Phyllis Jean Lucero, age 51, of Albuquerque passed away at the Heart Hospital of NM on July 13, 2002. Phyllis owned and operated Tender Loving Care for Furry Friends, a home pet care sitting service. Phyllis was preceded in death by her mother, Johanna Pederson Heitmann, father, Frank Cotton and nephews, Dan and Don Sanchez. Phyllis is survived by her beloved husband, Pete J. Lucero; her daughter, Carrie Marie Hurley and son-in law, Sean Hurley and one granddaughter, Rhiannon Jean Hurley. She is also survived by two sisters, Gayle Caraway and Frances Oban; sister-in-laws, Elisa Sanchez and Mary Ann Lucero; brother-in-laws, Rudy Lucero, Larry Caraway and Robert Oban. Also surviving are nieces and nephews., Rose Sanchez, Kimmer Jo Reid, Chellis Caraway, Randy Lucero, Sandy Lucero and P.J. Mayer and dear family friends Sandra Whorton and Theresa Kelly. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you send a donation to the local animal shelter, SPCA or any other animal rescue center of your choice. A Memorial Service will be held inside the Chapel at Sunset Memorial Cemetery, 924 Menual Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, just West of I-25, on Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. Anyone wishing to attend the Memorial Service is more than welcome. The family will be receiving visitors immediately following the Memorial Service at their home, 10713 Lowe NE, 275-1914, which is in the vicinity where Juan Tabo NE ends at Eubank NE.

Sharon McDaniel, 51, passed away in her sleep July 15, 2002. She is survived by sons, Jason and Aaron McDaniel; mother, Eunice Head; sister, Jackie Head; nephews, Chip and Mike Austin; two aunts, Geneva Gilchrist, El Paso, TX and Lorene Ross of San Antonio, TX and a number of cousins. Funeral arrangements with French Mortuary are pending.

Margie Burton Shepperson, 84, a resident of Albuquerque died, Sunday, July 14, 2002. She is survived by her husband, George E. Shepperson of Albuquerque; son, Bruce Burton and wife, Darlene of Albuquerque; grandsons, Bart Burton of Chandler, AZ and Chris Burton of Albuquerque; son-in-law, Bob Edwards of Pagosa Springs, CO; and many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Burton; daughter, Karen Edwards; and sister, Elaine Mitchell. She retired from the New Mexico Highway Department where she worked for over 20 years as a legal secretary. Mrs. Shepperson was an active member of the Meadows Mobile Home Park Association having served twice as President. She was also a member of Grace Church. Memorial services will be held, Thursday, July 18, 2002, 11:00 a.m. at Grace Church, 6901 San Antonio NE. Irene Emily Thorson, 93, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1983, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2002. Irene was born December 4, 1908 the daughter of William J. and Rose Steiner Thuesen in Beloit, Wisconsin. She graduated from Whitewater State Teachers College in Whitewater, Wisconsin. She had been a high school mathmatics teacher and taught at Roosevelt Jr. High in Beloit, WI until her marriage to C. M. (Pete) Thorson. Before retirement, she worked at Electral Specialties in South Beloit as a secretary. Irene was a member of the Wisconsin Hand Weavers, member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Rio Rancho, was very active in the Meadowlark Senior Center, and she enjoyed gardening and weaving was her passion. Irene was a loving and devoted mother. She was preceded in death by her husband, C.M. Thorson in 1967. Irene is survived by two daughters, JoAnn Wittkowske of Rio Rancho, and Elaine Frary and husband, Bart of Hartford, AL; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. It has been suggested that contributions be made in Irene's memory to the Meadowlark Senior Center, 4330 Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho, NM 87124. Burial will be in the Eastlawn Cemetery in Beloit, Wisconsin. Arrangements by Vista Verde Mortuary, Rio Rancho, 892-9920.

Dorothy Lee Ward, 81, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away July 11, 2002. Her husband, Freddie Ward of Albuquerque; son, Gregory Ward and fiancée, Connie; grandchildren, Gregory Lee Ward, Candice Ward and Terrell Ward; and special friend, Janie Jackson survive her. Private services will be held. Final resting-place will be Santa Fe National Cemetery.

