ELLEN KOCH BUCHOLZ, 75, of Santa Fe died Wednesday. She was generous with her time and in her spirit. She was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Santa Fe Garden Club, St. Vincent Hospital Auxiliary and served on the boards of the Santa Fe Community College Foundation and Girls Inc. She is survived by her husband, K. William "Bill" Buchholz; daughters, Nancy Myers and husband Victor of Santa Fe, Judy Bitner, and Karla Nystrom and husband Don, all of Denver; sister, Wanda Wilson of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; and five grandchildren. ALFREDO MARTINEZ, 84, of La Villita died Friday. He was born in Lyden to Luis and Carlota Martinez. He retired from the state Highway Department in 1990. He was always involved in the political scene and was considered "Mr. Democrat" for his loyalty to his party. He was known for his New Year's traditional event of Los Dias and his "versos" he made up and sang for his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Benita; parents, Luis and Carlota Martinez; brothers, Jacobo and Luis Martinez; and sisters, Atocha, Piedad and Cresencia. He is survived by his daughters, Martha Stockham and husband Frank of Albuquerque, and Berna Fernandez and husband Alfred of Hernandez; son, Juan Martinez and wife Diane Martinez of La Villita; sister, Sadie Rendon and husband Leo of Utah; brothers, Tony Martinez and wife Maria of Utah, and Sam Martinez and wife Dolores of Fairview; niece whom he considered a sister, Bertha Medina and husband Onofre; six grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. ERNEST "ROCKY" NEWTON, 85, of La Mesilla died Wednesday. He was born to John and Emily Newton in Worth, Ark. He moved to New Mexico in 1950, where he met his wife, Eulalia Quintana, and they married in 1953. He was a member of the Ironworkers Local No. 496 for 52 years. He worked the majority of those years in Los Alamos. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Roadrunner Chapter of Merchant Marines and the VFW. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and camping. He was an avid gardener and farmer. He is survived by his wife, Eulalia Q. Newton; daughters, Marilyn and husband Erle Wright of Espaņola, and Mona Newton and husband David Lewis of Louisville, Colo.; three grandchildren; sister, Stella Hedman of Bartlesville, Okla.; and many other relatives. EDWARD QUINTANA, 76, of Santa Fe died Tuesday. He was born and raised in Santa Fe and graduated from Santa Fe High School, where he was involved in sports, especially basketball. He was with the New Mexico National Guard when it was activated during the Korean Conflict, after which he continued his schooling to graduate from the College of Santa Fe. His dream of becoming a teacher of Spanish was fulfilled at Harvey Jr. High and later at Santa Fe High. He realized a need for a private driving education program. He started the Del Camino Driving School in 1963 and retired the school in 1997, during which time he was the sole behind-the-wheel instructor. His students of later years were often the children of former pupils. His love of the Spanish language and culture led him to additional schooling in Guadalajara, Mexico, and to further travel throughout Central and South America, with his family. In later years, he and his wife spent much time in Spain during the late fall and early spring. He had many nicknames, such as Ciego, Dr. Moto, Mr. Grey, Mr. Q. and Peanuts. He loved his family, his work and his home in Santa Fe. He was preceded in death by his parents, Genaro and Josefina; brothers and sisters, Isabel Gonzales, Florinda Ortiz, Juan Quintana, Ruben Quintana, Sigifredo Quintana, Remigio Quintana and Genaro Quintana Jr. and many other relatives. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Herrod Quintana; son, Christopher R. Quintana; and brother, Arthur Quintana. ORREN BEATY JR., 85, of Clayton died Jan. 19 at a nursing facility for Alzheimer's patients in Las Cruces.
He was a graduate of New Mexico State University and the University of Houston, and worked as a reporter and political columnist for the Arizona Republic in Phoenix. He later moved to Washington, D.C., to serve as administrative assistant for then- U.S. Rep. Stewart L. Udall. Later, he transferred to the Interior Department, where he served as chief of staff to Secretary Udall. In 1967, he was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson as co-chairman of the Four Corners Regional Commission to work with the governors of the four Southwestern states to promote economic development. He later served as associate editor for Congressional Quarterly. In 1970, he was a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Arizona. He also served as the Western-states coordinator in the unsuccessful Democratic presidential campaign of Sen. Edmund S. Muskie. In the mid-70's, he was president and executive director of the National Association of Railroad Passengers. From 1976 until his retirement in 1988, he was involved in the development of energy sources for rural electric cooperatives and municipal utilities as assistant general manager of Western Fuels Association, Inc.
He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, serving as a radar navigator instructor for crews of B-29 bombers. He served with the Air Force during the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Turner Beaty of Las Cruces; children, Dr. Orren Beaty III of Asheville, N.C., Laura Beaty of McLean and Susana Michael of Tucson; a sister; and five grandchildren.

JOE F. GARCIA, 76, of Santa Fe died Friday.
He was a lifelong resident of New Mexico. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War.

MARY FRANCES GRIEGO, 58, of Espaņola died Sunday after a long illness.
She was previously employed at the Cities of Gold Casino and did numerous other jobs, but most of all she was a devoted wife and mother.

ALICE C. JACQUEZ, 71, of Gallina died Friday after a short illness.
She loved being around children, especially her grandchildren. She was a very caring and compassionate person.

J.L. KUNKLER, 83, of Santa Fe died unexpectedly Friday at St. Vincent Hospital.
He was a veteran of World War II, an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps in chemical warfare and a member of Who's Who in Science. He was a graduate of Muskogee Central High School and Oklahoma State University and retired from the U.S. Geological Survey in 1986. Fishing, swimming and skiing were among his favorite things to do.
He was preceded in death by his father, Rosco; mother, Jewell; and brothers, Charlie, Paul and Johnny Kunkler.
He is survived by his brother, David Kunkler of Richland Wash.; sister, Mildred Ann Black of Missouri, and many other relatives and friends.
