Beloved husband of 58 years of Evangeline Moshos (nee Kanillos) and loving father of Elizabeth and her husband, James Buley and Victoria Moshos. Dear grandfather of Alexander, Nicholas and Caroline and dear brother of Robert Moshos, the late Samuel Moshos and the late Demetra LaGuardia.

George J. Moshos was a pioneer computer scientist, researcher, teacher and author.

He was born January 28, 1923 in Tripoli, Greece. He was raised in Muskegon, Michigan. His college education was interrupted when WWII intervened. After Pearl Harbor he volunteered for the army. During the war he was stationed in the Pacific Theater and took part in the Okinawa invasion and campaign.

After the war he completed his education at the University of Michigan where he received a BS in Engineering (Physics), which was a new degree program top heavy in mathematics and science designed for a career in research. The same year he also received a MS degree in Physics, and later was awarded a PhD from Case Institute of Technology. Dr Moshos worked for the NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) Lewis Research Center (today it is known as the John Glenn Research Center of the NASA) in Cleveland which was the national agency conducting basic studies in aeronautic. His early work was in developing what at the time were called mathematical instruments, which today we call computers. These machines together with a collection of IBM punched card equipment were used to solve a wide range of complex mathematical problems in flight research. One application was to learn how dangerous icing formed on aircraft wings during flight. Another major project during this period was the first computer control robotic machine tool for fabricating complex machine parts.

Later when NACA was designated NASA with its expanded mission and computers became commercially available NASA installed and he managed the world's largest computing center. He was involved in the early space flights. He with his team provided mathematical consultation for the researchers and developed computer software tools for use by engineers for solving problems of space. A colleague's remark best describes Dr Moshos' grasp of the mathematical problems of space, "You can count that he will be well on his way solving a problem while others will be thinking if it can be solved". Typically when NASA designed and build a nuclear test reactor, Dr Moshos was assigned the safety calculations. One feature of the computer center was that it was integrated with the major research facilities located on-site which included a 10 by 10 supersonic wind tunnel, an 8 by 8 transonic wind tunnel, and a rocket test station. Dr Moshos with his staff provided the computer codes to retrieve the data during an experiment, reduce them by calculations and returned the results to the researcher immediately after the test rather than waiting months for the hand calculations as was the previous practice. After 17 years at NASA he moved to RCA Computer Division as Manager of Scientific Languages for their new computer line. Among the language systems he developed were the popular FORTRAN, SNOBOL and ALGOL language compilers.

Dr. Moshos moved on to start the Computer and Information Systems Department at Newark College of Engineering (later renamed New Jersey Institute of Technology) as its chairman of the faculty There he instituted several curriculums in computer studies; an undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Computer Science, a degree program in Information Systems, an MBA (a cooperative program with Rutgers), and off-campus programs in Computer Science in Madison, NJ and Moorestown, NJ. While today these programs are popular career paths and have the highest enrollments, it is hard to imagine that at the time many questioned the viability of these studies.

Dr. Moshos other professional activities included consulting services for General Motor, RCA, Department of Defense, and many others. He organize and served as Technical Program Director of several national and international professional conferences for the Association for Computing Machines (ACM) and the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE). Together with colleagues he organized local chapters of ACM and IEEE, and science fairs for secondary school students. He was a popular lecturer and motivational speaker at universities and industrial seminars and the author of professional books.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Funeral Service on Saturday at 11am at St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church 615 Mercer St. Cherry Hill.