MATILDE G. ARCHULETA, 92, of Española died Sunday. She worked for Zia Co., Española Hospital, Los Alamos Hospital and the Española School Systems. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacobo Archuleta and her parents, Tomas and Guadalupe Garcia. She is survived by her children, Cliseria Archuleta of Pueblo, Colo., Clotario Archuleta and wife Helen of Santa Fe, Grace Ferran Archuleta of Española, Elizabeth Maestas and husband Gerald of La Puebla, Maria Rarick of Española, Jacobo Archuleta and wife Rosemary of Santa Cruz, Rita Bieri and husband Michael of Albuquerque, Tomas Archuleta and wife Mary of Los Lunas and Teresa Archuleta Sagel of Española; 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margarita Chacon of Grand Junction, Colo., and Piedad Martinez of Utah; a brother, Florencio Garcia and wife Teodorita of Chama; half-brothers and half-sisters, Atocha Gonzales and husband George, Adelires Trujillo and husband Apolinario of Española, Pedro Garcia of Coyote and Tomas Garcia and wife Margaret of Utah; and many other relatives and friends. WILLIAM A. CORDOVA, 84, a longtime Truchas and Santa Fe resident, died Saturday. He was born Oct. 26, 1917, in Truchas. He was a former superintendent of Santa Fe schools, World War II veteran, husband and father. He attended Menaul High School and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from New Mexico Highlands University. The son of a Truchas store owner, in 1942 he had his heart set on getting a education at Highlands University. As were thousands of other young men that year, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. By the time he left the Army, he had participated in the historic invasion of Normandy to take Europe back from the German Army. He survived his harrowing military adventure, but in the last year of his service he lost both of his parents. In the Army, he achieved the rank of corporal, serving in a supply company in the 90th Division, 358th Regiment. He disembarked on French soil during the second wave of the D-day invasion. After landing in June 1944, he was wounded in a German artillery attack. He was awarded a Purple Heart and a Combat Infantryman's Badge. He returned to New Mexico, where he married Maria Elena Jaramillo of Chimay on Nov. 18, 1945. He earned a master's degree in school administration from Highlands University and became superintendent of schools for Santa Fe County in 1958. As superintendent, he led changes that separated Pojoaque schools from Santa Fe County and put Santa Cruz schools in a district with Española. At a Jan. 15, 2002, ceremony in the Santa Fe office of U.S. Rep. Tom Udall, 56 years after he put his life on the line in the service of his country, he was presented the French Medal of Jubbilee awarded by the French government for his service in Normandy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sofia and Timoteo Cordova; brother, Martin Cordova and sister-in-law Sabinita; mother-in-law, Teresita Jaramillo; father-in law, Severo Jaramillo. He is survived by his beloved wife, Maria Elena Jaramillo; children, Tim Cordova and friend Teresa Trujillo, Louie Cordova and wife Anna, Tom Cordova and wife Rose, Lupita Joyce Fierro and husband Carlos; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and many other relatives and friends. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. today where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at Berardinelli Family Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cristo Rey Church. Interment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. A reception will be held following burial at the Los Mayas restaurant at 409 W. Water St. Berardinelli Family Funeral Service.

