Elsie Newman
Elsie Newman, 94, of Phillipsburg, NJ, passed away on Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at the Care Center of Lopatcong, Lopatcong Township, NJ. Born: On October 21, 1910 in Easton, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Rudolph and Mary Fleming Snyder. Personal: Her husband, William H., passed away in 1985. Elsie was an organist and choir director at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Phillipsburg for more than 50 years retiring in 1998. She also gave private lessons to students on the organ and piano in her home. Also, she was a substitute organist in many churches in the Easton-Phillipsburg area for many years. She attended Easton High School. Elsie loved her family and enjoyed sharing in their accomplishments. She wrote much of her own music and found great pleasure in making people happy with her musical talents at nursing homes, organizational meetings, and special events of the Phillipsburg area. She enjoyed baking and playing cards with her friends. She shared herself with everyone. Memberships: She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Phillipsburg. She was recognized as the church Person of the Year at Wesley Church in 1990. She was a former member of the Musical Arts Chorus in Easton. She was also a member of the Organist Guild of the Lehigh Valley and the Sunny Seniors of Phillipsburg. Survivors: She is survived by a son, David W. and his wife, Barbara of Burlington, Vt; a daughter, Barbara A. Gross and her husband, William of Apalachin, NY; a sister, Alice Exley of Parkside, Pohatcong Township, NJ; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Services: Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. in the Rupell Funeral Home, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg, NJ. A calling hour will be held on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Northampton Memorial Shrine, Palmer Township.
Frederick L. Anderson
Frederick L. Anderson, 91, of Gracedale in Nazareth, Pa., and formerly of Riverton, Pa., died Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, from complications of pneumonia. Born: On August 7, 1913 in Bay City, MI, he was a son of the late Edward G. and Clara Maxson Anderson. Personal: His wife, the former Lory Harris, died in 1984. He completed his high school education in 1930 at Bay City High School where he was a drum major and attended the General Motors Institute in 1944 where he achieved certification as a Methods Specialist. Fred received an Honorable Discharge in 1938 from the National Guard and served as Private First Class in Headquarter Company, 2nd Battalion 125th Infantry. He worked as an electrician for the Ford Motor Company in Elyria, OH and was commemorated in 1963 for developing a time saving program for plant electricians on the assembly line and received a new 1963 Thunderbird by the Ford Motor Company in recognition of this achievement. After retiring in 1971, he and his wife, Lory moved to Florida where he accepted a position as a limousine driver for Limousine to the Stars where he had the opportunity to meet dozens of celebrities and visiting dignitaries. His youthful charm and sophisticated demeanor always caught the attention of his celebrity passengers who would often invite him to dine of attend charity events as their guest. A broad hobbyist, his many interests included raising exotic birds, being a HAM radio operator, 50 years of league bowling, and he was a computer enthusiast which led him to build and program his own computer in 1972. Memberships: He was a member of the Ely Lodge #424 F. & A.M., Vermilion, OH; Grand Blanc Lodge #571, F. & A.M., Grand Blanc, MI; and Crescent Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. in Trenton, NJ. He was also a volunteer for the Civil Defense and donated many hours preparing tax returns for senior citizens. Survivors: He is survived by a granddaughter, Deborah Meyers of Phillipsburg, NJ; a grandson, Michael Morgan of Bangor, Pa; a great granddaughter, Season Scheirer of Bethlehem; a great great grandson, Jacob Scheirer of Bethlehem; and a niece, Nancy Guy of St. Petersburg, Fl. His daughter, Shirley Morgan of Oxford, died in 1994, and three sisters, Ruth, Lucille, and Maxine, died earlier. Services: Masonic services by Mansfield Lodge #36 will be held on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Rupell Funeral Home, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg, NJ. Interment will be private and held at the Belvidere cemetery in Belvidere, NJ.
