Gladys W. May
Gladys W. May, 88, of Phillipsburg, NJ passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2008 at the Care Center of Lopatcong, Lopatcong Township, NJ. Born: On August 26, 1919 in Lehighton, Pa, Gladys was a daughter of the late William H. and Stella Rabenold Evert. Personal: Gladys and her husband, George A. May, celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on August 12, 2007. She graduated from Lehighton High School Class of 1937. She was a homemaker and also an avid Bingo player. Memberships: Gladys was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg. Survivors: In addition to her husband, George, Gladys is survived by a daughter, Marilyn A. Bieler of Pen Argyl, Pa; a brother, Donald Evert of Phillipsburg, and two sisters, Blanche Dotter of Lake Wallingpaulpack, Pa, and Dorothy Magini of Florida. Three brothers and three sisters died earlier. Services: Funeral services will be private. There will be no calling hours. The Rupell Funeral Home LLC, Phillipsburg, is in charge of arrangements. Burial of her cremains will be in St. James Lutheran cemetery, Greenwich Township, NJ.
Lois M. Salmon
Lois M. Salmon, 92, of Phillipsburg, NJ, passed away on Monday, August 11, 2008 at the Easton Hospital, Wilson Borough, Pa. Born: On May 13, 1916 in Phillipsburg, she was a daughter of the late Arthur J. and Emily Jensen Park. Personal: Lois was the wife of the late James W. Salmon, who passed away February 8, 1983. At one time, she lived in Morris Plains, NJ and Denville, NJ, returning to Phillipsburg in 1976. She was a school teacher. She taught mathematics in the East Hanover Township, NJ Elementary School. Later, she was a substitute teacher in the Denville Elementary School. She graduated from Phillipsburg High School, Class of 1934 and from the Moravian College for Women in Bethlehem in 1938. She loved animals. She also accomplished seamstress and could create many new things with a needle and thread. She enjoyed playing scrabble with her friends. Her greatest pleasure was helping others. Survivors: She is survived by cousins and many, many good friends. Her son, James W. Salmon, Jr., passed away June 28, 1993. Services: Will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Rupell Funeral Home LLC, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg. A Calling hour will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be held at Fairmount cemetery in Phillipsburg.
Virginia M. Lilly
Virginia M. Lilly, 82, of Parkside, Pohatcong Township, NJ, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2008 at Warren Hospital. Born: On January 8, 1926 in Easton, Pa, she was a daughter of the late Dewey H. and Viola Mills Thatcher. Personal: She and her husband, Richard Lilly, celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on July 18, 2008. She had lived in the Phillipsburg, NJ area for 56 years. At one time, Virginia worked in the accounting department at Ingersol-Rand, Phillipsburg. She last worked at the Phillipsburg Pharmacy in Phillipsburg and Alpha, NJ for 15 years, retiring in 1987. She graduated from Easton High School, Class of 1944. Virginia enjoyed trips to Atlantic City and playing bingo with her friends. She was an Elvis Presley fan and an avid collector of owls. Memberships: She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Pohatcong Township. Survivors: In addition to her husband, Richard, she is survived by a son, Robbie J. Lilly and his wife, Susan of Bethlehem, Pa; a step-son, Richard C. Lilly and his wife, Mary of Phillipsburg; a daughter, Dawn M. Stueber and her husband, Monroe of Jacksonville, NC; two sisters, Marjorie Stelma and her husband, John of Easton, and Shirley Osborn of Phillipsburg; six grandchildren, Monroe, Jr. who is stationed in Iraq, Carter, John, Keith, Kevin, and Richard; nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Russell and Richard Thatcher, and two sisters, Dorothy Pittinger and Betty Thatcher, all died earlier. Services: Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Rupell Funeral Home LLC, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg. A calling hour will be held on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine, Palmer Township, Pa.
