Dorothy J. Cook
Dorothy J. Cook, 92, of Lopatcong Township, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2005, in the Care Center of Brakeley, Lopatcong Township. Born: October 12, 1912, in Phillipsburg, a daughter of the late Frederick and Margaret Gardner Cook. Personal: She had lived in the Care Center of Brakeley for the past three years. Prior to that, she had lived Delaware Park, Lopatcong Township, and Toms River, N.J. She was a graduate of Phillipsburg High School, class of 1931 and of Trenton State Teacher's College, class of 1935. She was an elementary school teacher in the Toms River School District for many years. She taught sixth grade at the Toms River Regional School. Her students respected her and enjoyed her great sense of humor. Memberships: She was a member of the Pilgrim Presbyterian Church in Phillipsburg, where she was a member of the Women's Rebecca Circle, secretary to the Memorial Committee and for 15 years was active in the Meals on Wheels program. She was also a member of the Warren County Retired Educators Association, the New Jersey State Educators Association and the National Education Association. Survivors: She is survived by nieces and nephews; and her beloved friend and companion, Olga Brands. She was predeceased by two brothers, Roy L. and Earle W. Cook, and four sisters, Verna B. Cook, Ethel Blackton, Virginia G. Ellis and Elizabeth N. Cook. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday in the Pilgrim Presbyterian Church, 750 Belvidere Road, Phillipsburg. Donald M. Voorhees
Donald M. Voorhees, 81, of Stewartsville, N.J., passed away Friday, August 19, 2005, in Warren Hospital, Phillipsburg. Born: September 2, 1923 in Still Valley, N.J., he was a son of the late Harvey and Matilda Petty Voorhees. Personal: He had lived in Greenwich Township all his life. Donald was a farmer for all his working life. He also worked at the American Can Company in Washington, N.J., and at one time, he was road supervisor for Greenwich Township. He was a graduate of Phillipsburg High School, Class of 1943. He loved gardening, and enjoyed working on and fixing his own farm machinery. He did many things to help many people. He and his wife, the former Shirlee Rush, observed their 62nd wedding anniversary on July 3rd. Memberships: He was a member of Greenwich Presbyterian Church, Stewartsville, N.J., for more than 50 years. He was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. Survivors: In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Robin Glosser, and her husband, Kevin, of Warren Glen, N.J.; three nieces and three nephews. A brother, Arthur E. Voorhees, and a sister, Vida Pursel, both died earlier. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church, 17 Greenwich Church Road, Stewartsville, N.J. There are no calling hours. Clarence E. "Pete" Peters
Clarence E. "Pete" Peters, 70, of Broadway, NJ, passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2005 in Warren Hospital. Born: On June 4, 1935 in Washington Township, Northampton County, Pa, he was a son of the late Clarence E. and Myrtle Hopper Peters. Personal: A resident of Broadway for 30 years, Clarence was an electrician at the Edna Mahan Correctional Institution in Clinton for 28 years, retiring in 1997. Prior to that, he worked at the former Shamoon Industries, Phillipsburg, for nine years. In retirement he worked at the Stewartsville Post Office and the Smith Motor Co. in Washington, NJ. He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Clarence graduated from Easton High School, Class of 1953. Memberships: He was a member of Host Lodge #6, F& AM, High Bridge, NJ. Clarence was also a member of the American Legion Post #1000, Trenton, NJ, and was a life member of the Broadway Rescue Squad and the Broadway Fire Co. He was also a member of the New Village and Butler Park Fire Companies, and was a life member of the Easton Fleas Club. Survivors: He is survived by five brothers, William and his wife, June of Forks Township, Pa, Thomas and his wife, Toot of Flower Mound, Tx, Terry and his wife, Charlotte of Danielsville, Pa, Barry and his wife, Lisa of Easton, Pa, and Gary of Scranton, Pa; three sisters, Dolores McWilliams of Easton, Lois Williams of Phillipsburg, NJ, and Karen Neely and her husband, John of Pen Argyl, Pa; many nieces and nephews; and his good friend, Virginia McCormick of Nazareth, Pa. Services: Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Rupell Funeral Home, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Masonic services will be held on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Hay's cemetery, Easton, Pa.