Evelyn "Ebbie" V. Winter
Evelyn "Ebbie" V. Winter, 79, of Bloomsbury, NJ, passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2005 at the Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, NC. Born: On August 8, 1925 in Carpentersville, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Charles E. and Clara Mae Bittenmaster Easterly. Personal: She and her husband, Earle R., observed their 57th wedding anniversary in March, 2004. She had lived in the Bloomsbury and Carpentersville area nearly all of her life. Ebbie graduated from Phillipsburg High School. She worked in the packaging and shipping departments of the former Koh-I-Noor Co. in Bloomsbury, NJ for 20 years, retiring in 1990. Prior to that, she was a beautician, working out of her home. Evelyn loved her family and enjoyed sharing in their accomplishments. She enjoyed creating crafts especially knitting and needlework. She shared herself with everyone who knew her. Memberships: She has been a member of the Greenwich Presbyterian Church, Greenwich Township, all of her life. She was an Elder and Deacon of the church and served on numerous committees for many years. Survivors: In addition to her husband, Earle, she is survived by a son, Charles R. and his wife, Donna of Charlotte, NC; and two grandchildren, Christopher E. and Kimberly D., both of Charlotte, NC. Two brothers, Arthur and Furman Easterly, and two sisters, Dorothy Gillepsie and Libby Easterly, all died earlier. Services: Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the church, 17 Greenwich Church Road, Greenwich Township, NJ. Mary E. Sabo
Mary E. Sabo, 85, of West Easton, Pa, passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Wilson Borough. Born: On December 21, 1919 in Newark, NJ, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Brennan Dunne. Personal: Her first husband, James Ryan passed away in 1963; her second husband, Alex Sabo, passed away in 1997. She has lived in West Easton for 40 years. Prior to that, she lived in Washington, NJ. At one time, Mary worked for the Lipton Tea Co. in Flemington, NJ. She last worked as a machine operator at the former Jodi Fashions in Easton, retiring in 1984. She graduated from Washington High School. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and enjoyed spending precious time with her grandchildren, and all her family. She loved her garden and was an avid Lawrence Welk fan. Memberships: Mary was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Phillipsburg. Survivors: She is survived by two daughters, Carole L. Yale of Phillipsburg, NJ, Alana Spangenberg of Lancaster, Pa; a sister, Agnes Herterich of Matawan, NJ; nine grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. A daughter, Beverly Hammerstone, passed away in January 2004 and a sister, Helen, died earlier. Services: Parastas and burial service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Rupell Funeral Home, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg, NJ. Doris T. Flocard
Doris T. Flocard, 92, formerly of Bethlehem Township, Pa, passed away on Monday, February 14, 2005 at the Easton Nursing Center where she has lived for the last seven months. Born: On December 24, 1912 in Phillipsburg, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Herbert S. and Bessie Vernon Smith. Personal: Her husband, Arthur C., died earlier. Doris was a homemaker. She lived in the Phillipsburg before moving to Bethlehem Township. She also lived in Harmony Township, NJ. She graduated from Phillipsburg High School, Class of 1929. Survivors: She is survived by nieces and grand-nieces. A brother, Herbert S. Smith, Jr. , passed away in 1997. Services: Private funeral services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Ss. Philip and James Catholic cemetery, Greenwich Township, NJ.
Annetta Z. Nittel
Annetta Z. Nittel, 85, of Phillipsburg, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at the Care Center of Lopatcong, Lopatcong Township, NJ. Born: On May 19, 1919 in Ocean View, Va, she was a daughter of the late Henry C. and Anna Ornduff Rufe. Personal: Her husband of 55 years, William F., passed away in 1993. A resident of Phillipsburg all of her life, she was a 1937 graduate of Phillipsburg High School. Annetta was manager and insurance clerk for the West Jersey Motor Club in Phillipsburg for 30 years, retiring in 1985. Memberships: She was a member of the Harmony Presbyterian Church, Harmony, NJ, where she had served as a deacon. Survivors: She is survived by her loving sister, Delores R. Knoble and her husband, Gene of Springfield, Va; a brother-in-law, Ronald S. Smith of Phillipsburg; and nieces and nephews. A son, Barry W., passed away in 1962; and a brother, William R. Rufe and sister, Rita C. Smith, both died earlier. Services: Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 12 p.m. in the Rupell Funeral Home, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg, NJ. James C. Poff, Jr.
James C. Poff, Jr., 41, of Easton, passed away Thursday, February 17, 2005, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. Born: August 16, 1963 in Phillipsburg, he was a son of James C., Sr. and June Wilson Poff, of Wilson Borough. Personal: He had lived in Easton for the past 12 years. Prior to that, he lived in Phillipsburg and attended Phillipsburg High School. James was in the housekeeping department of health care services, working in various nursing homes in Palmer Township, Quakertown, and Allentown and had last worked on Thursday. He was of the Protestant faith. He was an avid NASCAR enthusiast and his favorite driver was Mark Martin. He was also an avid fan of the San Francisco Forty Niners Football Team. He enjoyed Karaoke. Memberships: He belonged to various social clubs in Easton. Survivors: his wife, the former Donna M. Rossnagle Poff, of Phillipsburg; a daughter, Nicole E. Shupe, at home; two brothers, Theodore R., of Wilson Borough, and Carl A., of Phillipsburg; a sister, Cindy L. Leighton, of Easton; nieces and nephews. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Rupell Funeral Home, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg. Call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, Harmony, N.J. Anne Nagy
Anne Nagy of Phillipsburg passed away Saturday, February 19, 2005, in her home. Born: She was born in Bethlehem, a daughter of the late Alex and Rose Balogh Nagy. Personal: She had lived in Phillipsburg since 1926. She was a graduate of Phillipsburg High School, class of 1933. She graduated from Beaver College in 1937 and received her master's degree from New York University. Anne was an elementary school teacher in the Phillipsburg School District for 38 years. She taught seventh and eighth grate math at the Freeman School and eighth grade math at the middle school, both in Phillipsburg. She retired in 1979. Memberships: She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Alpha, and a member of its Golden Age Club. She was also a member of the National Education Association, the New Jersey Education Association and the Warren County Retired Educators Association. Survivors: She is survived by nieces and nephews. A brother, Alex Jr., passed away in 1998 and a sister, Julia Eitelbach, passed away in 1996. Services: 8 a.m. Thursday in the Rupell Funeral Home, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated 9 a.m. in the church, 830 Fifth Street, Alpha. Calling hours will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Entombment will be in the St. Francis Mausoleum in St. Mary's Church cemetery, Alpha.
