MELINDA GARCIA LUJAN, 92, of Nambé died Saturday after a ten-year battle with Alzheimer's disease.
She was born to Ramon Garcia y Sena and Patricinia Salazar.
She lived within one mile of where she was born all her life. She was a dedicated homemaker and an avid gardener.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Juan B. Lujan.
She is survived by her son, Ramon of the home; daughter, Sostella and husband, John McGaw, of Las Cruces; and one granddaughter.
Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nambé with burial to follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

DAN. V. ORTIZ, 87, of Albuquerque died Saturday.
He was born in Santa Fe where he lived with his wife for 45 years. He had a quick wit and energetic personality.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Toni; parents, Leopoldo and Celia Ortiz; one granddaughter; and brothers, Ernest and Tony.
He is survived by his sons, Danny and Louie; brother, Joe and wife, Crucita, of Santa Fe Springs, Calif.; sisters, Josie Gallegos and Dolores Salazar and husband, Manuel, of Albuquerque and Lupe Martinez of Kearns, Utah; seven grandchildren; and many other relatives.

ALFRED "SURDO" SANDOVAL, 62, of Las Vegas, N.M. died Friday at Meadows II.
He was born in Wagon Mound to John N. Sandoval and Bertha Garcia. He worked for many years as a trackman with the Santa Fe Railroad. He was a featherweight boxer and he loved to play pool. He had a good personality. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and brother.
He was preceded in death by his dad, John Sandoval.
He is survived by his mother, Bertha Sandoval of Las Vegas, N.M.; son, William Quintana-Sandoval and wife, Angela, of Tecolotito; daughters, Frieda Sandoval-Vialpando and husband, Ramon, of Las Vegas, N.M., Denise Locke of Albuquerque, Therese Melton and husband, Mike, of Las Vegas, N.M.; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Juan Sandoval and wife, Rae, and Efren Sandoval, all of Los Angeles, Narciso Sandoval and wife, JoAnn, of Bremerton, Wash.; Chris Sandoval and wife, Patsy, of Albuquerque, and Lawrence Sandoval and wife, Antonia, of Las Vegas, N.M.; sister, Victoria Sandoval of Las Vegas, N.M.; and many other relatives and friends.

BERTIE J. STARGEL, 78, of Santa Fe died Sunday.
She moved to Santa Fe in 2002. She was a former resident of Lubbock, Texas. She was born to Joe and Paralee Pool. She grew up in the Beckton and Idalou, Texas, area. She married Earl Stargel in 1952. She worked as a waitress at Eddy's Café in Lubbock, Texas. She was also a licensed vocational nurse and worked for Lubbock Anesthesia Associates as a surgical dental assistant. She attended the First Baptist Church and Bethel Assembly of God in Lubbock, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Earl Stargel; parents, Joe and Paralee Pool; and brother, Harold W. Pool.
She is survived by her daughter, Dianna Jeanelle Reeves; son, Bobby and wife Nancy Stargel, all of Lubbock, Texas; sisters, Bobby and husband, Arthur Burnett, of Shallowater, Texas, and Aileen Spurgeon of Lubbock, Texas; three grandchildren; and many other relatives.

MARY AGNES VALDEZ TAPIA, 76, of Nambé died Saturday after a brief illness. She was employed by the County of Los Alamos for 30 years. She was an avid gardener and loved roses and orchids. She loved to collect and restore antiques. She had a lifelong love for learning and a kind and gentle nature. She believed in the family and in keeping it strong, close and loving.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward E. Tapia; parents, Emmanuel Salvador and Beneranda Valdez; brothers, David, Celestino, Fred, Candido and Romolo Valdez; and sister, Cornelia Valdez.
She is survived by her children, Edmund Tapia and wife, Margie, of Pojoaque, Patricia Tapia-Gomez and husband, George D., of El Rancho, Christina Terpanick and husband, Alan, of New Jersey, Tim Tapia and companion, Marylou Ortega-Shaw, of Nambé, Teresa Tapia-Day and husband, Ethan, of Arizona, John Tapia and wife, Karen, of La Puebla; 12 grandchildren; sisters, Maria Elvira Martinez and husband, Roman, and Mariana Eliza Maestas, all of Española; and brother, Sam Valdez and wife Lily of Denver.
