Samuel J. DeVito

Master Electrician
Samuel J. “Sam” DeVito, 84, of Rosenhayn died Monday morning October 14, 2002 at his home where he had been under the care of hospice.

The son of the late Vito and Angelina Pizzulli DeVito, he was born in Philadelphia and lived in St. Joseph’s Orphanage in Philadelphia until moving to Bridgeton with his family at age fourteen. A longtime resident of the Bridgeton area he lived on N. Laurel Street and also on Smith Avenue. He had been a resident of Rosenhayn for the past several years.

Mr. DeVito was a Master Electrician and worked for over thirty years at the Owens-Illinois Glass Company in Bridgeton.

He was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Bridgeton and was a US Navy Veteran of World War II, having seen active duty in the Asiatic/Pacific Theater.

In addition, he was a life member of the Meade-Woodward Post #1795 VFW of Bridgeton and a lifetime member of the Deerfield Township Elks Lodge #733.

At Owens he was a member of the Local Union #239 G.B.B.A.

He is survived by his companion of thirty-five years, Marjorie E. (nee McCormick) Strang, her children, Martha “Marti” Simonds, Judy Scott and Roy B. Williams, Marjorie’s ten grandchildren, including Ray A. Williams and Marjorie’s thirteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by one of Marjorie’s daughters, Nancy Santini. Mr. DeVito is also survived by two daughters, Angelina “Angel” Smith and Loretta “Lori” Newkirk, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one sister, Jeanette Filluzzi and a sister-in-law, Vicky DeVito. Additional survivors include several nieces and nephews including, Carmen, Tonetta, Mary Ann, Francis, Vito and his wife Linda, Antoinette, Joey and Jenny. He was predeceased by a son, Samuel DeVito Jr., two brothers, Carmen and Angelo DeVito and Angelo’s wife Mary DeVito.

The funeral will originate at 9 o’clock Friday morning October 18th and will be followed by a 10 o’clock Funeral Liturgy at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 312 N. Pearl St., Bridgeton.

The interment will be made at Laurel Lawn cemetery in Upper Deerfield Township.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Thursday evening between 7 and 9.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. DeVito’s memory to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 312 N. Pearl St., Bridgeton, N.J. 08302.

James R. Craft

Decorated US Marine
James R. Craft, 66, passed away Friday morning March 7, 2003 at his home in Vineland surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Bridgeton on July 9, 1936 to Harry Russell and Violet Wickersham Craft, he lived in Bridgeton until moving to Vineland in 1965.

Mr. Craft attended Bridgeton High School with the class of 1955 and received the Good Conduct Medal during his service in the US Marine Corps from which he retired in 1957.

He married his wife, the former Doris Parvin, in August of 1957.

A graduate of Cumberland County College with an Associates Degree in Administration, he served as the Executive Director of the City of Vineland Housing Authority for eighteen years until retiring in 1998. He was awarded the Distinguished Directors Award in 1994.

Jim was a member of the First Baptist Church of Vineland.

An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the NJ Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife Council and the NJ Fish and Game Council. He was a founding member and chairman of the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife Waterfowl Stamp Advisory Committee and a founding member of the South Jersey Sportsmen Federation. In addition, Jim was a member of the S.J. Sportsmen League, the Cumberland County Federation of Sportsmen, and the Atlantic County Federation of Sportsmen and was the first chairman of the NJ Migratory Waterfowl Advisory Committee.

A long time member of Ducks Unlimited, he was a former state trustee and NJ sponsor of Duck Unlimited International. He had served as past chairman of Cumberland County Ducks Unlimited. For several years, Jim served as a volunteer hunter education instructor.

