Dorothy M. (Dottick) Kaczorowski, age 87, died Sat. May 1, 1999 in Albuq. "Bud" Harris and friend, Lynette of TorC, David Evans & family of Tulsa, OK, Danny Evans, Hindsville, GA; granddaughters, Lisa and family of Hindsville, GA, Shelly Marshell and family of Dayton, OH, Lori Evans of Bakersfield, CA and great-grand kids. She was a member of VFW Aux at 3370 Moriarty Past Present of 3224 TorC, Past Dist. President of Dist. #3, First Moca Pres of #19 TorC and Las Cruces First Moca Volunteer Rep. at N.M. V.C. TorC. She had over 20,000 vol. hours at the VAMC Albuq. In 1993 she was the outstanding Volunteer at the VFWA, National Conv. for Volunteering at a VA Hospital. A member of the American Legion Aux #74 Moriarty, Past State Pres. of the Letters Carriers Association. Memorial services will be Monday, May 10, 1999 at 12:00 at VFW Post 401. Interment will be at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.
Ina Mae McCallon, 86, passed away May 5, 1999. Born on February 5, 1913 in Dermott, TX to John Ira Burroughs and Cora Runnels. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. McCallon on March 27, 1993. She is survived by her children, James M. McCallon, Patricia Hawkins, Wanda Crews, and Betty Underwood; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Lupe Montoya, 65, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, gently passed away Wednesday, May 5, 1999 at home surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her husband, Paul K. Montoya Sr.; five children, Ella McComas and husband, Don, Valerie Montoya and husband, Ed, Paul K. Montoya Jr. and wife, Mona, Michael Montoya and wife, Rose, Gary Martinez and wife, Mary; eight grandchildren; three brothers, Fabian Martinez, Guillermo Martinez and Filberto Martinez. Guillermo Olguin, 66, left us to be with the Lord on May 8, 1999. He fought a valiant and courageous battle during many months of illness. During that time he was cleansed by the Holy Spirit and continues to live in our hearts. Hilda Spivey Patterson died Thursday, May 6, 1999. Born to Hilda and Tony Reed Spivey July 24, 1924 in Olmstead, Arkansas. Survived by husband, Hubert Patterson; sons, Robert Alan and Thomas Reed Patterson of Albuquerque; and daughter, Dana Jean Patterson Roth, son-in-law, John Albert Roth, grandchildren, Kyndra Anne Patterson Roth and Micah Reed Patterson Roth, all of Placitas; one brother, Thomas Reed Spivey of Tillamook, Oregon; one sister-in-law in Florida; many nieces and nephews in Oregon, Washington, Florida and Maryland; and numerous cousins in California, Arkansas and New Jersey. Predeceased by father, Tony R. Spivey, June 1975; sister, Louise Spivey, November 1990; mother, Hilda Spivey, September 1996, at 95 years; and sister-in-law, Betty Hathaway Spivey, April 20, 1999. Hilda and "Pat" moved to Albuquerque in 1948 from Inyokern, California. Hilda became involved in PTA where she served as Safety Chairman for three years. She spear-headed a program which resulted in enactment of two school safety crossing issues in New Mexico. In 1963, she joined the staff of the Heights YMCA and began 32 years of teaching swimming in both the YMCA and Red Cross programs. Always a catalyst, she taught classes in community and home pools where no classes had been previously offered. She worked with 4-H and neighborhood groups, as well as taking part every summer in the Red Cross Learn-To-Swim campaigns in city pools and in Corrales. Certified as Instructor Trainer in Adaptive Aquatics, she conducted the class for 3 1/2 years at UNM. She taught Adaptive Aquatics seminars at Carlsbad School for the Blind in Alamagordo and at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. When Hilda and Pat moved to Livingston, Tennessee in 1977, after retirement from Sandia Labs, they attended a Red Cross Aquatic school where she became certified as a First Aid instructor and Pat as a Small Craft Instructor. They taught Learn-To-Swim and water safety each summer until 1990. During those years Hilda introduced water safety classes into the local high school, Livingston Academy. Hilda was recognized by the National Safety Council and awarded their appreciation Award, one of 25 presented in the US that year. The following year Red Cross acknowledged her contribution to water safety programs with the prestigious Clara Barton Honor Award for Meritorious Volunteer. Pat and Hilda returned to New Mexico in 1991 where they made their home at Mid-Valley Air Park, Los Lunas enjoying their retirement among an extraordinary group of neighbors. She helped organize the Mid-Valley Women's Association and served as its first president. She and Pat were active in the Experimental Aircraft Association's Young Eagles