Howard A. Dunfee
Howard A. Dunfee, 97, of Bethlehem, and formerly of Phillipsburg, passed away Friday, August 15, 2008 in Easton Hospital, Wilson Borough. Born: He was born October 30, 1910 in Jamesburg, NJ, a son of the late Howard A. Dunfee and Hilda Cramp Dunfee. Personal: He and his wife, the former Edna Shive, celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary on December 22, 2007. Howard had lived in Bethlehem for the past 20 years, having moved from Phillipsburg. He was a member of the Phillipsburg Police Department for 29 years, retiring as a Sergeant in 1968. He then worked for the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission for seven years and retired in 1975. He attended Phillipsburg High School. Howard was an avid bowler. He had bowled in the former Masonic Bowling League and the Retired Men's Bowling League at Bel Pike in Belvidere. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends and watching bowling tournaments on television. Memberships: Howard was the oldest living member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Phillipsburg. He was a 60-year member of Phillipsburg Lodge 53, F& AM. He was a member of Warren County Forest #14, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Crescent Temple Shrine, Burlington, NJ, AARP and a life member of Easton Fleas Club and Citizens Hose, Co., both of Easton. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Edna; a son Dale H. Dunfee of Phillipsburg; two daughters, Lynn D. Castner of Bethlehem and Terry Gray of Leesburg, Virginia; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Three brothers, Earl, Russell and Meredith Dunfee died earlier. Services: A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 500 Hillcrest Blvd., Phillipsburg. There will be no calling hours. Entombment of his cremains will be in St. Paul's Chapel of the church. The Rupell Funeral Home, Phillipsburg, is in charge of the arrangements. Judith A. Hardenburg
Judith A. Hardenburg, 65, of Oxford, NJ, passed away on Friday, August 22, 2008 in Warren Hospital, Phillipsburg, NJ. Born: On May 8, 1943 in Somerville, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Millard Houston Todd and Ethel Lane Cronce Todd. Personal: She was a homemaker who, for years, was an organist for area churches and a bookkeeper for the family heating and plumbing business. She was a graduate of Hunterdon Central High School, Class of 1961, and she attended Raritan Valley Community College for two years. She was a musical composer for many years. Memberships: She was a member of the Phillipsburg Alliance Church, where she was an organist and member of the choir. Survivors: She is survived by a son, Todd Leroy Hardenburg of Ringoes, NJ; a daughter, Ellen Whited of Oxford, NJ, and one granddaughter, Dorothy Ann Whited. Services: Will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the church, 255 Lincoln Street, Phillipsburg, NJ 08865. A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service in the church. Burial will be in the Oxford Hillside cemetery, Oxford, NJ. Memorials: may be made to the Church Building Fund in her name.
Eva Willever Gares
Eva Willever Gares, 100, formerly of Carpentersville and Phillipsburg, NJ, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2008. Born: On January 5, 1908 in Belvidere, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Anne Young Willever. Personal: Her husband, Leon R. Gares, passed away in April 5, 1987. Eva had been employed for many years by the New York Transformer Company in Alpha, NJ. She attended Belvidere High School and graduated from the Easton School of Beauty. Memberships: She was a member of Greenwich Presbyterian Church, Greenwich Township, NJ, where she was also a member of the Friendship Club, and the Senior Citizens Association. She was a former member of Delaware Chapter #50, Order of the Eastern Star, Phillipsburg and was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels Program in Phillipsburg. Survivors: She is survived by her daughter, Shirley G. Schwarzbach of Palmer Township, Pa; a grandson, Dr. Paul Schwarzbach and his wife, Lori Ann of Bethlehem, Pa; two granddaughters, Dr. Lori Rodriguez and her husband, Fidel of Long Beach, California, and Lynn Rice and her husband, Paul of Bethlehem, and four great-grandchildren, Caleb, Ethan, and Hannah Schwarzbach, and Matthew Rodriguez. Five brothers, Lester, Jasper, Samuel, Alfred, and Howard Willever, and two sisters, Myrtle Lockard and Mary Cooper, all died earlier. Services: Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Rupell Funeral Home LLC, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg. A calling time will be held on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Belvidere cemetery, Belvidere, NJ. John C. Damato
