Ray Herman Chambers, 74, passed away at the Albuquerque, V.A. Hospital on June 18, 2001. He was a resident of Albuquerque for 47 years and was a principal partner in the Engineering Firm of Chambers, Campbell, Isaacson and Chaplin. The firm did engineering and architectural work for the States of New Mexico and Arizona. Ray was an officer in the Army Corp of Engineers during World War II. He graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO and was outstanding in athletics and took 2nd place in the high jump in the NCAA Tournament. He also lettered in basketball and track. Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Alice I. Dahl. He is survived by his wife, Oueta B. Chambers; four daughters, Christine Caton and husband, Scott, of Alamosa, CO, Diana Bisbee and husband, Hexamer, of Springdale, AR, Lisa Chambers of Boulder, CO, and Katrina Wood of Albuquerque, NM; stepson, Bill McAfee of Topeka, KS; brother, Thomas Alden Chambers and wife, Marilynn, of Spring City, TN; sisters, Patsy Stein and husband, Jack of Prescott, AZ, and Linda Waugh and husband, Max, of Albuquerque, NM; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He retired to the Four Hills area and enjoyed life watching his grandchildren grow up, golf and hunting. Ray was a member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. No Service will be held. Cremation has taken place and the remains will be interred at his ranch in Colorado. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice.

Newell Eastburg, 74, a resident of Albuquerque since 1952 and was born in Iowa, died on Tuesday, June 19, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Barbara Eastburg; daughters, Linda Eastburg of Denver and Gwen Eastburg and husband, Jim Lowrey and son, Zachary Guay; son, Randy Eastburg and wife, Lisa and children, Bradley Bowling and Brooke Eastburg; sister-in-law, Chloe Eastburg and daughter, Tena Eastburg and numerous relatives in Western, KS. Newell entered the Army in the Costal Artillery Unit in WWII at the age of 17. That where he gained experience in the printing business. And remained in the printing business for 57 years and finished his career for Starline Printing where he worked for many years. He met his beautiful wife in Denver, Colorado where they married, there after moved to Albuquerque, NM to start their family. He was a member of the Hoffmantown Church and loved going to horse races and going to his sons car lot. Newell also loved sporting events especially those that his children and grandchildren were involved in. Services will be held on Friday, June 22, 2001, 10:30 a.m. at French Mortuary, Westside Chapel, 9300 Golf Course Road N.W., with Pastor Jim Williams, officiating. Tony V. Gallegos, 83, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, died Monday, June 18, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Hafiza Hindi Gallegos; and daughter, Bonita C. Fenn. Children include sons, Richard and wife, Nancy, Anthony and wife, Diana, Jimmy and wife, Vicki; daughters, Theresa Easley and husband, Robert, Carla Gallegos and husband, Jason Robertson, all of Albuquerque; Clare Lunsted and husband, Ron of Aurora, CO; 23 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; (to whom he was better known as Tata); sisters, Jenny Tapia of Albuquerque and Helen Garner of Las Vegas; and several nieces, nephews and many other relatives. Tony became a professional boxer in his teens after winning the Golden Gloves Championship. Later he moved his family to the bay area of California where he worked in the Marin County shipyards as a foreman. He finished his career of 29 years with the federal government working both in Los Alamos and Albuquerque. His hobbies included fishing, traveling, building and an occasional gambling trip with his wife and children. Tony was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed by all. Mass will be celebrated Friday, 10:00 a.m., at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum Chapel, 7500 Paseo Del Norte NE., with Father Antonio Mondragon, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Jason Gallegos, Chris Gallegos, Steven Easley, Jay Easley, Shaun Gallegos and Dennis Gallegos. Joseph Lawrence Hart, 97, a resident of Albuquerque since 1989, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2001. He was born in Las Vegas, NM, the son of Dennis and Eva Hart. Joe worked in Las Vegas for the Meadows Hotel, the Santa Fe Railroad, Charles Ilfeld Co., and retired from the City School System in 1971, having served as Superintendent of Maintenance. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; one sister; and his wife, Martha. In 1961, he married Doris Dowler, who died in 1994. Joe is survived by his step-children, Mary Jane Miller of Hobbs, NM, Phyllis Dowler of Albuquerque, NM, and Keith Dowler of Rio Rancho, NM. From these step-children, Joe had six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Private interment will be held at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Las Vegas, NM. Ferdinand A. Koch, Jr., 77 a resident of Albuquerque for many years, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2001. Immediate relatives preceding him in death were his parents, Ferdinand A. Koch and Kathleen Long Koch; and brother, Robert Koch. He is survived by his brothers, Charles E. Koch of Midland, TX, W. Christian Koch and James H. Koch of Santa Fe. Ferdinand was stationed in England during World War II as an Army Air Corp, armament gunner. He won the Bronze Star while participating in the European air offensive. Interment took place on Thursday, June 21, 2001 at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Mary Lou Lovato, 66, a resident of Bernalillo for 27 years, died on Wednesday, June 20, 2001. She is survived by her children, Ben Lovato, Victoria Priscilla Baca and husband, Richard, Epifanio, Jr., Nick, David, Victor, Albino and Martin; 17 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, two great-great grandbabies and many stuffed animal puppies. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Epifanio Lovato; sons, Jose Luis Lovato; and grandson, Gilbert Jaramillo. She was a dedicated mother and wife to her husband and seven sons. Mary Lou has several hobbies that she loved such as cooking, sewing and car racing. She was a member of the Bernalillo Independent Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be, Richard N. Baca, Joe Jaramillo, Raymond Jaramillo, John Jaramillo, Steve Saiz, Tim Marienau and Tony Martinez. Honorary Pallbearers will be Albino Lovato, Victoria J. Mary L. Lucero was called by the Lord on June 20, 2001. She was born on December 31, 1905 in Los Alamitos, NM. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Victoria Sanchez and Estella Lucero; and brother, Abel Lucero. Mary retired from Albuquerque Public Schools in the early 70's. She is survived by her special niece, Angie Sandoval and husband, Al; brother, John Lucero and wife, Abelina; special brother-in-law, Luis Lucero; sisters, Elvira Gonzales and Agneda Lucero; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Funeral Services for Mary will be held on Saturday at St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Ian Mill, an East Mountain resident for over 20 years, died Monday, June 18, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen of Tijeras; son, John; and granddaughter, Neah, of the Washington D.C. area. Vasthi Nylander St. John, 92, a resident of Albuquerque since 1940, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001. She is survived by her sons, Raymond H. St. John and wife, Carol of Franktown, CO and Richard H. St. John and wife, Bouncheua of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Sara St. John, Katie St. John, both of Franktown, CO, Sengdhaun St. John, Phoy St. John, both of Albuquerque and Philip St. John of Portland, OR. DIANE BESSER, 59, of Santa Fe died Wednesday. She was born and raised in Harrison, Ark. She received her bachelor's degree in music from Northwestern University and studied music at the graduate level in Vienna, Austria. She moved to Santa Fe, along with her husband Sandy, in 1997. She supported various local arts organizations, including the Museum of New Mexico and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. She was a member of the Folk Art Museum Committee at the Museum of International Folk Art. She also served on the board of directors of the Spanish Colonial Arts Society and as a member of the Museum Council of the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art. She is survived by her husband, Sandy of Santa Fe; sons, Matthew, and Grant and wife Alex; grandchildren Cole and Carson; and