JOE LUCIO GOMEZ died Monday in Albuquerque. He was born in Las Vegas, N.M. He served and retired from the U.S. Army after 35 years of service, including service in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, with tours in Europe and Japan. He was preceded in death by his children, Susie Gomez, Tony Baca and Richard Gomez; and grandson, Gerry Gallegos. He is survived by wife, Julia Riquetti Gomez of the family home in Albuquerque; children, Irene Gallegos and Roberto Joe Gomez; stepchild, Lourdes Baca Riquetti; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Lillian Maestas; and many other relatives and friends. A viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Direct Funeral Services, 2919 Fourth St. NW. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1860 Griegos Road NW. Burial will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with full military honors. DILIA GRAHAM, 64, of Lower Ranchitos died Sunday. She was co-owner with her husband Robert Graham, who survives her of Graham's Superette. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eduardo and Soledea Mondragon, and her father-in-law Don Graham. Other survivors include children Roberta Sandoval, Grace Graham and Don Graham, all of Santa Fe, and Leonard Graham of Taos; grandchildren Nicole, Cleo, Samantha, Lenny, Tori, Rebeka and Cristofer; her mother-in-law, Soledad Graham; brothers and sisters Tony Mondragon, Molly Archuleta, Abelardo Mondragon, Margarito Mondragon, Chris Mondragon, Ruby Montoya, Linda Gonzales, Gilbert Mondragon and Uvaldo Mondragon; brothers-in-law Toby Graham, Leroy Graham and Ruben Graham; sisters-in-law Sally Graham and Dolores Chavez; special friend Yvonne Salazar and many nieces and nephews. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. VINSON M. HALL, 73, of White Rock died Wednesday. He was employed with the Los Alamos National Laboratory for 33 years as a heating and ventilation engineer. He married Charlene Kopriva in Powell, Wyo., on Sept. 22, 1952. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the design team that created the cantilevered flight deck of the USS Coral Sea. He was an adjutant of the American Legion Post 90 in Los Alamos, a member of the Auxiliary Fire Brigade in Los Alamos and lifetime member of the Elks Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Charlene Hall of White Rock; son, Patrick Hall of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter, Zandra Hall-Chong of Coldspring, Texas; sister, Marie Backs of Los Altos, Calif.; brother, Ray Hall of Pottsboro, Texas.; and five grandchildren. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos with interment to follow at the Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos. PETER B. JOHNSON, 75, of Taos died Sunday following a lengthy illness. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on June 30, 1927, and moved to California with his family at a young age. He served in the U.S. Navy and the Merchant Marine during the 1940s. He met and married Vicki Pugh in Squaw Valley, Calif., where he started his career in real estate. After his retirement, he moved to Taos where he was active in the community and committed to Habitat for Humanity. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vickie Johnson; brother, David; and sister, Barbara; son, Peter B. Johnson Jr.; granddaughter, Ellie and grandson, Miles all of Boulder, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. Rivera-Hanlon Funeral Home.

HOWARD JAMES LEE died Friday at Northeastern Regional Hospital. He was an 'Aviation Pioneer' 0X5 Curtis Wright Hall of Fame member in San Diego which includes inductees such as Charles Lindbergh. He was a World War II veteran of the Pacific Theater and a past president and member of HUMP Pilots Veterans Association. He flew many missions over the Himalaya Mountains of India, China and Tibet bringing much needed supplies to U.S. ground forces. He was involved in aviation from an early age, building his first airplane with friends and later re-building a Taylor Craft Airplane. After his career in the Army Air Corps, he and his wife, Agnes, settled down on 33 acres of land and developed a private commercial airport named Transit Airpark in Pendelton, N.Y. The family owned and operated the airport and restaurant complex for many years. He was a member of the St. Peter's Evangelical Church in Lockport, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Lee and Minnie Lee; brother, Fred Lee; sister, Dorothy Butz; and baby sister, Ruthlyn Lee. He is survived by his wife, Agnes Lorraine Darling Lee of the family home in Las Vegas, N.M.; daughter, Nancy Lee Jaramillo and husband Bernabe of Las Vegas, N.M.; son, Fred Lee and wife Darlene of Upstate, N.Y.; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers, Robert Lee and Herbert Lee and wife Sally all of Lockport, N.Y.; and many nephews and nieces. Wake services will be at 7 p.m. today at Rogers Chapel. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with full military honors. Rogers Mortuary.

PAUL E. 'JAP' NARANJO, 45, of Santa Clara Pueblo died Saturday. He was an internationally known wildlife artist. He is survived by his wife, Ana Naranjo; his children, Alana Naranjo and Luciano Naranjo; one granddaughter, Aaliyah Naranjo all of Santa Clara Pueblo; his parents, Raymond and Lila Naranjo of Santa Clara Pueblo; three sisters, Marian, Mildred and Rhea Naranjo all of Santa Clara Pueblo; five brothers, Allen Naranjo and wife Kay of Virginia, Roger Naranjo and wife Nona of Ignacio, Colo., Daniel Naranjo and wife Rose, Gilbert Naranjo all of Santa Clara Pueblo, and James Naranjo and wife Isabel of Santa Fe; his godmother, Helen Sing of Utah; and many other relatives and friends. RICHARD WILLIS REED, 68, of Rociada died Thursday in Pendaries. He was born Nov. 27, 1933, to Permelia Kirkland and Willis Lee Reed. He was united in marriage on Feb. 13, 1960, at the 1st Baptist Church in Midland, Texas, to Carol Louise Snethen. He was employed as a Soil Conservationist with the U.S. government for 30 years. A devoted Christian, he was a very active member of the United Church of Angel Fire. He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Allen 'Buddy' Reed and his parents. He is survived by his wife, Carol L. Reed of the family home in Rociada; daughters, Rena Davis and husband Jim of Plano, Texas, and Ronda Howle and husband Rusty of Trophy Club, Texas; four grandchildren; sister, Wilma 'Sis' Reed and husband James of Dallas, Texas; and many other relatives. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be conducted at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to a charity of your choice in his memory. Rogers Mortuary.

