Sandra M. (Barbarotta) Policastro, 88, of Hazlet, passed away, Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.

Born in Newark, she resided in the Vailsburg section, before moving to Hazlet 28 years ago. She was a communicant of St. Benedict’s Church; a homemaker; a member of the Strawberry Patch Sewing Club, Hazlet; and the Poricy Park Quilters.

Sandra was predeceased by her husband, Frank Policastro in 1980; a sister, Jane Micchelli; and a brother, Ben Barbarotta. Surviving are two daughters, Catherine and her husband, John, who was like a son to her, of Hazlet; and Linda Nausedas of Middletown; a brother, Dominick Barbarotta of New Brunswick; grandchildren, Pamela and her fiancé, Dave; Sandra and her husband, Robert; Jim and Laura; and one great grandson, Andrew John.

Family and friends are invited Saturday, 3-5PM and Sunday, 2-4 & 7-9PM at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport, and Monday, 9AM, at the funeral home, with a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Benedict’s Church, Holmdel. Interment to follow at Hollywood Cemetery, Union.

Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA of Central Jersey.

Anthony Almeida Fonseca, 68, of Matawan, formerly of North Carolina, passed away in Jamesburg on Tuesday, March 17, 2009.

He was born in Jamaica, Queens. Before retiring, he was a carpenter for 35 years with the NJ Carpenters Local #1342. Anthony enjoyed doing arts and crafts; gardening; and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be remembered for his friendly and outgoing personality that made him friends wherever he went.

Anthony was predeceased by a son, Joseph Fonseca; two sisters, Rose DeOlivera and Lena Pawlikowski; and two brothers, John Fonseca and Manuel Fonseca. He is survived by his wife, Theresa Truelove Fonseca; five children, Donna Hallahan of Middletown, NY; Tony Fonseca of Jamesburg; Donald Fonseca of Spotswood; Elisa Intravartola of Jamesburg; and Richard Allegro of Spotswood; two stepchildren, Deborah Sykes of FL; and Ronald Almasy of Newark; a sister, Mary DeOlivera; 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited Thursday, 2-4 & 7-9PM at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport; and Friday, 9: 30AM, with a 10AM funeral service. Interment to follow at Cloverleaf Cemetery, Woodbridge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Anthony to the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey, 1100 Wayside Road, Tinton Falls, NJ 07712.

Lisa Marie Handel, 51, CREAM RIDGE – died Friday, March 13, 2009 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. She was 51.

Born in Orange, she was raised in Morganville and was a long time resident of Cream Ridge. Lisa attended UCLA and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, and completed two years of Law School at the University of South Western School of Law in CA.

She was predeceased by her beloved mother, Rosina Handel.
She is survived by her beloved family: her father, Henry J. Handel, sister Dina, brothers Henry and Eric. Also sister in law Kathleen, niece Christy Rose, nephew Eric Jr. and long time friend James Luckowitz.

Lisa was passionate for helping others; she created as founder and president a non profit 501(c)3 called Nature’s Refuge, an organization created to care for abandoned and abused animals and teach respect and unconditional love for all life.

Lisa’s wish was to be cremated, as she did not desire a service or viewing.

In lieu of flowers or cards, her wishes would be to send a donation to Nature’s Refuge, 3164 Chariot Court, Manchester, NJ 08759, so Lisa can continue to help in spirit.

Dorothy (Beladino) DiNardo, 76, of Manchester, passed away, Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.

Born in Mt. Vernon, NY, she resided in Hazlet most of her life, before moving to Manchester six years ago. For 30 years, she was a waitress at Bahr’s Landing, Highlands, retiring 15 years ago. She was a former communicant of St. Joseph RC Church, Keyport.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Claude DiNardo, in 1981. Surviving is her son and daughter-in-law, James C. and Doreen DiNardo of Hazlet; her daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Rudy Monti of Morris Plains; her siblings, Joseph Beladino of Florida; James Beladino of NY; Louise Docherty of Indiana; Evelyn Hughes of Indiana; and John Beladino of Tennessee; and her grandchildren, James and his wife, Amy; James; Matthew and Anthony.

Family and friends are invited Sunday, 2-6PM at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport; and Monday, 9: 45AM at the funeral home, with a 10: 30AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph RC Church. Interment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Keyport.

Caroline B. Karpinski, 78, of Hazlet, passed away, Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, New Brunswick.

She was born and resided in Newark, before moving to Hazlet 51 years ago. She was a homemaker; a communicant of St. Benedict’s RC Church, Holmdel; a member of the Hazlet Senior Citizens; a former member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary #3402, Keyport; and a former softball coach, Hazlet.

Caroline was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. Karpinski, in 1984. She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-laws, Robert and Jennifer Karpinski of Freehold; Richard and Johna of Asbury Park; two daughters and son-in-laws, Karen and Drew Fuhrmann of Hampton, N.H.; and Lisa and Daniel Earl of Wall; and four grandchildren, Kimberly, Emily and Lauren Karpinski; and Meagan Earl.