numerous friends. LOUIE A. MARTINEZ, 28, of Espaņola died Friday following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his mother, Patsy Gurule. He is survived by his father, Arthur Martinez of Espaņola; sisters Becky Mondragon of Espaņola, and LaVerne Mondragon of North Carolina; special niece and nephew Felicia Jaillet, and Jesus Mondragon; maternal grandfather, Raymond Gurule of Idaho; godparents Leroy and Lenora Herrera of Espaņola; and numerous other relatives and friends. ALLAN F. JOHNSTON, 58, of Los Alamos died Friday following a brief illness. He was born Nov. 22, 1942, in Pawhuska, Okla. He received both his bachelor and master's degrees in mathematics, in 1965 and 1970 respectively, from the University of Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965 through 1967. He worked for Arthur A. Anderson and Union Carbide before joining Pacific Northwest Laboratories, Richland, Wa., in 1980 as chief financial officer and controller. He moved to Los Alamos in 1993 where he accepted a position as controller and chief financial officer at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He also enjoyed his tenure as president of the LANL Foundation and did all he could to help improve the lives of young people in northern New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Johnston; and his mother-in-law, Elvira O'Neil. He is survived by his wife Suzanne; children David, Christy and Jeffrey; mother, Ferol Johnston; sister, Luana and husband Larry Dickerson of Okmulgee, Okla. and their three children Kellie, Bob and Brooke; father-in-law, John O'Neil of Gearhart, Ore.; his wife's aunt, Yvonne O'Neill of Los Alamos; grandson, Troy; and Kellie's two sons, Robert and Nathan. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church in Los Alamos. There will be a reception after the service at the church. TOMASITA 'TOMMIE' MARTINEZ, 53, of Chimayo died June 15 following a lengthy illness. She was a member of the Sociedad de la Sagrada Familia, the Carmelitas de Nuestra Seņora de Carmel, and the Holy Family Parish of Chimayo. She worked as a secretary for the Chimayo Elementary School for 22 years. She was preceded in death by her father, Amarante Trujillo; brother, Bonifacio Trujillo; and sister, Rita Trujillo. She is survived by her husband, Prescillano Martinez of Chimayo; sons Dwayne Martinez and wife Angel, Jeff Martinez and companion Patricia Romero, Prescilliano Martinez Jr. and companion Ida Fernandez, all of Chimayo; brothers Johnny Trujillo and wife Gebi of Chimayo, Gilbert Trujillo and wife Sally of Chimayo, Henry Trujillo and wife Barbara, Richard Trujillo and wife Josefita, Charlie Trujillo and wife Mary, Ruben Trujillo and wife Lydia of Rio Chiquito; mother, Isabel Trujillo of Rio Chiquito; sister, Theresa Naranjo and husband Dennis of Chimayo; mother-in-law, Juanita Salazar of Chimayo; sister-in-law, Veronica Maestas and husband Joseph of Chimayo; close cousins Toby and Elsie Trujillo; and numerous other relatives and friends. ELIRIA ROMERO, 82, of Talpa died Wednesday. She is survived by her children, Matilda Suazo, Ruben Tomero, Margarita Manzanares, Tomas Romero, Francella Gloria Faye Acosta and Shirley Stearns. JOSE ELFIRIO MEDINA, 80, of San Cristobal died Wednesday. He is survived by his children, Theresa, Joann, Henry, Leroy, Gloria, Andy, Wendy and Jerome; and a brother, Jose Edwardo Medina. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at San Cristobal Catholic Church. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with burial to follow at the San Cristobal Church. Jessica Judith Alagi Brue Arthur, 22, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, was called to heaven after an eight-year-long battle with kidney failure. Her presence will be missed but her strength will live on in all of us. She is survived by her parents, David Arthur and wife, Linda of Angel Fire, NM and Jeanette Arthur and Shane Fischer of Picayune, MS; brother, Brandon, Arthur; sister Erica Arthur; God-sister, Giovanna Giacomo; grandparents, Leo and Eleanor Brue and Austin and Jackie Arthur, all of Albuquerque; great-grandmother, Eva Brue of Albuquerque; Leo J. Retired Major Don J. Baca. Funeral Services will be held at a 10:00 a.m., Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, June 22, 2002 at St. Jules Catholic Church in Lafayette, LA for Retired Major Don J. Baca, 51, who died Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at Lafayette General Medical Center at 1:30 p.m. Msgr. J. Douglas Courville, Pastor of St. Jules Catholic Church in Lafayette, will serve as Celebrant of the Mass. Mr. Baca, the son of the late Donaciano Baca and the former Nellie Rios, was a native of Albuquerque. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, having served two tours in the Vietnam War from 1968-1969. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association of the U.S. Army and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association. He also served as Scout Master of Troop 451 in Scott, LA. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia G. Baca of Lafayette; mother, Nellie Baca of Hacienda Heights, CA; three daughters, Donna Gallegos and husband, Manuel of Albuquerque, Antoinette Baca and Jimmy Alvarez of Lafayette, Vanessa Baca of Albuquerque; three sons, Don Robert Lee Baca of Albuquerque, Michael Quinones and Chris Baca both of Lafayette; four sisters, Sandra Tercero of San Pedro, CA, Lorraine Munguia, Betty Thorpe both of Whittier, CA, Nancy Rodriquez of Hacienda Heights, CA; four brothers, Joseph Baca, Mark Baca, Larry Baca, all of San Pedro, CA, Eddie Baca of Compton, CA; five grandchildren, Brian Maldonado, Samantha Gallegos, Stacy Gallegos, Jonathon Gallegos, Gineva Alvarez, LaTisha Alvarez. Lillie Chavez, 75, joined our Lord on Thursday, June 20, 2002. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Mariano Chavez in 1981; her parents, Aurelio and Teresa Chavez; her brother, MarLee Chavez; her sister, Teresa Davis; and her granddaughter, Rachel Garcia. Lillie is survived by her six children, Glenda Baca and her husband, Ben, Mary Ann Chavez, Richard Chavez, Regina Torrez, Brenda Sanchez, Jane Murray and her husband, Terry; her eight grandchildren, Yvonne Hardy, Mario Baca, Juan (JT) and Mary Torrez, Sabrina Chavez, Selina and Theresa Sanchez, and Tyler Murray; her 11 great-grandchildren, Zachary, Andrew and Jessica Hardy, Forrest Kay and Belle Garcia, Savanah Torres, Shantel Lopez, Vantrese Chavez, Brandon and Antonio Anaya, and Victoria Baca. Aletha I. Davis, 45, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away June 14, 2002. She was a Board Member of the B.P.O.E. Ladies of Lodge #461. Aletha liked playing bingo and loved George Strait, angels and butterflies. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, George T. Davis, Jr.; daughter, Mary Davis of Albuquerque; son, William Davis of Albuquerque; brothers, Matthew McGinnis of T or C, NM, Donald McGinnis of Socorro and Edward McGinnis of Albuquerque; and sisters, Mona Danner of Hobbs, NM and Viola Hix of Albuquerque. Virginia C. Garcia, 67, a resident of Albuquerque since 1955, died Thursday, June 20, 2002. She is survived by her sons, Perfecto Garcia and wife, Rhonda of Belen, Andy Garcia, Michael Garcia and wife, Maria, Richard Garcia and wife, Priscilla; daughters, Darlene Otero and Marlene Garcia; granddaughters, Malanie Otero, Chantel Garcia, Shirray Garcia, all of Albuquerque and Randi Garcia of Belen; grandsons, Mario Pena, Miguel Garcia, Antonio Garcia all of Houston, TX, Russell Garcia of Belen, Richard Garcia, Jr. and Robert Garcia, both of Albuquerque; great-grandsons, Joseph Aragon and Angelo Aragon; sisters, Salome Lopez and husband, Joe, Bertha Herrera and husband, Felipe and Celina Chavez and husband, Precy; and special friends for over 20 years, Joe Sanchez and family, all of Albuquerque. James Hawley passed away suddenly Tuesday, June 18, 2002. He was born and raised in West Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Willa; daughter, Debbie; grandchildren, Ryan, Brittany and Chelsey; sister, Doris Burton and family; mother-in-law, Wilma Hawkins Tanner; brother-in-law, Stan Hawkins and wife, Laurel and family; sister-in-law, Sharon Ray and husband, Ritchie and family; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends. He will be greatly missed. Services are at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 24, 2002 at Central Assembly of God Church, 124 Texas NE. Pallbearers will be Ryan Hawley, Stan Hawkins, Ritchie Ray, Jim Cashman, Jerry Spears and Scott Welch. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up at any Wells Fargo Bank in remembrance of James H. Hawley.