John N. Greenleaf
John N. Greenleaf, 64, of Phillipsburg, died Saturday, December 10, 2005, in St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill. Born: December 8, 1941, in Easton, he was a son of the late John N. and Ethel Gilbert Greenleaf. Personal: He and his wife, the former Elizabeth R. Frankenfield, celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary February 8, 2005. He previously worked at the Lehigh Foundry in Easton, and later, as a caster for Iron Art in Alpha. During his retirement, he was a skilled handyman, who was well known for his ability to take discarded appliances, tools and household items, and restore them. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Elizabeth, he is survived by two daughters, Diane Spence, of Phillipsburg, and Jamie Utzinger of Stewartsville; a son, John, of Phillipsburg; a sister, Connie Witmer, of Easton; two brothers, Gerald and James, both of Phillipsburg; and six grandchildren. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Rupell Funeral Home, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg. Friends may call 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday in the funeral home. Donald J. Strauss
Donald J. Strauss, 80, of Phillipsburg, NJ, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2005 in Warren Hospital. Born: On June 18, 1925 in Bethlehem Township, Northampton County, Pa, he was a son of the late Dorothy Strauss Bartow. Personal: He and his wife, the former Joyce L. Rossnagle, observed their 57th wedding anniversary in July of 2005. Donald had lived in the Phillipsburg area all of his life. He was in the maintenance department of the Ingersol-Rand Co., Phillipsburg, for 32 years, retiring in 1987. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He served on the USS Intrepid and was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. Donald attended Phillipsburg High School. Donald was an avid hunter. He enjoyed farming and working in his garden. Memberships: He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, where he served as an usher counter and assisted in the distribution of the church food pantry. He was also a member of the AARP and the Disabled American Veterans. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Joyce, he is survived by a son, Donald C. Strauss of Stevensville, Montana; a daughter, Barbara J. Walsh of Bangor, Pa; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His step-father, Alex Bartow, died earlier. Margaret T. Gercie
Margaret T. Gercie, 84, of Phillipsburg, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at the Care Center of Phillipsburg. Born: On September 17, 1921 in Phillipsburg, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary Nagy Nemeth. Personal: Her husband, Joseph Gercie, passed away in 1982. Margaret was a homemaker. She attended Ss. Philip and James Catholic Schools. Memberships: She was a member Ss. Philip and James Catholic Church, Phillipsburg. Survivors: She is survived by two sons, Richard J. Gercie and his wife, Brenda of Easton, Pa, Donald T. Gercie and his wife, Michlene of Alpha, NJ; two sisters, Julia Anderson and Mary Stanchus, both of Easton, Pa. Ted S. Gunderman
Ted S. Gunderman, 74, of Stewartsville, passed away on Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24, 2005, in Warren Hospital, Phillipsburg. Born: April 20, 1931 in Warren County, he was the foster son of the late Fred and Edith Lozier Richline. Personal: Ted lived in Stewartsville nearly all his life. He attended the Stewartsville School. He was employed as a driver and warehouseman for the American-United Can Company, New Village, N.J. He was also a maintenance custodian for the Ingersoll Rand Corporation, Phillipsburg. He retired in 1983. He enjoyed home building, talking with his many friends and family, and participated in many spiritual and religious activities. Memberships: Ted was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Christian Assembly Ministries, Stewartsville. Survivors: He is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews who live in various Warren County communities. Foster brothers Ronald, Robert, Russell and William Richline; and foster sisters Frances Dalrymple and Elsie Harrison all died earlier. Robert D. Nickel
Robert D. Nickel, 61, of Phillipsburg, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2005, in Warren Hospital, Phillipsburg. Born: June 30, 1944 in Phillipsburg, he was a son of the late Robert and Helen Ehly Nickel. Personal: Robert had lived in Phillipsburg all his life and was a custodian for the Phillipsburg Board of Education for 15 and one half years. He worked at the Green Street, Barber, and Howell Schools, and retired in 2003. Prior to that, he worked at the New York Italian Bakery in Phillipsburg and Schaible's Bakery in Easton. He was a graduate of Phillipsburg High School, Class of 1963. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served from 1963 to 1967 during the Vietnam War, aboard the U.S.S. Comstock. He and his wife, the former Cathy L. Thorp, observed their 38th wedding anniversary in July. His hobby was sports. He enjoyed all Phillipsburg High School sports. He was also an avid N.Y. Yankees, N.Y. Giants Football, and N.Y. Rangers Hockey fan. In addition, he was an avid fan of the UCLA College Basketball team and the Notre Dame Football team. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved all his family, and all his family loved him. Memberships: He attended St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg. He was a member of the Notre Dame Club of Phillipsburg and the Easton Fleas Club, and he bowled in the Wednesday night Phillipsburg Merchant's Bowling League. Survivors: In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Brenda L. Nickel, of Easton, and Kimberly M. Bacskai, and her husband, Alex, of Phillipsburg; a brother, David L. Nickel, and his wife, Jane, of Phillipsburg; two sisters, Helen L. Nickel and Mary L. Keesler, both of Lopatcong Township, and two grandsons, Brandon R. Nickel, and Cameron A. Clarence A. Karcher
