Mary L. Hayslip

Stow Creek Twp Resident
Mary L. Hayslip (nee Skillern), 82, of Stow Creek Township died Tuesday morning May 28, 2002 at The Cumberland Manor in Hopewell Township where she had been a resident for nearly two years. Born in Chireno, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Albert B. and Ethie Butler Skillern and the wife of the late James D. Hayslip Sr., who died in 1989. A resident of Texas most of her life, she moved to Southern New Jersey shortly after her husband’s death and lived with her son, James D. Hayslip Jr. in Stow Creek Township until entering “The Manor.” Mrs. Hayslip was a registered nurse and received her nurses training at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. She worked for several years as an RN at Pasadena General Hospital and Pasadena Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Texas. She was a graduate of Woden High School in Woden, Texas and attended the Queens Road Baptist Church in Pasadena. In addition to her son, James D. Hayslip Jr. of Stow Creek Twp., she is survived by another son, Rev. Robert Charles Hayslip of Mentor, OH, eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one sister, Allie Mae Skillern Hill of Nacogdoches, TX and one brother, Lincoln Skillern of Silsbee, TX. She was predeceased by sisters Ima Skillern and Lois Skillern Hill. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon May 31st at 2 P.M. at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton. Rev. Dr. Frederick Goos, of HospiceCare of S.J. will officiate. The interment will be made at Laurel Lawn cemetery in Upper Deerfield Township. Friends will be received at the funeral home Friday afternoon one hour prior to the services.

Richard A. “Bud” Cramer Jr.

Vineland Resident
Richard A. “Bud” Cramer Jr., 54, of Vineland and formerly of Upper Deerfield Township died unexpectedly Wednesday May 29, 2002 at his home. He was born in Woodbury and was the son of Mary Sholtz Cramer of Millville and the late Richard A. Cramer Sr. A resident of Vineland for last six years, Mr. Cramer formerly lived in Upper Deerfield Township for several years. For the last thirty-four years, he was the warehouse manager for Mid Eastern Cold Storage Company in Vineland. He attended Woodstown High School and a member of Teamsters Local 676. In addition, Mr. Cramer was a member in the North Italy Club of Vineland He is survived by one son, Richard W. Cramer of Upper Deerfield Township, one daughter, Tammy L. Lloyd and her husband Jeff of Hopewell Township, one granddaughter, Elizabeth Kennedy Lloyd, three sisters, Carol Shetrompf of Millville, Nancy Woody of Hilliard, Florida and Joyce Cramer of Clayton and three brothers, Jack Cramer of Pittsgrove, and Kenny and Keith Cramer both of Millville. Funeral services will be held Monday morning June 3rd at 10 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton with Rev. Jeffrey W. Tilden of the Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. The interment will take place at Laurel Lawn cemetery, Upper Deerfield Township. Friends will be received at the funeral home Sunday evening from 6 until 8 and Monday morning from 9 to 10 prior to the service.

Albert Sherron Fogg Jr.

Stow Creek Twp Resident
Albert Sherron “Sonny” Fogg Jr., 58, of Stow Creek Township died Thursday afternoon May 30, 2002 at S.J. Hospital – Bridgeton. He was a hospital patient for the last week and had been under the care of hospice. Mr. Fogg was the husband of Martha Cohen (nee Breslin) Fogg and the son of the late Albert Sherron Fogg and the late Mary Flanegan Fogg. He was born in Bridgeton and had resided at the same Stow Creek Township address all his life. He was the president and part owner of Chestnut Run Farm in Stow Creek Township. For the last three years until this past February he worked in the maintenance department at Ranch Hope for Boys in Alloway. He also owned Al’s Mowing Service. Mr. Fogg graduated from Bridgeton High School in 1961 and had studied the weather as a younger man and always had a keen interest in weather patterns. He was a longtime member of the Cohansey Baptist Church, was a member of the church choir and a former Sunday School Superintendent. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Ethan Allen Fogg of McClure, PA, six grandchildren, Albert IV, Chelsea, Susannah, Noah, Joshua and Jacob Fogg and three step sons, Timothy A. Cohen of Canaan, NH, Arthur L.W. Cohen III and James E. Cohen both of North Cape May. He was predeceased by a son, Albert Sherron Fogg III in January of 2000 and a sister, Jane Fogg Stratton in June of 2000. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning June 4th at 11 o’clock at the Cohansey Baptist Church, 714 Roadstown Road, Roadstown. The church’s pastor, R. Bruce Johnson will officiate. The interment will be made in the church cemetery. Friends will be received at the church Tuesday morning one hour prior to the services. Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Fogg’s memory to the Cohansey Baptist Church Music Program, 714 Roadstown Road, Bridgeton, N.J. 08302. or Ranch Hope for Boys, P.O. Martha B. Oyler

