Essig, Charles H.
Charles H. Essig, age 92, of Dennis Township, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, September 27, 2010. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 8, 1918.
Charles served his country honorably during World War II in the Army Signal Corps. He retired after forty two years in 1980 from the Septa Transit System of Philadelphia.
He was a member of the Richard White Memorial American Legion Post #925 in Philadelphia. In better days, Charles enjoyed raising homing pigeons, yard sales, cooking and playing bingo at the Dennis Twp. Senior Center. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Florence.
He is survived by two sons: Carl and his wife, Julia, and Paul and his wife, Rosemarie; grandchildren: Carl, Jr. (Catherine); Jeffrey (Heidi); Julie (James); Todd and Craig; and great grandchildren: Jay, Justin, Jackieana, Chris, Todd, Jr., Jacob, Lucy, Paige Alizabeth, Madison and Maria.
A viewing will be held 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon on Thursday, September 30, 2010, at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House, NJ. A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 1, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Whitemarsh Memorial Park, Prospectville, PA. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Smith, Donald Francis
Navy
Donald Francis Smith, age 81, of Avalon, NJ, passed away on September 27, 2010.
Don was born in South Orange, NJ. He was the only child of Donald A. and Gertrude M. Smith. His father had been a member of the first professional football team, and later coached high school football. Don’s Great-Grandfather was John A. Radel, founder of the Trolley Car Lines of (Newark) NJ. Don was raised by his mother and his grandfather, Conrad Koellhoffer, and had the support of a community of relatives, friends, and neighbors.
Don’s great-uncle, Dr. Dennis O’Connor, put him through college at Villanova University and Michigan State University. To support himself, while in school in Pennsylvania, he took jobs cleaning oil refinery tanks. Don had a lifelong love of basketball, and continued to support the Villanova Wildcats. He finished his BS in Business at the Kellogg School, Northwestern University, Class of 1952.
He joined the Navy, right out of college, during the Korean Conflict, and served for almost four years as a Lt. J.G. in the Supply Corps, on the U.S.S. Palau, out of Philadelphia, PA, and on the U.S.S. Damato, out of Norfolk, VA.
Don married his college sweetheart, Arden, in June, 1953.
After his service in the Navy, Don moved his family to Chatham, NJ. He worked in New York City for W. R. Grace, as a Financial and Budget Analyst. He developed the company's initial LRP and the Corporate Administrative Controls Department. He also attended NYU, where he received his MBA. The Smiths moved to Convent Station in 1960, and Don began working for American Metal Climax, where he held a broad range of Financial Management positions, including overseeing the installation of the first corporate computers. He continued his doctoral studies at Columbia University, and also attended Fairleigh Dickinson and Drew University, to take Cobol, Fortran, calculus, and related business and computer language classes.
In 1967, Don became Corporate Controller of Gulf & Western, where he oversaw the acquisition of Paramount Pictures, which became the Paramount Leisure-Time Group. He operated five divisions, with 140 international subsidiary companies, and revolutionized their accounting information systems. His job included travels to movie and recording studios, owned by Paramount Pictures, and Don always had interesting stories to tell about his visits!
Don's entrepreneurial spirit, along with his zest for corporate expansion and financial efficiency, led him to his next post, as CFO and VP of Corporate Development at the Franklin Mint, in Media, PA. As President of the Ventures Division, Don traveled around the world, personally cultivating relationships with the best manufacturers, artisans, publishers, and banking institutions. He is responsible for the acquisition and production of the top of the line of the Mint's collections of crystal, pewter, sculpture, jewelry, china, furniture, art, and the leather-bound book collections. His diversification plan resulted in a 700% growth (of profits) for the company. In 1973, Don played an instrumental part in the coining of the United Nations’ Peace Medal, and his name is engraved on a plaque in the UN building, in NYC.
Summer residents of Cape May and Avalon, since 1961, Don and his family moved to Avalon, permanently, in 1978. He began a new career in real estate, while continuing his business career in consulting. Don and his wife, Arden, opened Home Sellers Center, the first independent no-commission real estate office on the Northeast Coast. They had offices in Cape May Court House and Atlantic City, and specialized in both residential and commercial properties. Don later worked for Avalon Real Estate and with the Leahys at American Eagle Realty. He also assisted his wife, Arden, a broker at Diller & Fisher Realtors, in Stone Harbor.