He was a member of the Millville Elks Lodge #580 and the Woodstown Loyal Order of Moose.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, he will be missed by his wife Doris, his daughter, Susan Dickenson and her husband Ronald Jr. of Ewing and ten month old granddaughter, Adella Marie Dickenson. He is also survived by brother in law, Byron “Barney” Seibert of Upper Deerfield Township, sister in law, Carolyn Parvin Hannah and her husband Willis of Millville, niece, Karen Sparks, nephew, Gary Seibert and their families, nephews, James Hannah, Keith Hannah and nieces, Carolann DiPrimio and Barbara Shaw and their families. He was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Seibert and his mother in law, Alice Parvin.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning March 11th at 11 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton where friends will be received from 9 until 11.

The interment will be made at Siloam cemetery in Vineland.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Craft’s memory to HospiceCare of S.J., 2848 S. Delsea Drive, Vineland, N.J. 08360 or to the First Baptist Church, 1155 E. Landis Avenue, Vineland, N.J. 08360.

Sebastian J. “Ben” Jannelli

Bridgeton Resident
Sebastian J. “Ben” Jannelli, 75, of Hopewell Township died Monday March 10, 2003 at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center in Camden where he had been a patient for the last six days. He had been hospitalized for the past few weeks.

The husband of Geneva F. (nee Baker) Jannelli, he was born in Bridgeton and was a lifelong Bridgeton area resident. He had lived at his current address since 1967. Mr. Jannelli was the son of the late Carmen and Josephine Laspada Jannelli.

He worked for nearly thirty-five years at the former Owens-Illinois Glass Company in Bridgeton. At the time of his retirement he was a foreman in the forming department.

Mr. Jannelli attended Bridgeton High School with the Class of 1945 and left high school to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II receiving his high school diploma after the war.

He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Millville and was the assistant head usher. In addition, Mr. Jannelli and his wife had been “door greeters” at the church since 1982.

He was a former member of the National Rifle Association and had been a hunter. He enjoyed spending time in his workshop and working in his yard. He also loved to travel.

Mr. and Mrs. Jannelli had been married for the last fifty-seven and a half years. His family will remember him as a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and a friend to all.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Carmen T. Jannelli and his wife Jo Ann of Bridgeton, Douglas W. Jannelli and his wife Donna of Jacksonville, FL and Dr. Richard M. Jannelli and his wife Eva of Wilmington, DE, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Carmen J. Jannelli and his wife Joanne of Bridgeton, a sister in law, Catharine Jannelli Duffield of Hopewell Township, one uncle, James Laspada and his wife Ann of Bridgeton and several cousins, nieces and nephews. One brother, Thomas G. Jannelli, predeceased him in 1970.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning March 14th at 10 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton with Pastor Gerritt Kenyon of the First Assembly of God Church in Millville officiating.

The interment will be made at Overlook cemetery in Bridgeton.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Thursday evening after 7 o’clock.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Jannelli’s memory to the American Heart Association, 2550 Rt. 1, New Brunswick, N.J. 08902.

Elizabeth D. “Betty” Gray

Hopewell Twp Resident
Betty D. Gray (nee Matyger), 87, of Hopewell Township, died Monday afternoon at South Jersey Hospital – Bridgeton after a long illness.

The wife of the late John J. Gray who died in 1963, she was born in Camden and was the daughter of the late Frank and Jennie (nee Huysie) Matyger. She was a life long area resident. Mrs. Gray was a 1934 graduate of Bridgeton High School.

She was employed at M.C. Shrank and Val Mode as a presser and examiner for more than forty-two years. She retired in 1985.

Mrs. Gray enjoyed gardening and crocheting. She was a traveler who visited all over the United States.

Mrs. Gray was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception for over seventy six years. She was a member of the first eighth grade graduating class of Immaculate Conception School in 1930.

She is survived by one son, John G. Gray of Hopewell Township, one sister, Mary Sefton of Bridgeton, one niece, Virginia Atkins and her husband John of Bridgeton and by many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by one brother, William Matyger.

The funeral will originate at 9:30 Saturday morning March 15th at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton and will be followed by a 10 o’clock Funeral Liturgy at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 312 N. Pearl St., Bridgeton.

The interment will be made at St. Mary’s cemetery in Bridgeton.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Saturday morning between 8:30 and 9:30.
