Warren Pierson

Greenwich Twp Resident
Warren Pierson, 71, of Greenwich Township, died early Tuesday morning, October 8, 2002 at home.

The husband of Janet G. (nee Glaspey) Pierson, he was born in Greenwich and was a lifelong resident of Greenwich; having lived at his current address for the last forty-two years. He was the son of the late Arthur M. and Alna (nee Nieukirk) Pierson. He was a 1949 graduate of Bridgeton High School.

Mr. Pierson was self-employed as a dairy farmer and vegetable farmer for over sixty-five years and he also worked for the Cumberland County Road Department for seven years.

He was a proud member of the National Rifle Association who spent his free time hunting fox and deer. He was also a member of the Shiloh Deer Club.

In addition to his wife of forty-nine years, he is survived by one daughter, Beverly P. Arnold and her husband Barry of Greenwich, one grandson, Jeffery Robert Arnold, his step-mother Caroline Pierson of North Carolina, one sister, Nyla Jane Downs and her husband C. Robert of Greenwich and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by one son, Jeffery Walter Pierson.

Graveside services will be held Thursday afternoon, October 10, 2002 at 1 o’clock at the Greenwich Presbyterian cemetery, Ye Greate St. in Greenwich.

The service will be officiated by Pastor Leigh Holder-Bobo of the Greenwich Presbyterian Church. The interment will follow the service and the pallbearers will be Ben Lee Glaspey, Chris Glaspey, Barry Arnold, Robert Riggins, Kenneth Glaspey and C. Robert Downs.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Pierson’s memory to the Greenwich Presbyterian Church, Ye Greate St, Greenwich, NJ 08323 or to the Cumberland County S.P.C.A., 1376 W. Sherman Avenue, Vineland, NJ 08360.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of The Freitag Funeral Home, Bridgeton.

John D. Salsa

Upper Deerfield Twp Resident
John D. Salsa, 62, of Upper Deerfield Township and also of Rosenhayn died Wednesday afternoon October 9, 2002 at The Cumberland Manor following a brief illness.

The son of the late Frank Salsa Sr. and the late Dorothy Rabbai Salsa he was born in Bridgeton and was a lifetime area resident. He and his late brother, Frank Salsa Jr., who died in 2000, lived several months a year with their sister, Angeline Taylor and her late husband John in Upper Deerfield Township and an equal number of months of the year with another sister, Ruth Tedesco and her husband Morris in Rosenhayn. Prior to his parents’ death, John lived on Rosenhayn Avenue for nearly thirty-five years.

He was a lifetime member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Bridgeton and was a music lover. He enjoyed dancing, watching the Three Stooges, soap operas and professional wrestling on television.

Survivors include his six sisters, Angeline Taylor of Upper Deerfield Township, Benita Horning of Millville, Ruth Tedesco of Louisville, KY, Letitia Gardiner of Vineland, Dora Clemente of Las Vegas, NV and Esther Raab of Ocean, N.J. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles in the Rabbai family as well as several cousins in the Fiorani family.

The funeral will originate at 10:30 Monday morning October 14th at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton and will be followed by an 11 o’clock Funeral Liturgy at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 312 N. Pearl St., Bridgeton.

The interment will be made at St. Mary’s cemetery in Bridgeton.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Monday morning between 9 and 10:30.

Memorial contributions may be made in John’s memory to the Cumberland County Association of Retarded Citizens, 1680 W. Sherman Avenue, Vineland, N.J. 08360.

Lee A. Steller

Pittsgrove Twp Resident
Lee A. Steller, 66, of Pittsgrove died Thursday afternoon October 10, 2002 peacefully at his home from a long illness with prostate cancer.

He was born November 1, 1935 in Philadelphia and was the son of the late George and Lillian Hohlfeld Steller. Raised in Philadelphia, he was a graduate of the Germantown Academy. He later received a BS in Commerce from Grove City College. During his scholastic and collegiate career he was an outstanding swimmer and participated in both the 1952 and 1956 Olympic Trials.

Upon graduation from college in 1957 he was drafted into the US Army and was assigned to the 15th Infantry in Bamberg, Germany where he worked as message center chief for Headquarters Company. Following his discharge in 1959 he began working for the RCA Service Company in Cherry Hill. During his thirteen years at RCA Mr. Steller held numerous managerial positions in the Industrial Relations Department. In 1972 he served as Senior Vice President and Director of Human Resources for First Peoples Bank. Core States Bank purchased First Peoples in 1992 and he worked for three years assisting with mergers and acquisitions until retiring from banking in 1995. He accepted a part time position with Career Concepts, Inc., a management-consulting firm, where he worked for four years in outplacement and transition.

