Stella Messineo
Stella M. Messineo, 84, of Union died Feb. 17 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.
Born in Elizabeth, Miss Messineo lived in Union for most of her life.She was a secretary at First Fidelity Bank Corp., Newark, for many years before retiring 20 years ago. Miss Messineo was a Eucharistic minister in Union Hospital. She also was an executive member of the board of the Union Hospital Guild. Miss Messineo also was a volunteer with the Garden State Cultural Center Fund in Woodbridge and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons Chapter 4026 in Union. Miss Messineo was a member of the Holy Spirit 60-Plus Club.
Surviving are a sister, Concettina Petio, and two brothers, Leonard and Ralph.
Lillian Purcell
Lillian H. Purcell, 93, of Kenilworth died Feb. 18 in the Cornell hall Nursing and Convalescent Center, Union.
Born in Avoca, Pa., Mrs. Purcell lived in Newark before moving Kenilworth 52 years ago. Surviving are a son, Bertrand M.; a sister, Margaret O’Malley, and a grandchild.
John Gelmi
John A. Gelmi, 84, of Union died Feb. 27 in Union Hospital.
Born in Boston, Mr. Gelmi lived in Newark and Irvington before moving to Union 39 years ago. He was a truck driver for N.J. Forwarding Co., Newark, for 25 years before retiring 29 years ago. Mr. Gelmi served in the Army during World War II.
Surviving are a son, John G.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Florence DeMicco
Florence DeMicco, 87, of Roselle Park died March 1 in Union Hospital.
Born in Hoboken, Mrs. DeMicco lived in Elizabeth before moving to Roselle Park 45 years ago. She was a seamstress for Janet Lynn Ladies Clothes, Elizabeth, for 20 years before retiring 27 years ago. Mrs. DeMicco was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union in New York City. She also was a member of the New Jersey Association for the Deaf and the Trenton Deaf Society.
Surviving are her husband, Angelo P.; a son, Patrick; a daughter, Lucille; a sister, Emma Renick; a brother, Frank DeLaura, and two grandchildren.
Albert Perlman
Albert H. Perlman of Union, who maintained a second residence in Boca Raton, Fla., for the last several years, died March 1 in his winter residence in Florida.
Born in Newark, Mr. Perlman lived in Union for more than 50 years. He was a salesman for M. Bernstein & Son, East Orange, before retiring several years ago. Mr. Perlman previously owned and operated A & M Tobacco, Union, for five years, where he also was a salesman, and he was a manager for Miller Paper Supply, Newark.
Mr. Perlman was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a master sergeant and a medic in the European and Pacific theaters. Mr. Perlman was a first vice president of Ehrhart Gardens Senior Housing, Schaefer Gardens Senior Housing and Nora Gardens Senior Housing, all in Union. Also in Union, he was a mayor’s aide from 1996 to 2003, a constable and a Democratic district committeeman. He belonged to the B’nai B’rith of Union and the Knights of Pythias in Hillside.
Surviving are a daughter, Karen Perlman, and a sister, Beatrice Gimelstob.
Ruth Gorrin
Ruth Gorrin, 87, of Union died March 1 in Union Hospital.
Born in Orange, Mrs. Gorrin lived in Irvington before moving to Union 36 years ago. She was a secretary for the Internal Revenue Service, Newark, before retiring. Mrs. Gorrin was a graduate of Drake Business School, Newark. She was a member of the Ahavath Achim B’nai Israel Sisterhood, Irvington.
Surviving are her husband, Harry, and a son, Gene.
Richard Egner
Richard J. Egner, 84, of Union died March 1 in Union Hospital.
Born in Newark, Mr. Egner lived in Irvington before moving to Union 56 years ago. He was a custodian at Montclair State College before retiring in 1983. Previously, Mr. Egner was a railroad conductor for Koppers Coke, Kearny, for many years. He was an Army veteran and served during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Rita; a son, Louis; three sisters, Doris Urbanowick, Genevieve Demers and Helen Smith, and a grandchild.
C. Wesley Hunt Sr.
C. Wesley Hunt Sr., 92, of Union died March 1 in Runnells Specialized Hospital of Union County, Berkeley Heights.
Born in Newark, Mr. Hunt lived in Irvington before moving to Union 50 years ago. He was a wholesale carpet salesman with New Jersey Carpet Corp., Newark, for 40 years before retiring in 1975.
Surviving are a daughter, Louan Hunt-Foster; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Frank Arace
Frank P. Arace, 74, of Union died March 2 in Overlook Hospital, Summit.
Born in Newark, Mr. Arace lived in Union for 43 years. He was a produce manager with A & P, Union, where he worked for 33 years before retiring many years ago. Mr. Arace served in the Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Elks Lodge 1583 in Union.
Surviving are his wife, Antoinette; a son, John, and a daughter, Patricia.
Ann Sodano
Ann T. Sodano, 82, of Union died March 1 at home.
Born in Newark, Mrs. Sodano lived in Union for 43 years. She was an office assistant with United Vintners Inc., Jersey City, from 1963 to 1983, when she retired.
Surviving are three brothers, Anthony, Frank and William.
Julia Danna
Julia Danna, 94, of Lincoln Park, formerly of Union, died March 2 in the Lincoln Park Renaissance Nursing home.
Born in New York City, Mrs. Danna lived in Orange, Newark and Union for 48 years before moving to Lincoln Park five years ago.
Surviving is a sister, Esther Selitto.
