Anna Saladino
Anna Rose Saladino, 92, of Rahway, a registered nurse, died Feb. 19 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway.
Born in Hammonton, Mrs. Saladino lived in Rahway since 1945. She was a registered nurse at Rahway Hospital, now Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway, for many years before retiring in 1978. Mrs. Saladino was a graduate of the Cooper Hospital Nursing School in Camden.
She was a first lieutenant in the Army during the World War II, serving as a nurse in the European Theater’s 99th General Hospital in Northern France and the Rhineland. Mrs. Saladino received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and participated in the D-Day invasion. She was a member of the National Organization of World War II Nurses and a volunteer with the Red Cross. Mrs. Saladino was active at St. Mary’s Church, Rahway, as a Eucharistic minister and a member of the Rosary Altar Society and the Young at Heart Club.
Surviving are three daughters, Anne Padula, Janet Freet and Carolyn.
Edward Tomasso
Edward F. Tomasso, 70, of Roselle died Feb. 19 in Union Hospital.
Born in New York City, Mr. Tomasso moved to Roselle 43 years ago. He was an office worker at Rhodia, Cranbury, for nine years before retiring six years ago. Prior to that, Mr. Tomasso worked for GAF in Linden for 35 years. He served in the Army during peacetime.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Claire; a daughter, Tracy Orlando; a son, Edward; a brother, Jerry, and six grandchildren.
Reba Hicks
Reba Hicks, 88, of Roselle died Feb. 16 in the Clark Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Raleigh, N.C., Mrs. Hicks moved to Roselle many years ago. She was a home economics teacher at the Summit Junior High School many years ago.
Surviving is a brother, John H. Reeves.
R. Wilson de Myer Sr.
Robert Wilson de Myer Sr., 68, of Linden, formerly of Cranford, died Feb. 16 in Union Hospital.
Born in Bloomfield, Mr. de Myer lived in Cranford and Naples, Fla., and moved to Linden last year. He worked for M & R Marking Systems in Cranford and later, Piscataway, before retiring. Previously, Mr. de Myer owned and operated a messenger service in Cranford and a luggage repair business in Westfield and co-owned the Leather Shop in Millburn. He served in the Navy from 1955 to 1958 aboard the USS Rupertus. Mr. de Myer was a member of the Tin Can Sailors.
Surviving are two sons, Robert Jr. and Steven; a daughter, Kathleen Ronk, and two sisters, Barbara Sedorkis and Delores Dempsey.
Eleanor Dowling
Eleanor L. Dowling, 79, of Roselle died Feb. 22 in the Father Hudson House in Elizabeth.
Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Dowling moved to Roselle 55 years ago. She was a member of the Union County Irish-American Association and the Roselle Senior Citizens Thursday Group. Mrs. Dowling was a past president and chaplain of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 743 Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving are two sons, William and Jack; a daughter, Lorraine Krug; three sisters, Mary Martin, Catherine McGuire and Rita Jones, and four grandchildren.
Julius Vekassy
Julius Vekassy, 93, of Linden died Feb. 23 in the Father Hudson House, Elizabeth.
Born in Astoria, Queens, Mr. Vekassy moved to Linden 60 years ago. He was a a construction engineer at Exxon Research and Engineering, Florham Park, for 40 years before retiring in 1978. Mr. Vekassy was a member of the Exxon Annuitants Club. He was a 1934 graduate of New York University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in architecture. Mr. Vekassy was a member of the Linden Retired Men’s Club and an emeritus member of the American Institute of Architects.
Surviving are his wife or 66 years, Eva; a daughter, Marilyn Perfilio; a son, Robert Vinson; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Christina Mocharski
Christina M. Mocharski, 48, of Linden died Feb. 22 in Trinitas Hospital, Elizabeth.
Born in Perth Amboy, Mrs. Mocharski lived in Linden for 20 years. She was a dietitian at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Old Bridge from 1980 to 1986.
Surviving are her husband of 13 years, William F., and two sisters, Barbara Bayles and Theresa Resetar.
Joan Everett
Joan M. Everett, 81, of Roselle died Feb. 22 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Everett lived in Hillside before moving to Roselle many years ago. She also maintained a home in Brick. Mrs. Everett was a claims examiner with the New Jersey Division of Labor for 20 years before retiring. She was a member of the Rosary Society at St. Joseph the Carpenter Church and the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, both in Roselle.
Surviving are two daughters, Denise Traina and Karen Everett-Snodgrass, a son, David J.; three sisters, Diane Kennedy, Maryann Boston and Sharon MacMillan; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Rose Papa
Rose Papa, 72, of Rahway, formerly of Linden, died Feb. 24 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway.
Born in Newark, Mrs. Papa lived in Linden before moving to Rahway 13 years ago.
Surviving are three daughters, Valerie Gantner, Rosemarie VanHart and Michele Chittenden; a brother, Frank Avallone; three sisters, Marie Romano, Angela Puma and Helen Fabrizio, and four grandchildren.