John C. Damato, 76, of Phillipsburg, NJ, passed away on Monday, September 8, 2008 at his home. Born: On September 6, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY, he was a son of the late Joseph and Ann Raffanello Damato. Personal: His wife of 48 years, the former Ruth C. Sowinski, passed away on December 23, 2001. John had lived in Phillipsburg for the last 53 years. He was a field auditor for the Internal Revenue Service for 33 years, working out of the Bethlehem, Pa, office. He retired in 1992. He graduated from Brooklyn High School, Brooklyn, NY. He also graduated from Churchman's Business College, Easton, Pa. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He served as a gunners mate on the USS Mississippi and the USS Randolph. John's greatest pleasure was all of his family. He enjoyed traveling with his grandchildren, making annual trips to Florida, California, and Las Vegas. He also enjoyed visits to Atlantic City and Mount Airy. Memberships: John had served on the Phillipsburg Town Council for the last nine years. He was elected three times, the last being in 2006. He was former president of the Town Council. He served on many different committees while elected including the UEZ, RCA Committee, and the Board of Directors at the Firth Youth Center. He was a member of Ss. Philip and James Catholic Church, Phillipsburg. He was a fourth degree knight in the Knights of Columbus Council # 474, Phillipsburg. Survivors: He is survived by daughters, Joann D. Paulus of Phillipsburg, Frances A. Tardive and her husband, Ambrose of Lopatcong Township, NJ, Ruthann Damato, with whom he resided, and Ruth Myer of Allentown, Pa; three grandchildren, David J. Eck, Jr., of Phillipsburg, and A.J. and Nicholas Tardive, both of Lopatcong Township; a sister-in-law, Barbara Damato of Harmony Township, NJ; a nephew, Michael Damato, Jr. and his wife, Denise of Harmony Township; a niece, Michele Damato Kistler and her husband, Scott of Easton; a great-niece, Vanessa Hosbach and her husband, Jarrett of Phillipsburg; a great-great-nephew, Cole Hosbach of Phillipsburg; two special friends, his dogs, Ace and Zeke, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Brooklyn, NY. A son-in-law, William Paulus and a brother, Michael Damato, passed away earlier. Services: Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. at the Rupell Funeral Home LLC, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:45 a.m. at the church, 430 South Main Street, Phillipsburg. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and again from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ss. Philip and James Catholic cemetery, Greenwich Township, NJ. Helen B. Hicks
Helen B. Hicks, 93, of West Deptford, NJ, and formerly of Phillipsburg, passed away Friday, September 12, 2008 at Gloucester Manor Health Care Center, Sewell, NJ. Born: January 29, 1915 in Lopatcong Township, she was a daughter of the late Charles O. Sr. and Sarah "Millie" Rush. Personal: Her husband, the late Charles E. Hicks, passed away July 14, 1972. Helen lived in Phillipsburg since 1972, before that she lived in Cleveland, Ohio and Westfield, NJ. She was a secretary. She graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 1932 and from Churchman's Business College in 1934. She was a volunteer at Warren Hospital and for Meals on Wheels in Phillipsburg. Helen loved to travel. Memberships: She was a member of Pilgrim Presbyterian Church, Phillipsburg, where she had served as a deacon. She was a former member of the Sunny Seniors of Phillipsburg. Survivors: Two sons, C. Donald Hicks and wife Gail of West Deptford, NJ and Robert R. Hicks and wife Joanne of Raynham, Mass.; two brothers, Robert Rush and wife Joan of Phillipsburg and Donald Rush and wife Phyllis of Wilson Borough; three sisters, Natalie Walsh of Phillipsburg, Doris Seip of Bethlehem Township, Pa., and Jane Hart of Phillipsburg; five grandchildren, Donald, Douglas, Kelly, Lisa and Lori; and 11 great-grandchildren. A brother, Charles O. Rush, Jr., and two sisters, Dorothy Rush and Jessie Miexsell, died earlier. Services: Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Rupell Funeral Home, LLC, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg. Laura M. May