Millville Resident
Martha B. Oyler (nee Unroe), 66, of Millville died Monday afternoon June 3, 2002 at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden. She had been a hospital patient on several occasions during the last six months. The daughter of the late Perry B. and Leona Susan Unroe, she was born in Clifton Forge, VA. Raised in Lowmoore, Virginia, she had been a resident of Southern New Jersey for most of her adult life. She had lived in Millville for the last ten years and prior to that lived in Carmel, Rosenhayn and also in Bridgeton. Mrs. Oyler worked at Owens-Illinois in Bridgeton and before retiring on a medical disability was employed a Kimble Glass in Vineland for fourteen years. She enjoyed playing and spending time with her grandson and granddaughter. At one time she bowled in a local bowling league and liked to do jigsaw puzzles. She is survived by two sons, Russell B. Oyler and his wife Ruth of Fairton and Curtis W. Hanks Jr. of Millville, with whom she had resided, one daughter, Ardena S. Speight and her husband Michael of Woodbury, two grandchildren, Joseph R. Oyler and Jillian N. Speight and one sister, Charlotte E. Sutton of Blythewood, SC. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Lunsford Unroe. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon June 6th at 2 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton. Pastor Donald Chroniger of the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Shiloh will officiate. The interment will be made at Fernwood Memorial Park in Hopewell Township. Friends will be received at the funeral home Thursday afternoon one hour prior to the services.

Lester H. Olbrich

Hopewell Twp Resident
Lester H. Olbrich, 72, of Hopewell Township died Saturday morning November 16, 2002 at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden. Even though he had been in declining health, his death was unexpected.

A lifelong area resident, Mr. Olbrich was born in Elmer and was the son of the late Paul Sr. and Lydia Cook Olbrich. Raised in Elmer, he had been a resident of Hopewell Township since 1957. A US Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served in France and later as a member of the US Army Reserve. In addition, he assisted and was a member of the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Mr. Olbrich worked as a young man on his family’s farm in Elmer and later worked for Pfeffer Express, also in Elmer. For most of his life, he was employed at the Owens-Illinois Glass Company in Bridgeton as a mold maker. He also worked as a mold maker at Wheaton Industries in Millville for twelve years before retiring in 1991. In his retirement years he worked with his son Don at Bridgeton Travel Trailer.

Mr. Olbrich was a member of the St. Teresa of Avila R.C. Church in Bridgeton and Shoemaker Post # 95 of the American Legion also in Bridgeton. Several years ago he bowled in the Owens Bowling League. For many years he enjoyed square dancing, working in his yard and garden and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Ethel Riggins Olbrich, three sons, Donald L. Olbrich Sr. and his wife Sandy of Bridgeton, Kenneth D. Olbrich and his wife Lucretia of Upper Deerfield Township and Russell T. Olbrich and his wife Sharon of Deerfield Township, seven grandchildren, Jamie, Holli, Christina, Ryan, Donald “D.J.” Jr., Zachary and Lea Olbrich, two step grandchildren, Angela and Jonathan Riley, three sisters, Bertha K. Burgess of Monroeville, Ethel Ivins of Forest, VA and Thelma Fitchhorn of Vacaville, CA and two brothers, Paul J. Olbrich of Monroeville and Charles B. Olbrich of Pittsgrove. He was preceded in death by three brothers, William, David and Joseph Olbrich.

The funeral will originate at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton Wednesday November 20th at 9:30 A.M. and will be followed by a 10 A.M. Funeral Liturgy at the St. Teresa of Avila R.C. Church, 46 Central Avenue, Bridgeton.

The interment will be made at Fernwood Memorial Park in Hopewell Township.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Tuesday evening after 7 o’clock and also Wednesday morning between 8:30 and 9:30.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Teresa of Avila R.C. Church, 46 Central Avenue, Bridgeton, N.J. 08302.

