John Thomas
John Thomas, 92, of Toms River died Feb. 18 in the Burnt Tavern Rehabilitation Center, Brick.
He was a supervisor at General Electric in Paterson for many years and a member and past president of the International Union of Electrical Workers in Bloomfield.
After retiring, he worked for AT&T and Bechtel for several years.
Mr. Thomas was a member of the Knights of Columbus in West Orange.
Born in Orange, he moved to Toms River 10 years ago.
Surviving are sons, Richard and Bill; sisters, Mae Gleriun and Anne Kennum; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Liesel David
Mrs. Liesel David of West Orange died Feb. 17 in the Green Hill Nursing Home, West Orange.
Mrs. David was a clerical worker at Royal Globe Insurance in New York City before retiring.
She was a member of the Senior Center and YMHA in Washington Heights, New York City.
Born in Heidelberg, Germany, Mrs. David lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, and New York City before moving to West Orange in 1998.
Surviving are a son, Michael, and two grandchildren.
Arkady Zalesky
Arkady Zalesky, 86, of West Orange died Feb. 17 in Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston. He was a dental technician for many years before retiring.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge 1154 in South Orange.
Born in Vranje, Yugoslavia, he lived in Halifax, West Yorkshire County, England, for 12 years and South Orange for 40 years before moving to West Orange a year ago.
Surviving is his wife, Franciszka.
George Hulse
George A. Hulse, 79, of Roselle died May 25 at home.
Born in New York, Mr. Hulse moved to Roselle more than 20 years ago. He was a self-employed carpenter.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Rosetta; two daughters, Beverly Thornton and Nancee; three sons, George III, Marion and Jeffrey; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Anna Gushin

Anna Gushin, 102, of Linden died April 27 in the Delaire Nursing Home, Linden.
Born on Feb. 7, 1904 in Elizabeth, Mrs. Gushin lived in Linden for most of her life. She was a member of the Deborah, Hadassah and the Sisterhood of Anshe Chesed Congregation, all in Linden.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Stephen Gushin, and three grandchildren.
Ann Costa
Ann Costa, 44, of Linden, formerly of Rahway, died May 28 in the Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center, Edison.
Born in Rahway, Mrs. Costa lived there before moving to Linden five years ago. She owned “It’s Grooming Time” in Linden for 15 years.
Surviving are her husband, J. Mario; a stepdaughter, Naleena; her mother, Lillian Kump; a brother, Bob Kump, and two sisters, Betty Kump and Susan Reed.
Frank Balick
Frank Balick, 80, of Linden died May 29 in Trinitas Hospital, Elizabeth.
Born in Poland, Mr. Balick lived in Elizabeth from 1938 to 1948 when he moved to Linden. He was a chemical operator at Proctor and Gamble, Staten Island, for 32 years before retiring in 1989. Previously, Mr. Balick was a chemical operator for Exxon Co., Linden, for seven years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served as a medical technician.
Mr. Balick was a member of the Holy Name Society and Senior Citizens Club at St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Elizabeth, the American Legion Post 253 in Sportswood and the Linden Knights of Columbus 2859.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Nina; three sons, Frank, Joseph and Robert; a sister, Nellie Mnich; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Catherine Ryan
Catherine Ryan, 79, of Roselle died May 28 at home.
Born in Elizabeth, Mrs. Ryan lived in Roselle for the past 48 years. She was a secretary at Union County College for many years before retiring. Previously, Mrs. Ryan was a secretary at Standard Oil, Linden.
Surviving are two sons, Frank and Edward; a daughter, Peggy Pucci; two sisters, Helen and Mary Halleck, and eight grandchildren.
Nancy Matthews
Nancy Ann Matthews, 57, of Linden died May 30 in the Delaire Nursing and Convalescent Center, Linden.
Born in Barnwell, S.C., Mrs. Matthews lived in Brooklyn before moving to Linden. She worked in financing at Brooklyn Hospital in New York for 30 years before retiring in 1999. Mrs. Matthews was a member of the Hospitality Club at the Wadeside Baptist Church, Brooklyn.