Laura M. May, 83, formerly of Phillipsburg, NJ passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the Old Orchard Health Care Center, Bethlehem Township, Pa. Born: December 17, 1924 in Phillipsburg, she was a daughter of the late Frank Montes and the late Laura Baker Monter. She had lived in Harmony and Phillipsburg all her life. Personal: Laura was a missionary with BCM International in Akron, Pa. She retired in 1986. Outside her church she was the director and teacher of Children's Bible Clubs in Warren and Hunterdon Counties. She was involved with Children's Christian work for 48 years. She truly touched the lives of many, many children. She graduated from Belvidere High School, class of 1941. She also graduated from The Philadelphia College of Bible, Philadelphia, Pa. Her husband, Martin May, while serving in the Army in WWII was killed in the Pacific Theatre in March, 1942. He was the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his valor. Memberships: Fellowship Church of Morris Park, Lopatcong Township, where for many years she taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday school. Survivors: She is survived by several cousins. A brother, Vincent Montes, passed away March 20, 2002. Services: At 11am in the Rupell Funeral Home LLC., 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg. NJ. Helen Louise Stout
Helen Louise Stout, 91, formerly of Phillipsburg, NJ, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 25, 2008 at Warren Haven, Oxford, NJ, where she received loving care for the last six years. Her family was by her side. Born: On October 2, 1916 in Phillipsburg, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Isabelle Brower Osborne. Personal: Her husband of 59 years, John F. Stout, passed away on May 19, 1995. Helen was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a homemaker all of her life. She lived in the Valley View area of Phillipsburg for most of her childhood and adult life. Survivors: She is survived by sons, John E. Stout of Waretown, NJ, and Robert F. Stout and his wife, Dolores of Phillipsburg; a daughter, Nancy Lee and her husband, James of Lopatcong Township, NJ; a brother, Kenneth Osborne of Allentown, Pa; a sister, Alyce Packard formerly of Washington, NJ; seven grandchildren, Terry Stout Price, John Stout, Michael Stout, Melody Lee Imhof, Victoria Stout Cowell, James Lee, III, and Samantha Stout Protyniak, and 14 great-grandchildren. A daughter-in-law, Donna Williams Stout; two brothers, Charles and Daniel Osborne, two sisters, Lillian Devine, and Elizabeth Bunzey, all died earlier. Services: Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Alpha Mennonite Church, 901 East Blvd., Alpha, NJ. Carmen Attinello
Carmen Attinello, 86, of Phillipsburg, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at the Visiting Nurses Association of St. Luke's Hospice in Bethlehem, Pa. Born: On April 14, 1922 in Phillipsburg, he was a son of the late Santo and Concetta Azzalina Attinello. Personal: He and his wife, the former Mary Antonacci, celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on June 4, 2008. He had lived in Phillipsburg all his life. Carmen was employed by the Ingersoll-Rand Company in Phillipsburg for 40 years in various departments of the Rock Drill Division. In 1975, he was appointed manager of the hourly personnel and safety for the company, retiring in 1986. As a young man, he worked with the Civilian Conservation Corporation, instituted by President Roosevelt at Highpoint, NJ, building roads. He was inducted into the Army on November 30, 1942 with the 54th Armored Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division. He served as a gunner and squad leader in charge of two machine guns, two rocket launchers, and 13 men. He directed deployment of men and led attacks, directing fire where most effective. He served in France at the Battle of the Bulge in Luxenbourg, Belgium, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for action at Crailsheim, Germany in April of 1945, and the Silver Star Medal for action at Bastogne, Belgium in December of 1944. He also received the Combat Infantryman Badge, the French Croix de Guerre, the American Theatre Ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon, the Good Conduct Ribbon, the Meritorious Unit Award Medal, and the Victory Medal. He graduated from Ss. Philip and James Catholic High School, Class of 1939. He also attended Lafayette College and received a degree in Engineering. Memberships: He was a member of Ss. Philip and James Catholic Church, Phillipsburg. He was a lifetime member and past commander of Mecsey-Bishop American Legion Post #456, Stewartsville, NJ. He was also a member of Pohatcong Memorial VFW Post 6701, Washington, NJ, the 40 + 8 Post of Warren County, and the National AARP since 1988. Survivors: He is survived by brothers, Anthony Attinello and his wife, Margaret of Phillipsburg, and James Attinello of Monmouth County, NJ; sisters, Frances Attinello, and Theresa Nicrone, both of Phillipsburg, and nieces and nephews. A brother, Samuel Attinello, and a sister, Mary Corriere, both died earlier. Services: Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. at the Rupell Funeral Home LLC, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:45 a.m. at the church, 430 South Main Street, Phillipsburg. Calling hours will be held on Friday (tonight) from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ss. Philip and James Catholic cemetery, Greenwich Township, NJ.
