Jean Abby Saslow
Jean Abby Saslow, 59, died Feb. 23 after a battle with cancer, as reported by her husband, Dr. Arnold R Saslow, of West Orange. She was a graduate of West Orange High School, and attended and graduated from L.I.M. in Manhattan. She was born and raised in West Orange, the daughter of the late Bennett Herman, who for decades was “Mr-Go-To” in the City of Orange. She is survived by her mother, Natalie Herman, who is 96.
She was the granddaughter of Abe Holzmann, the noted turn-of-the-20th century rag time composer, who at one time hired a very young George Gershwin to play submitted compositions.
After a former brief marriage, she spent the following 20-plus years living as a single woman in Manhattan where she worked as an advertising model, real estate agent, and, for the majority of this period, as an independent TV and info-mercial producer. She was a regular at Studio 54, and befriended Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, and other noted figures of the time.
She moved to South Orange to attend to her elderly parents and met her husband in 1998, by coming into his store, Ye Olde Curiositie Shoppe of South Orange, to sell a “treasure coin” from the Antocha given to her by a friend.
Once again living in West Orange, she became an award-winning artist in acrylics and collage, and exhibited at numerous shows in New York City and New Jersey. She was the treasurer of the West Essex Art Association and on the board of directors of the West Orange Arts Council.
She is survived by step-daughters, Julie Winkler of Cherry Hill, and Amanda Saslow of Germantown, and two step-grand-daughters, Maddie and Katie Winkler. She is also survived by her sister, Natalie Rosen, of Scotch Plains, and nieces Ariel Kirchner of Toms River, and Stacey Rosen of Austin, Texas.

Ellen Rita
Ellen Rita, 99, died Feb. 24 in her home in Verona.
Born in Carbondale, Pa., she lived in West Orange from 1953 to 1976 and Toms River from 1976 to 2000, moving to Verona in 2000.
Mrs. Rita was a hostess at the Hotel New Yorker in New York City and the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark.
Mrs. Rita was a member of the Community Hospital Auxiliary in Toms River. She was also a member of the Italian-American Society of both West Orange and Toms River. She was in the Elks Club Auxiliary in Toms River. She was a patron of Sympathy Hall in Newark.
Surviving are grandchildren Patricia Nigara, Debra Mauro, Daryl Zinn, Dawn Marie Zinn and Gene Zinn, and great-grandchildren Mark Nigara, Matthew Migara, Bethany Nigara and Michael Gilham.
Lincoln Ames
Lincoln Ames, 73, a lifelong Montclair resident, died of a stroke on Feb. 22 in Mountainside Hospital, Glen Ridge.
He was executive vice president of Dean Witter Reynolds Inc., and a member of the board of directors and executive committee, before retiring. Before that, he was a director of Blyth & Co. and also served as a director of the Montclair Savings Bank. At the time of his death, Mr. Ames was majority owner and chairman of the Hammer Manufacturing Co. in Linden.
He was a graduate of Yale University and the Harvard Business School and served as an air intelligence officer in the Navy.
Mr. Ames was also a former board member of Mountainside Hospital, the Montclair Art Museum, the United Way of North Essex and the Mental Health Resource Center. He was the current chairman of the board of the Green Hill Retirement Community in West Orange.
Surviving are his wife, Aubin; a daughter, Hyla Ames Bauer; sons, Mark and David; a sister, Hyla Ames Troxell; a brother, Theodore, and three grandchildren.
Delphine Hester Johnson
Delphine Hester Johnson, 82, of Beaufort, N.C., died on Feb. 22 at East Orange Memorial Hospital. She was an elementary and special education teacher until she retired in 1977.
Born in Morehead City, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Hester and Gertrude Reinhart Hester. She lived in West Orange and recently resided at the White House Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Orange.
Surviving are a daughter, Amy Johnson Ferdinand, a son-in-law, Stanley Ferdinand, and a grandson, Rolinlahla Ferdinand, of West Orange; and sisters-in-law Rev. Violet Bailey of Beaufort, N.C., and Nina Williams, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Mollie Newman
Mrs. Mollie Newman, 100, of West Orange died Feb. 22 at the Daughters of Israel Geriatric Center in West Orange.
She worked at the school office of Temple B’nai Jeshurun for 25 years.
A life member and former Woman of the Year of the Hadassah of South Orange, Mrs. Newman was a member of the Council for Jewish Women and the Womens Association of Temple B’nai Jeshurun.