Joseph Korecky
Joseph W. Korecky, 92, of Union died Feb. 28 in the Cornell Hall Nursing and Convalescent Center, Union.
Born in Barnesboro, Pa., Mr. Korecky lived in Elizabeth before moving to Union in 1999. He was a cable splicer for Bridon American Co., Linden, for 15 years before retiring.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Stella; two sons, Joseph Jr. and Warren; two daughters, Dyane Baldwin and Kimberly Cabrera; a brother, Blair; three sisters, Bertha Scutieri, Marion Schall and Dorothy Moore; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Walter Pilot
Walter John “Wally” Pilot, 86, of Kenilworth died March 3 in Overlook Hospital, Summit.
Born in Marsteller, Pa., Mr. Pilot lived in Newark and South Orange before moving to Kenilworth 56 years ago. He was a machinist for Gould Pump Inc., Fairfield, for 20 years before retiring 22 years ago. Earlier, Mr. Pilot was a machinist for Le Courtney Pump Co., Newark, for 25 years. He was an Army ranger in World War II. Mr. Pilot served with Company B of the 160th Engineer Combat Battalion and was among the first to land on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He also fought in campaigns in Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe.
Mr. Pilot was a member of the Father McVeigh Knights of Columbus Council 4186, Kenilworth. He also was a member of the International Association of machinists Lodge 340, a machinists’ organization, at Gould Pump Inc. and a coach for the Mastapeter Funeral Home men’s softball league in Kenilworth.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Emily; a son, Gregory; a daughter, Valerie Lombardo; two brothers, Michael and Edward; three sisters, Stella, Marion and Jean, and two grandchildren.
Louise Skuropacki
Louise Skuropacki, 82, a lifelong resident of Union, died March 3 in Hunterdon Medical Center, Flemington.
Surviving are two sons, Steven and Michael; two brothers, John and Gustav Schmitt; a sister, Anna Whitehead, and six grandchildren.
Kenneth Egbert
Kenneth George Egbert, 79. of Union, a former district governor of the Union Lions Club, died March 5 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway.
Born in Newark, Mr. Egbert lived in Rahway before moving to Union in 1963. He was a mortgage banker. Mr. Egbert was a vice president of United Counties Bank in Linden for many years before retiring in 1985. After that, he was a salesperson for Weichert Realty in Union. Mr. Egbert was a graduate of the American Institute of Banking and took courses at Ohio State University and Rutgers University, Newark. During World War II, he graduated from the Naval School of Music in Washington, D.C., and served as a musician on the USS Essex in the Pacific.
Mr. Egbert was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal, the asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was a member of the Lions Club of Union. Mr. Egbert served in every office on the local level, was a former district governor of District 16E and a former council chairman of the state of New Jersey Lions. He also was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow by the Lions organization. Mr. Egbert was a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 151 and a 57-year member of the F&AM Loyalty Lodge 33, Union. He also was a former elder, trustee and deacon of the Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church, Union.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Millicent; three daughters, Kim Zotti, Kathy Banks and Karol Fox; a son, Kevin, and nine grandchildren.
Agnes Cuscela
Agnes Cuscela, 89, of Hillside died March 6 in the Genesis ElderCare Center, Westfield.
Born in Newark, Mrs. Cuscela lived in Irvington before moving to Hillside 37 years ago. She was an office worker at Tessler and Weiss Jewelers, Union, for 20 years before retiring 24 years ago. Mrs. Cuscela was a member of the Italian-American Club of Hillside and the Rosary Society at Christ the King Church, Hillside.
Surviving are her husband, Daniel; two sons, William and Dennis Liento; three daughters, Frances Yorey, Nancy Dente and Elaine Patricco; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Janet Accardi
Janet Accardi of Union died March 6 in the Clark Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Newark, Mrs. Accardi moved to Union 30 years ago. She was a factory worker at Durkee’s in Maplewood for 10 years before retiring. Earlier, Mrs. Accardi was a button-hole operator.
Surviving are a daughter, Rosanne Caskey; a sister, Beatrice Lovello; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Marie French
Marie A. French, 63, of Union died March 6 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway.
Born in Elizabeth, Mrs. French lived in Union for 10 years. She was a telephone operator for Verizon, Union, for more than 25 years before retiring four years ago. Mrs. French was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Association of Bell Telephone Retirees and the Communication Workers of America.
Surviving are her husband of 25 years, Robert L.; two daughters, Michele Lamb and Lisa Harvey, and four grandchildren.
Jack Fein
Jack Fein, 90, of Kenilworth, an honored disabled veterans volunteer, died March 6 in the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Healthcare Center at Lyons.
Born in Newark, Mr. Fein lived in East Orange and Nutley before moving to Kenilworth in 1953. He was a line worker with United Steel Co., Piscataway, for 12 years before retiring in 1983. Previously, Mr. Fein was a line worker for 10 years with Monsanto Plastics, Kenilworth, and a salesman with Abelson’s Jewelers, now Zale’s, Newark, for 15 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, the Jewish War Veterans, the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the American Legion.
Mr. Fein volunteered more than 14,000 hours in 24 years with hospitalized veterans and was recently honored by the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care Center at Lyons. He also was honored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Michael A. Kelly Post 2433 in Union, where he served as chaplain for more than 20 years. In 2000, Mr. Fein was awarded the Outstanding Veteran-Patient Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution. He and his wife, Selma, received the Chapel of the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award from the AMVET Department of New Jersey.
Also surviving are a son, Michael, and two grandchildren.