Family and friends are invited Friday, 2-4 & 7-9PM at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport; and Saturday, 8: 45AM at the funeral home, with a 9: 45AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Benedict’s RC Church, Holmdel. Interment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Keyport.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Caroline’s memory to the American Cancer Society.

Betty “Jane” Uptegrove, 80, of Hazlet, passed away, Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Bayshore Health Care, Holmdel.

She resided in East Orange, before moving to Hazlet 51 years ago. She was a homemaker; a communicant of Holy Family RC Church, Union Beach; a member of the Altar Rosary Society; she was the Rosarian of the Year in 2003; and she made the Christening Bibs for all the Baptisms at Holy Family Church.

Jane was predeceased by her parents, Conrad Butz and Margaret Berry; five brothers, Albert, Nicholas, William, Anthony and Ray Adamik; and a sister, Barbara Claypoole. Surviving is her husband, Edward Uptegrove; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Jean Uptegrove of Union Beach; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Mark Severance, Centerville, OH; five siblings, Elizabeth Fitzsimmons of Springfield; Alberta Smith of Apollo, PA; Dennis Berry of Clark; Kevin Berry of CA and Louise Reynolds of Atlanta, GA; and six grandchildren, Mark Jr, Jennifer and Erin Uptegrove, and Christopher, David and Ryan Severance.

Family and friends are invited Friday, 2-4 & 7-9PM, at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport, and Saturday, 9AM, with a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Family RC Church, Union Beach. Entombment to follow at Holmdel Mausoleum, Holmdel.

Elizabeth P. Magnussen, 84, of Lakewood, passed away, Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.

Born in NYC, she resided in Staten Island and Pennsylvania, before moving to Lakewood 14 years ago. She was employed as a legal secretary with Bethlehem Steel, NYC and PA for 25 years before retiring.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Harold Magnussen in 1999. Surviving are her children and their spouses; Raymond and Phyllis Magnussen of Elizabeth; Eileen and John Lepardo of Lakewood; and Victoria and Rick Mastropolo of Old Bridge; three sisters, Mary Neville of Norwood; Catherine Vandenburg of NJ; and Theresa Cafferata of Staten Island; nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, with one on the way.

Family and friends are invited Sunday, 2-4 & 7-9PM at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport, NJ; and Monday, 8: 30AM, with a 9: 15AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph RC Church, Keyport. Entombment to follow at Cloverleaf Memorial Gardens, Woodbridge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Elizabeth to the American Cancer Society or the Visiting Nurses Association.

John P. “Bibs” Thornton, Sr., 59, of Keyport, passed away, Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at St. Barnabus Hospice at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch.

Born in the Bronx, NY, he resided in Cliffwood Beach, before moving to Keyport 25 years ago. He was a scientist in the Research and Development Department with IFF, Hazlet, for 28 years. He served his country in the Army during Vietnam; and he was a communicant with Jesus the Lord Church, Keyport.

John was predeceased by a brother, Christopher Thornton in 2004. Surviving are his wife, Annette Mangino Thornton; two sons, John Thornton, Jr. of Loch Arbour; and Joseph P. Thornton of Long Branch; and a daughter, Elizabeth Rose of Keyport; three brothers, Thomas Thornton of Tuckerton; William Thornton of Humble, TX; and Joseph Thornton of Leonardo; three sisters, Mary Bane and Tootsie Thornton, both of Leonardo; and Jacqui Hillman of Atlantic Highlands; and one granddaughter.

Family and friends are invited Sunday, 2-4 & 7-9PM for a memorial gathering at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport. A Memorial Mass will be offered on Monday, 10AM, at Jesus the Lord Church, Keyport. Cremation was private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made directly to the family.

Josephine Louise (Dinowski) DePrima, 86, of Cliffwood/Aberdeen Twp., passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Bayshore Community Hospital.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, she resided in Orange, before moving to Cliffwood 21 years ago. She worked as an assembler with Bates Manufacturing, Orange, for 30 years, retiring in 1968.

Josephine was predeceased by her husband, Dominick DePrima; and a sister, Dorothy Hummel. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Cremation was private. Burial of cremains will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2009, 11AM at Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet.

Marion T. Abbate, 91, of Hazlet, passed away, Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank.

Born in Newark, she was a lifelong resident of Hazlet. She was a packer at Charles of the Ritz for ten years, retiring in 1980.

Marion was predeceased by four sisters. Surviving is her husband, Generoso G. Abbate; a son, Eugene Abbate of Newark; a grandson, Adam Abbate and a great grandchild, Alexis Abbate.

Family and friends, Tuesday, 2-4 & 7-9PM at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport. On Wednesday, there is a 9: 45AM Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Family RC Church, Union Beach. Interment to follow at Hollywood Memorial Park, Union.