One of the achievements of which Don was most proud, was his formulation of the first Reverse Mortgage, as a consultant for Colonial Penn Insurance Co.
The perennial student, Don continued to attend local colleges in southern New Jersey, to study everything from Marketing to the German language.
Don is survived by his wife of 57 years, Arden N. (Youngblood), their three children: Deborah, Bradford, and Stacey, and four grandchildren: Brian, Kerrie, Garrett, and Marshall.

Harris, David Myron
HARRIS, DAVID MYRON, age 62, formerly of North Wildwood, died peacefully on Sunday, September 26, 2010, at the Oceana Nursing Center, Cape May Court House.
He was born in New Jersey, and lived in this area many years. He was a cab driver.
A loving father and grandfather, he is survived by two grandsons: Christopher Harris and Brandan Harris Greisser. He was preceded in death by his only son, Jason, in 2009.
Graveside services will be on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at Seaside cemetery, Shore Road, Palermo.
Giampa, Carolyn R.
Carolyn R. Giampa, 63, of Cape May Court House, passed away on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at Cape Regional Medical Center. Born in Sea Isle City to the late Frank and Anna G. (Hassiepen) Giampa, she was a longtime resident of Avalon before moving to Cape May Court House 25 years ago. She was formerly employed as food service director at Crest Haven Nursing Home.
Carolyn was very talented with crafts and ceramics. She was an artist when it came to decorations and centerpieces for weddings. She will always be remembered for her generous spirit and her cooking.
Carolyn is survived by her sister, Anna Auerbach of Gloucester City; her niece, Andria Auerrell; her nephew, Scott Auerbach; her three great nieces, Sierra, Ruby, and Sofia; one great nephew, Anthony; her aunts, Rose Wells and Helen Sheppard; and many cousins and godchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 27, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House, where visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be in Goshen Methodist cemetery. Lynch, Robert R.
National Guard
Robert R. Lynch, 81, passed away on September 22 after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Newark, on July 23, 1929, graduated from Seton Hall and received his MBA from NYU. He married the love of his life, Tonia, on June 21, 1952. He served in the National Guard and began his career with Merck, Sharp & Dohme in Rahway, moving on to Aetna Life in CT and finally retiring from Penn Mutual Life Insur. Co. in Phila. as the Senior VP of Administration in 1983. All through his life, Bob acted as a career coach and life mentor, not only to family but to a multitude of friends and acquaintances.
He was a devoted father, coaching his children's sports teams and acting as his children's and grandchildren's number one fan.
The doors were always open at the Lynch household. Many people consider themselves adoptive children of the Lynch's having spent time there, some for a short visit, some for a longer stay. This included a foreign exchange student from Turkey, Akin Cetin, who spent 6 years growing up in the Lynch household. All were subject to Bob's gentle career guidance questions about career planning, colleges, pensions, religion and discussions on the politics of the day.
He participated in many organizations including the Board of Trustees of Peirce College as Chairman, the Business Advisory Board of La Salle Univ., board of the Education for Parish Service of Trinity College in Washington, DC., and most recently, as co-chair of the Sea Isle City Town Watch/Town Pride and was the editor of their newsletter. He was devoted to making his beloved community of Sea Isle a better place for all those who enjoyed the seaside town.
He was an active participant in his parishes in NJ and FL. He served on the Liturgy Committee for Christ the King in Haddonfield, a leader of bible study and RCIA for St. Williams in Naples, FL and served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister for both parishes as well as St. Joseph's Church in Sea Isle City.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Tonia, his daughters Roberta (Maggie Lehr), Maureen (Monica Deckers) and Janice, his sons Matthew (Margie), Justin (Anne), Rob (Brooke) and grandchildren Jack, Kat, Julia, Erin, Matthew, Andrew, Lauren and Ryan as well as his brother Joseph and his wife Anne of Fort Meyers, FL.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11am, Saturday, September 25 at St. Joseph's Church in Sea Isle City, NJ. The family will receive visitors beginning at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's name can be made to St. Joseph's Bldg Fund.
