Stuart Ratner
Stuart M. Ratner, 77, of Lake Worth, Fla., formerly of West Orange, died on March 8. He was an orthodontist in West Orange for 35 years.
Mr. Ratner is survived by his wife Edith, daughter Joanne Foxxe, son James, and grandchildren Eli and Delaney.
Peter P. Augustitus
Peter P. Augustitus, 89, of West Orange died March 16 at home.
Mr. Augustitus owned and operated Augustitus Plumbing and Heating Co., Clifton, for 40 years before retiring in 1984.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
He was a member of the New Jersey Devils Fan Club.
Born in Gilberton, Pa., he lived in Clifton and Cedar Grove before moving to West Orange three years ago.
Surviving are sons, Richard, Michael and Robert; a sister, Margaret Dalton, and five grandchildren.
Deborah Sue Banford
Deborah Sue Banford, 51, a lifelong West Orange resident, died March 14 in the Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston. Mrs. Banford worked for ShopRite in East Orange for 35 years.
She was a member of the Untied Federated Commercial Workers Union Local 1262.
Surviving are a son, Herbert Donker Jr.; a daughter, Danielle Tafro; her parents, Jane and John Wysocki; brothers, Edward, James, Thomas and Joseph Wysocki; sisters, Patricia Barry and Cathleen Fisher; four grandchildren, and her companion, John Manee.
Helen Jane Fleming
Helen Jane Fleming, 91, of Point Pleasant died March 14 at the Claremont Care Center in Point Pleasant.
Mrs. Fleming was a bookkeeper at the Empress Hotel in Asbury Park during the 1970s.
She was a bingo volunteer at Holy Innocents Church.
Born in Newark, she lived in West Orange, Wall Township and Neptune before moving to Point Pleasant 20 years ago.
Surviving are a daughter, Mildred Fraley; sons, G.P., John, Vincent Jr. and Kevin; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pearl S. Bragman
Pearl S. Bragman, 84, of West Orange died March 13 in the Daughters of Israel Geriatric Center, West Orange.
Mrs. Bragman was a member of the Livingston Chapter of Deborah Heart and Lung and one of first volunteers at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
Born in New York City, she lived in Livingston before moving to West Orange 40 years ago.
Surviving are Donald, her husband of 63 years; a son, Dr. Jeffrey Bragman; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Helen M. Davies
Helen M. Davies, 79, of West Orange died March 13 in St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. Mrs. Davies was a former inspector for Monroe Calculator in Orange, as well as a cafeteria worker for the West Orange Board of Education for many years.
She was a volunteer at St. Johns School, Orange, and a teacher of English as a second language.
A native of Orange, she moved to West Orange 50 years ago.
Surviving are a son, Kenneth; daughters, Maureen Brock and Marilyn Flannery; a brother, Richard Killoran, and six grandchildren.
Richard Menkes
Richard A. Menkes, 86, of Maplewood, formerly of West Orange, died at his home on March 13. He was the husband of the late Doris Menkes and father of Doug of Berkeley Heights and Russell Menkes of New York City.
Mr.Menkes is survived by a sister, Barbara Ellison, of Arcadia, Calf. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Danny and Russell Menkes.
Wendell W. Wear
Wendell W. Wear, 90, of West Orange died March 13 in St. Cloud Health Center, West Orange.
Mr. Wear was a physical education teacher for the West Orange school system for 35 years before retiring many years ago.
He was also a football, basketball, track and baseball coach in the school system. Earlier, he worked in the same capacity for Altoona High School in Pennsylvania.
He was a 1938 graduate of Penn State University, State College, Pa.
Mr. Wear served in the Navy during World War II, where he played baseball on the Navy team with Ted Williams and John Pesky in addition to many other major- and minor-league players.
He was a life member of the Corinthian Lodge and Masonic Lodge in Montclair.
Born in Yagertown, Pa., he lived in Huntingdon, Pa., before moving to West Orange in 1946.
He was husband of the late Dorothy Biddle Wear.