Clarence A. "Duke" Karcher, 82, of Harmony Township, NJ, formerly of Phillipsburg, passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2005 at Warren Hospital. Born: On June 17, 1923 in Phillipsburg, he was a son of the late Clarence and Matilda Robertson Karcher. Personal: He and his wife, the former Doris M. Riffle, observed their 56th wedding anniversary in January of 2005. A resident of Harmony Township for the past three years, Duke was a lifelong resident of Phillipsburg. He was a bank teller, having worked for the former Second National Bank and the Phillipsburg National Bank, both of Phillipsburg, for 35 years, retiring in 1981. An Army veteran of World War II, Clarence served as a T/5 in the European Theatre. He graduated from Phillipsburg High School, Class of 1941 and Churchman's Business College in 1949. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Clarence loved all of his family and all of his family loved him. Memberships: He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Phillipsburg, where he served as an Elder, Sunday school teacher, and superintendent of the church Sunday school. For many years, he was active in the Gideon Bible Society. Clarence was a member of the Bernadine-May American Legion Post #457, Phillipsburg, and was a member of the Pattenburg Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Doris, he is survived by three daughters, Ann E. Hoyt and her husband, Scott of Harmony Township, Kathleen S. Hoyt and her husband, Gary of Belvidere, NJ, and Ruth K. Cockrane and her husband, Kevin of Forks Township, Pa; a brother, Walter R. Karcher of McAllen, Tx; a sister, Florence E. Dominico of Palmer Township; and four grandchildren, Ellen E. Hoyt, Rachel M. Hoyt, Caitlin E. Cockrane, and Jonathan K. Cockrane. Ronald S. Berger
Ronald S. Berger, 90, of Washington Township, NJ, formerly of Stewartsville, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 in Warren Hospital. Born: On September 9, 1915 in Stewartsville, NJ, he was a son of the late Charles R. and Margaret Hawk Berger. Personal: He and his wife, the former Freida Wolf, observed their 67th wedding anniversary in April of 2005. A resident of Washington Township for the past four and a half years, Ronald was previously a lifelong resident of Stewartsville, NJ. He attended Stewartsville schools. Ronald was a stationery fireman at Warren Hospital for 20 years, retiring in 1977. In his earlier years, he was a farmer in the Stewartsville area. In retirement, Ronald worked at Magnetic Windings in Palmer Township and also continued to farm. As a hobby, he repaired and refurbished anything electrical. He was a railroad buff, and enjoyed hunting and professional boxing. Memberships: Ronald attended Stewartsville Presbyterian Church. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Freida, he is survived by three sons, John Berger of Phillipsburg, NJ, Ronald Berger of Gate City, Va, and Lewis Berger of Grapevine, Texas; a daughter, Margaret Evans of St. Petersburg, Fla; a brother, Raymond Berger of Broadway, NJ; three sisters, Catherine Peters of Nazareth, Pa, Agnes Haines of Lopatcong Township, NJ, and Grace Hess of Washington, NJ; 20 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. A brother, Robert Berger, and a sister, Beatrice Miller, both died earlier. Rhonda F Meyer
Rhonda F. Meyer, 43, of Stroudsburg, Pa, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2007. Born: On May 20, 1963 in Phillipsburg, NJ, she was a daughter of Rev. Thomas W. and Janice L. Moyle Smith of Stockertown, Pa. Personal: She was the wife of the Rev. Dr. James C. Meyer. Rhonda was a guidance counselor for the Lehigh Valley Christian High School in Allentown, Pa. She graduated from Phillipsburg High School, Class of "81", and attended Philadelphia Biblical University where she received a B.S. in Bible and a Masters Degree in Christian Counseling. Survivors: In addition to her husband, James, and her parents, Thomas and Janice, she is survived by a daughter, Kristy Meyer, at home; a son, J.J. Meyer, at home, and a brother, Timothy J. Smith and his wife Buffy of Pottstown, Pa. A brother, Mark David Smith, died in 1972. Services: Will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the Cedar Crest Bible Fellowship Church, 1151 South Cedar Crest Blvd., Allentown. Charles F. Ochs
Charles F. Ochs, 87, of Shimer Manor, Pohatcong Township, NJ, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2007 at his home after a lengthy illness. Born: On September 13, 1919 in Phillipsburg, NJ, he was a son of the late John C. and Pauline Bosch Ochs. Personal: He was the beloved husband of the former Mary Shafer, with whom he celebrated 64 years of marriage on September 12, 2006. Charles was a design engineer and research associate with the Dixie Cup/American Can Company, and the Binney & Smith Co., both of Easton. He graduated from Phillipsburg High School, Class of 1937, where he served as vice president of his class and was very active in sports. He served two years in the Navy, 17 months of which were spent in the South Pacific during World War II. Charles enjoyed reading, playing quoits and golf, carpentry and gardening. Memberships: He was a member of the Greenwich Presbyterian Church, Greenwich Township, NJ, where he had served as a elder and a trustee. Charles was a 32nd degree Mason, member of the Phillipsburg Lodge #52, F& AM, Scottish Rite, Valley of Allentown, and Rajah Temple Shrine, Reading, Pa. He was also a member of the Warren County Forest #14, Tall Cedars of Lebanon. He was a member of the Harker's Hollow Golf Club, Harmony Township, NJ, for over 50 years and served on the board of directors. He was a member of the John Dolak American Legion Post in Alpha, NJ, and was also a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars. As a youth, he Charles was active in scouting, later serving as an assistant scoutmaster and cubmaster. At one time, he was a member of the Scout Committee of Greenwich Church. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by three daughters, Marilyn Hummer and her husband Darrell of Glenwood, Md, Jacquelyn Hartson and her husband Glenn of Saugatuck, Mich. and Susan DeWire and her husband Richard of Highlands Ranch, Co; a brother, John Ochs of Rhinebeck, NY, and four grandchildren, David, Jamie, Brett, and Annie. Services: At his request, the funeral service will be private. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Greenwich cemetery, Greenwich Township, NJ.