Surviving are a daughter, Tammy Durham; three sisters, Marie Jones, Mary Ware and Shirley Mendoza, and three grandchildren.
Rolando Perez
Rolando M. Perez, 67, of Rahway died May 29 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway.
Mr. Perez was born in the Philippines. He was a machine operator for Dry Print Foil, Rahway, for 12 years before retiring in 1983.
Surviving are his wife, Leonida; two sons, Raphael and Roy; a sister, Teresita Belandres; three brothers, Romeo, Manuel and Romulo, and two grandchildren.
Frank Pfaff
Frank Pfaff, 90, of Linden died May 30 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway.
Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Pfaff moved to Linden in 1960. He was a chemical operator for GAF Chemical Corp., Linden, for 31 years before retiring in 1978. Mr. Pfaff served in the Army Air Force curing World War II as a sergeant on B-24 bombers. He was a member of the American Legion Post 102 in Linden.
Surviving are a son, Richard P.; a daughter, Francine A. Bird; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Agostinho Anjos
Agostinho Anjos, 38, of Rahway, formerly of Elizabeth, died May 30 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on Erie Street in Elizabeth.
Born in Porto, Portugal, Mr. Anjos came to the United States in the 1970s and lived in Elizabeth before moving to Rahway a year ago. He owned and operated the 512 Auto Body Shop, Elizabeth.
Surviving are a daughter, Vanessa; two sons, Niko and Steven; his mother, Maria Anjos; a sister, Maria; a brother, Gorge, and his companion, Maria Mendoza.
Horace Harris Jr.
Horace Harris Jr., 79, of Berkeley Heights, formerly of Elizabeth and Linden, died May 31 in Runnells Specialized Hospital of Union County, Berkeley Heights.
Born in Gilbert, S.C., Mr. Harris lived in Elizabeth and Linden for many years before moving to Berkeley Heights several years ago. He worked for General Motors Corp., Linden, for many years before retiring in 1982. After that, Mr. Harris was a procurement officer for the Union County Department of Public Safety until 1986. He was a member of the Fourth Ward Political Club in Linden and the Linden Public Housing Authority Board, to which he was first appointed in 1982. Mr. Harris served on the board until June 2004.
Surviving are a son, Gary; a daughter, Jacqueline Williams; a sister, Mary Sherard; a brother, Norman, and three grandchildren.
Doris Crump
Doris Marie Crump of Linden died June 1 in the home of her daughter, Marlane Movacs, in Bridgewater.
Born in Newark, Mrs. Crump lived in Irvington before moving to Linden 52 years ago. She was a salesperson in Nason’s department store in Linden for 25 years before retiring in 1995.
Also surviving are another daughter, Sherelyn Kenny, and two grandchildren.
Martha Toney
Martha Francis Toney, 59, of Rahway died June 29 at home.
Born in Aiken, S.C., Mrs. Toney lived in the Bronx before moving to Rahway 22 years ago.
Surviving are a son, Ruben; a daughter, Melissica; three sisters, Joyce Simpson, Sarah Kettrell and Maria Gachette; a brother, Crosby Broadwater, and two grandchildren.
Bertha Kapinos
Bertha Kapinos, 75, of Linden died June 3 in the Delaire Nursing Home, Linden.
Born in Elizabeth, Mrs. Kapinos lived in Linden for seven years.
Surviving is a sister, Cecilia Kustek.
Lillian Lewell
Lillian Lewell, 90, of West Orange died March 18 at home.
Born in Newark and a graduate of South Side High School, Mrs. Lewell lived in Maplewood and then Scranton, Pa., before moving to West Orange.
Prior to retiring, she, along with her late husband, Harold, owned and operated Ann Phillips Art Center in East Orange and then West Orange for 28 years.
Mrs. Lewell was a member of the Sisterhood of Temple Emanu-El of West Essex in Livingston; the Millburn Chapter of the Jewish Women International and the Temple B’nai Abraham Senior Citizens in Livingston. She also volunteered at the soup kitchen at St. Mark’s Church in West Orange.
She is survived by two daughters, Gail Goldblat of Livingston and Barbara Fishback of Olney, Md.; a brother, Seymour Eisenfeld of Delray Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