Program, with its goal of introducing one million young people to aviation by 2003 (the 100 year anniversary of the Wright brother's first, sustained, controlled flight by powered aircraft). Hilda was a caring and devoted mother, wife and friend, with the energy and ability to get things done. She touched the hearts of all the knew her and she will be deeply missed by her family and friends. A gathering for family and friends will be at the home 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 15. Richard Salas, 82, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 6, 1999. He will be missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Lorencita, and their family of seven children, Helen and husband, John, Floyd and his wife, Mary, Gloria and her husband, Bill, Jim, Virginia, Rick, and Julie and her husband, Clif; thirteen grandchildren, John, Paul, Vicki, Vanessa, Michelle, Nicki, Brian, Seth, Philip, Paul, Lorenzo, Cerro and Estrella; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Sally and Belle; and sister-in-law, Isabel. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Lazaro and Trini; and sister, Gregoria. Richard was born in San Juan, NM, to Tranquilino and Cornelia Salas on April 3, 1917. He was a lifelong resident of New Mexico. Richard was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of Our Lady of Annunciation Catholic Church in Albuquerque for 40 years. After dedicating over 50 years to his profession of barbering, he enjoyed many happy years in retirement with his wife, friends, and family. Richard will be missed and always will be remembered by everyone who knew him. Elsie Vittitow-Tanner, 90, a resident of Albuquerque since 1948, died Thursday, May 6, 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 1/2 years, Bennet Meredith Vittitow; and was also preceded in death by her husband of 15 years, Erwin Austin Tanner. She is survived by her son, Richard Vittitow and wife, Linda of Albuquerque; daughter, Jo Anne Rolan-Nichols of Rio Rancho; grandchildren, Jim Everitt, Kenny Everitt of Aztec, NM, Patti Tatman, Danny Vittitow, Darren Vittitow and wife, Kim of Blanchard, OK; great-grandchildren, Wayman Everitt, Chris Everitt, Jay Everitt, Dwight Everitt and Dustin Everitt, Nicole Tatman and Robert Tatman, Richard Vittitow and Drake Vittitow; nephew, Charles Frasure; and niece, Carole Crawford. Macedonio C. (M.C.) Baca, 87, a lifelong resident of Belen, passed on to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 7, 2000, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Our beloved father was born on September 13, 1912 in Belen to Eloisa and Alberto Baca. He was educated in Belen, a graduate of the 1st class of St. Mary School. He started out as a farmer along with his father and went on to become a successful businessman in the community. He was the founder of Baca Oil Co., Baca Auto Sales, Baca Chevrolet, Mt. View Motel, and Whiteway Cafe. He was a member of the original board of directors of Ranchers State Bank. M.C. retired in 198 and spent his remaining years gardening and visiting with his family. He was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church and he and his wife, Angelina served as Padrinos for Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church on two separate occasions. He was also a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus and the League of the Sacred Heart. M.C. was preceded in death by his loving wife, Angelina in 1996. M.C. is survived by his seven loving children, his four daughters, Mary Jane B. Sanchez and her husband, Joe, Elsie B. and Marty Sachs, Margaret Baca and her husband, Ned, Tina Baca and her husband, Mike; three sons, Ruben and his wife, Barbara, Leroy Baca and his wife, Sylvia, Mac Baca Jr. and his wife, Anita; his 25 loving grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; his sister, Emily Moya; his two brothers-in-law, Juan Orona and Frank Orona; one sister-in-law, Melinda Orona. Aurelia Candelaria, 93, died Sunday, May 7, 2000 in Albuquerque. She is survived by her sisters, Eugenia Gerhardt, Louisa Flores and Esther C. Tenorio, all of Albuquerque; brothers, Eurenio Candelaria and wife, Tive of Santa Rosa, CA, Rendolfo Candelaria and wife, Agatha of Amarillo, TX, and Maguin Chavez and wife, Ella of Albuquerque; and many other family, nieces and nephews. Jean Critchfield passed away quietly on May 6, 2000 with family at her side. She and her husband, Charles came to Los Alamos in 1943 to participate in the Manhattan Project during World War II. She is survived by her four children, Lewis and wife, Lili, Robert, Barbara Chang and husband, Bill, Douglas and wife, Judy; eight grandchildren, Yasmin, Tanya, Elizabeth, Valerie, Heidi, Douglas, Lucas, and