Mr. Steller had been a resident of Pittsgrove Township for the last seventeen years. Prior to that he lived in Pennsauken for twenty-five years. He was a member of member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Friesburg. He was a member of the Church Council and also sang in the choir. In addition, he was the chairman of the Stewardship Committee at the church also the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. An avid sportsman, Mr. Steller served for ten years, from 1960 until 1970 as the head swim coach for the AAU Moorestown Swim Club. During his tenure as coach he worked with more than 150 boys and girls annually as they enhanced their swimming skills for high school and collegiate competition.

In addition to his Ann (nee Irwin) Steller of forty-five years, he is survived by one son, Scott and his wife Lisa of Lenoir, NC, two daughters, Leslie Bitler and her husband James of Mohnton, PA and Julie Parenti and her husband Robert of Monrovia, MD and seven grandchildren whom he loved and adored, Kelsey and Amy Steller, Bradley and Marc Bitler and Anthony, Dominic and Deanna Parenti.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday afternoon October 16th at 4 o’clock at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 366 Cohansey-Friesburg Road, Alloway Township. Pastor Jim Jacobs and church’s pastor emeritus, Pastor Edgar Wiker will officiate.

The interment will be made privately at the Friesburg Lutheran cemetery in Alloway Township.

Memorial contributions are requested in lieu of flowers to the Emanuel Lutheran Church Building Expansion Fund, PO Box 213, Deerfield Street, N.J. 08313-0213.

Jean E. Uhland

Shiloh Resident
Jean E. Uhland (nee Robinson), 76, of Shiloh died Friday evening October 11, 2002 at S.J. Hospital – Bridgeton following a brief illness.

The wife of Lawrence “Barney” Uhland, she was born in Quinton Township and was the daughter of the late Earl and Reba Thompson Robinson. A life long area resident, she had been a resident of Shiloh for over fifty years.

Mrs. Uhland assisted her husband for several years in all aspects of his business, Barney’s Paint Shop, in Shiloh. Several years ago she worked briefly for Bell Telephone in Bridgeton and also the former Theber Corporation in Bridgeton.

A member of the St. Teresa of Avila R.C. Church, she was a longtime member of the Boots and Saddles Riding Club in Quinton Township. For many years she helped with riding club dinners and horse shows. In 1976 she led Shiloh’s parade commemorating American’s Bicentennial while on horseback and carrying an American Flag.

Mrs. Uhland liked casino trips, playing bingo, sewing and playing cards. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Uhland would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this December.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Madeline Bruso and her husband Dallus of Shiloh, Susan Williams and her husband Edison of Millville and Sharon St.Clair and her husband Jerry of Shiloh, four grandchildren, Jerry St.Clair Jr. and his wife Shannon, Kelli St.Clair, Brooke Waller and Holli Swift and her husband Mark, two great granddaughters, Johnisha “Jen” Milledge and Alexa St.Clair, one sister, Marie Mulford of Bridgeton, two brothers, Lee Robinson of Upper Deerfield Twp. and Warren Robinson of Bridgeton and several brothers and sisters-in-law. She was predeceased by brothers, Frank, Earl and Wayne Robinson.

The funeral will originate at 10 o’clock Tuesday morning October 15th at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton and will be followed by a 10:30 Funeral Liturgy at the St. Teresa of Avila R.C. Church, 46 Central Ave., Bridgeton.

The interment will be made at Fernwood Memorial Park in Hopewell Township.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Monday evening after 7 o’clock and Tuesday morning between 9 and 10.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1400 W. Landis Ave., Vineland, N.J. 08360.

James Darrell Smith

Fairfield Twp Resident
James Darrell Smith, 42, of Fairfield Township died unexpectedly Friday morning October 11, 2002. He had been stricken at home and rushed to S.J. Hospital – Bridgeton but died shortly after arrival.

The son of Helen J. (nee Donohue) Smith of Bridgeton and the late Kenneth Darrell Smith who died in1984, he was born in Clay, West Virginia and had been a Bridgeton resident most of his life. He lived on N. Laurel Street in Bridgeton for several years and for the last two years resided with his companion Helen Whildin in Fairfield Township.

He was employed as a packer at Courier Systems in Bridgeton.

Mr. Smith attended Bridgeton schools and played in the Bridgeton Little League.

In addition to his mother and companion he is survived by four children, James D. Smith Jr., Christopher Smith, Michael Orange and Kathy Orange and two brothers, Edward Ray Smith of Shiloh and David L. Smith of Bridgeton. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathy L. Smith, who died this past February.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday afternoon October 15th at 1 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton.

Cremation and inurnment took place at the Laurel Lawn Crematory in Upper Deerfield Township.