GILBERT A. ROMERO, 28, of Mora died Saturday. He was born in Las Vegas, N.M., on April 30, 1974, to Gilbert Romero and Mary Ann Magaña. He was united in marriage in Mora on Jan. 15, 1996, to Jolynn Roybal. He was employed by La Jicarita Telephone Co-op as a telephone journeyman. He served in the U.S. Army as a Private 1st Class for approximately two years and received an honorable discharge. He was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert Romero Sr.; maternal grandfather, Sam Magaña; uncle, Leo Romero. He is survived by his loving wife, Jolynn Romero of the family home in Mora; daughters, Brianna and Megan Romero both of Mora; son, Justin Vigil of Guadalupita; mother, Mary Ann Villarreal; stepfather, Ismael Villarreal both of Las Animas, Colo.; brothers, Albert Romero and wife Patricia of Mora, Wilbert Romero and wife Katrina of Albuquerque, Herbert Romero of Las Animas, Colo., Leonard Romero and Gilbert (Gordo) Romero all of Mora; sister, Leona Romero of Mora; and many other relatives and friends. Rosary services will be at 7 p.m. today at the St. Gertrudes Church in Mora. MARIA VIOLA ROMO, 50, of Ranchos de Taos died Saturday in Las Cruces. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lucy Casias Romo in 1994. She is survived by her husband, Santiago Rascon; son, Emilio Rascon both of Las Cruces; and father, Alberto Romo, Sr.; sisters, Pauline Vigil; Ruby Mondragon (Tom Sebren), Mary Lane Rios (Eddie); brothers, Eddie Albert Romo Jr. (Violanda), Tony Romo (Roberta), Raymond Romo (Priscilla), James Romo and many other relatives and friends. FRANCES SALAZAR, 64, of Santa Clara died Sunday following a sudden illness. She was a well-known Santa Clara potter. She was preceded in death by her mother, Flora Naranjo; father, Ramon Naranjo; granddaughter, Justine Tafoya; and son, Ronald Velarde. She is survived by her companion, John Vigil of San Pedro; children, Sophie Cata and husband Frank, Yolanda Velarde and companion Eloy Chavez both of San Juan, Elaine Salazar and companion Michael Aguilar, Angela Salazar and companion Joseph Tafoya, Jose Salazar Jr. and Georgette Vigil and companion Adrian Baca all of Santa Clara; sisters, Barbara Martinez, Glenda Gibson and husband Bruce, Ramona Sisneros and husband Sam and Mida Tafoya all of Santa Clara; one brother, Sammy Naranjo; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. A second rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the family home. JOSIE A. SANCHEZ, 97, of Española died Thursday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Maria Sanchez; three sons, Joe Sanchez, Jr., Filimon Sanchez and Rudy Sanchez; a daughter, Carlota Lovato; grandchildren, Michelle Lovato, Arthur, Frankie and Stevan Sanchez and Danny Dillon. She is survived by two daughters, Mable Hollandsworth of California and Lorraine Romero and husband Jim of La Mesilla; two daughters-in-law, Priscilla V. Sanchez of Española and Rosie Jones of Albuquerque; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Onofre Garcia of Sylmar, Calif.; brother-in-law, Tony Sanchez and wife Antonia of Española; and many other relatives and friends. ANITA F. SANDOVAL, 86, of Albuquerque and originally of Truchas died Saturday following a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Felimon M. Sandoval Sr.; son, Nick Sandoval; granddaughter, Jo Ann Ortega; sister, Adela Olguin; and two brothers, Tony Fernandez and Albert Pacheco. She is survived by her children, Dora Nelson of Chili, Felimon Sandoval Jr. of Los Luceros, Esther Keller of Albuquerque and Flaymon Sandoval of Truchas; half-sister, Elviria Montoya of Cordova; 26 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and four great-great- grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Truchas with interment to follow at the Truchas Catholic Cemetery. DeVargas Funeral Home of the Española Valley.