Surviving are a son, Wendell B.; a daughter, Jane McMinn; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Frederick Allgeier
Frederick Allgeier, 85, of West Orange died March 12 at home. Mr. Allgeier retired 24 years ago as the vice president of the Suburban Propane Gas Corporation.
He earned a bachelor’s degree from Brown University, Providence, R.I., and a master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Business.
Mr. Allgeier served in the Army during World War II.
He was a lector at St. Josephs Church and a member of the K-9 Obedience Training Club of Essex County, the Stewards Club of America and the PAWS Animal Shelter in Montclair.
Born in Copper Cliff, Ontario, he lived in West Orange for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara; sons, Peter and Christopher; a daughter, Adrianne Brewer; sisters, Ruth Houghton and Eleanor Haney, and six grandchildren.
Margaret Allemand
Margaret Allemand, 71, of Livingston died March 12 in Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Mrs. Allemand was a secretary for the West Orange Board of Education for many years before retiring in 1999. Born in Orange, she lived in Livingston.
Surviving is a sister, Susan White.
Norman H. Friedman
Norman H. Friedman, 77, of West Orange died March 12 in the Daughters of Israel Geriatric Center in West Orange.
Mr. Friedman was a courier for the Sansone Auto Group in Avenel for five years before retiring in 2001. Earlier, he was a traffic manager for Carbon Dispersions in Newark for 20 years and a sales associate for several local freight companies.
He was a member of the Hillside Chapter of B’nai B’rith.
Born in Newark, he lived in Hillside and Springfield before moving to West Orange two years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Shola; a daughter, Terie Peterpaul; a son, Scott, and four grandchildren.
Peter Mancuso
Peter Mancuso, 82, of Bloomfield died March 11 in the Compassionate Care Hospice at the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care Center at East Orange.
Mr. Mancuso was a mail handler at the U.S. post office in Kearny for seven years before retiring in 1983. Previously, he was a clerk for Railway Express in Newark.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was a sergeant in the 9206th Technical Service Unit, Military Police, and served in Europe.
He was a member of various groups, including the West Orange Knights of Columbus, the Veterans of Foreign Wars in West Orange, American Legion Post 190, Orange, and was a volunteer for the Essex County Board of Elections.
Born in Newark, he lived in Orange for 50 years before moving to Bloomfield 12 years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Jane; daughters, Anne Marie Hertel, Jeannette and Roselyn Mancuso, and Cynthia Mindo; sons, Peter and Edwin; a sister, Angelina Breen, and three grandchildren.
Nettie Leven
Nettie Leven, 87, of West Orange died March 9 at home.
Mrs. Leven was a member of Hadassah and the Sisterhood of Temple Beth El, both in South Orange, and the Cedar Hill Country Club in Livingston. Mrs. Leven was a lion of Judah with the United Jewish Appeal of Essex County.
Born in Brooklyn, she lived in Maplewood and Newark before moving to West Orange 26 years ago.
Surviving are daughters, Barbara Muriello and Renee Baritz; a son, Joseph; a brother, Leo Geller, and seven grandchildren.
Sabino Sam Gallucci
Sabino Sam Gallucci, 82, of West Orange died March 12 at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston.
Mr. Gallucci was a shipping clerk for the Automatic Switch Co. in Orange before retiring in 1989.
Born in Orange, he lived in West Orange for most of his life.
Surviving are his wife, Claudette, and a sister, Edith Valvano.
Jennie L. Mongrella
Jennie L. Mongrella, 93, of West Orange died March 7 at home.
Mrs. Mongrella was a salesperson for F. W. Woolworths Department Store, West Orange, for 12 years before retiring in 1970.
She was a member of the Altar Rosary Society at St. Raphaels Church, Livingston, and a member of the West Orange Senior Citizens.
A native of Newark, she moved to West Orange many years ago.
Surviving are Victor, her husband of 68 years; a daughter, Agatha Garaffa, and two grandchildren.
