Josephine Valenza

Josephine Valenza, 88, of Scotch Plains, formerly of Union, died March 7 in Muhlenberg Regional medical Center, Plainfield.

Born in New York City, Miss Valenza lived in East Orange and Union before moving to Scotch Plains in 2003.

Surviving is a sister, Carmelina Hopkins.

Esther Tarler

Esther Tarler of Albany, N.Y., formerly of Cranford and Hillside, a retired reading specialist in Hillside, died March 14 at home.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Tarler lived in the Ironbound section of Newark, Hillside and Cranford before recently moving to Albany. She was an elementary teacher for the Hillside school system for 28 years before retiring as an elementary reading specialist. Mrs. Tarler received a bachelor’s degree from Kean University, Union, the formerly Newark State Teacher’s College, and received a master’s degree from Kean. Mrs. Tarler also was a life member of the Hadassah in Cranford/Roselle Park, and she served as president, received the Hadassah National Leadership Award in 2003 and was named “Woman of the Year” in 1997.

Surviving are two sons, Howard and Jay; a sister, Beverly Teich; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ozzie Robinson

Ozzie Robinson, 60, of Union died March 14 in St. Barnabas and Palliative Care Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

Born in Atlanta, Ga., Mrs. Robinson lived in Newark before moving to Union. She was a home health aide assistant for Patient Care, West Orange, many years ago.

Surviving are her husband of 40 years, Alexander; two daughters, Nicole and Susan; three sisters, Annette Roseberry, Emma Green and Judy Ingram, and two grandchildren.

Carrie Scott

Carrie Scott, 88, of the Vauxhall section of Union, died March 10 in Overlook Hospital, Summit.

Born in Fredericksburg, Va., Mrs. Scott lived in Vauxhall for many years. She was a nurse’s aide in Overlook Hospital for 16 years before retiring. Mrs. Scott was active with the First Baptist Church of Vauxhall and was a missionary and a member of the deaconess ministry, the J.G. Bryant Choir and the pastor’s aide. In 1998, Mrs. Scott became “mother” of the church.

Surviving are three daughters, Patricia Blanchard, Addie Harrison and Priscilla Scott; three sons, Kenneth Jr., James Sr. and John Sr.; two brothers, Frank and Gilbert Preston; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Carolyn Kujbus

Carolyn Kujbus, 65, a lifelong resident of Union, died March 15 in Union Hospital.

Mrs. Kujbus was a medical transcriber for the Union County Orthopedic Group in Linden for 20 years.

Surviving are her husband, Michael; a daughter, Christine Lamberson; a son, Michael; her mother, Mary Fera; a brother, Kenneth Fera, and a grandchild.

Irma Braunig

Irma Braunig, 72, of Union died March 14 in Union Hospital.

Born in Germany, Mrs. Braunig came to the United States in 1956 and lived in Newark before moving to Union in 1961. She was a lead technician for Union Hospital for 22 years before retiring.

Surviving are a daughter, Lore Kass; three brothers, Paul, Arnold and Eduard Geigle, and two grandchildren.

Patricia Sinisi

Patricia Rose Sinisi, 77, of Kenilworth died March 16 in St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Sinisi moved to Kenilworth 40 years ago. She was a line production worker at Schering Plough Corp., Kenilworth, for many years before retiring in 1991. She was a member of the Kenilworth Senior Citizens.

Surviving are a son, Joseph F. Jr.; a daughter, Patricia Ann Yasinski; a brother, Anthony Cuppari; a sister, Hearaldina Lopez, and a grandchild.

John Spinosa

John A. Spinosa, 69, of Union died March 16 at home.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Spinosa lived in Union for 43 years. He was a self-employed public accountant with an office on Stuyvesant Avenue, Union, for 36 years before retiring in 1999. Mr. Spinosa was a 1962 graduate of St. Francis University in Brooklyn. Surviving are his wife, Rosemarie, and a sister, Tina Conti.

Mitchell Gorlin

Mitchell Gorlin, 51, of Union died March 16 at home.

Born in Newark, Mr. Gorlin lived in Union and Long Branch before returning to Union six years ago. He was a self-employed business consultant in the Union area, specializing in wholesale foods. Mr. Gorlin was a member of the Harley Motorcycle Club in Long Branch.

Surviving are his parents, Rose and Joseph Gorlin, and a sister, Jaye Tarantino.

Agnes Ondish

Agnes M. Ondish, 84, of Union died March 17 in the Father Hudson House, Elizabeth.

Born in Swoyerville, Pa., Mrs. Ondish lived in Elizabeth before moving to Union 50 years ago. She was commander of the Disabled American Veterans ID Harris Chapter 40, Union, and a member of the St. James Senior Citizens, Springfield.