Norma J. LaFaver, 92, a longtime Albuquerque schoolteacher and resident of Albuquerque for 47 years, passed away in Albuquerque June 19, 2002. Her daughter, Sally LaFaver, of Albuquerque; and her son, John LaFaver and his wife, Mary Faye of Alexandria, Virginia, survive her. Her sister, Dorothea Schlechte of Evansville, Indiana; and a stepdaughter, Betty Myers of Salt Lake City, Utah also survive her. She was the proud grandmother of Kristen and Erik Pede and Amy, Jeremy and Sean LaFaver. Her husband, L.H. "Hank" LaFaver, preceded her in death in 1988; and her grandson, Mark in 1966. Mrs. LaFaver graduated from Northern Michigan University and had a rewarding thirty-five year career as a coach, teacher and mentor. She taught two generations of second graders at Sombra del Monte and Comanche Schools and continued teaching day care upon her retirement from the Albuquerque Public Schools. She gave two young neighbor children, who had emigrated from Poland their first English lessons and proudly watched them gain fluency in their new language. She especially enjoyed mentoring student teachers, many of whom made successful teaching careers in the Albuquerque Public Schools. In many ways Norma was years ahead of her times. In the 1920's she was a star athlete in college, organizing an all-star basketball team that toured Michigan. She also excelled at tennis, speed skating, skiing and archery. At the age of 80 she broke her ankle whitewater rafting in Maine and rehabilitated it with exercise and line dancing classes at the Highland Senior Center where she remained an active and enthusiastic member for several years. She was an avid sports fan, carefully following the fortunes of Lobo sports. Her family and friends marveled at how her competitive spirit and determination kept her physically and mentally active, enjoying her family and friends, her garden, her crossword puzzles and her cat, Georgie. A Memorial Service will be conducted in Carter Hall at the La Vida Llena, 10501 Lagrima De Oro, NE at 1 pm, Saturday June 22, 2002. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the La Vida Llena Foundation. Strong-Thorne Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

William H. Lohman, age 86, and a resident of Albuquerque since 1982 formerly of Chicago, IL died June 19, 2002. Survivors include his wife, Doris E. Lohmann; son, Alan Lohmann and wife, Mikki; grandchildren, Aaron, Amy, Jolie and Lanna; one great-grandchild. William was a member of the Los Altos Christian Church. Services will be held 10:00 am, Saturday, June 22, 2002 in the Chapel of Fitzgerald & Son Funeral Directors 3113 Carlisle Blvd NE with Rev. Christopher Wilson officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Sunset Memorial Park. If so desired memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association New Mexico Chapter 8100 Mountain Rd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110. Fitzgerald & Son Funeral Directors is handling the arrangements.

Stephen T. Mathis, born January 24, 1970 went to his Savior after a long illness. He is preceded in death by his beloved grandmothers, Loloa Martin and Roberta Mathis; and his best friend, his dog, Owin. Stephen will be remembered for his love of animals and his sense of humor. He would like to thank Linda, Charles, Charles Jr., and Damian Montoya, Aaron Tafoya, Maria Apodoca, Charlie and Chris Wyman, Julie and Travis Greenwood and everyone who was there till the end. Stephen asks that all donations be made to Greyhound Companions of NM or the Animal Humane Association. Cremation has taken place and a Private Ceremony will be given. Stephen Todd Mathis, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, after a long illness. Stephen was born in Albuquerque, January 24, 1970. He is survived by his parents, Kent and Sara Mathis; sister, Heather Fredrickson and husband, Chris; grandfather, Robert L. Mathis; uncle, Bill Martin and wife, Peggy; aunts, Mary Maichen and husband, Christopher, Shelly Prost; and numerous cousins. A Private Service will be held in Northern New Mexico. Because of his love for animals and the family's rescued racing greyhounds, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Greyhound Companions of New Mexico, P.O. Angelica McLane has gone to be with the Lord and loved ones on June 20, 2002. Angelica, 82, originally from Puerto de Luna, New Mexico, was a resident at Laurelview for the past 4 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hilario and Delfinia Salinas; sisters, Rufina Apodaca, Zorida Angel and Mela Lueras; and brothers, Clemente, Rafael and Juan Salinas. She is survived by her sisters, Todosio Lucero of Milagro, Josephina Sisneros of Raton and Petra Montano of Santa Rosa; brothers, Reynaldo Salinas of Albuquerque and Ramon Salinas of Tucumcari; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Rosary will be recited Friday, June 21, 2002, 7:00 p.m., at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 7807 Edith NE. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Saturday, June 22, 2002, 10:00 a.m., at Milagro Catholic Church, Milagro, New Mexico with Fr. Schult officiating. Interment will follow in the Milagro Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Fred Apodaca, Juan Salinas, Clyde Lopez, Pete Sisneros, Pat Lucero and Larry Salinas. She will be greatly missed, but not forgotten.