Jason; and three great grandchildren, Derek, LeAnne, and Kodi. Jean leaves behind many dear friends, including the congregations of both the Unitarian Church and United Church of Los Alamos, and her colleagues in the various clubs and volunteer organizations in which she was active. Her radiant smile, energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm will be sorely missed. These traits and her unfailing optimism and determination whether climbing the East Face of Long's Peak, Colorado or in meeting the challenges of growing old, will continue to be a guide and model for all who knew her. Fayebell T. Farrow, 81, homemaker and resident of Albuquerque, died May 6, 2000 at Sandia Care Center. She was born August 23, 1918 in Clovis to the parents of Claude T. and Muriel Allen Trimm. Faye's working years were spent at First National Bank in the 1940's, and later serving as Secretary-Treasurer at First Federal Savings and Loan in Clovis for 28 years. Service to others was a priority and she served two terms as President of the Pilot's Club in Clovis and held a district office as well. She also served as Coordinator for the Clovis Meals on Wheels program and delivered meals to shut-ins for many years. Faye was a charter member of Kingswood Methodist Church in Clovis, where she was very active, helping in the office and preparing the communion service for many years. She attended Central United Methodist Church in Albuquerque for nearly two years. She was a person of great love, energy and strength, and leaves a large void in the lives of those who loved her. Faye and her husband, George Alva Farrow lived in Belen for many years before moving to Clovis. More recently Faye had moved to Albuquerque to be near to her children. She will be remembered with much love as Mom. Grandmothering was her specialty and she spent many hours planning and enjoying outings and travel with her grandchildren and later her great-grandchildren. She will be loving remembered as Grandmommy. Faye was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Leo Trimm; and husband, George Alva Farrow. She is survived by her son, Dick Farrow and wife, Judy of Belen; daughter, Frances Boldt of Albuquerque; sisters, Clela Crawford and husband, Gordon of Bullhead City, AZ; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Martha E. Garcia, 56, a longtime Vaughn, NM resident, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque following an illness. Mrs. Garcia was born March 20, 1944 in Mosquero, NM to the home of Flugencio Baca and the former Monica Martinez. She was reared at Pastura and Vaughn, where she attended school. She married Luperto Garcia on June 9, 1969 in Santa Rosa. She was a member of St. Mary's Parish in Vaughn, NM. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Mike Baca in 1988; and an infant sister, Pauline Baca. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Survivors include her husband, Luperto Garcia of the home in Vaughn; two sons, Jessie L. Garcia and fiancee, Venus of Albuquerque, Eric Garcia of Vaughn; two brothers, Benjy Baca and Abenacio Baca of Vaughn, and Helen B. Garcia of Tucumcari. Samuel Gibanica, 84, passed away May 6, 2000. He retired as an Army Lt. Colonel after serving his country for 30 years. He worked as an automotive salesman, receiving awards from Mercedes and Cadillac. He was a devoted husband, father and "Papa" who dearly loved his family. He is survived by wife of 69 years, Evelyn Gibanica; children, Diane G. Deflon-Ray and husband, James, Stephen C. Gibanica and wife, Judy; grandson, Eric C. Deflon; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Victoria Deflon; extended family and friends who loved and will miss him. Josephine Iglio, 93, a resident of Rio Rancho, residing at Acantilado Vista Retirement Community, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2000. Josephine was born July 18, 1906, the daughter of Angelo and Josephine Leone Sgammato in Brooklyn, New York. She did hand sewing for a clother in New York before retiring. Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Domenico in 1972. She is survived by four children, Tony Iglio and his wife, Arlene of Alameda, Charles Iglio and wife, Frances of Ozark, MO, Mechela Dicks of Virginia, Josephine Horton of Georgia; two brothers, Charles and Louis Sgammato of New York; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Jennie S. Lathrop passed away Sunday, May 7, 2000 at Lovelace Medical Center. She had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1952, residing in La Vida Llena Retirement Community since 1990. Jennie was born in Fayetteville, AR on July 21, 1912. She married Loyt Lathrop in 1933 while both were attending Kansas State College (now University) in Manhattan, KS. During WWII, Jennie served as a civilian employee of the Army Signal Corp. She first received her amateur radio operator's license in 1937 and was active as W5YSJ until 1988. During that time, she assisted with communications between their families and the scientists and military personnel stationed in Antarctica and Greenland. Jennie made her community better through her service as scout leader, school volunteer, church volunteer and volunteer for many other community activities. She is survived by her husband, Loyt Lathrop; her son, Kenneth; her daughter, Wendy Manzo; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her infectious smile and cheerful attitude will be missed by all who knew her. J. Manuel Maes, age 86, a resident of Santa Cruz, passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2000, due to a lengthy illness. Mr. Maes was born in Alamosa, CO and received his elementary education there before moving to the Espanola Valley, where his grandparents lived. He graduated from Santa Cruz High School and received a BA degree from Adams State College in Alamosa. Mr. Maes was awarded an MA degree in Secondary School Administration from Highland's University in Las Vegas and did further graduate work at the University of New Mexico. Following his college work at Adams State, he began his teaching career at Santa Cruz High School when it was a Catholic Parochial School. He taught there two years before entering the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served four years in the European Theatre during World War II as a meteorologist. He later spent six months in Spain as a civilian, helping to establish air bases in that country. Upon returning to the states he resumed his 30 plus year career in education and administration. He taught further at Santa Cruz High and later became principal, as well as at John F. Kennedy and Cuba Junior High Schools until his retirement. He was loved by countless students and colleagues. He was a member of the National Education Association, The New Mexico Education Association, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Mr. Maes was a member of the Santa Cruz Holy Family Society. An avid sports enthusiast, he enjoyed baseball and basketball, and particularly ice skating. His other hobbies were masonry work and gardening. His mind was sharp to the end as he often recalled train rides on the Cumbres from Alamosa to Espanola, as well as many other experiences from his youth. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramon and Carmelita Maez; his wife, Maria E. Maes; two sons, Bobby and Eugene Maes; and one brother, Guillermo Maes. He is survived by his children, Manuel R. Maes of Fairview, GA, Matthew and Alfred Maes, all of the home, Eddie Maes and wife, Edna of Pojoaque, Carmen Gonzales and husband, Rudy of Santa Cruz, Rev. Fr. Clarence Maes of St. Anne's Parish, Santa Fe, and Anthony Maes of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Damon Paul Maes (whom he raised), Chris R. Maes, Yvonne, Arthur and Jerome Quintana, Alicia Gonzales and Ramona Salazar; three great-grandchildren, Desiree Quintana, Benito Maestas Jr. and Raylynn Quintana and one due in May. Rosaries will be recited on Monday evening, 7:00 p.m., at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Espanola. A second Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, 5:00 p.m., at Santa Cruz de la Canada. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, on Tuesday, May 9, 2000 at the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2000 at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Canada. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Damon Maes, Chris Maes, Arthur and Jerome Quintana, Rudy Gonzales, Brock and Mike Salazar. Honorary pallbearers named are Yvonne Quintana, Alicia Gonzales, and Ramona Salazar. The family of J. Joe Arthur Maestas, 70, born July 24, 1929 in Dixon, NM, he joined God May 6, 2000. He is survived by his loving wife, Taeko; daughters, Mary Jo Russell, Kathy Looney and husband, Joseph; grandchildren, Jennifer, Robyn, Mary Kate, Jake; sisters, Connie Griego, Lucy Sargent and husband, Chuck; brother, Rudy and wife, Eileen. He loved and was loved by many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren and friends. He served 26 years in the Air Force, 18 years in Civil Service, an active member of Holy Ghost Parish, a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, and a member of American Legion Post 49. Memorial services will be held at Holy Ghost Church with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2000, Mass at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2000.
