Williams, George
Dr. George Williams, 69, professor emeritus of Burlington County College, died Wednesday, April 14
of colon cancer at his home in Medford Lakes where he lived for 32 years.
Born in Buffalo, NY, he earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Buffalo in 1958. While teaching English at South Park High School, he earned an MA in Philosophy. Offered a fellowship at the university, he returned full time to his studies, and was awarded a Ph.D. in philosophy in 1968. His dissertation advisor was the world famous philosopher, Dr. Marvin Farber
After two years as an associate professor of philosophy at The College of St. Rose in Albany, he began his 27-year tenure at Burlington County College where he was promoted to full professor in 1980. A popular yet controversial figure on the campus, he was in 1997 elected to the Chi Iota Faculty Hall of Fame for his "contribution to excellence in education." He taught an evening course in philosophy to convicts at Yardsville Prison and befriended and guided several of the ex-convicts when they were released. Dr. Williams also inspired many of the students on campus and kept in touch with them after his retirement. Robert Wolf Esq., a former student, said from his office in the Camden County Public Defenders office, "Dr., Williams' passion for teaching will survive in the students whose lives he changed forever."
When during his early years at BCC, Dr. Williams realized that students had difficulty understanding the original sources which he required them to read, he devised study guides to aid them. Out of these study guides evolved MAN ASKS WHY, A PROGRAMMED SOURCE BOOK OF PHILOSOPHY, 1973. The branched program which he created in Man Asks Why was a forerunner of today's computerized learning programs. The textbook was used in Dr. Williams' Introduction to Philosophy course and adopted on other campuses. The second edition of MAN ASKS WHY, 1981, includes an article by Dr. Gregory Ross, philosopher, East Carolina University and George Semb, human development specialist, University of Kansas. The article, "Philosophy Can Teach Critical Thinking Skills, " reports how the two professors tested and evaluated the effect Dr. Williams' techniques had on students' ability to reason.
His daughter KC as describes a man of many talents and interests Dr. Williams a "complex and multi-faceted man: a philosopher, an artist and an activist committed to social and environmental issues." The walls of his home are decorated with the pen and ink drawings he made on his travels throughout the US, Europe and Latin America. An avid cinema fan, Dr. Williams has collected over the years several hundred tapes (Beta and VHS) and DVDs of movies he loves. They range from EUROPA to FANTASIA. An amateur actor in his youth, his love of theater took him to many local productions as well as several London theater marathons during which he attended a dozen plays in two weeks, including the West End, the Fringe, and Stratford-on-Avon. For many years he traveled each summer to the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ont. And the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake. He sponsored anti-war teach-ins in the 60s and marched in many peace demonstrations.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Della (nee Burgio), daughter KC Williams of NYC and, sister, Irene Diamant, also of NYC.
A memorial service will be held at Bradley Funeral Home, Rt. 73 and Evesham Road, Marlton the morning of April 24 (10am - 12pm) In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The George Williams Memorial Fund at Green Peace.