Edna I VanNess
Edna I. VanNess, 89, formerly of Oxford and Washington, NJ, passed away on Monday, February 21, 2005 at Warren Hospital. Born: On November 17, 1915 in Chatham, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Bert A. and Susan Meyers Prager. Personal: Her husband, Wallace E., passed away in 1972. She has lived at the Care Center of Lopatcong for the last two and a half years. Prior to that, she lived in Oxford and Washington, NJ. Edna at one time was a comptometer operator for the Public Service Co. in Newark, NJ. She was last a business associate with her late husband in conducting the W.E.V. Sheet Metal Contractors in Washington, NJ. Edna graduated from Belleville High School #5, Class of 1935. Survivors: She is survived by two sons, Robert G. of Belvidere, NJ, Wallace E., III of Midlothian, Va; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services: Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the Rupell Funeral Home, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg, NJ. Stephen L. Samson
Stephen L. Samson, 79, of Lopatcong Township, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at the Care Center of Brakeley, Lopatcong Township, NJ surrounded by his family. Born: On November 12, 1925 in Phillipsburg, he was a son of the late Stephen and Margaret Bartow Samson. Personal: He and his wife, the former Doris H. Hays observed their 57th wedding anniversary in December of 2004. A resident of the Phillipsburg area for nearly all of his life, Stephen was a foreman at the Fernwood Transformer Co. in Belvidere, NJ for 20 years before retiring in 1988. Prior to that, he worked for the New York Transformer Co. in Alpha and Phillipsburg. Stephen was a veteran of the Navy, serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He attended Phillipsburg High School. Stephen was an avid fisherman. Memberships: He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Phillipsburg, NJ. He was also a member of the AARP; a former member of the Easton Fleas, and was a life member and exempt fireman of the Reliance Hose Co., in Phillipsburg. Survivors: In addition to this wife, Doris, he is survived by two sons, Stephen R. and his wife, Joy of Lower Nazareth Township, Pa, Donald L. and his wife, Linda of Lopatcong Township, NJ; a daughter, Robin R. Viscomi of Stewartsville, NJ; and three grandchildren, Robert Samson, Shelby Shive and her husband, Bruce, and Jeffrey Viscomi. A sister, Ida Rak, died earlier. Laura Margaret Knauss Morrow
Laura Margaret Knauss Morrow, 98, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, March 3, 2005, in the home of her daughter, Carol Dovan, in Solebury, Pa., surrounded by family and friends. Born: June 14, 1906, in Phillipsburg, she was a daughter of the late Clarence D. and Laura Belle Willever Knauss. Personal: Her husband of 49 years, Raymond V. Sr., died in 1986. Except for the past 16 months, Laura resided in Phillipsburg all her life. She was a 1923 graduate of Phillipsburg High School and had attended the former Churchman Business College in Easton. In her working life, she was the secretary at the former J.M. Kiefer Hardware and Supply in Easton before "retiring" to raise her family. After her family was grown, she did volunteer work for many years at Warren Hospital in Phillipsburg, but most of all enjoyed music, poetry, and warm fellowship with her family and friends. Memberships: She was a lifetime member of Grace Lutheran Church in Phillipsburg, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and was a soloist at many weddings, musicals and special affairs. She was an active member in the Lutheran Church Women. Survivors: three daughters, Carol Dovan and her husband, E. Wayne Sr., of Solebury, Pa., Ann C. Hill of Sabrina, Fla. and Geraldine Sanders of Port Orange, Fla.; a son, Raymond V. Jr. and his wife, Bonnie, of Bethlehem; 20 grandchildren; and countless great and great-great-grandchildren; as well as a niece, Joyce Sickels, a brother-in-law, William Morrow, and a daughter-in-law, Mary Morrow, all of Phillipsburg; and a daughter-in-law, Katharine Morrow of Schierling, Germany. A son, Ronald, and a sister, Pearl Emery, both of Phillipsburg, predeceased her in 1994 and 1993 respectively. Services: A Life Celebration Service will be held 12 p.m. Tuesday in Grace Lutheran Church, 300 Roseberry St., Phillipsburg. Calling hours will be 10:30 a.m. to time of service Tuesday in the church. Interment will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine, 3501 Green Pond Rd., Easton. Arrangements are by the Rupell Funeral Home, 465 Memorial Parkway, Phillipsburg.