Zimmerman, Marie S.
Marie S. Zimmerman, of Dennisville, formerly of Villas, passed away on her 80th birthday, Wednesday, September 22, 2010. She was born in Philadelphia to the late Frank and Sophie (Szczepanski) Nagle and had lived in this area since 1971 except for living in Kissimmee, FL for 13 years. A former employee of Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, she was a member of St. Raymond's Church. She enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles, gardening, and flowers.
Mrs. Zimmerman is survived by her daughters, Marie S. McGowan and husband, Neil of Dennisville, Nancy J. Jones and husband, Harold of Villas, and Donna M. Gain and husband, Michael of Villas; her 19 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip J. Zimmerman, Sr.; her sons, Philip J. Zimmerman, Jr. and Thomas R. Zimmerman; and her grandson, Neil P. McGowan, Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House. Interment will be in Cold Spring Presbyterian cemetery. Gould, William T.
Army
William T. Gould, 80, of Cape May Court House, passed away on Monday, September 20, 2010. Born in Philadelphia to Louis and Margaret Gould, he worked as a bartender at the R Bar in Philadelphia after serving the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his children, Francis Cheety of CMCH, Theresa (Dennis) Wyatt of CMCH, and Diane Diamond of Wildwood; grandchildren, Joe, Samantha, Tara, Billy, April, Denay, Dennis, and Louis; and great grandchildren Aaron, Fantasya, Destiny, Jonathon, Christopher, and Bill. He was predeceased by his wife Dolly in 1978.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, September 24, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Notre Dame De La Mer, St. Ann's Church, 2900 Pacific Ave., Wildwood, NJ 08260. Interment is private.
Bodnar, Wanda M.
Bodnar, Wanda M., 89, of Wildwood, passed away on Friday, September 17, 2010 at her residence in the Lions Center. She was born in Philadelphia, PA and lived in Wildwood for over 50 years. She loved flea markets and had an eye for antiques. She was formerly employed by Acme Markets.
Mrs. Bodnar is survived by her children, Stanley Bodnar and wife, Daisy of South Dennis, and Barbara Maniscalco and husband, James of Palm Springs, CA; her four grandchildren, James P. Maniscalco, Nicole Clark, Jennifer Bodnar, and Tracey LeCates; her eight great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Billbrough, Burnetta
Billbrough, Burnetta, 67, of Cape May Court House passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Born in Philadelphia to Antonio and Maria Castaldi-Russo, she later lived and raised a family in Havertown before moving to Cape May Court House in 1997. She was a proud member of the Italian-American Club of Villas, NJ.
Burnetta is survived by her husband Robert; her children Robert (Susan) Billbrough, Jr. and Maria Billbrough; sisters Catherine (John) Fox and Maggie (Marie) Russo; grandchildren Sam, Hannah, and Matt; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Millie Zoria, Rosie Russo, and Angie Russo.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Ave., Cape May Court House, NJ 08210. Viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m. Interment will be at Fernwood cemetery in Lansdowne, PA.
Trombetta-Simpkins, Betty
Betty Trombetta-Simpkins, 78, of Cape May Court House passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2010. Born and raised in Goshen to William and Myrtle Mason-Tomlin, she later worked as a seamstress in Wildwood. She was a member of Our Lady Of The Angels Church, the Wildwood Women's Bowling League, and the Democrat Club. Betty was an avid card player and talented harmonica player. She loved to cook and spend time with her family.
Betty is survived by her children Debbie (Billy) Adams of Cape May Court House, Joe (Sharon) Trombetta of Cape May Court House, and Mary (Charles) Trombetta-Pessagno of Galloway; her sister Martha Steelman and brother Maurice Tomlin both of Dennisville; grandchildren Bill Adams III, Jaime Adams, Al Trombetta, and Katie Trombetta; as well as three great grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by her husband Russell Simpkins in 2009, her son James in 1962, and her first husband Albert Trombetta in 1963.