Born in Brotmanville on July 30, 1905, she lived in Brooklyn, Newark and East Orange before moving to West Orange 15 years ago.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Herbert Newman; a daughter, Barbara Minoff; a brother, Louis Levinson; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Gary W. Anastasia
Gary W. Anastasia, 64, of Cranbury, died Feb. 21 in the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
Mr. Anastasia was an executive for the New Jersey House Finance and Mortgage Agency in Trenton. Before that, he worked for the Library of Congress.
He was a 1964 graduate of Seton Hall University in South Orange.
Born in Newark, he lived in West Orange before moving to Cranbury.
Surviving are brothers, Louis and Wayne; sisters, Joyce Urbanski, Judith Anastasia and June Gentilcore, and his companion, Kathleen Okenica.
Shannon K. Patterson
Shannon K. Patterson, 24, of Forked River died Feb. 21 in Community Medical Center, Toms River. She worked for Insulite Inc. in Toms River.
Born in Montclair, she lived in West Orange and Brick for 15 years before moving to Forked River.
Surviving are her parents, Richard S. and Patricia Patterson; a brother, Scott; sisters, Kayla and Kimberly, and her grandmother, Grace Mitchell.
Lawrence Kantor
Lawrence Kantor, 91, of West Orange died Feb. 20 at home.
Mr. Kantor was president of Lawrence Kantor Inc., a plumbing and heating supply company in Orange, for 51 years.
He received a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from St. Johns University in Annapolis, Md., in 1935.
Mr. Kantor was a lieutenant in the Army during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater, from 1941 until 1946.
He was a member of the Cedar Hill Country Club in Livingston and the Polo Club in Boca Raton.
Born in Newark, Mr. Kantor lived in East Orange for 45 years, West Orange for 30 years and between Boca Raton, Fla., and West Orange for the past 17 years.
Surviving are Charlotte, his wife of 63 years; sons, Lawrence Jr. and Jonathan; a brother, William; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Shirley Krueger
Mrs. Shirley Krueger, 88, of West Orange, died Feb. 20 in the Daughters of Israel, West Orange.
Mrs. Krueger was born in Newark and lived in West Orange.
Surviving are a son, Thomas; daughters, Jane Grossman and Nancy Berlinski; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Francis T. Nowak
Francis T. Nowak, 85, of West Orange died Feb. 19 in the Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville. He worked for Curtiss Wright & Co. in Wood-Ridge for 43 years before retiring as a quality control inspector.
Born in Brooklyn, he lived in Hasbrouck Heights before moving to Livingston 47 years ago.
Surviving are daughters, Cynthia Tillawi and Linda Masotti; a son, Theodore F.; a sister, Helen Rocco, and two grandchildren.
Samuel Pappa
Samuel Pappa, 82, of Bloomfield died Feb. 19 in the Clara Maass Continuing Care Center, Belleville.
He was a maintenance man at the Black Prince Distillery in Clifton for 10 years before retiring six years ago. Earlier, he was a route salesman for the Wagner Bakery in Newark for 20 years. Most recently, Mr. Pappa was a part-time courier at Midlantic Bank in West Orange.
Born in Newark, he moved to Bloomfield in 1980.
Surviving are a daughter, Joan Alverso; sons, Edward Munley and Thomas Pappa; brothers, Joseph Papa, Frank Papa and Thomas Papa; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Dominick J. Cali
Dominick J. Cali, 82, of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of New Jersey, died Feb. 19 at home.
He was a bus driver for the West Orange Board of Education before retiring in 1986.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he served on the U.S.S. Makin Island.
He was a life member and past post commander of the West Orange Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the Italian-American Club of Vero Beach.
Born in West Orange, he lived there for 43 years before moving to Vero Beach 15 years ago. He also maintained a residence in Toms River.
Surviving are Yolanda, his wife of 53 years; sons, Dominick, Michael and Frank; a daughter, Donna Forte; sisters, Jeanette Johnson and Rosa Martin; brothers, Frank and Leo, and five grandchildren.
Albert V. Eberhardt
Albert V. Eberhardt, 94, of West Orange died Feb. 19 at home. He was a machinist at the Bendix Corp. in Teterboro for 32 years before retiring 33 years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Helen; a daughter, Louise Renta; sons, Albert and Jerry; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Corinna M. Cora Cito
Mrs. Corinna M. Cora Cito, 81, of West Orange died Feb. 18 in the Inglemoor Care Center in Livingston. She was an actuarial clerk for Chubb Life Insurance for 15 years before retiring in 1983.
She was a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Senior Club and Happy Hour, and West Orange Senior Bingo.
Born in the Bronx, Mrs. Cito moved to West Orange 57 years ago.
Surviving are daughters, Ann Marie Lehr and Nancy Grolli; sons, Joseph Tarulli Jr., Michael A. Cito, Richard Cito and Paul Cito, and seven grandchildren.
