Thelma Rose Tucker, 87, died peacefully on November 18, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She faced her condition with beautiful smiles and, earlier, outrageously funny witticisms. Even late in her disease she had an 'I love you' and 'you're beautiful' for everyone in her family and in her loving community. Born in San Francisco on August 21, 1912, she spent most of her youth in Cocoran, California, and most of her 62 years of marriage in Santa Cruz and Watsonville, California. After the death of her husband, she came to Albuquerque, where she lived first at Manzano del Sol, and then at St. Mary Rest Home. Thelma thoroughly enjoyed almost everything she did. She was a talented master of tatting and crochet, and other handwork. She never met a cat she didn't like, and she loved chocolates and everything sweet. She enjoyed beer (and she drank it with a straw!) Even into her eighties, she delighted in sunning herself to keep her legs tan. She sometimes said 'when I am an old woman I'll wear purple ', and indeed she did. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Rose Greer and husband, Art. She is survived by her sister, Alice Darland; her daughter, Carol Tucker Trelease; three granddaughters, Ann Tuchler, Sarah Tuchler, and Ada Portman; and great-granddaughter, Taylor Portman. Cremation has taken place, and her cremains will be buried with her husband in Santa Cruz, California. There will be a Mass for Thelma at St. Mary Rest Home, 205 Seventh Street NW, in Sunday, November 28, at 8:30 a.m. A reception will follow. If you wish to remember Thelma, please do so with a gift to a charity.

James A. Vander Heyden, a resident of Albuquerque since 1956, died suddenly Friday, November 19, 1999. He is survived by his sons, John C. Vander Heyden, James V. Vander Heyden; and grandson Jimmy S. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1960 with the Army National Guard's 429th Company, in Fort Bliss, TX. A devoted father and grandfather, he always met the needs of his family and loved ones before his own. He had a great passion for fishing New Mexico's streams and lakes, and was an avid Baseball fan. A special thank you from the family to Kathy Hoyt and Mr. Bob Roybal of Albuquerque. Memorial services will be held Friday, November 26, 10:00 a.m., at Garcia Chapel, 717 Stover SW.

Zach graduated from Albuquerque High and served in the Air Force during WWII, flying combat missions in the European Theatre. He returned home to resume work building his lapidary business, Zachary's Turquoise. In intervening years, his interest in people and in turquoise took him around the world. The people he contacted through his business became lifelong friends and his international reputation grew until he was the noted 'King of Turquoise.' His turquoise collection is considered the best in the world and is now housed in the Turquoise Museum in Albuquerque. He and his collection have been written up in numerous publications, including New Mexico Magazine, Lapidary Journal, and recently, The Smithsonian. His hospitable and humorous spirit will be missed by us all.