Antonia Adelsdorf
Antonia Adelsdorf, 89, of Point Pleasant, formerly of Roselle, died Feb. 24 at home.
Born in New York, Mrs. Adelsdorf lived in Roselle for 63 years before moving to Point Pleasant two years ago.
Surviving are a daughter, Evelyn Turago; a grandchild and three great-grandchildren.
Marie Tomassi
Marie Tomassi, 81, a lifelong resident of Rahway, died Feb. 23 in JFK Medical Center, Edison.
Mrs. Tomassi was a bookkeeper for the Rahway Housing Authority for 21 years before retiring in 1986. Earlier, she was a bookkeeper for the city of Rahway for 10 years. Mrs. Tomassi was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 5 and the Elks Lodge 1975. both in Rahway.
Surviving are her husband, Louis F.; two daughters, Eleanor and Noreen; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mary Rinaldi
Mary Rinaldi, 85, of Rahway died Feb. 24 in the Rahway Geriatric Center. Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Rinaldi moved to Rahway in 1984.
Charles Calavano
Charles Calavano, 78, of Linden, formerly of Elizabeth, died Feb. 24 in the Delaire Nursing and Convalscent Center, Linden.
Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Calavano moved to Linden two years ago. He was a security guard at Phelps Dudge Co., Elizabeth, for 29 years before retiring 16 years ago. Mr. Calavano was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Elizabeth.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph and James; three daughters, Jean Lee Naturlie, Annamarie Pali and Florence; 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
J.A. Decker-Potts
Josephine A. Decker-Potts, 82, of Linden, formerly of Elizabeth, died Feb. 24 in Trinitas Hospital, Elizabeth.
Born in Elizabeth, Mrs. Decker-Potts lived there for many years before moving to Linden last year. She was a press operator for Thomas and Betts, Elizabeth, for 20 years before retiring in `1981. Surviving are a son, Thomas; a daughter, Nancy Mierzejewski; a sister, Rose Frank; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Betty Roediger
Betty Roediger, a lifelong resident of Rahway, died Feb. 24 at home.
Mrs. Roediger was a payroll clerk at Rahway City Hall for 30 years before retiring in 1991. She was a volunteer at the Union County Arts Center, Rahway.
Surviving are a son, Paul; two daughters, Janet Rice and Susan; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Oscar Thau
Oscar Thau, 83, of Elizabeth died Feb. 26 at home.
Born in New York City, Mr. Thau moved to Elizabeth many years ago. He was a business agent and union representative for the Bakers Union Local 167 of Long Island City before retiring 24 years ago. Mr. Thau was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Azure Massada Masonic Lodge of Cranford. He also was a two-time president and secretary of the Pioneer Masonic Lodge of New york City.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Ida; a daughter, Risa Hynes, and two grandchildren.
Frank Kut
Frank Kut, 87, of Elizabeth, owner of an Elizabeth company, died Feb. 26 at home.
Born in Poland, Mr. Kut came to Elizabeth in 1964. He was a general contractor and owned Frank Kut Construction, Elizabeth, for 27 years before retiring in 1991.
Surviving are a son, Anthony; two daughters, Alica Bimson and Teresa Kowalczyk; a brother, Stanley; two sisters in Poland, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Yolande Moise
Yolande Moise, 73, of Roselle died Feb. 24 in the Cranford Hall Nursing Home.
Born in Haiti, Mrs. Moise lived in Roselle for five years.
Surviving are two daughters, Chantal and Myriam; two sons, Reginald and Ricardo; five brothers, three sisters and six grandchildren.
William Tierney
William F. Tierney, 77, of Roselle died Feb. 28 in the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care Center in East Orange.
Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Tierney lived in Florida before moving to Roselle nine years ago. He was a roofer at Marconi Roofing, Linden. Mr. Tierney served in the Navy in China during peacetime and was a member of both the American Legion Post 229 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Roselle.
Surviving are three daughters, Alice Smith, Kathleen Schardien and Nancy; three sons, Michael Goodhart, John Goodhart, and Daniel Tierney; five sisters, Alice Dickert, Ann Faxon, Margaret Africano, Carol and Maureen Tierney; a brother, Joseph; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
William Ryan Sr.
William T. Ryan Sr., 85, of Westfield, formerly of Rahway and Cranford, died Feb. 26 in Overlook Hospital, Summit.
Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Ryan lived in Rahway for 55 years and Cranford for two years, before moving to Westfield. He was a laboratory technician for Exxon Corp., Linden, for 39 years before retiring in 1981. Mr. Ryan served in the Navy during World War II.
Surviving are four daughters, Naureen Bateman, Ellen Shranek, Marylou schultz and Betty Jane Steitz; five sons, William T. Jr., Joseph, James, Michael and Patrick; a brother, Edward; 23 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