Surviving are her husband, George; a son, George; a daughter, Theresa Heaney; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Dr. Joseph Edwards

Dr. Joseph Edwards of Union, surgeon and humanitarian, died March 17 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center, Plainfield.

Born in Newark, Dr. Edwards lived in Union for 30 years. He maintained a general practice in South Plainfield. Dr. Edwards was a staff surgeon at St. Peter’s University Hospital and at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway. He spent his career working with the homeless in Newark and children of Third World countries. Dr. Edwards also joined the Medical Reserve Team after 9/11. He graduated from Rutgers University, Newark, and the New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Edwards served his internship and residency in neuro-surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital, Manhattan.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Rhona; two sons, Steven and Michael; two daughters, Lisa Scheiner and Jennifer Friedman; a brother, Frank, and four grandchildren.

Elmer Schwartz

Elmer Schwartz, 81, of Short Hills, was founder and president of Archie Schwartz Co. in Livingston, an industrial real estate brokerage firm, for more than 50 years.

He served in the Army from 1942 to 1946 as an athletics instructor.

Born in Jersey City, he lived in West Orange for 15 years before moving to Short Hills 30 years ago.

Surviving are Francine D., his wife of 20 years; daughters, Doree Kates and Debi Yellin; a sister, Doralee Herman, and several grandchildren.

Joseph A. De Lorenzo

Joseph A. De Lorenzo, 74, of West Orange, died March 4 at home. He owned Joe De Lorenzo Contracting Inc. in West Orange.

Born in West Orange, he lived in Orange before returning to West Orange 45 years ago.

Surviving are daughters, Camille Lorenzo, Cherylann Palazzolo and Carla Jo Scaglia; brothers, Hannibal, Anthony, William and Robert; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Barbara Mae Woods

Barbara Mae Woods, 71, a lifelong West Orange resident, died March 4 at home.

She was a tape librarian manager at Commercial Data Processing in Fairfield for 10 years. Before that, she was a bookkeeper at the Rheingold brewery in Newark for several years.

Ms. Woods was a volunteer dispatcher for the West Orange Rescue Squad.

Surviving are sons, Richard J. III, Robert S. and William F.; daughters, Tracey A. Kaufman and Kelly A. Blecker, and six grandchildren.

Janet Decter

Janet Decter, 86, of West Orange, died March 3 in Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston. She was a part-time receptionist at Creative Solutions in Maplewood.

She previously was an office assistant at the MetroWest Jewish Community Center in West Orange.

Before that, Mrs. Decter was a playground aide at the Washington School in Union and a part-time receptionist at the office of her late husband, Dr. D. Leonard Decter. She was a volunteer at Union Hospital for 25 years and at the MetroWest Jewish Community Center.

A native of Newark, Mrs. Decter lived in Union before moving to West Orange 15 years ago.

Surviving are daughters, Sharon Brendzel, Barbara Wiesbart and Ellynn Szoke; a brother, Dr. Seymour Lehrich; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Barbara L. Seery

Barbara L. Seery, 74, of Wayne, died Feb. 26 at home.

Born in East Orange, she lived in West Orange and West Paterson before moving to Wayne 46 years ago.

Surviving are daughters, Suzann Jantzen and Janine Sizemore, and four grandchildren

Agnes Ritchie

Agnes Ritchie, 84, of Vero Beach, Fla., a former West Orange resident, died Feb. 27 at home. She was a draftsman with Thomas A. Edison in West Orange for 40 years before retiring in 1984.

She was a member of The Indian River Humane Society in Vero Beach.

Born in Orange, she lived in West Orange before moving to Florida in 1984.

Helen C. Fagan

Helen C. Fagan, 82, of Succasunna formerly of West Orange, died March 3 in the Merry Heart Health Care Center, Succasunna. She was a teacher’s aide at Our Lady of Lourdes School in West Orange many years ago.

She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.

Born in Bayonne, Ms. Fagan lived in West Orange before moving to Succasunna.

Surviving are sons, Joseph, Thomas and Paul; a daughter, Patricia Turner; a brother, Chester Buczynski; 11 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Edward P. Zilliox

Edward P. Zilliox, 60, of Washington died Feb. 26 at home. He was a senior tech associate at Lucent Technologies in Whippany, where he worked for 30 years before retiring in 1993. He was a volunteer deputy sheriff in Essex County and served as a lieutenant for 12 years.

He was also a team leader for the American Red Cross of Warren and Morris counties.

Born in Newark, Mr. Zilliox lived in West Orange, East Hanover and Lake Hopatcong before moving to Washington three years ago.

Surviving are sons, Andrew M. and Daniel P.; a stepdaughter, Valerie Steiger; stepsons, Joe, Mark and Steven LaPenta; a brother, William J., and six grandchildren.
