MULLIGAN, Robert J., Jr. Esq.
Life was not a spectator sport for Robert J. "Bob, the Natural" Mulligan, Jr., Esq., 56, an attorney who continued to practice law and play semi-pro baseball on several teams until shortly before his death at home in Voorhees, New Jersey, on August 26, from adenocarcinoma of the esophagus. Postponing treatment for a few weeks after his diagnosis, Robert traveled to Australia to play baseball in the 2002 World Master's Games.
A graduate of St. Joseph's College and Temple Law School, Robert, a solo practitioner, championed the legal rights of individuals, especially disadvantaged persons whose civil rights have been violated. Proud to be known as a liberal Democrat, Robert made an unsuccessful bid for U.S. Congress at age 28, and over later years earned a reputation as one of Philadelphia's most skilled election law attorneys, volunteering his time and legal expertise to the Gore campaign in the aftermath of the disputed 2000 presidential election.
Robert astounded and inspired others with his boundless energy and strength, cheerful persistence in the face of adversity, keen intellect and thirst for knowledge, whether the subject was astrophysics, astronomy, the biological and chemical sciences, classical music, American musical theatre, or American and European history. With his wife, Madelyn, he hiked the American and Canadian Rockies, and the backcountry of Denali and Yellowstone National Park, and the far reaches of Barrow, Alaska. In 1998, he and his wife Madelyn, in a spirit of joie de vivre, using funds initially earmarked for retirement, flew the Concorde to Paris, and danced at the Palace of Versailles on New Year's Eve.
When there was no conflict with his baseball schedule, Robert could often be seen gardening and "conversing" with birds, squirrels, and other wildlife in the backyard of his home.
Robert is survived by his wife, Madelyn S. Quattrone, Esq., whom he married
in 1999 after a courtship that spanned two decades, loving stepdaughter, Nadine Quattrone; devoted brother, Brian Mulligan; sister Noreen LaFleur; five nieces and six nephews, former spouse Mary Ewing-Mulligan, and many friends and teammates.
