Menz, Marie V.
Marie V. Menz, 85, of Rio Grande, died on Saturday, March 23, 2002 from complications of heart disease. She will be mourned and remembered by the many people whose lives she touched.
With her husband, the late J. Franklin Menz, and her children, she opened and operated Menz's Seafood Restaurant, which is now in its 25th year, in Rio Grande. She was the iron hand in the velvet glove, which was attributed to its much success.
She met Franklin Menz when she went to work for him at age 17 in his first establishment, Menz's Restaurant on Route 47 in Millville. Three years later, they were married
. They were both active in community affairs, and Marie was president of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Mary Magdalen Church in Millville. They raised three children, Denise, Trudy, and Jay, during the 35 years of their partnership there before relocating to Cape May County and new enterprises, including an antique and gift shop, where she indulged her love of art, antiques, and flair for decorating. Twenty five years ago, those businesses gave way to their seafood restaurant, at the same site on Route 47.
Mrs. Menz was respected and admired by all she met, from celebrities to restaurant employees. She was known for strength, determination and quiet dignity. Her trademark red hair, which she always claimed should have been hers by the right of Irish birth, big earrings, and hats gave testament to her often stated appreciation of Mae West: "It's better to be looked over than to be overlooked!"
She is survived by two daughters, Denise and Trudy (Menz); a son, Jay; a brother, James Quinn, Sr. of Millville; five grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Franklin Menz, Sr. on November 24, 1992.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House and at her request, it will "not be boring". Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Raymond's Roman Catholic Church, Bayshore Road, Villas, where her attendance reached legendary proportions after she once attempted to walk the many miles to Mass when her car was broken down. She was picked up on Fulling Mill Road by a family friend, who drove her the rest of the way. Interment will be in Holy Cross cemetery, Millville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Raymond's Church.