Margaret S. Donaghay

Retired Educator
Margaret (nee Sweeten) Henderson Donaghay, 78, died Sunday morning November 17, 2002, in Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida.

She was born in Alloway, New Jersey on December 12, 1923. She attended public school and graduated from Woodstown High School, Woodstown, New Jersey. She later received her bachelor’s degree at Wilmington College, Wilmington, Delaware and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration at Cheyney State College, Cheyney, Pennsylvania.

She was the first woman to serve as chief administration officer of a public college in New Jersey and was selected to be included in the World Who’s Who of Women and the Who’s Who of American Education.

In 1958, Mrs. Donaghay was selected to be the secretary of the newly established Salem County Vocational Technical Institute, New Jersey’s first post-secondary career education institution. As the Institute expanded, Mrs. Donaghay’s responsibilities grew to include the management of the administration office, director of the schools finances and Secretary to the Board of Trustees. She was instrumental in securing both state and federal funding to help the Institute to become a model of post-secondary education. She spent countless hours as a registered lobbyist representing the Governor of New Jersey in Washington D.C. for funding for Salem County Vocational Technical Institute and for vocational education for New Jersey Department of Education. Her leadership played a key role in the transformation of the Technical Institute into Salem Community college in 1972. She was selected as the Vice President of Administration of the new college and directed its business activities.

Mrs. Donaghay retired in 1977 and relocated to Tampa Florida in 1978. In 1980 she volunteered her expertise to develop the baccalaureate nursing program at the University of Tampa. The University honored her for her work and she served as the first director of the new program.

She was a long time member of the Davis Islands Garden Club of Tampa and was a noted artisan and collector of porcelain and china dolls.

She is survived by her loving children, son Joseph Henderson of Long Beach, California; daughters Margaret Davis, Jane Hitchner and Jean Aertker, grandchildren Kristina Cloversettle and Katherine Aertker and three great grandchildren all of Tampa, Florida; two sisters, Lily Hitchner and Ruth Gervert of Alloway, New Jersey; and a brother, Clifford Sweeten of Oakwood Beach, New Jersey and Tavares, Florida.

Graveside services and interment will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2002 at 11 A.M. at Overlook cemetery in Bridgeton, New Jersey.

There will be a memorial service held at her home in Tampa, Florida on November 19, 2002 at 7 P.M. for family and friends.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton, NJ.

Benjamin Strang Jr.

Bridgeton Resident
Benjamin Strang Jr., 96, of Bridgeton died Monday afternoon November 18, 2002 at The Cumberland Manor in Hopewell Township. He had been a resident of “The Manor” since the beginning of November and in declining health for several months.

Predeceased in 1993 by his wife of sixty-five years, Mildred Young Strang, he was the son of the late Benjamin L. Sr. and Lillian Harris Strang. He was born in Salem and raised in Bridgeton and was the last surviving of nine children. Mr. Strang had lived at his current Bridgeton address since 1941 and most recently had been a resident of the Goldfinch House before entering the nursing home.

He began working as a young boy on a local farm and at age seventeen started as a laborer at the former Cumberland Glassworks in Bridgeton. He later worked for their successor, the Owens-Illinois Glass Company in Bridgeton, as a foreman on D-Shift until retiring at age sixty-five. In his younger days he served as a “water boy” during the construction of State Route 77.

Following his retirement Mr. Strang enjoyed traveling. Fly fishing, walking and reading were also longtime hobbies.

Survivors include one son, Benjamin A. Strang and his wife Janet of Fairton, one daughter, Gwendolyn L. Carman of Mullica Hill, nine grandchildren, Allen S. Carman III, Craig E. Carman, Lynne Hallanan, Wendy Carman, Melissa Hoffner, Leeann Bruzek, Darlene S. Freitag, Benjamin M. Strang and Gina Stoto and twenty great grandchildren. Mr. Strang was predeceased by his son-in-law, Allen S. Carman Jr., two sisters, Ella Wade and Lillian Rehm and six brothers, Edward, George, Harry, Elmer, Earl and Randall Strang.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning November 22nd at 11 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton with Pastor John Robbins of the Haleyville-Mauricetown United Methodist Parish officiating.

The interment will be made at Overlook cemetery in Bridgeton.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Friday morning one hour prior to the services.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Strang’s memory to HospiceCare of S.J., 2848 S. Delsea Drive, Vineland, N.J. 08360.
