 'TONY' MONTOYA, 77, of El Rancho died Saturday. He was born June 1, 1922, at San Ildefonso. He was married Oct. 15, 1945, in Santa Cruz to Agnes Herrera. He graduated in 1940 from Pojoaque High School and joined the U.S. Army, where he served with the 19th Combat Engineers of II Corps, 5th Army. He was captured by the German Army at Kasserine Pass, Tunisia, and spent 27 months as a prisoner of war in north Germany before his liberation May 3, 1945. He retired in 1989 from Los Alamos National Laboratory after 35 years service. He was a member of the American Ex-POW Organization and a Purple Heart recipient. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Montoya Ulibarri; great-granddaughter, Jade Smith; mother, Magdalena Montoya; and grandparents, Jose Elfego and Tiburcia Montoya. ANNIE LEE PETERSON of Pinckard, Ala., died Sunday in Santa Fe. She was the daughter of Edward and Ursula Gissendanner. She attended Alabama schools and graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama in 1931. She later taught school in southwest Alabama. She married Alfred J. Peterson in 1942 and moved to New York City, where she lived until 1980. She worked for a number of organizations, including the New York City Mayor's Office. She was a deaconess of Calvary Baptist Church, a prayer secretary and manager of the Baptist Home for the Aged. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Study Club of Midland, Ala. She was a talented musician and played the piano and organ for many years in New York City missions. She is survived by nephews, Edward Arthur of Santa Fe and Robert Stenstrom of Atlanta; niece, Ruby Harley of Sanford, Fla.; and several greatnieces and greatnephews. She will be buried in Alabama. Raymond W. Alt, age 79, passed away Sunday morning, May 6, 2001 at his home in Albuquerque. He is survived by his wife, Helen Alt of Albuquerque; one son, Roger and his wife, Sharon Alt of Albuquerque. Raymond was born in New Jersey and moved to Albuquerque in 1956. He was an officer and detective with the Albuquerque Police Department from 1957 to 1980. He led a local band, "The Lamplighters" from 1962 to 1986. He served as secretary of the musicians union Local # 618. He was a member of Temple Lodge # 6 A.F. & A.M. Mary W. Briault died at her home in Santa Fe on Sunday, May 6, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Nanon Gowin; grandson, Robert and son-in-law Barry, of San Diego; her aunt, Vivian Prock; her sister-in-law, Nitia Worley; her nephews, Dale and Byron Worley; the Briault family in France; her dear friend, Laura Warren, and many other friends. Mary was born in Chicago, graduated from Harvard University in Philosophy, received a graduate fellowship in English at the University of Iowa, and received her teacher certification at Northeastern University. She lived in France for 12 years, where she was a senior editor for a Parisian publishing house. She later had a long teaching career in the Chicago area, moving to Corrales in 1976. There, Mary was co-founder and chef of the Corrales Inn Restaurant, and designed and operated the Corrales Inn Bed and Breakfast, realizing one of her lifelong passions. Mary's cooking brought joy and satisfaction to her, and was enjoyed by others as an exquisite expression of her love. Mary retired and moved to Santa Fe in 1995 where she volunteered, teaching English as a second language, pursued her lifelong love of reading, tended her garden and traveled extensively. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2001 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Santa Fe Funeral Options & Memorial Gardens, 417 East Rodeo Rd, Santa Fe, NM. 989-7032. Lola Dolores Carr entered the church triumphant on Friday, May 4, 2001, following an extended illness. She was born in Indiana on April 19, 1933, to Alton and Ida Ann (Matthews) Carr, who preceded her in death in addition to a sister, Barbara Ann. She graduated from Silver Creek High School in Sellersburg, IN. as Salutatorian of her class in 1951, and was an active member of Speed Memorial Church for many years. She married Donald G. Kempf in September 1951 and together they raised two sons, Richard Alton Kempf of Franklin, TN. and Donald Paul Kempf of Clarksville, TN. In 1979, "Dolores" moved to Albuquerque, NM and in 1985, she married her second husband, Alfred L. Synoground. He preceded her in death in 1991. She retired from her career as a legal secretary in 1992 after having worked more than forty years in that profession. Close personal friends from Albuquerque are Patsy Noel and Pat McCutcheon. In 1995, she moved to Franklin, TN because of health concerns and to be closer to her children. She was known to many for her youthful spirit and exuberant determination to get things done right and by her cane, which she decorated for each season and holiday of the year. In addition to her sons, she is survived by a sister, Jane Chase of Lancaster, TX; two daughters-in-law, Linda Kempf and Anna Kempf; her grandchildren, David, Kevin, Amelia, Timothy, Rachel Kempf, Angela Begley and Laura Bolden. She will be greatly missed by family, friends, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. George L. Dingman, Sr., 86, resident of Albuquerque since 1945 passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2001. He is survived by his children, George L. Dingman Jr. and wife, Myrna of Albuquerque, NM, Charles E. Dingman and wife, Lynn of Greenbelt, MD, and Amy Dingman of Albuquerque, NM; seven grandchildren, Christopher Dingman of Greenbelt, MD, Paul Dingman, Jacob Hodshire, Andrea, Celestina, Joshua, and Leah Garrison all of Albuquerque, NM; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Cordova and Jazmaine Charrette both of Albuquerque, NM. George was preceded in death by his wife, Florence on January 8, 1999. He was a member of the Zia Roamers Chapter of the Good Sam Club; NM Society of Mayflower Descendants; NM State S.A.R.; Albuquerque Chapter S.A.R.; NM Huguenot Society; The Pilgrim John Howland Society; and was a member of the Highland Baptist Church. Friends may visit Wednesday, May 9, 2001 from 4-7 p.m. Services will be held Thursday, May 10, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE with Rev.
