Appel, Jane

On July 14, 1926, in Rockville Centre, NY, Raymond Bradley and Gertrude Sanford Phillips, welcomed their second of three children. Between two sons, Raymond Bradley, Jr. and Charles Wesley, came a daughter, Jane. Popular child theorists of the time wrote that youngsters "should be seen, but not heard". Young Jane certainly fit this bill. The quiet girl was a thinker who began reading before going to school, writing stories by age 7 and at 9 years old, a full-length book, "The Way of the Farmer" in long hand. Jane's long career of excellent grades, photographic memory, and top test scores was established in the early grades.

Jane received free flute lessons in high school and developed into a soloist. At 16 she worked as a counselor at Sunshine Acres on Long Island, a Fresh Air camp for kids from Brooklyn. She met Sam Appel, the dishwasher and fellow flautist. They fell in love and Sam wrote her four love letters which Jane saved. She continued to write and longed to be a journalist, but choices were few for working class young people raised during the Depression. Through the wartime Cadet Nursing Corps, Jane was able to go to college at Wagner on Staten Island and complete a Registered Nurse's degree. Though she would never have picked the field under other circumstances, it would later enable her to get a night's work whenever her family needed the money. As a nurse cadet, Jane worked for the Visiting Nurses Association of New York City.

Jane met the flautist from Brooklyn again at Denton Lake when she was 21. Sitting across the table and recognizing him first, the shy girl uncharacteristically spoke first, "Do you still play the flute?" The romance rekindled and she married Sam two days after Christmas in 1948. After a stay in Rochester, NY, where Sam took prerequisite classes, repaired cars with his brother, Paul and Jane worked at a local hospital, the couple moved to Philadelphia. Jane's nursing degree helped again as Sam went to college and later theological seminary, pastored a small church and moonlit as a punch press operator at a can company. There, Jane gave birth to Sandra Jane in 1951, Joy Carol in 1953 and Timothy Paul in 1957. Sam's ministry changed courses and the family moved to South Jersey in the early 1960's. For some years, Jane worked nights full-time as head Nurse of Obstetrics at Cherry Hill Hospital. A job with the Moorestown Visiting Nurses Assn. provided a schedule better suited to a wife and mother of three children.

In the late 1960's Jane went back to college at night, thriving on the challenges and especially relishing her creative writing classes. She graduated in 1972 with a BA in Psychology. Later she would get a masters degree in Human Development from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Jane worked for a short time at the Camden Day Nursery, then, after receiving the highest score on a New Jersey Civil Service test, she became a Medicaid nurse for the state. It was at this time that she was able to intervene on behalf of many elderly, and often helpless, people so that their care in nursing homes would be improved. Her distrust of medical intervention and passion for the individual's right to decide in matters where quality of life is in question, became firmly rooted. Many years later, Jane's convictions were put to test and prevailed as she struggled with her own disease. Among Medicaid staff people there was a camaraderie and Jane developed a number of friendships, especially that of her gentle friend, Marie. Her last position with the state of NJ before retiring was that of Program Developer for Office of Home Care for Medicaid. During this time she assisted in the development of the Community Care Program for the Elderly and Disabled.

In 1991 Jane retired and looked forward to pursuing interests that did not involve driving to Trenton every day. She began volunteering at Larchmont Elementary School in a first and second grade class. Often she'd notice that little person whose issue went unnoticed in a busy classroom and provide the attention needed to make him/her feel better. Jane loved being a member of the literature group she joined and bonded with its leader, Edith. When a writing group grew out of the literature gathering, Jane began writing again. These writings now comprise a folder of her "Memoirs", including such pieces as, "First, Do No Harm", "Miss Florence Has Passed" and "With Praises and Cries from Children". Sam and Jane were able to do some traveling attending a number of hostels and were regulars at Joy and Rick's in Baltimore.

In 1996 Jane experienced flu-like symptoms and asked to be tested for lyme disease. A short course of antibiotics followed a positive result. The next year, she began to experience muscle weakening and was diagnosed with polymiositis, an autoimmune disorder. For the last three years Jane has lived her days in a wheelchair continuing to lose strength. Her favorite spot at the kitchen table was always piled with her cherished things - her memoirs, CD's, toiletries and most of all, newpapers! Those who know Jane best will remember her strong feelings about the national and world situation and her great disdain for politicians, one in particular. Their bright blue wheelchair equipped caravan carried Jane and Sam to their outings for lunch, most often to Carlucci's on the Waterfront where their favorite waiter, Fredrico, knew just what Jane liked most. He and all the other friendly staff became dear friends.

Each morning Jane would use her stick to poke the kitchen curtains open - her window to the world. There she watched sadly as her elderly neighbors, some with their own health issues, took their daily walks. She died in her own bed at 4:40 PM on Saturday, August 7th, 2004 with family gathered around her. Afterward, she lay there as they cried, talked, reminisced and said good-byes. Later, one nurse arrived to stand quietly by the bed then did needed paperwork off in the kitchen. Two polite men from the funeral home carried her frail body. All this would have made Jane smile - no bright lights, shift changes, I.V.'s or feeding tubes. And that smile would only be diminished by one other - her new one as she WALKS again. Hallelujah! Go, Jane!

Jane is survived by her husband, Sam, of 55 and 1/2 years; daughter, Sandie and son-in-law, Stu Layton, granddaughter, Darcy and grandson-in-law, Kevin Hagan, step granddaughters, Stacy and Stephanie Layton; her daughter, Joy, son-in-law, Rick Brown and grandson, Jordan; son, Tim, daughter-in-law, Debbie and grandson, Ryan; brothers, Raymond Bradley Phillips and sister-in-law, Ruth and Charles Wesley Phillips and sister-in-law, Maryanne; sister-in-law, Helen and husband Paul Laube; sister-in-law, Grace and husband Bill Harbach; sisters-in-law, Marion, Audrey and Marie Appel; a host of nieces and nephews and dear family and church friends.
