BENNIE MAES, 80, of Albuquerque died Tuesday at the Veteran's Memorial Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite Maes; brother, Frank Maes; and son, Joseph.
He was a former resident of Los Alamos (1946-1993). He was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Army infantry in the European Theater. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. He worked for the Zia Company in Los Alamos from 1946 until his retirement in 1986.
An avid sports enthusiast and participant, he excelled in basketball in high school and played semi-pro baseball. He was a member of the American Legion and participated in the American Legion Baseball Program. He was actively involved in the LAHS Boosters Club. He was an accomplished golfer and continued to play throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife, Rose; children, Ben Maes; Gloria McAteer and husband, Dennis; Becky Michelsen and husband, Randy; Mike Maes and wife, Sandra; Guiguite Yett and husband, Robert; Frank Maes and wife, Laurie; Steve Maes and wife, Julie; Bob Maes and wife, Trish; Martha Waters, Charlie Maes and Val Gomez; 14 grandchildren; four stepchildren; and many other relatives.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Anne Catholic Church, 511 Alicia St, Santa Fe. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3700 Canyon Rd, in Los Alamos. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

ROBERT H. MARTIN, 83, of Santa Fe died Sunday after a long battle with cancer.
The native Chicagoan took his first pictures at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1933 and thereafter documented both New Mexico and world history for decades to come. He studied photography at Chicago's Institute of Design and the Winona School of Professional Photography in Indiana. After joining the U.S. Army in 1946, he volunteered to move to Los Alamos to work as a military photographer. Shortly after moving to New Mexico, he met and married Mela Ortiz y Pino. Over the course of his career as a military photographer and later a photographer for LANL, he documented more than 100 nuclear and thermonuclear explosions all over the world. He retired from the lab in 1980 after 33 years of pictures and service.
His work appeared in the National Geographic and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Throughout his career he received countless honors and awards for his work, including the "Master of Photography" title from the Professional Photographers of America.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mela Ortiz y Pino.
He is survived by sister-in-law Concha Ortiz y Pino de Kleven; special niece and nephew Francie and Jeff Miles, and friends.

THELMA RINGQUIST, 76, of Los Alamos Fe died Monday.
She traveled the world as a military wife and a civil servant. She had made her home in Germany, England, New Mexico, Arizona and Florida. Her greatest joy other than her family was the Order of The Eastern Star of which she had recently been elected as Worthy Matron of the Los Alamos Chapter. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Anna Feltman of New York and husband, Carl J. Ringquist.
She is survived by her sons, Peter Rinquist of Florida, David Ringquist of California, Mark Ringquist of Japan and Eric Ringquist of New Mexico and their families.
Burial will take place at 2:30 p.m. today at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

ALBERTO ROMERO, JR., 94, of Mora died Sunday at Alta Vista Regional Hospital in Las Vegas, N.M.
He was born in Mora to the late Alberto Romero, Sr. and Ignacita Martinez. He was married to Lucia Valdez. He served in the U.S. Army and worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Mora as postmaster for 12 years. He also taught school in Ocate, Mora, El Alto and Monte Aplanado. He was a member of St. Gertrude's Church in Mora, member of the VFW in Mora and member of Siete Del Norte Community Development Corp.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lucia Romero; daughters, Ramona Romero and Inez Romero; and brothers, Pat Romero and Roque Romero.
He is survived by his children, Martin L. Romero and friend Cynthia Cordova of El Alto; Albert Chris Romero and wife, Betty, of Mora; Rita Lydia Velarde and husband, Leo, and Beatrice Trujillo, all of Albuquerque; Susie Garcia of Cheyenne, Wyo.; 15 grandchildren; sister, Loyola Lucero of El Alto, and many other relatives friends.

PETE A. ESQUIBEL, 89, of Upper Las Nutrias died Monday after a short illness. He was an honorable and kind man. HOWARD LOUIS RICE, 61, of Shadow Mountain died Tuesday after a long illness.
He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Kearsage as a radio-communications operator. He was with the crew that picked up Mercury program astronauts Gordon Cooper and Wally Schirra from their space capsules in the 1960s. He was employed by Los Alamos National Laboratory for 15 years as an area coordinator. Later, until his death, was a contractor with Butler for LANL. He loved all kinds of music, but his favorite was pianist-composer Giovanni Marradi. He was very involved in the Boy Scouts of America in White Rock and was also an avid outdoorsman. He did painting as a hobby and won first place at the LANL Arts and Crafts show in 1993. He also loved family cookouts, playing games and working in the yard. He was well known by the members of his church, both in White Rock and Española, and by his co-workers.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Anthony and Keith Rice; and father, Howard Leston Rice.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Rice of Shadow Mountain; son, Rusty Rice and wife Shonna of Gallup; five grandchildren; mother, Bernice Drake and husband Dale; sister, Carol Rice, all of Colorado; brother, Danny Rice and wife Irene of Shadow Mountain; stepchildren, Brian Manzanares of Santa Fe and Melanie and Monica Manzanares, both of Shadow Mountain; and many other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. today in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home with burial to follow at 3 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
